January 16, 2022 Dear Friends in Christ, Perhaps the most-admired American in all our history is George Washington. His leadership and character helped forge our own national character and image of leadership. For instance, after the Treaty of Paris was signed and the Revolutionary War ended, Washington resigned as Commander-in-Chief, which helped to establish civilian control of the military in our young country. Then, after two terms as president, Washington declined to run for a third term, which helped establish the two-term limit for presidents and the tradition of the peaceful handing over of power. Washington was well-loved and admired by the people and politicians alike, and he was considered a man of the highest moral character. And yet, as is often pointed out today, George Washington was a slave owner. We who live more than 15o years after the abolition of slavery in our country rightly feel a sense of revulsion and horror at the thought of race-based, generational chattel slavery. This should be especially true for Christians, who believe that the dignity of each human person comes from being created in the image and likeness of God and that Jesus Christ died for the salvation of all, no matter their racial or ethnic background. For those who confess Jesus Christ as Lord, each human life is sacred. But this Christian understanding of the inherent evils of slavery raises an important question: if Washington and our Founding Fathers were truly such extraordinary and exceptional men, how could they not see the evils of slavery? The search for the answer takes us deep into the mystery of evil and the fallen human heart. Because of our fallen nature and Original Sin, we have inherited concupiscence, a destructive desire and tendency to sin. We also live in a state of alienation from God, from one another, and from our own true selves. Our intellect has been darkened and our ability to know and respond to grace is diminished. The result is this: we cannot always perfectly and completely know our sins. When considering Washington and the other Founding Fathers as slave holders, we should remember that until very recently slavery was more the norm than the exception in human societies, and that it was their work to establish a nation based on the principles of governance by, of, and for the people that helped bring about the abolition of slavery in the West. Washington himself began to seriously question the institution of slavery, and in his will stipulated that some of his slaves be freed. All of this is to say that it can be very difficult to recognize and turn away from social sin, and that great social changes like the abolition of slavery take place slowly, as the moral character of a people is more perfectly conformed to Christ. So, why do I mention all of this today? This coming Saturday, January 22nd, is the anniversary of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision which required all states to legalize abortion on demand in the US. The Church remembers this day each year as the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. The Church in the United States has been working for many years to bring an end to abortion on demand, and at times we may ask, “How long, O Lord, how long shall my enemy be exalted over me?” Or, given the obvious brutality and violence of abortion, we may ask ourselves, “How do those who support abortion under the banner of ‘reproductive rights’ do so with a clear conscience, indeed, with a sense of their own righteousness?” If ever we feel weary of the fight or baffled by the acceptance of this clearly brutal and barbarous evil, we should remember the example of the abolition of slavery. Slavery was abolished throughout the west because the conscience and heart of Western people were slowly, through the course of centuries, purified by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If abortion is to be abolished, it will be through the same purification. So let us not grow weary. Through perseverance in the fight, we will change hearts and minds, and abortion will be not just made illegal but will be repudiated by us all, as slavery has come to be, as a national disgrace and a grievous sin. Dear Friends in Christ,

Perhaps the most-admired American in all our history is George Washington. His leadership and character helped

forge our own national character and image of leadership. For instance, after the Treaty of Paris was signed and the

Revolutionary War ended, Washington resigned as Commander-in-Chief, which helped to establish civilian control of

the military in our young country. Then, after two terms as president, Washington declined to run for a third term,

which helped establish the two-term limit for presidents and the tradition of the peaceful handing over of power.

Washington was well-loved and admired by the people and politicians alike, and he was considered a man of the

highest moral character. And yet, as is often pointed out today, George Washington was a slave owner.

We who live more than 15o years after the abolition of slavery in our country rightly feel a sense of revulsion and

horror at the thought of race-based, generational chattel slavery. This should be especially true for Christians, who

believe that the dignity of each human person comes from being created in the image and likeness of God and that

Jesus Christ died for the salvation of all, no matter their racial or ethnic background. For those who confess Jesus

Christ as Lord, each human life is sacred. But this Christian understanding of the inherent evils of slavery raises an

important question: if Washington and our Founding Fathers were truly such extraordinary and exceptional men,

how could they not see the evils of slavery?

The search for the answer takes us deep into the mystery of evil and the fallen human heart. Because of our fallen

nature and Original Sin, we have inherited concupiscence, a destructive desire and tendency to sin. We also live in a

state of alienation from God, from one another, and from our own true selves. Our intellect has been darkened and

our ability to know and respond to grace is diminished. The result is this: we cannot always perfectly and

completely know our sins. When considering Washington and the other Founding Fathers as slave holders, we

should remember that until very recently slavery was more the norm than the exception in human societies, and

that it was their work to establish a nation based on the principles of governance by, of, and for the people that

helped bring about the abolition of slavery in the West. Washington himself began to seriously question the

institution of slavery, and in his will stipulated that some of his slaves be freed. All of this is to say that it can be very

difficult to recognize and turn away from social sin, and that great social changes like the abolition of slavery take

place slowly, as the moral character of a people is more perfectly conformed to Christ.

So, why do I mention all of this today? This coming Saturday, January 22nd, is the anniversary of Roe v Wade, the

Supreme Court decision which required all states to legalize abortion on demand in the US. The Church remembers

this day each year as the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. The Church in the United States

has been working for many years to bring an end to abortion on demand, and at times we may ask, “How long, O

Lord, how long shall my enemy be exalted over me?” Or, given the obvious brutality and violence of abortion, we

may ask ourselves, “How do those who support abortion under the banner of ‘reproductive rights’ do so with a clear

conscience, indeed, with a sense of their own righteousness?” If ever we feel weary of the fight or baffled by the

acceptance of this clearly brutal and barbarous evil, we should remember the example of the abolition of slavery.

Slavery was abolished throughout the west because the conscience and heart of Western people were slowly,

through the course of centuries, purified by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If abortion is to be abolished, it will be

through the same purification. So let us not grow weary. Through perseverance in the fight, we will change hearts

and minds, and abortion will be not just made illegal but will be repudiated by us all, as slavery has come to be, as a

national disgrace and a grievous sin.

podemos conocer perfecta y completamente nuestros pecados.

ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Jesús conocemos a Dios.Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

llamaran ‘Mi Preferida’ y a tu tierra ‘Desposada’.

Poco a poco

CHÚA NHẬT TUẦN I MV

Lc 21,25-28.34-36

Mời bạn: Cuộc sống trần thế luôn lôi cuốn con người “chè chén say sưa, lo lắng sự đời” hay tìm sự an nhàn, hưởng thụ.

Amen.
