The Midlands and South Police Fleet Buying Group conducted its latest tender process in Q4 2015, with Volvo bidding successfully to provide V60, V70 & XC70 Police models. Volvo cars will be the lead vehicles for the new regional Emergency Operations (EMOP) collaboration, representing the combined services of Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.

Volvo’s new generation Drive-E diesel engines were particularly of interest, with the V60 D5 (233hp) FWD Geartronic, V70 D4 (220hp) AWD Geartronic and XC70 D5 AWD Geartronic models all making the cut.

The all-new XC90 will be Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Brake Test compliant by March 2016 – a mandatory requirement for all Emergency Services vehicles.

Once this has been achieved, the entire Volvo Emergency Services Range will be compliant with the MPS Brake Test.

The chart opposite lists all the Volvo models and engine variants that have now been MPS Brake tested.

The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Spec 6 test is a mandatory requirement for all Emergency Services vehicles to ensure that the vehicle’s additional electronic equipment does not interfere with other on-board electronics such as police radio, medical equipment, etc.

Following the testing of the all-new XC90 in March, representative model variants from the entire Volvo Emergency Services Range will be EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Spec 6 compliant.

The chart opposite lists all the Volvo models and engine variants that have now been EMC Spec 6 tested.

Volvo Special Vehicles are the only cars factory-built for the job: engineered through and through to meet the unique needs of the Emergency Services.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to announce that the Emergency specification Volvo XC90 is due to go into production in early summer of 2016.

The bestselling XC90 is Volvo’s new flagship SUV, and the safest and most technologically advanced car we have ever built. The Emergency Services variant has been tested extensively in Police driving conditions to make it suitable for operational use.

Full details will be available shortly.

In the meantime, please email Ian Reger, Special Vehicles Manager, at [email protected] or call 07889 428222 for further information.

To complement our existing Bluelight Installation packages, we have now introduced a new infrastructure package, allowing for vehicles to be pre-ordered and fitted ready to accommodate specific equipment prior to delivery. This allows for quick and easy installation of your own Bluelight equipment once the vehicle is delivered to your own workshop.

The new Volvo S90 executive saloon was unveiled to the world in January, equipped with an impressive array of new technologies, including cutting-edge safety features, seamless connectivity and a suite of cloud-based apps and services.

An advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist, gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car in lane at speeds up to 130 km/h, bringing full autonomous drive a step closer to reality.

In addition, we have added large animal detection functionality to the City Safety system on the new S90, enabling the car to automatically detect large animals such as elk, horses or moose, offering an intuitive warning and brake support to help avoid a collision.

The new S90 will be available with a range of Drive-E engine options, including the clean and powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. It also benefits from one of the most luxuriously appointed interiors and connected infotainment systems in the large sedan segment.

“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group. “We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”

The revolutionary T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid is now available in the all-new Volvo XC90 and the new S90 executive saloon. The T8 delivers an impressive 407hp* and 640Nm, travelling from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds or less, in return for just 49g/km CO2 and a frugal 2.1l/100 km fuel consumption.

As well as removing the need to compromise performance for gains in economy and emissions, the T8 leads the field in adaptability. Five different driving modes deliver a range of performance and efficiency-enhancing characteristics:

8

Hybrid: automatically alternates between petrol and electric to deliver the best overall fuel consumption.

Pure electric: the electric motor has a range of more than 40 kilometres.

Power: engaging the superior response and instant torque curve of electric at start-up, transitioning to combustion at speed.

AWD: constant all-wheel drive on demand.

Save: allows the driver to “freeze” the battery level and save it for later use with pure electric drive.

“We have been working hard to earn our competitive edge and to give our customers the ultimate combination of performance and low fuel consumption,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development, at Volvo Car Group. “Our Twin Engine technology has enabled us to build on our heritage of efficient powertrain development in a completely new way.”

* 320hp + 87hp and 400NM + 240Nm combined 407hp and 640Nm. All figures based on the NEDC driving cycle for hybrids.

Volvo was the first car maker to produce a diesel-based plug-in hybrid powertrain – the V60 D6. And now the new V60 D5 Twin Engine Special Edition will deliver a maximum driveline power output of approximately 230hp when the electric motor and diesel engine are working simultaneously.

In one of the automotive industry’s most comprehensive electrification strategies, Volvo Car has announced that plug-in hybrids will be introduced across the entire Volvo Car Range, and an entirely new range of electrified smaller cars will be developed, including the production of a fully electric car for sale by 2019.

“We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car. “We are confident that by 2020, 10 per cent of Volvo’s global sales will be electrified cars.”

Volvo Car believes that plug-in hybrid cars offer customers the best combination of efficiency, range and convenience, without compromising performance and driving dynamics.

“With around 40 years of experience in the field of electrification, Volvo Car has learned a lot about battery management along the way, delivering the best range per kilowatt hour in the industry. We have come to a point where the cost versus benefit calculation for electrification is now almost positive,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development, at Volvo Car Group.

The first new Volvo T5 Police model in four years is now available to order, featuring the new 4 cylinder 2.0-litre VEP high power petrol engine.

The V60 T5 Emergency Specification is MPS Brake Tested and EMC Spec 6 compliant, and comes with a new eight-speed Geartronic transmission.

The new model is available in two different power/torque outputs:

245hp/350Nm

253hp/400Nm

Demonstrator vehicles are available for evaluation.

The super-efficient Volvo VED D4 diesel engine, currently available for the Volvo V40, S60 & V60 models, is now available in an enhanced variant.

Current power/torque: 190hp/400Nm

Enhanced power/torque: 200hp/440Nm

The new, retuned D4 offers higher power output and torque, for situations where a greater response capability is required, while still generating just 102g/km of CO2.

There’s no doubt that autonomous driving is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality, nor that it will revolutionise road travel. But exactly how things will change is still very much a matter of debate. Volvo has been at the forefront of autonomous driving technology for many years, and we have already built a number of AD technologies into our cars to enhance safety and driver convenience. We are also leading the debate around social, cultural and behavioural change, too, and in 2017, Volvo will collaborate with the civic authorities in Gothenburg to conduct the biggest and most comprehensive real-world trial of autonomous driving technologies ever conducted.

The Drive Me project will put 100 self-driving cars on the streets of the city. They’ll gather real-life data around driver behaviours, traffic patterns and many other issues that arise when self-driving cars join the regular traffic on the streets of an average city.

We’re hoping to stimulate discussion between people, organisations and governments all over the world. It’s really easy to take part and help us shape the future of driving. Simply visit global.futureofdriving.com and take our questionnaire.
