Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibili-ties included completing the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved toward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leadership. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference.Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergradu-ate research and leadership programs. Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Peri-cles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field.Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was pub-lished by the Syracuse University Press in 2005.His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of ex-ceptional achievements in higher education.Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising.During his first two years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – in-cluding a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Manage-ment Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics. Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impres-sive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s auto-matic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was respon-sible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Gov-ernance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven his-tory. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Ac-ademic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours.

The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate

athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern conference member Appalachian State University captured the last three Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions.

The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

The Elon University Strength and Conditioning Program is based on hard work and competition. The belief being that athletes do not just become strong, but physical-ly and mentally tough. Athletes must work hard each and every day to attain their goals, realizing that the team that works the hardest usually wins. So, the strength and conditioning coaches strive to instill the characteristics of a champion: dedication, sacrifice and toughness. It is the job of the Elon Strength and Conditioning Program to ensure that every time an athlete leaves a training session, he or she has become both physically and men-tally tougher. Each staff member is dedicated to every athlete. The main objectives are maximizing an athlete’s potential and preventing injury. Safety is a major concern and will never be sacrificed to lift more weight. Proper techniques for spotting and performing the lifts are taught before an athlete begins training. As athletes learn how to work harder and compete at a higher level, their team, the department and our university will become stronger and take one more step toward being champions.

Strength & Conditioning

All student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation re-quirements and student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the aca-demic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic demands, such as in-season versus out out-of-season scheduling.

Phoenix athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Last year, Elon landed two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and saw 57 student-athletes earn Academic All-Southern Conference honors. Over the past four years, the Phoenix women’s tennis team has amassed 20 Academic All-Southern Conference selections and 15 Intercollegiate Ten-nis Association Scholar-Athletes. Elon has also been named an ITA All-Academic Team the past three years.

Academic SuccessIn addition to the academic support provided by Elon Ath-letics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers ad-dress topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, The Student-Athlete Advisory council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-ath-letes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

2009 Season OutlookCoach Elizabeth Anderson optimistically enters her fifth campaign at Elon as the Phoenix women’s tennis team welcomes back six re-turning letter-winners from last season’s squad that advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time ever. With the addition of five promising newcomers, Elon looks to improve upon its 15-10 spring last year when it posted the program’s most victories since joining the NCAA Division I level a decade ago.

The 11-player roster consists of lone senior Whitney Butcher (Ashland, Ky./Paul G. Blazer), juniors Laura Graybill (Lan-caster, Pa./Hempfield), Paige Kensrue (Tampa, Fla./Freedom), Anna Milian (Tortosa, Spain/Joaquim Bau) and Hayley Wahl (Gauteng, South Africa/St. Dunstan’s), sophomores Jessica Margolis (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) and Melissa Wolf (Greensboro, N.C./UNC Wilmington) and freshmen Daleen Kloppers (Gauteng, South Africa/Damelin), Lau-ren Sessoms (Belmont, N.C./South Point), Elisa Simonetti (La Spezia, Italy/Schiller) and Sally Wilkey (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward’s).

“Our team is very motivated for this season,” An-derson said. “We ended last spring with a very ex-citing win over UNCG, advancing to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. We were down 3-1 with Paige Kensrue’s solid win at No. 3 singles keeping us in the match. We then managed to come through with thrilling three-set victories from Anna Milian and Hayley Wahl, positioning Laura Graybill to clinch the match for us.”

Milian won her last 11 matches last spring on her way to fashioning an impressive 19-4 singles record – 16-1 at No. 2 – and First Team All-Southern Conference accolades in both singles and doubles. She also became the first Phoenix women’s tennis player to earn South-ern Conference Athlete of the Month honors and was named Elon’s Most Valuable Player.

Kensrue forged a 14-8 singles slate last spring – 12-3 at No. 3 singles – and became just the third Phoenix women’s tennis athlete to obtain Southern Conference Player of the Week status. She also received her team’s Heart and Hustle Award.

“We have a good mix of veteran and new players,” Anderson said. “Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue are both coming off of great sea-sons last year and provide great leadership at the top of our lineup. Our incoming class is very talented and has gained some invaluable experience this fall. We are very fortunate to have great co-captain leadership from Paige Kensrue and Laura Graybill.”

Graybill posted a 7-11 ledger last spring – 3-0 at No. 3 singles – en route to being tabbed Elon’s Most Inspirational Player. Butcher registered an 8-9 record last spring, including a 7-6 mark at No. 5

singles. Wahl went 10-13 last spring – 5-3 at No. 4 singles and 5-6 at No. 6 – while Margolis finished 5-2 at No. 6.

Butcher, Kensrue, Margolis and Wahl were all tabbed Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes for accumulating 3.50 or better grade-point averages for the 2007-08 academic year. The Phoenix also achieved ITA All-Academic Team status for the third consecutive campaign, posting a 3.48 team GPA last year. Butcher, Graybill, Kensrue and Wahl were all named Academic All-Southern Conference.

“The girls have been preparing very hard this fall to help position us for success in the spring season,” Anderson said. “We have con-centrated a lot of our focus toward our on-court strategy and strength and conditioning training. As a result, we are seeing a lot of improvement carry over to the court.”

Milian and Kensrue advanced to the ITA Southeast Regional this fall in both singles and doubles. Also this fall, Simonetti, Sessoms, Milian and Butcher all earned perfect singles records at the Elon Invitational. Simonetti, Wilkey, Butcher and Sessoms all posted wins in singles action at the William and Mary Invitational while Simonetti, Milian, Kensrue and Kloppers all emerged victori-ous on the doubles scene. Kloppers and Simonetti won the doubles consolation at the UNC Wilmington Invitational.

“We have played our toughest fall schedule,” Anderson said. “Our team improved a lot during the course of the fall season. In the William and Mary Fall Invitational, we gained valuable experi-ence from competing against many players from top nationally-ranked schools.”

Elizabeth Anderson enters her fifth season at the helm of the Elon Phoenix women’s tennis program. Through her first four years at Elon, the Phoenix has seen a steady and exciting rise in the Southern conference standings. Elon finished eighth in the league in 2005, but has recorded a top-five finish in each of the past two campaigns.

In addition to all of the improvements on the court, the Phoenix has excelled academi-cally, registering 20 Academic All-Southern Conference selections, and 15 Intercolle-giate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes during Anderson’s tenure. Under An-derson’s guidance and leadership, Elon has been named an ITA All-Academic Team for

three consecutive years running since 2005-06. The team never earned that honor prior to Anderson’s arrival.

Anderson coached the SoCon Freshman of the Year – the first for Elon – as well as the first Elon women’s tennis player to ever earn First Team All-Southern Conference accolades in 2007. In 2006, Elizabeth Kernodle was rec-ognized as the ITA Southeast Region Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award and Southern Conference Sportsman-ship Award recipient. In 2005 and 2006, Kelly Fleck was honored as a Southern Conference Player of the Week.

In 2008, Paige Kensrue was named a Southern Conference Player of the Week and Anna Milian was tabbed a Southern Conference Player of the Month. The 2008 campaign also saw Anderson coach two Phoenix play-ers and a double tandem to First Team All-Southern Conference status in singles – both firsts for the program.

Prior to coming to Elon, Anderson spent one season (2003-04) as the assistant coach at Auburn University. In 2002-03, she volunteered as an assistant women’s tennis coach for the University of North Carolina’s top-10 program. Anderson was the assistant women’s tennis coach at the University of Idaho in 2001-02 where she earned her master’s degree with an emphasis in sports psychology.

Anderson served as a tennis pro at the Duke Faculty Club, Hollow Rock Racquet Club and Chapel Hill Tennis Club in 2002-03. She coached Tennis Europe’s National 1 team in the summer of 2002, traveling to tournaments in Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands and France. She also worked with the Van der Meer World Class tennis pro-gram in Hilton Head, S.C. in the summer of 2001 where she also received her PTR professional certification.

A 2001 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Anderson played on the Seahawk tennis team for four years (1997-2001). She was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Honor Roll each year and received the Most Improved Player award in 1998 and 2001 as well as the Coach’s Award in 2001. In 2000 and 2001, she earned the Seahawk Award. Before transferring to UNCW, Anderson played on the 1996-97 North Carolina State Univer-sity tennis team. In 1997, she was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll and was a University Scholar.

In addition to her coaching duties, Anderson served a three-year term as a member on the ITA Southeast region committee. In 2007, she served as an NCAA representative during the NCAA regional tournament. She has also served on the Executive Committee of the Alamance Junior Tennis Foundation since 2004.

The former Elizabeth Perry married Nathan Anderson in July 2007.

Bob OwensAssistant Coach • 9th Season

Bob Owens is entering his ninth season as the assistant coach for the Phoenix tennis programs. He helped the men’s team clinch the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament Championship and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.

A long-time tennis coach at nearby Northeast Guilford High School, Owens worked closely with former Phoenix head coach Tom Parham for more than 20 years and now serves as an assistant to head coaches Michael Leonard and Elizabeth Anderson.

A six-time Triad 3A Conference Coach of the Year, Owens has been both a tennis and football coach for more than 25 years. Owens has coached two 3A state champion doubles teams, as well as his son, who was a state runner-up in singles. He was once one of the 12 finalists for the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Award.

Owens is currently a member of the United States Tennis Associa-tion. Owens graduated from Guilford College and was a two-time All-American in football. He then began a professional career with the Philadelphia Bell of the Old World Football League before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles and playing two seasons.

He and his wife, Wanda, have three adult children - twin sons, Todd and Jay, and a daughter, Amber and a proud grandfather of Brody.

Anderson on Owens: “Bob is an invaluable part of our team. His energy and pas-sion for tennis is contagious. Bob has also taken a strong interest in our conditioning and we are improving a lot.”


Jennifer TucciVolunteer Assistant Coach • 1st Season

Jennifer Tucci will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the Elon women’s tennis program for the 2009 spring season following three successful campaigns as a member on the Phoenix women’s squad.

Tucci was a member of the Elon women’s tennis team from 2005-08, playing a variety of positions in singles No. 2-4 and doubles No. 1-3. She served as captain from 2006-08 and received Academic All-Southern Conference honors in 2007 and 2008 She was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2007 and 2008.

Tucci has been playing tennis for 12 years and coaching/teaching for seven. Due to an injury, Tucci’s tennis career was cut short following last season. She graduated from Elon University in December of 2008 as a corporate communications major and business adminis-tration minor.

“Being out there with my team is the most important thing,” Tucci said. “So I am excited for the opportunity to still be a part of Elon tennis.”

The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center

In 1987, Dr. James Powell and his wife, Anne, presented Elon University with a major challenge gift for the construction of an on-campus, 12-court, lighted tennis facility.

The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center consists of 12 hard courts separated into bays of three courts each. The court bays are captured by a 10-foot high, vinyl-coated fence fitted with nine-foot polypropylene wind screens. Evening tennis is made possible with low-level lighting. Each court is equipped with a state-of-the-art intercom system.

Located at the center of the tennis complex is a two-story pavilion that houses a storage area, concession stand and a viewing deck. From the viewing deck, competition can be observed in any direction, as well as the beautifully landscaped area between the courts. Shrubs and flowerbeds complement the permanent bleachers next to the two stadium courts, which honey locust trees help to shade the grassy seating area.

In the summer of 2008, all 12 courts were resurfaced. The courts are now maroon and gold – Elon University’s school colors.


Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire.

Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever.

The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a per-fect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself.

The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge.

The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics pro-gram and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence.
