Improving patient flow at Lakeland
Regional Medical Center
Lakeland Regional Medical Center
operates the largest single-site
volume ED in Florida. Facing a LOS
of over 5.5 hours, LWBS at 4% and
door-to-doctor times of over an hour
they initiated a comprehensive
process improvement initiative.
A key component to this initiative
was redesigning the patient flow in
the ED. LRMC changed to a pod
concept, treating critical care
patients in any pod to more evenly
distribute the high acuity patients. A
new Bed Traffic Control position was
created to improve the triage
process. Staffing changes were also
implemented for nurses and
physicians.
The results were impressive! By Q1
of FY2014, LRMC was seeing:
0.3% LWBS rate
81.8% of patients saw a doctor
in less than 30 minutes from
arrival
83.8% of ED patients admitted
or discharged within 3 hours of
arrival
187,000 annual ED visits

DiffERent initiative, click here.

Client Perspective
Quick Orders
“CPOE go-lives in our ED’s are a ‘non-
event’ thanks to [Quick Orders.]
Providers describe CPOE as being
easier, more efficient and safer than
on paper and would likely take your
arm off if you tried to take it away.”
Rolland Phillips, MD
Medical Director of Informatics
Carolinas Healthcare System
Infusion & Injection Calculator
“Since going live with these new
tools, we have seen a more than
30% increase per month in volume
of the CPT/CDMs relating to IV
injections and infusions!
Additionally, the ability to launch
directly into the chart to document
IV stop times from the tracking shell
and depart process makes it very
easy for the nursing staff to
complete.”

Functionality Spotlight
Facility Charging Module
We are very excited to introduce our new Facility Charging module. This solution is
designed to improve charging accuracy, while requiring less manual verification and
risk. Key components of documentation are automatically pulled into the Facility
Charging module and the visit level is generated as a by-product of clinical nursing
documentation. Infusion and injection charges can be automatically populated into
the Facility Charging module as well.*
This new Facility Charging module offers additional benefits including:
Combines an acuity-and-resource-based approach for consistent and compliant
visit level assignment
Generates visit level assignments as a by-product of documentation
Eliminates subjective assessments and ensures a more accurate capture of
visit levels
Provides an audit trail to allow you to demonstrate compliance with
government regulations in the event of an audit
Integration with the eMAR allows automatic calculations for infusion and
injection charges with the infusion and injection calculator

Functionality Spotlight
E/Point
E/Point offers you the ability to assign facility and professional ED visit level
charges. Integrated E/Point calculates the facility, injection and infusion, and
professional charges as a by-product of clinical documentation. We’ve recently
made some advancements to this solution as well and are eager to share those
with you:
Personal Filters
Historically, if you wanted to set up a unique filter, you would have to submit a
request to IT and wait for IT to build the filter. Our new Personal Filter, however,
allows you to configure additional filters on your own, as needed, from the Tracking
list. This is particularly efficient for the coding workflow, where a coder may need to
look back to different dates. IT departments will benefit from this as well as it will
help alleviate the pressure to continue to fulfill these requests.
Assigning yourself to multiple patients
In addition to building personal filters, coders can also assign themselves to
patients as part of the coding workflow using Integrated E/Point. Coders often need
to quickly assign themselves to multiple patients at one time. With Assign All on the
Coding Tracking list toolbar, coders can assign themselves to all patients who are
displayed on their Tracking list view. The patients who populate a coder’s Tracking
list view are managed through the selected filter on the Coding Tracking list.
Coders can also click Unassign All on the toolbar to unassign themselves from all
patients who are displayed on their Tracking
list view. From this window, coders have the
ability to assign another user to all patients
who are displayed on their Tracking list view.
They also have the ability to unassign
another user from all patients on their
Tracking list view.

Functionality Spotlight
Quick Orders Advancements
Quick Orders was developed to expedite the ordering process. With Quick Orders,
providers are able to enter 90% of the most commonly placed Emergency
Department orders from one screen. We have recently made some advancements
to this solution to further streamline the ordering process. Providers can now create
an alias name for orders, Care Sets, and PowerPlans which simplifies the name of
the order, so they no longer have to see all the order sentence details in the face-up
view. This also helps maximize the screen real estate. For additional information on
Quick Orders, click here.
Streamlined Discharge Process
We have been working to optimize our discharge process throughout Cerner and
have some new advancements to share with you that are designed to help
streamline the discharge process for physicians and nurses in the ED. Specific
advancements include:
The follow-up type can now be set to default to the most common selection
made in your Emergency Department to help minimize clicks
Follow-up instructions can also be saved as personal favorites to minimize
manual entry
Images, such as a hospital logo, can be added to the Discharge Summary to
make it more personalized and professional in appearance
The Save, OK, Print, and Options buttons and the Discharge and Transfer
action buttons are dithered out at a set interval after patient is discharged so
they aren’t able to be selected. This helps avoid populating information that
wasn’t reviewed with the patient

Client Feedback
KLAS Surveys
Satisfaction for Cerner Emergency
Medicine clients is very important to
us. KLAS is one of the many
mechanisms we utilize to measure
and monitor client satisfaction. KLAS
is an organization that publishes user
satisfaction data by reporting
accurate, honest and impartial
vendor performance so that
members in healthcare, your peers,
can make informed decisions.
We at Cerner hold KLAS in a very
high regard and look at their
published reports, study the
feedback and use that to enhance
Cerner solutions and improve
satisfaction. Your feedback directly
helps pave the way to improving
healthcare. If you are interested in
providing feedback to KLAS, please
visit www.klasresearch.com and
select the “Rate Your Vendor” button.
The survey will take just 5-10
minutes of your time.
Thank You!

Focus On: Patient Story and PowerInsight
Patient Story
As we’ve been talking with our clients, a common theme we have heard is that it
is difficult to see the overall picture of what took place during an ED visit and to
view the order in which key events took place. Additionally, it’s problematic to
have to go many places to get all of the information and manually assemble the
story.
We’ve listened to your feedback and are excited to share with you the work we
are doing on our Patient Story solution. The Patient Story is designed to be
accessible from the chart and to deliver one location that houses a chronological
listing of key documentation, orders, and events. It is also intended to be used to
obtain information in hand-off, research a patient complaint, identify bottlenecks
or workflow issues, and review the record for coding or billing purposes.
Patient Story is still in development but will be coming soon. Stay tuned for
additional information!
PowerInsight Advancements
To enhance the reporting capabilities
that are available to you, we are putting
our top ten Emergency Department
reports into PowerInsight. This will allow
you access to more filtering capabilities
and provides additional flexibility in how
the output is displayed and how you
manipulate the data.
The chronological view provides a listing
of key documentation, orders, and
events.
