Engineering Careers in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Magnet Technology, Oxford siemens-healthineers.co.uk/mt Welcome Siemens Healthineers Magnet Technology is a world leader in the design and manufacture of superconducting magnets for MRI scanners and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Throughout our history we have focused on technological and manufacturing excellence. Our PLM team are responsible for all of our global magnet product innovation. From concept stage through to product delivery, we aim to continually push technological boundaries. Why? Because it is our mission to make MRI systems more widely accessible across the world. Join our PLM team and help us make MRI systems accessible to everyone! “The diagnostic capability of MRI is advancing at an incredible rate. This is now equipping us with vital new understanding and strategies in the fight against many debilitating conditions faced globally. However, currently 90% of the world’s population do not have access to MRI. At Magnet Technology we work together as a global team to optimise the super- conducting magnet, which sits at the heart of the MRI system. Our common goal and motivation is to enable the next billion people to have access to this game- changing technology.” Mark Le Feuvre – Head of PLM R&D “To reduce the cost of our superconducting magnets and to increase performance, we are using new materials including composites. MRI magnets experience very large forces and operate at around -269 degrees Celsius, just 4 degrees from absolute zero. At the same time, the structures need to have very good dimensional accuracy and repeatability. This is one of the most challenging problems for a structural engineer. Low mass, low cost and robustness of the new structures are essential to ensure our success as one of the leading MRI scanner manufacturers in the world.” Simon Calvert – Head of PLM Product Innovation

What is the size and makeup of the team?

“At Magnet Technology, there is a lot of focus on solving some of the technical challenges resulting from the build, transport and in-service issues encountered in the magnet design. Whilst working in the aerospace industry, I have worked in transnational teams and acquired extensive knowledge in the area of modelling/simulation, manufacturing, physical testing and the validation of composite structures. These transferable skills will help me to design a lightweight, low-cost, high-performance product with a pragmatic approach at Magnet Technology.”

Abhishek Dixit – Principal Engineer

We are a large multidisciplinary department with colleagues located in China and a systems team in Germany. Our teams are made up of engineers and physicists at all stages in their careers from Interns, Graduates, Postgraduates, Doctorates through to highly experienced Magnet Engineers who have worked for us for 40 years.

The challenge of designing superconducting magnets means that we require a broad range of skills including:

• Software Engineers

• Finite Element Analysis / Stress Engineers

• Magnet Engineers

• Composites Development Engineers

• Mechanical Engineers

• Physicists

• Cryogenics Engineers

• Systems Engineers

In 2018 we began a global initiative to embrace and implement Agile Development practices for hardware and software through the adoption of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). We believe that by improving collaboration and transparency of work and by enabling more team autonomy and empowerment, we will be become more flexible and effective in delivering the right products at the right time to meet our customer’s needs.

“Don’t be intimidated by the product if it’s not what you’re used to, join an organisation which is striving for success and creating a better future through direction and support of its employees. Coming from alternative sectors allows people to apply different views and approaches to the current challenges”.

Richard Hinds – Engineer

“I have learnt a vast amount since starting at Siemens Healthineers and the exposure to a wide range of design work has really helped this, not to mention the knowledge that my colleagues have! Siemens Healthineers are always providing opportunities to continue my development and I am currently working towards becoming a chartered engineer.”

Emily McLoughlin – Engineering Designer

Do I need to have previous experience working within MRI or Superconducting Magnet industry?

What career progression is there in PLM?

Absolutely not!

We recognise the benefits of employing people from different industrial sectors. Many of the skills we are looking for are highly transferable from other fields. Ultimately, we are seeking people who can tackle multifaceted complex engineering problems, both from a technical and a commercial viewpoint. People who are creative and innovative, able to realise solutions that are pragmatic and actionable as our real manufactured product is only an arm’s length away! Of course, you will get great support and coaching along the way, which is one of the great benefits of our open cross functional development culture.

We have a well-developed technical career structure, and through regular promotion reviews, you can progress to a Principal Engineer role. Beyond this we have a Key Expert Programme which allows technical experts to progress several more steps in their careers. We also have opportunities to move into project management or line management roles.
