The scent of grilled meatgreets you as you walk pastthe place and you are left

with no choice but to headto Ibrahim Basheers City Snackstucked in one corner of Amir Ma-hal. The specialty of the house is

chicken shawarma marinated,flame-grilled meat, tucked in pitabread with an enticing salad forcompany.

The charming fellow at thecounter, Mohammed Saheer, aveteran with nine years of experi-ence in Arabian cooking in Du-bai, seemed enthusiastic about achat and informed us that hisshawarma has started giving

competition to Tripli-canes more famousseekh kebabs. Westarted three monthsago and are experienc-ing good footfall. Peo-ple are catching up toits unique taste, says

Saheer, who worked asa translator in a Dubaicourt in the morningbefore heading off to

his brothers snack corner on theopposite end of the court house.I learned every kind of Arabianpreparation at that small shop inDubai. When it was time to headhome due to some family issues, Ifound it easy to slip into thisrole.

Shawarma is the Middle Eastsanswer to fast food and the wordshawarma is actually a Turkish

word for turning and that is ex-actly how it is prepared. Pilesupon piles of raw meat aremounted on a massive spear until

it resembles a giant cone. At thevery top, a few heavy chunks ofanimal fat, lime, tomatoes andgarlic are attached and the meatis set to spin on a grilling device. It roasts all day as the fat and veg-

etables trickle down in a conuous drip, which keeps it mand tender.

Basheer has imported his ing machine from Banga

where the Arabian delicacyhuge hit, and procures meat fa dealer in Triplicane.

He charges Rs. 35 for his mdelicacy and has plans to induce more mouth-watering fbut only time will tell whetheLebanese shawarma holdsfooting against the more eakebabs in the busy streets of Tlicane.

to 10 p.m. (Open all days)

    Leather Hub is barely two

weeks old. The goods on theshelves, however, look care-fully handpicked than ran-

domly assembled. This leatheraccessories store in ThirumalaComplex, diagonally oppositeAdarsh Vidyalaya on Royapettah

High Road, is a good place to visitif youre looking for leather bags, belts, wallets, purses, shoes andother accessories.

The ladies handbag section, especially, throws up some inter-esting pieces. There is everythingfrom tiny coin purses to little

hand-bags, messenger bagsand giant totes inmottled green, blue, red and the classic tan, brown and black. We loved thesuede leather handbags in coffeebean brown and grey-blue. Bagsare priced between Rs. 300 andRs. 2,000.

Leather gloves in tan and blackcost between Rs. 150 and Rs. 375.

Leather jackets come betweenRs. 1,200 and Rs. 2,100, whilebelts are available in the range of

Rs. 150 to Rs. 375.Besides, there are the tiny leath-

er nick-knacks, too, like keychains, cellphone pouches and thelike.

The good thing is, while theproducts here cost a third of what

you might shell out for more well-known brands nestled in malls, everything is well-finished andneat, leaning more towards classicthan funky and careless.

The footwear section, at present,is limited to mens shoes and is inthe range of Rs. 400 to Rs. 999. As

Nasar of Leather Hub tells us, aseparate womens section is underconsideration. Well keep youposted.

    ERGO Wednesday, March 18, 2009BACKPACKERS04

It was the spring 2006 and myoffice had nominated me foran official trip to Hong Kongto attend the technology fore-

cast event of Philips called TheSimplicity Event.I could not believe my luck. It

was only my second trip abroadand I was going to the land ofJackie Chan. Let us not make anybones about it. We guys love

world movies, take pride in dis-cussing parallel cinema fromthe Kurosawas to the Godards tothe Kieslowskis. But in our heartof hearts, we enjoy most somegood old gut-kicking Hong Kongaction flicks.

I was there at Hong Kong forexactly three-and-half days, andso naturally kept my eyes dilatedto grasp as many sights as I pos-sibly could. But this story startsright on the last day of my stay.

It was the beautiful morning of

March 15 and I had alreadypacked my bags at the ExcelsiorHotel in Causeway Bay, located inthe central commercial district ofHong Kong. I was leaving by the 2p.m. flight to Singapore, and thatstill gave me half a day to see thesights. I had skipped the cocktails

the previous night and had gen-erally skipped my sleep too. Itwas all planned for. I would stayawake (courtesy some very strongcoffee) through the day and sleepduring my flight.

I had a cousin living in HongKong, who I had met only theprevious night to hand over apackage of essentials that hisparents had so lovingly asked meto courier. He had asked me totake the then recently inaugurat-ed Skyrail from Tung Chung, aHong Kong suburb, to the famousNnog Ping village. It is claimed tobe the largest cableway structureever constructed. The NgongPing village is also just a stonesthrow away the famous Po LinMonastery that houses the fa-

mous Tian Tan Buddha Statue(referred to by westerners as theBig Buddha). There is a famouspilgrimage trail adjacent to thestatue called the Wisdom Path.

The perfect planIt sounded like something that

was must-see. So I drew the per-fect plan that math would allowme to; take the undergroundtrain to my cousins house inTung Chung by 7 a.m.; reach hishouse by 7:45 a.m.; have the tra-ditional South Indian brunchthere (but why god? Why??) andexchange pleasantries till 8.30a.m.; take the skyrail (25-minute-

journey one-way) and reach theMonastery by 9 a.m.; return to mycousins place by 11 a.m.; andhead for that fantabulous HongKong International Airport onChek Lap Kok island well inadvance.

It went according to plan for afew minutes.

I reached my cousins placeand waited for the South Indian

brunch to happen. They had then started unpacking that bleft with them the previous nand were using the same indients to make the meal. To tthat I carried that for such a distance, only for them to and bring it back in my stom

Anyway Im the editor oftabloid and let me not makegross.

By the time I finished payaasam, it was already a.m. and little cartoon birdsbells were tweeting aroundhead. But a sudden surge of mness, which I attribute to the ar in the payaasam, urged mtake the Skyrail trip. It wasgoing to hurt. The math was and it only meant less time ing at all those stores at

Airport. So I rushed to the Tung Ch

Cable Car terminal, which luwas just a five minute mad-from my cousins house. I fomyself into the cable car wi20 minutes. And I kept refer

Some journeysare rememberedbest not for whatyou see but what

you do. Iexperienced sixhours of madnessand a fewseconds of blisson a beautifulspring day inHong Kongin 2006.

to the pamphlet they handedover. Twenty-five minute ride, itsaid. Nice. The math was holdingup well. But only naturedisagreed.

25 becomes 40It was an abnormally windy

day, I would find out much later. The 25-minute ride to the Monas-try took 40 minutes and I wasabout to throw up the entireSouth Indian brunch I had from1,000 feet above. I am normallyrestless but I remember goinghyper in mind. So this is it. I amgoing to miss my flight. SureshNambath (my boss back thenwho strictly asked me to get backwithout extending the stay) is go-ing to fire me. But hell, where amI going to find the money to flyback? Will my cousin help, I keptasking myself.

And as I was screaming in myhead, the cable car passedthrough such wonderful sights asthe spectacular view of the Air-port Island, and through the Cau-

seway Bay, and across the SouthChina Sea. Some say that at onepoint, you an also see the MacauIsland. But I did not. All I was see-ing was my own writing on the

    wall.It was 10.40 a.m. by the time I

    reached the Ngong Ping village.

And some village it was. I wasthinking it would be more like theones from the Chinese Kung Fuflicks. It was not. It was incrediblymodern and was a thriving mer-chandise zone. I needed to take abreather. And as I was panting, even though I was just standingheavily right through the past 40minutes, I saw from afar, the sidesof the Big Buddha. A pretty flabbyfellow but in total zen-like posi-

tion. My exact opposite at thatpoint of time, except of course theflab.

I walked into a nearby storeselling some gifts, including a fewChinese religious music CDs and

wind chimes. I got myself a CDand wondered for a second why I

liked Chinese music. Right then,my mind screamed: IDIOT. Iran back to the cable car to takethe ride back.

Looking suspiciousRight then, the security guards

found me suspicious. They want-ed to do a proper check at thegates. And as I started crying in-side, I opened up the gift bag toshow them the CD and the wind

chime. The Chinese guard lookedat me and laughed very slowly.Nice, he said. I did not reply inkind.

I dashed to the waiting cablecar and wanted it to start rolling.Cant go alone, the guard said.Wait for more people.

And then, at that point, I lookedat the Big Buddha and offered asmall prayer. And in no longerthan 5 minutes, a Japanese cou-ple walked in. And the cable car

was ready to go. It was now wellpast 11 a.m. I removed my wrist

watch and put it into my pantpockets. I was scared of givingmyself a heart attack just lookingat it.

As the cable car started its trav-el back to Tung Chung, I reflectedupon the past two hours of abso-lute madness. I was sweating pro-fusely. And from afar, I could seethe Big Buddha, all serene, all zen

The Japanese couple were coo-chi-cuddling, probably hopingthat the cable ride would last for-

ever. I was thinking there cabe two more diverse opinionssingle place. I was hoping some sci-fi special effect whappen, converting the cableride into hyper speed.

The Japenese guy (I forgename but hell they all so

alike) looked at my facthought, finally, here is a soulunderstands what I am gthrough. He whispered soming into his girlfriends ears she giggled. And then he ame: Do you want me to take photograph? For no appareason, I blurted out: Thod

At that exact moment, I exenced Anandamide. It was sbliss. And I was floating. Evgravity and my weight didagree.

I stepped out of the cable with just about two hours tfor my flight.

So did I make it on time?Damn. We have run ou

space this week. (To be continued)

What is Anandamide?Anandamide is an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmit-

Overwhelmed after receiving four awards, shesaid: Who doesnt like attention, recognition andawards? Ive got four awards in a month begin-ning with the environment award I got from ErinBrockovich, then two youth icon awards from Ro-tary International and Stardust. And now on Tues-

day I was honoured by FICCI which Yash Chopragave to me.

My mother gets exasperated each time I bringhome another trophy. Saif wants to know whereIm going to keep all of them. Ive set aside awhole enclave for trophies and awards. I lovelooking at them. One day my children are going tolook at them and be proud of me.

Now, after a long time, Kareena will be in Mum-bai for a month. Ive a month-long schedule ofRensil (DSilvas) film coming up in Mumbai.

Saif and Kareena returned home to Mumbaithis week from Delhi without completing theshooting for DSilvas film.

We never expected such crowds. They wereeverywhere. And it was impossible to shoot, shesays, sounding not the least put off. Those peo-ple who love me out there keep me going. I lovemy fans and awards.

And now Delhi will have to be fudged in theMumbai schedule of DSilvas film. The extent of the surging crowds in Delhi in the

key shooting spots like Jama Masjid and Janpathfor DSilvas untitled film was so huge and un-manageable that the unit has returned withoutshooting the required sequences.

Back in Mumbai after a week of futile shooting,Kareena says: Everywhere we went there werethese huge numbers of people who had come tosee Saif and me. They were very sweet, very well-behaved. But unfortunately the number of peoplein key places like Jama Masjid and Janpath wasalways too high to shoot properly.

As a result, there was almost no shooting. We shot some scenes. But it was impossible to

shoot with wide-angle lenses because the crowdswere everywhere. Well now have to recreatesome of the Delhi sequences in Mumbai.

Kareena is certainly not unhappy about the at-tention she got in Delhi. The people in Delhiwere so warm. It just made me realise how muchof a responsibility I have towards my audience. Atthis stage of my career Id rather take anotherholiday than do a bad film.
