The Epiphany of the Lord

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Epiphany celebrates God’s mercy shining on the magi from a guiding star. Their kingdoms were far from Jerusalem, their religions far from God’s covenant with Israel. At first the star led the magi to Jerusalem, where they could “recalculate” their quest with the help of God’s own “GPS,” the Jewish scriptures. How challenging and humbling for the magi to discover that they would find the world’s Messiah not in a palace but with a poor couple in an insignificant village. That’s where God’s mercy, shining in the star, led the magi to worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Today the magi invite us to “recalculate” our life’s journey during this Jubilee Year—to follow the star of God’s mercy along the way of humble love, to discover a renewed personal relationship with Jesus ourselves and so become “guiding stars” leading other seekers to find Jesus, too. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Several years ago, our family’s longtime neighbor died. She had no children. My mom had helped her in her later years, so we weren’t surprised when she received some money from the estate. What was shocking was that a check arrived at my house as well. I hadn’t done anything to deserve this money; I had always been polite and kind to our neighbor and had visited her sometimes, but I was amazed at her generosity. Without knowing it, I had become an heir to this lovely woman. On this Solemnity of the Epiphany, we celebrate our own unexpected inheritance—the quite undeserved gift of Jesus. Saint Paul writes that the Gentiles are “co-heirs” to this great gift, but what have we done to deserve such grace? Our culture tells us how much we “deserve” (clothes and so on). But in the simplest of places—the tiniest of towns, this little hamlet of Bethlehem—comes a gift we could never do enough to deserve. The Magi recognized this—they prostrated themselves in homage and were changed by their encounter with Jesus. They “went home a different way”—not just physically but spiritually. As the Christmas season winds down and the long awaited gifts are unwrapped and put away, maybe we can look at the gift of Jesus with Epiphany eyes. May we welcome Jesus today like an unexpected inheritance check—with delighted hearts, humble spirits, and grateful souls. Janel Esker [email protected]

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. 8 Week Bible Study A Deep, Biblical Look at Jesus Christ Wednesday, January 13, 2016 to Wednesday, March 2, 2016

The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King, you’ll discover Jesus as the Anointed One–the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Bishop Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. Through this deeply biblical program, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission, received when you are baptized “into Christ.” Registration forms can be found on our website, Parish office or Church Literature rack or contact Gundy Dahm at 843-379-6767.

ALOHA CHRISTMAS

SGGCS presented their gift to the community with their Christmas program titled ‘Aloha Christmas.’ The program, directed by SGGCS music teacher Linda Burkett, focused on finding the spirit of Christmas in a different setting. The program opened with special songs by the tone chime choir, the pre-kindergarten class in Hawaiian attire and the kindergarten class dressed as a living Nativity.

YEAR OF MERCY The Year of Mercy is meant to be one of those times — a season for Christians to become “stronger and more effective” witnesses to the faith we proclaim, changed both by contemplating the depths of God’s mercy and by imitating Christ in the world today (Misericordiae Vultus, No. 3). To help make that possible, the Holy Father used Misericordiae Vultus not only to reflect on God’s mercy but also to outline a course of action. In it, he offered a series of practical suggestions for how Catholics should celebrate the Year of Mercy ahead.

Catholic Book Club Meeting

The next meeting of the Catholic Book Club is Friday, January 8, from 9:30-11:00 AM in St. Gregory School library. The selection this time is "Woman," by Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross). Her essays on women appear in a number of collections, available on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Any edition can be used as a resource for the discussion, which will focus on women's education, women's professional life, women in political life, and the spirituality of Christian women. Edith Stein was a trained philosopher who converted from Judaism to Catholicism and became a Carmelite nun. She was a victim of Nazi persecution, killed in Auschwitz in 1942. She was beatified and canonized by St. John Paul II.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Help Us Plan For Our Future!

As was announced at all Masses the weekend of December 5th and 6th, we have embarked upon a feasibility study which will outline to you the current plan for our future and ask for your feedback. In this study, members of our parish will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about the parish and the path to our future.

A letter containing the case statement along with a questionnaire has been sent to each active parishioner. In addition, some of you may be asked to participate in a confidential interview regarding these matters. The case statement outlines our plans and asks you to provide candid and confidential feedback on all aspects of the parish and the potential projects.

Your responses will impact directly our course of action. All of your responses are completely confidential as they will go directly to Lynch Development Associates Inc., the company coordinating this study.

They will be providing us with an objective suggested course of action based on your responses. Please note that no decision will be made until the Feasibility Study has been completed.

Your participation is vital to the success of the study. We ask that you please return your questionnaire prior to January 8, 2016. Thank you for your help and your continued support of St. Gregory the Great.
