Welcome to Peoria Area Veterinary Cancer Clinic (PaVCC)At PaVCC (part of the Peioria Area Veterinary Group), we are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to pets and their families in a caring and healing environment. Our mission is to empower pet families by providing knowledge and education on the behavior, diagnosis and treatment of cancers. Through compassion and service, we help families make the best decision for their pet with cancer while striving to achieve the longest, high quality life possible.

What/Who is PaVCC?PaVCC includes a group of highly specialized, trained consulting veterinarians in the field of medical oncology who are able to recom-mend and provide the best treatment options available for pets in need of cancer therapy, close to home. At PaVCC, we understand that your pet is an important member of the family. Our focus is on creating an empathetic environment where clients and patients feel safe and comfortable making decisions about the care they receive. Our entire staff is dedicated to providing the utmost care and attention to the needs of our patients and clients.

Why Should You See An Oncologist?A veterinary oncologist is a veterinarian that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in pets. She or he has specific knowledge, expertise, and equipment that will aid in maximizing the quality and quantity of your pet’s life. The specialists at PaVCC have

Top Quality Cancer Care:• Education regarding your pet’s diagnosis and a range of options

available• Access to the newest cancer drugs and treatment protocols• Expertise and safety in handling, preparing and administering

chemotherapy drugs• Updated information on clinical trials available in the area• Tailored treatment strategies specific to your pet’s situation• Guidance in quality of life monitoring and comfort care (hospice care)

Do I Need a Referral from My Veterinarian?PaVCC does not require a direct referral from your veterinarian, although we encourage you to involve your primary care veterinarian in your referral decision as they are an important part of your pet’s care team. At PaVCC we always keep your veterinarian up to date on diagnostic results, treatment plans, and how your pet is doing.

What is a Consultation and What Happens at My First Visit?Your first visit is an important one. Your oncologist will:

• Review pet medical records from your veterinarian.• Examine your pet.• Discuss the biological behavior of your pet’s disease with you.• Discuss the purpose of any further recommended testing.• Provide clear education about your pet’s problem and appropri-

ate treatment options including surgery, medical therapy, and radiation therapy.

• Personalize a plan based on your pet’s overall health as well as your family’s goals and wishes.

Our hope is that you leave your consultation with the information necessary to make an informed decision about your pet’s care. Your initial visit will last a minimum of one hour; however, more time may be necessary if you decided to move forward with recommended diagnostic tests or treatment. Rest assured that these will only be performed after a detailed discussion of your options and estimated costs.

undergone an additional 3+ years of training in cancer medicine in addition to attaining their DVM degree. They have demonstrated their knowledge and qualification in the field of cancer medicine by passing a challenging examination and publishing research that has contribut-ed to the knowledge of cancer in pets. You can identify someone who is board-certified in veterinary oncology by the letters DACVIM (Oncology) after his or her name. If your pet has been diagnosed with a type of cancer or your primary care veterinarian is highly suspicious of cancer, it is always a good idea to consult with a veterinary oncologist. Early consultation with a pet cancer specialist will often save you money in the long run and increase your chances of a good treatment outcome. At PaVCC, we will help you:

• Understand the big picture about your pet’s diagnosis• Avoid unnecessary or repeated diagnostic tests• Prioritize diagnostic and treatment options so you can use

financial resources wisely• Teach you about your pet’s prognosis so you can set realistic goals• Develop an appropriate treatment plan and coordinate efforts

of your primary care veterinarian and other specialists such as surgeons and/or radiation oncologists.

• Find clinical trials, if available.

Consulting a veterinary oncologist does not mean you are committing yourself to treating your pet with cancer. At PaVCC, we are skilled at listening to your goals in order to help you make the best decision for your particular situation. If treatment is desired, we will help assure that chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, and/or immunotherapy are utilized in the safest and most beneficial way to help your pet. If specific treatment is not desired, we will help you to keep your pet comfortable and prepare for the future.
