won State Champion the 15 year old girls event in the NSW State Titles in

muddy and wet conditions She came second in the the A open ladies class

Snake Alert The Red belly black snake is common locally but is

quick to retreat when encountered It is venomous but fa-talities are rare It is often seen around backyard ponds creeks dams and rivers and preys on fish frogs birds reptiles and rodents

The Eastern brown snake is venomous and dangerous and will defend itself if it feels threatened With efficient first-aid treatment and antivenom there are now usually only one or two deaths per year It prefers dry areas and feed on rats mice birds and other snakes and will enter sheds and barns

Do not attempt to kill snakes as this is when people get bitten All native snakes are protected in NSW and it is ille-gal to harm them Leave it alone and watch where it goes Keep the dog and cat contained

Tips to help keep snakes from your yardDonrsquot stack wood near the houseKeep the grass shortKeep animal water dishes inside or in a cleared area

and donrsquot leave uneaten food in dishesAlways wear garden gloves whilst gardening and long

pants in long grassIf you keep birds clean up seed and fruit to stop ro-

dents from visitingIf you have a pond you may get a visit from a snake

just watch where it goes do not get in its wayIf you should encounter a snake just stop and stand

stillBoxes should be off the ground in sheds as they make

nice homes for snakesrsquo favorite food rodentsSnakes may not have ears but they pick up vibrations

so stomp those feet if you are going into a shed or barnKids may come across snakes when riding their push

bike along tracks they need to wear enclosed shoes and long pants as the snake wonrsquot pick up vibrations from the rubber tyres

If you are bitten by a snake you do not need to kill it for identification as the hospital has a kit that can do it

Do not use thin nylon netting on gardens as snakes can get tangled in the nylon which cuts into their skin

If you feel threatened by a snake in your house or your dog or cat have injured a snake or lizards you can contact the NSW Fire Brigade Regentville is the nearest 4733 6851 or phone 000 The Fire Brigade are now trained to respond to all wildlife incidents and will be able to attend very quickly WIRES the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service can also be contacted on 4754 2946

Local Bushcare A lsquoWork for the Dolersquo team are op-

erating the weeding program on the riverbank at River Road Emu Plains twice a week They commenced in August at the north end of River Road and have been rapidly controlling the Balloon vine and Madeira vine New

plants have been selected to not affect views from the roadside They will help to stabilise the riverbank and also im-prove the appearance along the path

International Friendships

One of the great things Rotary does is the Youth Exchange program

Young people aged between 16 and 18 ndash still at school ndash come to Australia for a year and young Australians are sent out to se-lected countries Rotary clubs in the host countries pro-vide some pocket money and hosting for the students

We have a young lady from Brazil staying with our club this year Bea will stay with several host fami-lies from Lower

Blue Rotary and attends the High School at Blaxland Exchange stu-dents get student visas so attending school is mandatory

through organized events A three week safari takes a group of students around Australia into the outback north to Queensland south to Can-berra etc which is the highlight of their year At the end of their stay students will have made everlasting friendships with students from all over the world ndash and such friendships help ensure in-ternational peace Many also form long lasting friendships with host parents

Living in a strange country for 12 months isnrsquot all partying A great deal is learned about the culture of the host country and being far away from home for such a long time can be daunting for some The internet has made a huge difference and easy communica-tion with the family at home helps set-tling into the host country

All exchange students give a pres-entation at their Rotary Club about their home country at the beginning of their stay and at the end of their stay

a presentation about their time in Aus-tralia They may go on outings with club members or other exchange stu-dent host parents and will take part in many Rotary club activities

Local Mechanicrsquos 15th Birthday Bash Local mechanic and race car enthu-

siast Greg Ormerod has been serv-icing motor vehicles in Emu Plains for 15 years and celebrated with a barbecue at his Bromley Road work-shop on Saturday 1 August

The first day of August is tradition-ally regarded as the horsersquos birthday but Gregrsquos invitation was open to horses of a different sort - those with horsepower Greg invited fellow car en-thusiasts including friends acquaintances and customers to show off their prized posses-sions and get together for a rsquochinwagrsquo

The weather was perfect and there was a good turn out with 19 cars in-cluding street machines race cars and vintage cars and one speed boat

turned up with two of his vintage cars a 1946 model Ford Super- Deluxe se-dan and a 1931 Ford Model A sedan

There was plenty of fun to be had with Greg running a free raffle every

hour with some great prizes including a pushbike as the major prize donated by Scotts Spare Parts of Penrith

Gregrsquos a family man and his par-ents took charge of the barbecue mak-ing sure no one went hungry

Gregrsquos wife Lis and their three chil-

dren Nicole Renae and Glenn were there to lend a hand too Greg and Lis belong to a foster parents group and are caring for a one year old boy

Gregrsquos a keen race car enthusiast and competes in circuit and hill climb events with his 1972 Capri and 1973 Maz-da whenever he can Hersquos a member of the Australian Racing Driversrsquo Club and the Bathurst Light Car Club His love of motor racing is shared by his 17 year old daughter Nicole who has been racing alongside her dad in club events since she was 12
