Growing vegies is the best way for children to learn about growing food With this in mind the Rotary club of Lower Blue Mountains approached Tony Best (pictured left) Principal of Emu Plains Public School to discuss the best way of installing a vegeta-ble garden at the school The Rotary club will help fund and set up the fully fenced vegie patch with the aim of en-couraging the children at the school to learn more about growing food

This venture will involve Lower Blue Rotarians Emu Plains Public School staff students and hopefully the PampC (Parents and Citizens) The Rotary club will provide funding infor-mation and manpower to help create and maintain the garden

The garden will be situated close to water access and storage for the gar-dening equipment A water tank may be installed later as part of the project

ldquoEmu Plains Public School has an environment committee consisting of staff and children who take their roles

very seriouslyrdquo said Tony Best ldquoand so I be-lieve the garden project is sustainablerdquo

Mr Best is very en-thusiastic about com-munity involvement ldquoEmu Plains Public School is a hub in the local communityrdquo he said

Mulched garden beds and protection from possums will help to ensure a good crop of assorted organic ve-gies is grown Salad vegetables will be used in the school canteen Successful crops of other vegies may be sold to help maintain the garden

Penrith City Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said Council committed a fur-ther $35000 this year toward remov-

ing weeds and replanting native vegetation as part of its popu-lar River Road Riparian Plan of Management

ldquoCouncil is steadily and pur-posefully restor-

ing the river view to its former gloryrdquo Councillor Aitken said ldquoThe historically well known panoramic views attracted famous 19th Century artists such as Streeton Conder Long Ashton and Fullwood to paint Council wants 21st

Rental Assistance for Domestic Violence

VictimsA new $16 million rental subsidy

initiative will help domestic violence victims into private accommodation The Safe Start Private Rental Sub-sidy Scheme which will be offered in Western Sydney will house around 1650 women with children in private rental accommodation over the next four years

ldquoAfter hearing from domestic vio-lence support workers about the need for more womenrsquos services I am very glad to be able to fund this new ini-tiative in the upcoming Budgetrdquo said Premier Rees ldquoThe NSW Government is committed to strengthening the sup-port and services it offers to domestic violence victimsrdquo

Minister for Women Verity Firth said Safe Start is about ensuring women with children who are escap-ing domestic violence get the support they need to secure and sustain a safe home ldquoDomestic violence victims can often spend lengthy periods in tempo-rary or crisis accommodation and in the worst cases are forced into home-lessnessrdquo Ms Firth said

ldquoSafe Start will help ensure that women and children are not forced are return to violent homes because they have no-where else to gordquo

Subsidised rents will be available to approved applicants for up to 12 months and they will only have to pay the same amount as other social hous-ing tenants ensuring their rent is rea-sonable Follow-up support including a six-month review will be provided to ensure tenants can make the transition from the subsidy at the end of the 12-month period

Poisoning Spike New figures from the NSW Poi-

sons Information Centre show it re-ceived more than 8000 calls regard-ing suspected paracetamol overdose last year half of them in children Unfortunately Nepean Hospital holds the dubious distinction of topping the list of calls to the Poisons Centre by hospital staff

The centre received more than 119000 calls from throughout Austral-ia last year almost 80000 from NSW 50 relating to accidental poisoning in

children ndash of these 15 were hospital-ised Of most concern is the amount of people particularly children who have ingested large doses of over-the-coun-ter medicines

ldquoMost accidental poisonings oc-cur in children younger than five with children aged between one and three most at risk in western Sydneyrdquo he said

out of sight and reach of children at least 15 metres off the ground and in a locked child-resistant container

bull Use medicines and chemicals safely by following given instructions and return them to safe storage imme-diately after use

Sad SearchAt the time of going to print it ap-

pears the search for an elderly man missing from Mt Riverview has ended sadly About 915am on Wednesday June 17 officers from the Blue Moun-tains Police Rescue Squad assisted by volunteers from the Rural Fire Service commenced a search of an area of bushland at Mount Riverview A short time later the body of a man was found in a creek near Nicholas Parade The body has not been for-mally identified however police believe it to be that of an 88-year-old man suf-fering dementia who last seen in the vicinity of his home about 6pm on Sun-day June 14

The man had attended the Nepean Hospital about 4pm on Sunday with his wife who had fallen ill About 5pm he was seen by staff to enter a taxi from the casualty area of the hospital where his wife was admitted The driver of the taxi confirmed to police that he took the elderly man to Mt Riverview about 6pm and dropped him off about a block from his house He had not been seen or heard from since Police held grave concerns for his welfare due to his age and his medical condi-tion and freezing weather conditions

An extensive search operation had been conducted in the area and involved police from the Blue Moun-tains and Penrith Local Area Com-mands PolAir and Rural Fire Service volunteers

4 Maintaining your compost It is important to add air to the com-

post so it doesnrsquot smell This can be done by regularly turning it with a gar-den fork or by placing garden stakes or pipes through the heap to allow air in

Common Compost Problems Composting is like baking a cake

ndash sometimes the recipe doesnrsquot work or the cake wonrsquot rise

However composting is a natu-ral process so it doesnrsquot take much to work out the problem and to fix it Some common problems and solu-tions are listed below

bull Smelly Compost Your compost will start to smell if it gets too wet or if there is not enough air in the heap Fix It Add dry leaves or garden mulch and turn the compost to get more air

through the heap Garden lime dolo-mite or woodfire ash will also help to eliminate the smell Ensure there are sticks to create a lsquofloorrsquo to ensure good drainage

bull Slow maturing compost Your compost doesnrsquot break down quick enough to keep up with your needs Fix It Adding nitrogen-rich material such as kitchen organics and green garden organics can speed up the composting process Turn the heap often and make sure your compost is moist

bull unwelcome Visitors Ants cock-roaches mice or rats can sometimes find there way into your compost and make it their home Fix It Always en-sure the food heap is covered with a layer of green organics ndash then cover the heap with hessian Turning the heap regularly discourages the ants and cockroaches and placing fine wire under the compost bin will help keep out mice and rats

HINT Avoid placing meat or dairy products in your compost

HINT Adding some soil into your compost heap will introduce the micro-organisms that break down food waste and help minimize odours
