STUDY & THINKING SKILLS
1. Blending – forming new words through the fusion or merging of 2 independent words.
-the words merged need to drop some of their letters.Ex: breakfast and lunch = brunch kim and gerald = kimerald
cena and nation = cenation
Types of Word Formation
-combining 2 words which are usually independent from each other, noun and noun, or noun and its description.-you don’t drop a single letter, rather combine the two.
2. Compounding
Phases:separate: candy bar, marriage license, post office
Hyphenated: father-in-law, ad-lib, hanky-panky, in-depth
One word: notebook, afternoon, underground
- Attaching a prefix or a suffix to a root.
Ex: ad/a cur (care for) -ate = accurate ad voc (call) -ate = advocate
3. Derivation
is a list of words that you will encounter in books. Knowing these words will help you in your reading of the college textbooks.

Is pairing up of words by their relationships.
This does not only help in remembering words, but also aids in acquiring higher level thinking skills as you practice going deeper into the words.
Antonyms Ex: beautiful – ugly reject: accept, aggregate: part, deny: confirm

Ex: aid:help, enormous:gigantic, decline:sink, infer:conclude
