FROM THE DEPUTIES’ OFFICE

WAYS TO BOOST YOUR CHILD’S SELF-ESTEEM Self-esteem is feeling good about yourself, feeling that you are a capable and worthwhile person. It allows people to try new things without too much fear of failing, helps them to make and maintain friendships and to cope with the problems they may meet each day. There are many things you can do to help your child appreciate all of the good things about themselves. Here are just some of them but the list can be endless:

Encourage your child to do things that they enjoy and do well. Take an interest in what they are doing and show them that you are proud of them.

Set tasks and goals in small steps so that they are able to succeed. It is alright to gradually make them more challenging so that they have lots of chances to succeed.

Let them know that you are proud of what they can do. It is an idea to leave them little notes when you see them doing something particularly well.

Let them know that what they do around the home to help you is really important and appreciated. (from P&C Journal [The Journal of the federation of Parents and Citizens’ Association of NSW], P. 16, Term 4, 2009)

VISITORS Please remember to sign in and out at the front office and get a visitor sticker if you are visiting the school as a parent/carer helper. Thank you for helping at our school! VALUABLES Please do not allow your child to come to school with valuable items. These can get lost and can be a temptation to other students. For infants (K-2) students we have a rule – “TOYS ARE FOR HOME”. Students who bring something special in for news/show and tell must give it to the class teacher at the start of the day and collect it at the end of the day. Students who bring mobile phones to school must leave them at the front office at the start of the day and pick them up at the end of the day (or have an alternative arrangement with their class teacher). Phones must be turned off or on silent during the day and must be clearly labelled with the owner’s name. Phones must not be left in school bags or be taken into classrooms. Mark Warnock and Jo Meldrum (Rel)

STUDENT WELFARE

STOP! THINK! DO!

REMINDERS

WINTER ILLNESSES AND CHICKEN POX In order to reduce the spread of illness through the school community, if your child contracts a contagious illness we request that parents inform the school as soon as possible and keep the child at home until their doctor clears their return to school. We have a child attending the school who is immune suppressed. Immune suppressed people contract illnesses from others more easily, and their illnesses can be more severe and longer in duration. Chicken Pox is particularly dangerous for this child. Please inform the school office immediately if your child is diagnosed with chicken pox or has had close contact with another child who has chicken pox. The office will then inform the parents of the immune suppressed child, and medical advice can then be sought for this child. If you suspect your child may have developed chicken pox it would be most appreciated if you could keep them home from school and see a doctor to confirm whether they have chicken pox or not.

P&C CALENDAR Tue 21 Aug - Music Committee Meeting 6.45pm

Tue 21 Aug - P&C Meeting 7.30pm

Sat 25 Aug - Family Portrait Fundraiser 9.00am-1.00pm

P&C NEWS Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a relaxing break. Term 3 has started well with a good turnout for the P&C meeting on Tuesday 17 July, even though it was the first day of term. The focus item was Sport, and the discussions focussed on what the P&C can do to support the school with its sport program. It was agreed that the school would benefit not only from financial contributions to fund equipment and other resources, but it would also benefit from the experience and expertise of our parents. If you have any particular sporting skills or experience and you would like to get involved in the sport program at the school, please send an email to [email protected] and let us know the sports you have experience in coaching, playing, or watching. We would really value your contribution. I can confirm that the Revue night made just under $9,000 profit, in addition to the priceless memories! I would like to thank all the parents who helped on the event, in particular Adrienne Comer, Kerri Mills and Cath Sefton. They have all worked tirelessly for the P&C over the last eight years and contributed significantly to our success. I would personally like to thank them for their friendship and mentoring. They are a very hard act to follow. It is not too late to get more involved in the P&C. The Spring Fair is the next big event, and if you would like to find out more about how you can get involved, just send us an email. The next P&C meeting is on Tuesday 21 August. The focus item is Internet Safety. I look forward to seeing you there. Deborah Samuels President

SPORT NEWS

SENIOR A NETBALL 29/06/12 The Summer Hill A team played one of their best games yet against Croydon Park. They won 36 to 1 and pulled together with their defence. Everyone played really well.

SENIOR B NETBALL 29/06/12 The Senior B team played a good game against Croydon Park. It was very close throughout but they managed to get in three more goals than the opposition so that in the end the score was 9 to 6. All team members played strongly as a team and did really well.

JUNIOR A NETBALL Last Friday the Junior A's v Dobroyd Point. Unfortunately, we lost but we did show some great defence work. Selina played very well and Charlotte did a fantastic job as Centre, a position she had never played before. In the end I think we tried our best and did a great job as a team.

Amy (Team Captain)

JUNIOR B NETBALL Last Friday the Junior B Netball team played Dobroyd Point. The game was very close and although we tried our hardest we lost 4-2. Tracey was a stand out player for our team this week as she intercepted many passes from the opposition. However, all of us played well and showed great teamwork.

Katya (Team Captain)

SOFTBALL ZONE TRIALS Congratulations to Mikey G and Sosia T who has made it into the Sydney East Zone Softball Team. Fantastic work, we are all very proud of you!

Missing school leaves gaps in your education.

SUMMER HILL 2012 OLYMPICS The Summer Hill Olympic Ceremony was held on the 24th of July 2012. What a wonderful day it was! The COPA was filled with a sea of colour from all the different countries. The children danced, marched, chanted, sang, cheered, ran, jumped, caught, threw and generally had a ball! A big thank you to our MC extraordinaire Brian Langsworth, who was very entertaining indeed. Also, our torch race was a big hit, thanks to Mr Kay and the sports captains.

Thank you to all the teachers and parents for their support.

FORTHCOMING CELEBRATIONS AND EVENTS

(Text is sourced directly from ‘Many Voices One Land - Calendar for Cultural Diversity 2012’. Published by NSW DEC Multicultural Programs Unit.)

National Tree Day – 27 July This day is an initiative of Planet Ark and follows the same principles of Arbor Day, which is to raise awareness about forest conservation. The aim of National Tree Day is for people to plant trees native to their local area. Wattle Day, NSW – 1 August In New South Wales, Wattle Day is celebrated on 1 August because this is the time of the year when wattle blooms most profusely around Sydney. Horses’ Birthday – 1 August In the Southern Hemisphere all horses born during the current year are deemed to have been born on 1 August. This is important for the horse racing industry as it clarifies the age of a horse for racing purposes.

COMMUNITY NEWS

SRC UPDATE

This semester our school will continue to collect stamps and bread tags for the North Rocks Children’s Home and Wheelchair Australia.

I have also been told that aluminium can ‘ring pulls’ are being requested for Wheelchair for Kids. I love the fact that our children are learning that helping people does not have to involve giving of money. Please continue your outstanding support of these charities and start saving your ring pulls too. As always thank you.
