• Nearly 50 percent of Americans participate each year

• 82 percent said that they plan to spend more time

participating in outdoor activities next year

• Participants said they were much more likely to participate

in multiple outdoor activities than they were likely to do only

one activity

Key Findings

• 62 percent of 6-12 year olds participated in some form of

outdoor recreation in 2009

• Three-quarters of children ages 6 to 12 are influenced to

participate in outdoor activities by their parents.

• As they age, friends and peers gain an increasingly

influential role.

• 50 percent of Hispanic youth and 39 percent of African

American youth participated in outdoor activities.
