The condition of young girls inShoolagiri is pitiable. They have to do household chores before rushing to school. With only twobuses plying in the village, chil-dren are bound to miss the class and hence fail in their examina-tions. Once out of school, they are married off, then they are ha-rassed for dowry and later they commit suicide .

Samuel Venkatesan summedup the life of an average vil-lage girl in Tamil Nadu from birth to death for the

next 10 minutes. Listening to the17-year-olds talk in chaste Tamil was an august audience repre-senting the G8 summit in Rome.

On Thursday, Samuel recount-ed all his J8 experiences at a pressconference.

He is among the three Indianstudents who represented thecountry in the Junior 8 (J8) sum-mit. Sanjukta Pangi from Orissaand Narendra Kumar from UttarPradesh, his counterparts, spokeon equal rights for the girl child, school transport and quality edu-cation.

    ChatterboxTwo years ago, Nalanda Way

was in Krishnagiri to select stu-dents for training in lmmaking,an initiative they did jointly withthe UNICEF. For the audition I was asked to speak on any topicof interest for a few minutes. I ama chatterbox and I spoke as

usual, recalls Samuel, who is therst person from his village inKrishnagiri district to completesecondary education.

Thanks to the training given by the NGO, Samuel already has twoshort lms Accham Thavir and

Nipped in the bud to his credit. His other credential: Samuel is astudent reporter and writes forVaandu Soundu, a newsletter cir-culated in schools, Collectorateand other government organisa-tions in the district.

Call for J8 While J8 and his meeting with

other delegates will remain a his-tory, Samuel cannot forget re-counting his rst ight journey.

When I told my mom she was worried, he says about his moth-er who is a domestic helper inBangalore. Plane la pogaatha..adhu thannikulla vizhundirum ..(Do not travel by ight. It will fall

into water), were Shantas initialreactions when Samuel said hehas to y to Rome. It is his ma-ternal uncle, Ramamurthy, a lorry driver, who supports his educa-tion. He gave him condence tocarry on.

Rome was very beautiful anthe Italian Parliament was huge. Ialso met Italian Youth MinisterShe was always smiling and liked her. My rst dinner ther was fun. I was waiting to have grand feast, but they gave me something like our snacks in smalportions. With that they said thedinner was over, Samuel jabbersaway innocently.

Ladies rstBut Samuel also has an unfu

lled wish, that he missed thchance to meet Prime MinisterManmohan Singh. My counter-parts knew Hindi and they wereat ease, but everything was Gree

and Latin for me. They showeme a piece of paper and told meto sign on it. Only later I realiseSanjukta Pangi was the personselected to meet him, he smiles

However, he pacied himsesaying, Its always ladies rst our country. One thing was fosure, Samuel was everyones favourite drawing attention fohis sign language but still mingling with the guests. For instance, Samuel spoke for close toan hour to an Italian Chef, saySatish of NalandaWay, who accompanied him to the Summit.

To the pointSo, what was Samuels learnin

experiences. Many. We shared alot, I actually learnt about childright in Rome, he says. The student of vocational training, how-ever, is sad that he and manyothers like him in Indian villagecannot speak English. When thechildren of developed countriesdemand right to watch movies we from the developing countriesask for basic education, he concludes, saying he will implementhe action plan of the J8 in hivillage.

Taking a lead from their Hollywood counterparts, Bollywood starsare getting online, using the Internet to get closer to their fans.

Actresses from Shilpa Shetty and Celina Jaitley to actors AamirKhan, Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are posting photos,

videos and their thoughts on lms and life on personal websites.Social networking sites like Facebook and Orkut are also a preferred

medium to keep fans up to date with new releases and events. And although no Bollywood star has yet to surpass US actor Ashton

Kutchers massive 2.75 million followers on Twitter, Bollywood is alsotaking to the micro-blogging site to interact with fans without tradi-tional media lters.

Leading star Priyanka Chopra says writing is therapeutic and thatshe is now hooked on Twitter.

It started as a lark, a quest of discovery, and now I nd my ngerstwitching for my Nokia or my laptop wherever something interesting happens, she told The Hindustan Times .

I have great fun interacting with my Tweeps. At least they believeits the real me, unlike some of you guys, who still arent sure that itsme reading your mails.

    Chopras Twitter feed - www.twitter.com/priyankachopra - reveals

her recent thoughts on everything from Michael Jacksons death toupdates about her shooting schedule and even the monsoon rains.Sonam Kapoor follows a similar line, tweeting on the banal, like

her favourite television shows, to her next lm project, Aisha , based onEnglish author Jane Austens 1815 novel Emma .

Mayank Shekhar, national cultural editor at The Hindustan Times ,said the switch to technology - despite the low Internet penetration inIndia - makes perfect sense given the growing hunger for Bollywoodnews.

Theres been an increase in the number of newspapers and televi-sion stations that are after the same ve people. Most newspapershave ve to 10 pages (on Bollywood) every day, he said.

Bachchan, for example, updates his blog bigb.bigadda.com daily, musing at length on life and responding personally to his many fanscomments. He also picks apart every news item written about him, giving his own response.

Most recently, the 66-year-old has been giving updates on his healthafter a recurring stomach complaint.

Reporters got the entire story from his blog. All the information was

in his post that day. It was as good as the reporter having spoken tohim, said Shekhar. Actor Aamir Khan also ew into a storm after writing on his website

www.aamirkhan.com that he had named one of his dogs Shah Rukh, fuelling the rivalry between him and his namesake Shah Rukh Khan.

But mostly, new technology is used to maintain a strong fan base.People nd it awesome that a movie star writes to them, said

    Shekhar. AFP

If he plays to the end of the series, whether Andrew (Flintoff) wanted it that way or not, Ive beenin teams where its happened in Australia, and it can be distracting. Knowing the stature he has in

the game in England, I can see it turning into a farewell tour. The know this is his last chance to play hereand then at Edgbaston and Headingley and so on Im sure there will be a bit of a circus around him.

David Beckham says he expectsto nd another half-year loandeal ahead of the World Cupnext year to keep himself in En-

gland manager Fabio Capellos plansfor the tournament in South Africa.Beckham spent the Major LeagueSoccer (MLS) off-season and therst part of this current season onloan at AC Milan in Italy and said hehoped to nd a similar arrangementnext year.

Leading up to the World Cup, theEngland manager has made it very clear to me that I need to be playing ata European level, Beckham said

ahead of his return match for LA Gal-axy against rivals New York Red Bulls. So I will do everything possible... Illalways regret it if I didnt do everyth-ing and to give myself a chance to beinvolved in that. At the moment my priority is the rest of the season andalso playing and keeping in every squad for England and representing my country... Going forward of courseI want to be involved in the WorldCup, Ive not hidden that fact.

Beckhams extended loan with Mi-lan upset many at the Galaxy, withresentment spilling over into a publicspat with team-mate Landon Dono-van who questioned his commitmentto the team. The pair have said theirdifferences are water under the

bridge, but the prospect of Beckhamnot starting next season with theteam he is contracted to is unlikely to win over sceptical fans.

Coach unconcernedGalaxy coach Bruce Arena, howev-

er, said he was unconcerned aboutany disruption that might be causedby Beckhams movements. I think having David Beckham on our team is just a fabulous asset. It was a little bitawkward, the loan process, but fully within the conditions of his contract. And we were fully in agreement withit and signed off on it. We knew thepros and cons attributed with Davidleaving on loan, he said. Ive had a

great 30 years coach-ing. This is a high point. Not a low point. Itsfabulous to have aplayer of this calibreon our squad. I look forward to working with David the re-mainder of the season.

Beckham, who previous-ly stated he would like another stint with Milan, said re-joining the Serie A club would by no means lead to aplace in the World Cup squad, wereEngland to qualify. At the momentall Im concentrating on is being partof this team (L.A) and being success-ful with this team. Once the season isover, then I will decide and decide

what I do from then on.Aiming for South Africa

Beckham said a six-month deal wasnecessary to be in top shape for selec-tion, rather than a shorter January-to-March deal that would t in the MLSoff-season. I think it would have tobe (six months), obviously, leading upto the World Cup. But with the lastloan, it worked out pretty well, he said. Im not going to sit here and say it was ide-al and it was perfect, be-cause at the end of the day it was great for myself.

Ever since Prabal Gurung lefthis employer in the gar-ment district, last winter, and sank his savings into

his own label, at the worst pos-sible time, he has been moreaware of the silly and duplicitousnature of fashion. It may just behim, or the economy, but hedoesnt think so.

Gurung learned to make beau-tiful clothes at Bill Blass. Therewas really no reason for a youngman to work at a dusty rm likeBlass except to learn things thatonly old tailors knew. He stayedve years. But when friends inthe industry heard of his plans tostart a line, they seemed to for-

get about tailoring and craft. They told him he should makeclothes like Balmain.

Gurung wanted to laugh. Bal-main was hot, but he couldntsee how it beneted anyone tohave another designer do torn

    jeans and $12,000 beaded mini-dresses.

Its not my voice, he said. Before the recession hit, the

sophisticated voice was someth-ing that American buyers andeditors said they wanted to see.It was as though the system, atleast in New York, had becomeawash in brand-spouting hip-sters, trust-fund kids with hand-bag lines and Project Runway

rejects. Where were the smartgrown-ups?Gurung, a calm, observant 30-

year-old who grew up in Kat-mandu, in Nepal, impressed peo-ple at his debut in February. Hisclothes had conspicuous polish, both in sensibility and cut. No-body uses the word chic much to-day, but thats what they were. His lanky cashmere jackets, mas-culine trousers in wool or leath-er, and splashes of feathersrecalled Saint Laurent. The pro-portions were modern.

Womens Wear Daily put hisone-shoulder red silk faille dresson its cover. Four stores boughtthe line, including Blooming-

dales and DNA, a boutique in Ryadh, Saudi Arabia, owned bPrincess Deena Abdulaziz, whosadvance payment helped Gurung pay some bills.

Young and goingAlthough sexier, the clothes o

Joseph Altuzarra, another newdesigner (he spent two years atGivenchy), have also shown uusual nesse. Altuzarra, 25, whdesigns and produces his clothein Europe but lives in a smaone-bedroom apartment on Lex-ington Avenue, admits he ipushed by the creativity of European stars like Nicolas Ghequiere of Balenciaga. Yet th

designer he probably admiremost is Tom Ford, the formeGucci creative director, becaushe knew what women wantedat a certain moment.

Altuzarras draped dresses iivory or lilac georgette dressewith ruched details express thabalance between extreme mo-dernity and feminine practicality. In business for two seasonhe picked up half a dozen newstores for fall, including HoRenfrew and Colette in Paris, iaddition to Barneys and Ikram iChicago (the pipeline retailer toMichelle Obama).

Despite the terrifying economic news of last winter and then

the broad reappraisal of luxuryspending, Gurung and Altuzarrawhose prices are $1,500 t$2,500, have done pretty well fothemselves.

Yet it is clear from talking tthem that their main strugglehas been with the expectationsof an industry that has enjoyedtoo much money and celebrity, iprone to mystication and is faslosing the ability to recognizwhat makes a design original omodern _ and not.

Ive certainly been told whoneed to be hanging out with,Gurung said one afternoon in hitiny studio apartment on EasFourth Street. Although th

Five or six years ago buyers ex-pected to nd a young designersleeping in a hole next to his fab-rics. Thats where they found Mi-guel Adrover. He had evenstopped paying the rent, he wasso down and out. Now, though, they expect to see a designer in aluxury apartment he cant pos-sibly afford.

    So Gurung obliges. Thats thegame.

I like being frugal, he said.It limits you; it makes youthink. Because of the recessionhe has been able to get deals onfabrics. And because of his back-ground on Seventh Avenue, hehas been able to negotiate with

local factories eager for extrasewing to keep their workers bu-sy. You have to go to Nepal tounderstand what real difcultyis, he said. The East Village its not that bad.

Both Gurung and Altuzarrasaid they had received good ad-vice from retailers. Altuzarra, who started his business withmoney from his father, an invest-ment banker, and recently need-ed a new injection to coverproduction costs said buyerswanted to see more variety in hisline. They said American womenwouldnt wear dresses without abra.

Only a diminutive 1 metre55 (ve foot one) in her stock-ing feet, for half a century she was the favourite designer of petite women.

In recognition of her contri-bution to fashion and immi-nent birthday on August 31,the French Federation of Cou-ture threw a party for her inthe gardens of the Musee Gal-liera at the end of the haute-couture shows for next winter.

I know this place very well. This is where I always showedmy collections, she told AFP.

Frustrated by the lack of clothes suitable for small women like herself, Carmende Tommaso dropped plansto become an architect or in-terior designer and took theremedy into her own hands. In 1945, she opened her ownhouse under the name Car-ven. Her fresh and carefreestyle was an immediate hit with actresses like Leslie Ca-ron and Martine Carol and young girls around the world, including the future wife of President Valery Giscard dEs-taing, whose wedding dressshe designed.

Couture brought me greathappiness, the joy of creating.I did everything I could tomake women beautiful, shesays, still immaculate herself in an elegant green suit, herfavourite colour, with a pearlnecklace.

I started out withoutanyone. Now you need a

sponsor, everything is very ex-pensive, very difcult.

Culture Minister FredericMitterrand, nephew of thelate Socialist President, paidtribute to her as one of themost eminent creative forcesin French and internationalfashion.

On a more personal note,he recalled that his motherwas always dressed by Mad-ame Carven and that for himshe felt like part of thefamily.

For all agesI sold Carven Junior dress-

es and took the Carven Juniorcollection to the United Statesin 1964, he admitted. In theimmediate post-war years, marked by the return toprominence of male designerslike Christian Dior and Jac-ques Fath, Madame Carvenwas something of an excep-tion, according to FlorenceMiller, who teaches at theFrench Fashion Institute.

She had the intuition toappeal to young girls at a time when the couturiers mostly dressed older women.

Her style was practical, at-tering, very feminine, very close to what women actually wanted, she explained. She wasnt into building a spec-tacular image for her label, like Dior, for example.

Madame Carven only nal-ly gave up designing in 1993,in her 84th year, to concen-trate on her passion for oldfurniture and antiques. Today her house is owned by the Pa-ris group SCM and has aban-doned hautecouture to focuson ready-to-wear.

Y et another foreign directorhas set his sights on Mum-bais slums. After Danny Boyles dark and passion-ate look at the city in Slumdog Millionaire , it is American di-rector Paul Schraders turn tomake a lm in Mumbai.

Schrader is set to direct Ex-treme City , a Mumbai-based un-derworld drama. Produced by Anubhav Sinha, the lm will beshot in and around the slums of Dharavi and will star both Hol-lywood and Bollywood stars.

I cant deny theres tremen-dous interest in another Mum-bai slum saga after Slumdog Millionaire . But our project wasrmed in much before Dannyslm released, said Sinha, whohad a hush-hush meeting withthe director-producer.

Mumbai, already under muchglobal scrutiny after Slumdog Millionaire , is expected to getmore tourist boost with Schrad-ers lm.

To have Schrader agree tomake a lm for me is a dreamcome true. Paul came down toIndia rst in July. When I sug-gested he make a lm for me, he was surprised. Paul Schradermaking a lm for an Indian pro-

    ducer does sound strange,doesnt it?

He didnt give an immediateanswer. But at the Toronto FilmFestival in October 2008 he -nally agreed. Hes writing anddirecting a drama-thriller tenta-tively titled Extreme City for me. Weve otherwise been interact-ing for two years, said Sinha, who has directed lms like Cash(2007) Dus (2005) Tum Bin(2001).

Schraders scriptural collabo-rations with Martin Scorsese formovies like Taxi Driver andRaging Bull and his hugely in-uential directorial projects like American Gigolo, Cat People Mishima and Hardcore havemade an impact on several lm-makers.

Extreme City will be shot lar-gely in Mumbai and Schrader will soon nalise his script forthe lm.

Paul has started work on thescript. Itll be an English-lan-guage lm. But the Indian char-acters will speak their naturallanguage. The Mumbai under- world is familiar to Hindi lm-goers but not to a global au-dience, said Sinha.
