Emmaus High School A message from Mr. Piperato Inside this issue: Volume 13, Issue 4 March 2014 Dear Parents and Guardians, The following is a headline you will probably never see in the local press… Emmaus High School is the highest performing high school in Lehigh County. You may never see it, but it is a fact. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has devised a school assessment system that assigns each school in the state of Pennsylvania a School Performance Profile score. The calculations are somewhat complicated, but the results are quite clear: we have the best high school students and faculty in all of Lehigh County. If you want more information on how we achieved a score of 92.6 or how the state calculates each school’s score, please refer to the Pennsylvania Department of Education website. You may be asking yourself, “what makes Emmaus High School different than all the rest?” I would suggest many factors. First, without a doubt, we have the finest students in the entire Lehigh Valley. I have been stating this fact to anyone who would listen for the past seven years, and now the numbers prove my point. We have you, their parents, to thank for sending us incredible young people every day and trusting us with their development and education. Our students are intelligent, thoughtful, reflective, and committed to excellence. They are compassionate, caring, empathetic, and incredibly charitable. Each day they demonstrate their love of learning and their love for each other, a rare thing to see on a daily basis in most high schools. In addition to wonderful students, we have an outstanding faculty and staff. Hard working, conscientious, and committed to excellence, the adults in this building take great pride in providing our students the support they need to be successful at this level and beyond. Of course, all schools have room for improvement, including EHS. But rarely do you find the single-minded focus on academic achievement that is ever present at Emmaus High School. As we shovel out and pray for the warmth of Spring, please be confident that your children are in good hands while attending Emmaus High School. We will continue to strive for excellence, support and encourage students, challenge them to be their best, and celebrate their many accomplishments. That is the Emmaus way. As you read through the many pages of this and every newsletter, remember how fortunate we are to be associated with an outstanding high school. I am grateful every day for the students who enter our doors and the faculty and staff who greet them with a smile. As we peak our heads out from the dark days of winter, be encouraged by our students’ bright futures. Sincerely, David F. Clear and accurate communication between parents and faculty members is critical to the welfare of our students. Parents requesting return phone calls and emails have the right to expect school personnel to contact them within a reasonable time frame regarding concerns or questions. Please understand that teachers, counselors, and administrators are committed to providing parents with timely feedback, but consideration should be given to everyone’s schedule and responsibilities. With that in mind, I am asking parents to allow up to 48 hours for school personnel to respond to emails and phone calls. If you have an emergency that requires immediate attention, please contact your child’s assistant

principal. As always, thank you for your ongoing support. David F. Piperato Principal

The Emmaus High School Art Department submitted 48 students’ works plus one portfolio in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Competition. The awards ceremony took place at Symphony Hall on February 2, 2014. The art teachers, Mrs. Maley, Mrs. Caruso, Mrs. Oster, Mrs. Coleman and their students received awards. The art students were winners in the portfolio, gold key, silver key and honorable mention categories. All of the gold key winners are off to the national competition. If a student wins at the national level we will report results in May of 2014. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a prestigious competition with many entries at both the regional and national level. The art teachers of Emmaus High School are exceptionally proud of each student who submitted work to this competition and congratulate all winners who saw their work on display at the Allentown Art Museum and Baum School of Art during the first two weeks of February. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Two Emmaus High School teams won trophies on February 24th in a TSA TEAMS engineering competition at the Bucknell University location. TEAMS stands for Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science, and is a program of the Technology Student Association (TSA), a national organization. The theme for the contest this year was "Engineering Tomorrow's Cities - Improving Urban Infrastructure." Each student on the team researched specific urban engineering topics, and then collaborated during the contest to answer multiple choice questions and write essays applying math and science knowledge to solve typical engineering problems. The Grade 11-12 team won 1st prize, and the Grade 10 team won 3rd prize, in the Bucknell location for the competition. Further statewide rankings are pending. Mountains of Hope

Mountains of Hope is an organization that partners with schools and social service organizations to promote educational enrichment, global exchange, and sustainable community development for the children and people of Ecuador. The Mountains of Hope Club at EHS consists of a small group of Emmaus High School students who work throughout the year with Sue Brown, a former teacher of the gifted in the East Penn School District, in an effort to create a strong support system for the people living in the Pimampiro region of the northern Andes of Ecuador. This past month, the students of this club worked hard to sell twice as many carnations as previous years for the annual Valentine’s Day Carnation Sale. Despite multiple unanticipated snow days during the week dedicated to selling the carnations during lunch periods, the Mountains of Hope Club sold out and raised more than $300 to donate to the Mountains of Hope Organization in Ecuador. All club members are ex-tremely grateful to everyone who helped make their efforts such a success!

Emmaus High School Language Clubs’ Food Drive In an effort to help the EHS Angel Network fill their spring food baskets, the French, German, Latin, and Spanish Clubs will again sponsor a party for the language class that brings in the highest average of donated goods per student in the class. We encourage all French, German, Latin, and Spanish teachers and students to participate from March 17 – March 21.

To be collected: boxes of pasta, boxes of Mac & Cheese, canned fruit, granola bars and deodorant

(unisex, please)

In the fall, Mrs. Hess’s Spanish 2 students in her Period 2 class donated 260 items (an average of 13 per

student) and won themselves a breakfast party. In total, we were able to donate 1341 items to the EHS

Angel Network! Let’s beat that number this spring!

Key Club Though February was a cold, snowy month, that didn’t stop the EHS Key Club from volunteering. During the beginning of the New Year, Key Clubbers sorted books and colored valentines day cards for a local elderly home. During this month, we elected new officers for the 2014-2015 school year. Congratulations to Lindsay Ortwein, Morgyn Hagy, Kevyn McConlogue, Jake Baker, and Louis Berrigan. We would also like to congratulate Clint Spear on becoming the new Lieutenant Governor of our division. During February, Key clubbers helped out at the Cops N' Kids Reading Room in Bethlehem. Also, students volunteered to set up tables and run events at Winterfest . All the Key Clubbers loved this event, it included sled races and many more snow activities. February was a memorable month in this key club year ,as we say farewell to the old officers and accept the new with open arms.

Important Dates & Information for the 2014 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing Program

March 11, 2014 ~~~~~ AP Exams are ordered.

March 12 through April 11

If you need to cancel a test you have already ordered OR add a test you forgot to order, you will be charged an additional $25 to change your order. We are giving the students plenty of time to decide what exams to take. If a student is not sure about taking an exam, they should consult with their teacher. Any senior should contact the admission office of the college they are planning on attending to verify that the college awards AP credit. Please plan accordingly. No tests can be ordered after April 11th.

Tuesday, April 22 & Wednesday, April 23, 2014 The Pre-Administration Session will be held in the café period 9 Tuesday and

Wednesday and after school on Tuesday. Students attend only ONE session. At this time, the exam locations and times will be reviewed, in addition to security policies and procedures. Most importantly, all students taking an AP Exam will bubble in the

preliminary information on their answer sheets. This session will reduce the amount of time needed on test day, allowing students to focus more on the tests themselves.

Teachers do not have to release students from class. Any student who cannot attend MUST report to counseling within the next 3 school days to bubble in their answer sheets.

May 5 – May 15, 2014 ~~~~~ AP Examination Period

It is the student’s responsibility to check the time and location for each test. dates, times, and room assignments will be posted around the school building and given to all teachers prior to the testing period. They may vary from day to day. No one can be admitted after a test has begun, so please be prompt!! IF you are sick on the day of an exam, a parent or guardian MUST notify Mrs. Demchak or Mr. Wood in the Guidance Office at 610-965-1689. If you wish to take the exam during the make-up period, you are required to bring a doctor’s note. Otherwise, you will be subject to an additional $40 charge for the alternate exam, per College Board policy. Please note that College Board also arranges the make-up schedule; we cannot deviate from the established dates/times for regular exams or make-up exams.

ALL inquiries regarding the AP Exams should be directed to Mrs. Demchak or Mr. Wood in Counseling at 610-965-1660.

What is an Eating Disorder?

Eating disorders – such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder can include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. According to the American Psychiatric Association’s Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), these are the basic characteristics of some of the most common types of eating disorder: Anorexia Nervosa:

Restricting food intake to below the requirements for a particular individuals physical Requirements.

Intense fear of weight gain and obsession with weight and continual behaviors to prevent weight gain. Inability to recognize true body shape or recognize the seriousness of condition. May or may not use binge eating and/or purging behaviors.

Bulimia Nervosa:

Eating an unusually large amount of food at one time followed by compensatory behaviors (such as vomiting, taking laxatives and/or excessive exercise) to prevent weight gain. A feeling of being out of control during the binge-eating occurrence. Self-judgment largely based on weight and shape.

Binge Eating Disorder:

Recurrent situations of eating an unusually large amount of food at one time. A feeling of being out of control during the behavior. May have feelings of shame or guilt towards eating which can lead to eating alone. May eat until the individual is beyond full to the point of discomfort.

Note: There are several other types of feeding or eating disorders outlined in the DSM-5. Many people may not have every symptom of a disorder, but may still receive a feeding or eating disorder diagnosis. If you are concerned that your child may have an eating disorder, help is available. You can contact your child’s counselor or the Student Assistance Team for more information. East Penn Information Line: 610-966-8480

East Penn School District implemented the Emergency Call Out System (Edulink) to notify parents and staff of important information relating to East Penn School District and its students. In the event of inclement weather, parents will receive a phone call at approximately 5:30 AM, regarding the status of the school day. Parents may opt out of the Edulink System by removing the phone number in the Edulink field in HAC. If you do not have HAC, send a written note to your child’s school office. Please understand that removal from the systems means you will not receive calls about emergency situations. In the event of inclement weather, the decision to delay openings or close school will be made before 5:30 AM by Dr. Seidenberger, Superintendent of Schools. He will then activate the

Emergency Call Out System (Edulink), as well as the website, information line and WFMZ stations. For more information regarding when and how the decision is made, please refer to the district website www.eastpennsd.org. Select the tab “About Us,” and then “Parent Info” from the drop down menu. On that screen, you will then select “Weather Related Closings.”
