Clear and accurate communication between parents and faculty members is critical to the welfare of our students. Parents requesting return phone calls and emails have the right to expect school personnel to contact them within a reasonable time frame regard-ing concerns or questions. Please understand that teachers, counselors, and adminis-trators are committed to providing parents with timely feedback, but consideration should be given to everyone’s schedule and responsibilities. With that in mind, I am asking parents to allow up to 48 hours for school personnel to respond to emails and

phone calls. If you have an emergency that requires immediate attention, please contact your child’s assistant principal. David F. Piperato Principal

American Red Cross Club of EHS Is Sponsoring a Summer Book Drive

The American Red Cross Club of Emmaus High School will sponsor a Summer Reading Book Drive. The club members will place collection boxes in the English classrooms and encourage students to donate their summer reading books during the month of October. The students will receive one voucher per book. (Many teachers are holding the vouchers for their students until the spring.) The vouchers may be exchanged in the spring for the required books on the next year’s reading list. Last year the students collected and distributed over 1,200 books. Please encourage your child to turn in summer books and participate in this project! If there are any questions, contact Mrs. Sherwood, Club Advisor, in Room 567 at the high school.

Math Contest Club

During the month of September, all teachers in the math department have sign-up forms for the Pennsylvania Math Contest Club. All club members will be taking part in our two major contests – the Pennsylvania Math League and the American Math Competition (AMC). The Pennsylvania Math League contests are six half-hour tests given during the school day once a month from October to March. The AMC is a 75 minute test given during school once a year in February. The content for both tests is primarily algebra and geometry, with occasional questions in probability, trigonometry, and sequences. All math contests require logic and reasoning beyond the usual math curriculum, so students who join PA Math League as freshmen and sophomores benefit greatly from several years of attempting problems and studying the solutions given after the contest. Students who achieve high scores in PA Math League will receive information about other competi-tions throughout the school year. Teams have competed in local university contests at Princeton, Bucknell, Muhlenberg, Millersville, and Lehigh University. Those who wish to participate in these contests are encouraged to practice after school on Tuesdays in Mrs. Hoffert’s classroom. We also have a Calculus League competition, which is administered in the Advanced Calculus course, but other students may participate.

Has your child been absent and missed a test or quiz?

If so, then this information is for you!

Mr. Kutz has been running the morning testing sessions here at EHS for several years. If your child is absent from school and misses a test or quiz, he/she can make arrangements with his/her teachers to have the test/quiz sent to Mr. Kutz for morning testing. Students will not lose class time if they make up their work during early morning testing. The testing areas are quiet, and the stu-dents are closely monitored.

AM Testing is held in Room 236 with Mr. Kutz from 6:30 am– 7:15 am on Monday through Friday.

There is no morning testing if there is a late start. Sessions are also cancelled the first day of school after Thanksgiving, during Winter Break, on Presidents’ Day, during Easter vacation, and on the day of the Senior Breakfast.

The East Penn School District (EPSD) has a central registration process for all students new to the district. Parents or guardians of children who are eligible for enrollment should call the Central Registrar at 484-519-3210. All registrations are by appointment only. The Office of the Central Registrar is located at Eyer Middle School. Parents may access the registration forms at the district web site (www.eastpennsd.org). If parents are not able to access the web, they may visit any school main office or call the above office to have registration packets mailed to them.

Central Registration Process in East Penn School District

Home Access Center (HAC) applications are now being processed by the Main Offices at each school in the district. Parents/guardians of students attending EHS may stop by their school’s Main Office to complete an application and verify their identification. Your student will receive notice of your login and password in a sealed envelope in his/her homeroom. Note: In order to access HAC, a user needs a working computer, Internet access and a web browser. If you lose or misplace your sign-in and password information, you may stop by the main office to com-plete a new application. The information will be printed out and sent home in a sealed envelope with your son/daughter. Phone requests for this information will not be processed because photo identifica-tion must be verified.

Key Club News

As the school year begins, Emmaus High School’s Key Club is preparing for another great year. Key Club is one of the biggest and most well known community service clubs. It works with Kiwanis and other organizations such as Cops N Kids and Special Olympics. As a non-profit organization, it encourages and motivates high school students to join hands and help make a difference in the Emmaus Community, and internationally. EHS Key Club is the high school version of Emmaus Kiwanis Club, but they both share the mission to serve others, build character, and develop leadership skills. Throughout the past few years, Key Club has helped organizations such as Cops N Kids, The Ronald McDonald House, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and many more. Members have participated in many events, such as the Special Olympics, ones hosted by the Iron Pigs, and the Celebration of Reading. The club also serves the Emmaus Community by supporting with Kiwanis events, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Pancake Breakfast. In addition, club members clean up after EHS football games and collect books for underprivileged kids. Key Club will meet most Thursdays in the Cafeteria at 2:45. However, for the first few meetings, we will meet in the Main Gym. This year, unlike past years, students need to answer a few questions about which committee they’d like to be a part of. These interviews will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the first few weeks. For questions, any Key Club officer and our advisors, Mrs. Teles-Carl and Mrs. Wells, are available for help in Room 365. We look forward to another fantastic year!

This is a reminder to parents with a child or children attending school in the East Penn School Dis-trict that we do not carry medical insurance on students, but do provide parents with the opportunity to select a primary excess group insurance plan for students. Student accident insurance can help you eliminate the possibility of out-of-pocket expenses, since many group insurance policies no longer pay full hospital and medical expenses and may require a deductible or co-insurance. There are two plans available for your consideration:

Plan #1 School Time Coverage – Costs $30 per student – This will cover injury occurring while the student is traveling to and from school, while attending school sponsored activities such as plays, assemblies, class trips, interscholastic sports other than Sr. high football, intramural sports, gym and physical education classes, etc.

Plan #2 24 Hour Coverage – Costs $116 per student – This will cover all of the above, plus accidents occurring away from school, in the evenings and on weekends, vacations, etc. Please note that the plans should be considered in conjunction with any other family medical insurance you may have. If you have any questions, please call an insurance broker at American Management Advisors at (215) 946-8888 between 8:00a.m. and 4:30 p.m. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH!! Completed applications should be returned by mail with a check or money order for the correct premium, directly to:

American Management Advisors, Inc. P.O. Box 366

Langhorne, PA 19047-0366 DO NOT RETURN THE APPLICATION & PAYMENT TO YOUR STUDENT’S SCHOOL. This insurance can be purchased anytime during the 2012-2013 school year. Parents enrolling more than one child must fill out an application for each child, write a separate check or obtain a money order for each child/student being enrolled and mail in separate envelopes to the address above. Your cancelled check or money order receipt is your proof of payment.

Emmaus High School Parent Volunteer Organization

STEP is a volunteer group of parents in East Penn that sponsors activities to encourage our youth to have fun without the use of drugs or alcohol. Members of STEP include parents, teachers, administrators and citizens of East Penn School District.

STEP Activities

Our group of volunteers teams with the EHS Student Govern-ment Association, freshmen orientation, September tailgate party, homecoming dance, snowball dance, and the EHS Final Fling. These events provide a wonderful opportunity for parent volunteers to participate at school wide events.

STEP Sponsored Event of the Year

SENIOR AFTERBALL PARTY: Saturday, April 28, 2012

This event is an all night theme party open to all seniors at EHS. We plan this event to offer an al-ternative to individual after prom parties. Last year’s event had 600 + students attend with an-other ACCIDENT FREE PROM SEASON. It includes food, a casino, game shows, carnival games, a full size miniature golf course, a DJ, massages, air brush tattoos, and huge prizes. One lucky senior won a CAR last year! This event is funded strictly by donations and run entirely by volunteers. Over 250 volunteers made this event a huge success!

Volunteers are urgently needed, especially underclassmen parents!

We need your help on several committees; co-chair positions are available. NEXT meeting: OCTOBER 17, 2011

STEP meetings are scheduled on the 3rd Monday of most months during the school year. Meetings start at 6:30 pm in room 353 at EHS and last only ONE hour! Attendance is voluntary. To join STEP, please complete a membership form, which can be found at www.eastpennsd.org/ehs/ . Select “programs,” and the STEP link can be found in the left column. The membership form can be printed from there. Once complete, please send in or drop off in the EHS Main Office.

**Please note that all communication is distributed by group email **

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact: STEP President Cherie Burke ([email protected])

Emmaus High School teacher Scott Didra received the 2012 Philadelphia University Centennial

Medal of honor at their convocation ceremony on August 16. The university sent letters out to ap-

proximately 800 incoming freshmen to write a letter to nominate a teacher that had a positive impact

on their lives. A committee from the university then got together and selected four teachers to re-

ceive the Centennial Educator award. Philadelphia University president Dr. Stephen Spinelli re-

marked that Mr. Didra was nominated by not one, but four students for this honor. He said it was the

first time in the history of the school that this happened. Students Haley Peluso, Bailey Miller, Daniel

Wimble, and Cody Myers all agree that Mr. Didra is “no ordinary teacher.” They all felt he had a pos-

itive influence on their lives. At the convocation ceremony, all four students were on stage with Mr.

Didra as he received his award from the president. Haley Peluso spoke on behalf of all of the stu-

dents. She stated, “I honestly believe I would not be standing here today without having Mr. Didra as

a teacher. Scott Didra has shaped my future. Mr. Didra made the world of architecture real; he

brought us on field trips and gave us the opportunity to take part in the construction of a fully-

functioning playhouse for the school’s preschool program. The house was complete with electricity

and a handicapped accessible deck. He brought our class together as a family. For all of us it has

been hard to say goodbye to Mr. Didra as a teacher. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that

he will continue to be an inspiration to us throughout all of our lives". The students felt it was such a

great honor to have him as a teacher and that his future students are very lucky to have him.

Congratulations to Mr. Scott Didra
