The GreenpeaceDebit MasterCardThere are 1.5 billion credit and debit cards in use in theU.S. with most cards lasting three years or less, a stackof the discarded cards would reach more than 40 timesthe height of Mt. Everest in just a decade.

Worse still, almost all credit and debit cards are made ofPolyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. This commonplace plasticis one of the most toxic substances saturating our planet.Few consumers realize that PVC is the single mostenvironmentally damaging of all plastics.

Greenpeace has recently launched the first PVCalternative debit card in the U.S. The Greenpeace Debit

MasterCard is made of PETG plastic, a safer alternativeto PVC. Its one small step to show that solutions to ourplanet's problems do exist. In addition, every timecardholders make a purchase, Greenpeace receives apercentage of the card processing fees to support ourwork for a toxic-free future.

    Bluefin Ban Fails

Here at Greenpeace, we judgeourselves by what we win foryou and our environment.

In the past few decades, wehave scored more victories for the planet than anyother independent environmental organization in theworld: from nuclear test ban treaties, to protectionsfor the last great rainforests, to securing the entireAntarctic continent as a World Park, where all drillingand mining is banned.

But, of all Greenpeaces historic environmentalvictories, the international ban on commercial whalingis perhaps our most iconic. It took nearly a decade ofdaring activism, grassroots organizing, and tirelesscampaign work. In the end, it was all worth it: thewhaling moratorium has done wonders for the whales it has even helped bring several species back fromthe brink of extinction.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the very firstGreenpeace campaign to save the whales and putan end to commercial whaling. But, instead of joiningus in the celebration and fulfilling his campaignpromise to Greenpeace, President Obama and hisdelegation at the International Whaling Commissionare supporting a proposal to overturn the moratorium

and reinstate commercial whaling around the world.President Obama, here is what we have to say to that:Not on our watch.

For a man who inspired so much hope in all of us,and who promised the kind of change that would leadto a green and peaceful future, Barack Obama has

turned out to be a much different president than whatwe imagined.

President Obama has proposed building a newgeneration of nuclear power plants, the first in nearly40 years, putting millions of human lives in danger. He has lifted a ban on offshore drilling, allowing the oilindustry to pillage parts of the East and Gulf Coasts, and the coast of Alaska.

Now he threatens to destroy the last of the greatwhales. How can we expect to count on thepresident to tackle big picture issues like globalwarming if he will not even work with us on an issueas simple as stopping the slaughter of our oceansmost mysterious and majestic beings?

After many years of being the Earths mostcourageous defender, Greenpeace knows thatvigilance must always follow victory. Just when wethought the planet was in good hands, we must nowbe more vigilant and on-guard of our environmentalvictories than ever.

The reality of our current situation is unsettling but withthe support of our 3 million members worldwide,Greenpeace is prepared to tackle it head on. Asalways, I thank you for your continued support.

For a Green and Peaceful Future,

    Philip D. RadfordExecutive Director

These seven climate criminals are responsible for dangerous and destructive actsagainst the Earth. They are some of the worst global warming polluters and sciencedeniers. They put profits over people. All seven are motivated by corporate greed and

a ravenous desire to build and exert their political power and influence. In fact, theirvillainous actions to achieve these ends now contribute to at least 300,000 deaths ayear according to the Global Humanitarian Forum the direct result of human-drivenglobal warming.

O n February 24, 2010, thVermont State Senate vote26-4 to shut down the VermonYankee Nuclear Power Plant.

The historic decision came after a longand tireless campaign by Greenpeace,Vermont Public Interest Group, and thecourageous men and women of Vermont.Although Vermont Yankees ownersEntergy, lobbied hard to keep the nuclearplant open, common sense prevailed.

    The 40-year-old reactor has been

plagued by radioactive leaks, missing fuerods, a collapsing cooling tower, andseveral misstatements in testimony byplant officials. Vermont Yankee is now seto shut down in 2012.

Many see Vermonts decision as a clear messageto President Obama in reaction to his pledge of$8.3 billion in loan guarantees to fuel a nuclearrenaissance.

The nuclear renaissance is dead on arrival, saidGreenpeace Nuclear Policy Analyst Jim Riccio.

We can retire old, decrepit, and leaking reactorslike Vermont Yankee and help usher in the energyrevolution that America needs. When Americanshave the choice about the kind of energy they wantin their communities, they dont want nuclear.

The nuclear industry is not at all happy withVermonts decision. Their message back to thepeople of the state: Drop dead. Entergy hasalready threatened to use their financial muscle toevict the current Senate and install a new one thatwill approve an extension of their nuclear plantsoperating license.

Nuclear power is nothing more than a dangerousdistraction from real clean energy solutions likewind and solar. Radioactive pollution can causedamage for generations and there is always thepotential of a major accident, like at Chernobyl orThree Mile Island.

In this new age of terrorism, nuclear plants mightas well have bulls-eye targets painted on their

backsides. Federal agents recently confirmed thata suspected al Qaeda operative worked at six U.S.nuclear sites. Former CIA official Charles F. Faddisalso warned that Americas 104 operating reactorsare dangerously vulnerable to terror attack.

But, none of this seems to phase the nuclear

industry or the Obama administration, whichboth insist that taxpayers should finance morenuclear energy. We must not allow PresidentObamas nuclear renaissance to destroy ourhopes of a green and peaceful future. Help usbuild off the momentum of our Vermont victoryby taking action today!

The orangutan is one of the most charismatic and well-loved species on our planet. It is also one of the mostendangered.Native to the Paradise Forests of Indonesia, orangutans areremarkably similar to humans in terms of anatomy, physiol-ogy, and behavior. They are highly intelligent and have beenobserved crafting tools for scratching, foraging, and

collecting honey.Today, only around 7,000 Sumatran orangutans remain in thewild, clinging to pockets of habitat. These great apes arelisted as critically endangered the most severe listing for ananimal species. The orangutans sharp decline in recentyears is due largely to the destruction of their rainforesthabitat to make way for palm oil plantations.Indonesia is the worlds largest producer of palm oil, which isused in everything from chocolates and snack foods to soapsand cosmetics. Experts predict that, unless serious action istaken to stop deforestation for palm oil, orangutans could beextinct in the wild within the next twenty years.

There are two species of orangutans: Sumatran andBornean. Having evolved on the islands of Sumatra Borneo, both species are now endangered.

Orangutans are the largest arboreal animals on theplanet they live their lives almost entirely in trees. These fascinating orange apes travel by swinging fromtree branch to tree branch, avoiding the groundwherever possible.

Orangutans arms stretch out longer than their bodies, sometimes over 7 feet from fingertip to fingertip.

When male Borneo orangutans mature, they developlarge, prominent cheek pads covered with short, coarhair. These cheek pads are very attractive to otherorangutans the bigger, the better.

Next to humans, orangutans have the longest childhooin the animal world. Orangutan young will nurse until tare around six years old and will stay with their mothersuntil they are around 13-16 years old.

Picture a Japanese whaling ship speeding through theSouthern Ocean with a team of Greenpeace activists

hot on its tail. Suddenly, a mother whale and her calfare spotted and the whaling ships harpooner takes aim.

The activists shouts are drowned out by the blasts ofexploding-tip harpoons being fired at the whales. With twosickening thuds, both mother and baby are hit. The pairdesperately try to free themselves from the harpoon lines. After a long and agonizing struggle, a gunman finally steps ondeck and puts the poor creatures out of their misery.

Helpless, the activists can do nothing but bear witness as thewhales lifeless bodies are dragged up the ships slipway, leaving a long trail of blood behind them.

If the Obama administration gets its way at the next meetingof the International Whaling Commission (IWC), this tragedywill see itself played out over and over again.

For reasons unknown, President Obamas hand-picked

representatives at the IWC are supporting a new proposalthat would not only overturn the international ban on com-mercial whaling which Greenpeace fought tirelessly to passin the 1980s it would legitimize Japans so-called scien-tific slaughter in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

During the presidential race, then-Senator Obama gave thisresponse to a Greenpeace questionnaire dated March 16,2008:

As president, I will ensure that the U.S. providesleadership in enforcing international wildlife protectionagreements, including strengthening the international

moratorium on commercial whaling. Allowing Japan tocontinue commercial whaling is unacceptable.

If President Obama is serious about his commitment toprotecting the whales, he must make sure that his delegationat the IWC opposes any deal that would reinstatecommercial whaling. Instead, the U.S. should support aproposal recently made by Australia, which would leave themoratorium intact and finally put an end to Japans bogusscience in the Southern Ocean. Greenpeace paid withour blood, sweat, and tears for the commercial whalingmoratorium. We will not sit idly by and allow the Obamaadministration to overturn decades of hard work with oneclumsy pen stroke.

In light of this unexpected and deeply disturbing news,Greenpeace is gearing up for one of the biggestbattles that the war against whaling has ever seen. This isan all hands on deck moment, to say the very least.

Work with third-party, science-based organizations toestablish definitions and parameters for addressingcustomer concerns about overfishing, destructive catch orproduction methods, and the importance of marine reserves.

Remove red-listed seafood from their shelves. TraderJoes stopped selling Chilean sea bass in 2005, orangeroughy in July of 2009, and red snapper in March of 2010.

The possibility that the bluefin tuna will be functionallyextinct within the next four years is now, unfortunately, a realone. Overfishing has already killed off at least 90% of thebluefin population since the 1970s.
