Universal Language Aurora JaneWhat I like about Aurora Jane are herlyrics. She is all about improving theworld, whether Australia or India, andthe album was recorded in fact recordein both countries. The first song on thetrack, the optimistic Rise opens with acry against Australia and the earlyplundering which led to the aboriginalgenocideThe song Seven Sisters was written inIndia, during the Roots Festival, whenshe toured the north eastern states.Sound-wise, she tries to infuse catchy

riffs and rapid conga playing whichmake them upbeat songs. Some JimiHendrix influenced guitaring can befound in tracks like Way it is, which haa retro-disco flavour to it.But not without a message.

    Breathing UnderWater AnoushkaShankar, Karsh

KaleIn Burn, velvet-voicedNoah Lembersky dominates, withAnoushka Shankar confining her sitarand piano to the background. Slither, the second track, impresses with aninnovative mixing of the sitar, acousticguitar and morsing. Vishwa Mohan Bhattand his mohan veena create magic.Breathing under water is sitar-centric.Sting lends his silky voice to SeaDreamer, while the sitar that you heardin Breathing Under Water comes backagain and sounds more complete than inthe previous rendition.Kales electronic bass is SunidhiChauhans main accomplice in GhostStory, lending a ghazal-like melody acontemporary feel. If an operatic musical

was set to Hindustani, it would soundlike Little glass folk. Commendable forthe way it fuses some very divergentforms.

    Take me back to Francois

Rachelle van ZantenThe acoustic slide guitar features widely on this 14 track CD by Canadiasinger Rachelle van Zanten. The piano and cello add to the poignancy oher songs, which if you look at the subject deal with finding truth in lifafter all the substance abuse and relationship break-ups. However, it issongs like January that gives us the peephole experience of living on thprairies in Alberta. Most of the songs, like January have allegorical

references to the landscape: 45 below 0 on the prairies Dont know why Im alone thisJanuary Sun goes down a little sooner than Id like it to And I just cant wait til FebruaVan Zantens sultry voice, and if you catch her live performance, make for quiet alistening none of that head-banging and foot stomping, rather replace it with swayingand tapping, which does make this the ideal CD for a long car ride. Songs like Take meright back and A hole in the way, which have strong electric and bass guitarriffs make them hummable songs, and with repeated playing, karaokemaybe?

    Confluence II Rahul Sharma

and Richard ClaydermanI started listening to this CD with some apprehension of the fusionmusic I was likely to encounter. Sharmas santoor and Claydermans piancreate a variety of sounds, such as the Bollywood hip-hop-like Fragrant

night or the Latin pop flavour to Forbidden Dreams, which if Im notwrong, has a sample from Jennifer Lopezs Lets get Loud. The music is soothing, which at the same time is experimental, and will

make you scout out the ingredients that have contributed to the wholesome sound ofeach song. The chase continues is one of my favourite tracks, which like the name suggests hassounds that remind you of old movie car chase scenes from The Thief, perhaps the JamesBond series where a sultry voice whispers on a bed of techno violin snatches and the beof all, wait for it the purring of a car forms the background as we envision AmitabhBachchan getaways that best remind you of pulp fiction. The jugalbandi that the two artists provide is an eye-opener that fusion need not alwabe a clichd , done-to-death genre and can be inventive as Confluence II.Who says classical music is for fogies?

The Assassins SongM.G. Vassanji, a Kenya-born Canadianauthor of Gujarati descent who was raisedin Tanzania, is not especially well-knownin India; the first I heard of him wasironically from a British Professor ofCreative Writing, who stronglyrecommended The Gunny Sack.

The Assassins Song is the first of Vassanjis novels to beset principally in India, although the location swingsfrom a 13th century village in what is now Gujarat, toHarvard, to British Columbia and finally back to Haripirin Gujarat. The protagonist Karsans forefathers were theKeeper of the Pirbaag shrine, a symbol of Hindu-Muslimco-existence for centuries, established when the Sufimystic (and a member of the ancient sect of theAssassins) Nur Fazal arrived in Patan and came to beregarded as a holy man, Pir Bawa. Now, centuries later,

in the 1960s Karsan himself is next in line, but rejects hisrole as a God to his people, thus establishing the centraltension of the novel.Vassanji, a trained nuclear physicist with degrees fromMIT and the University of Pennsylvania, writes with acompelling sense of brevity and clarity of thought --traits that seemingly went out of fashion after GeorgeOrwell and V.S. Naipaul, who were great authorities onthe politics of migration.

    Classically Mild

Sonu NiigaamFirst of all, whats with the Niigaam? SonuNiigaams attempt to go back to his rootsleaves you quite confused. And you realise thathe could have kept the album either classicalor mild. Hes come a long way since Ab mujheraat din, only to present a glamorous hotch-

potch of something he could have done much better.Sochta hoon main, the first in the album, is a feeble attemptto mix Jazz with Hindustani. The first thing that strikes you when you listen to Bheegebheege is its striking resemblance to Dil Chahta HaisTanhayee, both in terms of the brooding quality and natureof lyrics. Its one of the nicer songs of the album if you dontmind dj vu.Soona soona, again, opens with jazz, delves into Desh raga, brings in a little Carnatic and goes back to jazz again.Chhalki chhalki is nice, feel-good and typically Sonu, the onewho likes to go unnecessarily high-pitched once in a while.Lamha lamha is another high-point of the album, primarilybecause here Mr. Niigaam sticks to his strength and doesntveer off course with too many innovations.Reserved for the last is Aai dil mat ro that brings in thesound of water to put to music what the lyricssay. Not bad at all. Credit here to musiccomposer Deepak Pandit.

The television in Britain istoo white and does notreflect the lives of Asiansand Afro-Caribbeans living

in the country, a study revealedon Thursday.

The research, led by TrevorPhilips, chief of the Equality andHuman Rights Commission, was conducted after the allegedracist abuse of Bollywood ac-tress Shilpa Shetty on the realityshow Big brother last.

It found that Black and Asianviewers felt that despite thegrowing number of ethnic mi-norities living in UK, they arestill under-represented on hit

television shows.Phillips said that all evidences

prove that television is still hid-eously white where it matters.

Most ethnic minority partic-ipants felt that the media has aresponsibility to reflect Britains

diversity across all genres and was failing to do so in threemain ways: by relying on toke-nistic and stereotyped repre-sentation of characters; byrepresenting extreme and exag-gerated characters; and by fail-ing to reflect the realities ofcontemporary ethnic minorityculture, he said.

The studys findings, reportedin the Daily Telegraph onThursday, finds that when non-

whites did appear in dramasand soaps, they are often tokencharacters stereotyped as Asianshopkeepers.

you can hear a tiny heart-beat, but these babies forsale over the Internet are

    not alive.Reborn babies are discon-

certingly life-like baby dolls care-fully crafted in vinyl, which havebecome swiftly popular mainlywith collectors, but also with nos-talgic grandparents and grieving

parents.Made and collected by an on-

line community of enthusiasts, they are painted several times tocreate the mottled colour of new-born skin, have mohair hair andeyelashes, and are weighted tomake them feel as heavy as hu-man babies.

owadays, especially in the West, this self-confidencebusiness has become a big

fad. Everybody wants toknow how to be confident. Every-body tells you, believe in your-self. Slowly, this has seeped intothe Indian coast also. When peo-ple believed in God, they didenough horrible things on theplanet. Now they believe in them-selves; this is going to produce farmore horrible things!

Confidence is not a solution tolife. If you did not have confi-dence, you would gently feel yourway through the world. But thecombination of stupidity andconfidence makes one walk bla-tantly on this planet. The wholeof humanity is walking very bla-tantly on this planet with ter-rible confidence.

A man can work in many di-mensions in this world. One is byusing his body and mind, and theother is by using his inner clarity. It is only through clarity that onecan gain ultimate strength.

One way, one can cultivate thisspace of inner clarity and bal-ance, is through the practice of

yoga. The word yoga itself meansunion. The ultimate goal of yo-ga is to become one with

tem, we will find that the body, mind and emotions will functionperfectly well. Through yogicpractices, ones energy attains astate of balance that naturally be-comes tuned with the body andthe mind, allowing one to reach astate of inner clarity.

Even simple practices can go along way in creating this. Everyday when you wake up in themorning, sit up on your bed, sitcross-legged, sit with your handsopen, eyes closed and just look ateverything you are not. Appre-ciate all that you have gathered

    Why do I need iron?

Iron is needed to make haemo-globin the oxygen-carryingcomponent of red blood cells. There are two types of iron foundin food: heme and non-heme.

Your body absorbs heme ironmore easily than non-heme iron.

However, foods containing non-heme iron are also very impor-tant in your diet.

How much do I need?Young women need 15-30 mil-ligrams of iron a day.

    Iron deficiencycan lead to learn-

    ing and beha-vioural

    problems. Itcan also lead

    to anaemia, acondition in which

there is a decrease in the numberof red blood cells. Remember, if

you are anaemic you dont tendto show any outward signs and

symptoms. Watch out for indirectsymptoms like fatigue and weak-ness, pale skin, rapid heartbeat,

Are you in your twenties andabout to get married? Do

you skip breakfast regular-ly? If that be the case, apart

from risking your health you arealso putting the life of your future

child at risk.Dr. Gomathy Shivaji, Consult-

ant Nutritionist, says, The pre-pregnancy stage in girls is theperiod when young girlsneed to consumeiron-rich foods.Skippingbreakfast

    will put awoman and

    her child atrisk.

    Also, it iswrong to as-

sume that eating healthyfood when pregnant will lead to ahealthy baby. Women with irondeficiency give birth to low birth-

weight babies. These babies areprone to infections and the mor-tality rate is also high.

    irritability, decreased appetite ordizziness.

    All about iron-rich food

Dried fruitsDried fruits like dates, al-

monds, apricots, prunes and rai-sins are rich in iron. Dates are

excellent for those who sufferfrom anaemia. All dates have areasonable amount of fibre andare a rich source of potassium.Raisins are natural energy boost-ers. Around 100gm of raisins con-tain more than 25 per cent of therecommended daily allowancefor women.

EggIron in egg yolk is poorly ab-

sorbed. So, along with eggs, it isadvisable to have vitamin C foodslike tomatoes, oranges and straw-berries.

    Watermelons Watermelons are laden with

iron, vitamins A and C, betacaro-tene, lycopen, iron, zinc, potassi-um and other nutritive minerals,

making them twice as efficient in

all kinds of diets. These help lose weight or stay

fit and also give the body all thevitamins and nutrients it needs tocontinue functioning in an ap-propriate manner.

    GreensDark green, leafy vegetables

such as spinach, chard and col-lard greens are good sources ofiron because they tend to be lowin calories and are rich in vita-mins and minerals.

Fish and meatIron in fish is well absorbed.

Shellfish and tuna are rich iniron. Red meat like beef, pork and

liver has more iron content thanwhite meat. However, liver is notadvisable for pregnant women as

    it contains vitamin A, whic

    harmful for babies.

    Vegetables Vegetables that suppl

iron are potatoes (with sspinach, broccoli, cabbage, pturnip, moong bean sproutstomato juice. Baked beans, bbeans, chickpeas, kidney band lima beans also provide to the body.

    Harbhajan Singh does not

doubt mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis potentialsbut the star off-spinner be-

lieves it is old trickster MuttiahMuralitharan who would pose big-ger threat for the Indian batsmenin the forthcoming Test series.Harbhajan heaps praise on Men-dis, who ran through Indiasfamed ODI batting order in the

Asia Cup final in Karachi, and saidit was an extraordinary display ofquality spin bowling.

It was a treat to watch Mendisbowl during the Asia Cup final,Harbhajan said. The deliveries

with which he got Yuvraj Singh,Rohit Sharma and even RP Singh

were outstanding. I have seen peo-

ple doing this with a tennis ballbut it is incredible that he is doingit with a cricket ball. There is somuch to learn from Mendis, saidHarbhajan. But still its too early tocompare Mendis with Murali andthe old warhorse would createmore problem for the Indian side, believes Harbhajan.

It will be Muralitharan who willpose a bigger challenge and do

well in the series and not Mendis. You cannot compare Mendis andMurali. Oh, come on, Murali hasbeen doing it for so many years

    whereas Mendis has just started,

    he reasoned.The aggressive off-spinner him-

self would have to live up to theexpectation in the series, to provethat he remains the same potentforce despite spending the lastthree months in the wildernessfollowing the slap-gate episode. Iam ready for it. In fact to s it on thesidelines has made me hungrierand I am willing to play any rolethat the team wants me to, saidHarbhajan, who remains out of ac-tion since slapping India team-mate S Sreesanth after an IndianPremier League match. One afteranother controversy has stalkedHarbhajan but the off-spinnersays he now wants people to re-

member him for all the right rea-sons. I committed a mistake and Iadmitted it. I think we all need tomove on from there and lookahead. From now on, peopleshould remember me for all theright reasons and not controver-sies, he said. Charlesworth slams Olympic qualifying processAustralian field hockey legend Ric Charlesworth says he is not impressed with the new Olympicqualifying system that kept both India and Argentina away from Beijing. I never liked the newprocess as I knew it would throw up anomalies, Charlesworth, who resigned this month as Indiastechnical advisor said. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) awarded direct entries to nine teamsbased on their performance in regional meets, with the remaining three berths going to the winnersof three separate qualifying tournaments. A team that did not automatically make the grade couldtake part in only one qualifying event and needed to win it to go to Beijing. Eight-time goldmedallists India lost to Britain in the final of the qualifying tournament in Chile in April and will missthe Olympics for the first time. World number seven Argentina, one place higher than India, lost toCanada in the Pan-American Games and then went down to New Zealand in the Olympic qualifier inAuckland. Both Argentina and India are clearly in the best 12, so its a pity they are not in theOlympics, said Charlesworth.

Indias Belarussian table tennis coach Alek-sey Yefremov says Achanta Sharath Ka-mal and Neha Aggarwals success in theBeijing Olympics would depend on how

well they handle the pressure of playing atthe biggest sporting extravaganza of theworld. Sharath and Neha would be the onlyIndian representatives in table tennis in theBeijing Olympic Games starting August 8.

Its very important to be mentally strong, especially while you are participating in a bigtournament like the Olympic Games. Pressureof this particular tournament is higher thanthat of others and the players should be ableto counter it effectively, Yefremov said. TheBelarussian coach said the Indian paddlerswould face strong competition from theirAsian counterparts and a good draw wouldhelp tilt the balance in their favour. Asian

countries like Korea and China have some ve-

ry good players who can throw out strongchallenge to the Indian players. Besides, players from the European countries, includ-ing Belarus and Germany would be tough op-ponents for them. Yes, a better draw wouldcertainly be helpful for them in Olympics, hesaid.

All eyes on SharathOn Sharath, who is currently in Spain for a

special training programme, Yefremov insist-ed that the world no 79 has a very goodchance to make it to the pre-quarterfinal lev-el. He has potential and I think he will gointo the tournament much confident becauseof his exposure trip to Europe.

Theres talk of an Oscar push for HeathLedger as the Joker in The Dark Knight, which officially opens on Friday.

Ill tell you this: Put him up as bestsupporting actor and hes already won.

Ledger, who died this year, is the films

    lasting, most illuminating impression.The Dark Knight has bombs; bullets;

car chases with gigantic and loud crash-es; brutal, sadistic murders; and a castthat sometimes appears as big as GothamCity. But it is Ledgers performance movie-goers will likely be talking about the most.

His scenes are plentiful, stoked with fiery, bizarre delivery and a snakes forever-movingtongue. He and his movie are full of surprises, too.Seriously, one of his most effective lines is simply, Hi.

Some critics are already piling up praise for Ledger and themovie.

Richard Corliss of Time: This Joker is simply one of the mosttwisted and mesmerizing creeps in movie history.

Justin Chang of Variety: Seriously brainy pop entertainment.Christy Lemire, Associated Press: An epic that will leave you

staggering from the theater.Warner Bros. screened the film this week for metro Atlanta

critics.Heres more of what fans will likely be talking about:

    Cox News Service

THE DARKNESS: Like theprevious Batman movies,

this one is steeped in deepblues and menacing blacks.

Most of the actionsequences occur at night.

Destruction occurs not onlyin Gotham City, but in

    Hong Kong.

    THE IMAX: Sixscenes have action

    footage filmedusing Imax format

    cameras.

THE PENCIL: The Joker usesmany tricks and props. One of

the first is when he asks a

group of onlookers to watchhim make this pencildisappear. What follows is one

of the most memorablemoments of this summers

    action movies.

THE CAMERA: DirectorChristopher Nolans favouriteshot seems to be to have his

camera swirl 180 degreesaround his subjects. He does it

again and again. He also movesclose to frame Ledgers face ofhorrid pancaked makeup andbacks up for a wide, distantshot of Gothams population

(most rendered in CGI)desperately waiting at a series

of bridges to get out of thethreatened city.

THE LENGTH: Each timeyou think the film is going

to end, theres more coming. At 2 hours, 20 minutes, there

are plentiful actionsequences. Still, the film can

seem to go on and on.Bob Longino writes forThe Atlanta Journal-

    Constitution. E-mail:blongino AT ajc.com.

THE CO-STARS: Joining Christian Bale(as Batman) and Ledger is a full nest of

dependable supporting players, including Morgan Freeman (returning asLucius Fox), Michael Caine (returning as

    Alfred Pennyworth), Gary Oldman

(returning as Lt. James Gordon), MaggieGyllenhaal (as Rachel Dawes) and,

especially, Aaron Eckhart (as districtattorney Harvey Dent). But the talent

extends to minor characters: Eric Roberts(as a mob boss), William Fichtner as a

bank manager and Michael Jai White (asa crime figure).

Those of you who willcatch the Dark Knightversus Joker fight onscreen over theweekend, write to usyour verdict on themovie, running notmore than 75 words, [email protected]. Wewill carry that with

    credit next week.
