First leftmost door is a large double folding door

There is a double door in the middle of the tram with three windows on either side of it.

First left most door is a single folding door

There are three doors (no centre door) with 2 windows between each door.

A bit similar to the Z class trams. It is a bit shorter and the front is broader (less pointy).Note that the windows are more square in shape.

If you are learning the differences between the different types of trams currently operating in Melbourne, then use this guide to help you identify the characteristics of each tram and how to tell them apart.

High floor, double section tram


Side destination board is at the rightmost window (non open able) on the leftmost section.

Double section tram with a flat white metal turntable articulator in the middle.

Very similar to an A Class tram, however it is longer and in two sections. The windows onan A and B Class are different in the way they can open. The doors on a B class are widerthan an A class. The fronts are the same.

Doors are plug type doors. Windows on the doors goes down close to the bottom of the door.

Smooth and rounded front. Pointed out towards the bottom.

C1 Class Tram in PTV livery

Low floor, 3 section articulated tram


Middle section has no wheels. It has 2 double doors. There are 2 large windows between the 2 doors.

Like the C1 trams, the doors are plug type doors. However, the windows on the doors do not go as low down towards the bottom.

Front is less smooth than C1 trams. It is more complex and stylish. Destination area angles downwards. There is a curved grey bumper strip that sticks out lower down.

D1 Class Tram in PTV livery



Has articulated joint sections. Has an indentation towards the top.

Centre section has no wheels. Has 2 double doors. There is 1 large window between the 2 doors and a small window on either side.

Doors are the same type of the D1 trams.

However there are 3 double doors in total instead of 2.

Front is the same shape as the D1 class trams.

D2 Class Tram in PTV livery



Double doors are located on sections with no bogies. One section is shorter and has 1 door while the other is longer and has 2 doors.

Has articulated jointed sections

Routes: 5, 6, 16, 58 & 72

Very similar to the D1 trams, but they are longer and contain 5 sections insteadof 5. They have 3 sets of bogies in total. The double doors are located on thebogieless sections. Note that the 2 bogieless sections are of different lengths.

Has smooth curved external walls.

Front is smooth and round.Driver side window is long and round.

C2 Class Tram in PTV livery

High floor, 5 section articulated tram


Has 1 single door on the very left and 4 double doors.

Has a cartoon bumblebee sticker at each end of the tram.

Round and angled front. Shiny and has lots of black. The lights are along the sides. The indicator lights on the E1 and E2 a slightly different.

Has only double doors. 2 on the first & last section and 1 on the middle section.

Straight flat external walls with a lot of black.

These trams are different from other low floor trams as they have a round,curve/bulging body. Melbourne has 5 of these trams. They are known as thebumble bee tram.

The E Class Trams are the newest trams in Melbourne. They are locally built downat Bombardier in Dandenong.There are two variants, the E1 and E2. They have minor differences in appearance.

Lights on the E1’s spread out from the top towards the bottom.

Lights on the E2’’s are a thin stip. The E2’s front are also broader.

They have a mechanical scroll destination board instead of an electronic LED/flip disc ones.

Single section wooden tram


Wooden sliding single doors Can be found in two different colour schemes: green & gold and City Circle burgundy.

Routes: Route 35 (City Circle)

Melbourne’s oldest trams. They only operate on the City Circle route with some Wclasses being refurbished. These trams are wooden and shorter than other trams onthe network. Probably the most noticeable and commonly known trams in Melbourne.
