Dave Blank entered his second year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2007-08 campaign, following a year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. Blank also engineered staff expansion in the Department of Athletics — including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club — and set a plan in motion for future facility improvements.

Under Blank’s direction, 10 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned better winning percentages and higher Southern Conference finishes last year than in the previous campaign.

Last year also saw the Phoenix forge the school’s best SoCon finishes in football, women’s cross country and women’s tennis, record the program’s first winning men’s soccer season at the Division I level and post SoCon regu-lar season and tournament championships in men’s tennis, claiming 14 consecutive victories before falling to Clemson in NCAA postseason action.

Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006, arriving on the scene just in time to witness the Phoenix capture the SoCon men’s basketball North Division crown, a SoCon men’s tennis regular season co-championship and the outright SoCon baseball regular season title. Prior to coming to Elon, Blank spent six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University.

At Drake, Blank directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program and a new Life Skills program for student-athletes, encouraging participation in community activities and career development. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above.

Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhance-ments were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and con-ditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays.

He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations.

Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director ac-colades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005.

Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Di-rector of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003.

Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996.

Blank began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Carolina for three seasons (1982-85). He then served Wofford College for a year (1985-86) as Assistant Director of Athletics and assistant basketball coach before working a two-season stint (1986-88) as an assistant basketball coach at Lock Haven.

A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986.

Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children — Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Dr. Leo M. Lambert became Elon University’s eighth president on Jan. 1, 1999. His tenure has been marked by the successful completion of a $46.7 million capital campaign, the opening of Belk Library, the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the transition to university status. He has provided leadership for the conception of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan, which will guide Elon’s efforts to become one of the nation’s premier small, selective, undergraduate universities.

Chair of the executive committee of North Carolina Campus Compact, a coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education, Lambert also heads the president’s council of Project Pericles, an initiative to promote socially responsible citizenship among

college and university students. He has written extensively about post-secondary education and has spearheaded several na-tional projects aimed at improving college and university teaching, including the Future Professoriate Project, which he founded at Syracuse University. Lambert has been a member of the boards of the American Council on Education and the American As-sociation for Higher Education. In 1998, he was honored by Change magazine as one of the nation’s outstanding young leaders in higher education.

Lambert graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Vermont in Burlington and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He and his wife, Laurie, both natives of Scotia, N.Y., have two daughters, Callie and Mollie.

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which began its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination.

The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State University captured the last three Foot-

ball Championship Subdivision titles. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions.

The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in opera-tion from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Strength & Conditioning

The Elon University Strength and Conditioning Program is based on hard work and competition. The belief being that athletes do not just become strong, but physically and mentally tough. Athletes must work hard each and every day to attain their goals, realizing that the team that works the hardest usually wins. So, the strength and conditioning coaches strive to instill the characteristics of a champion: dedication, sacrifice and toughness. It is the mission of the Elon strength and con-ditioning program to ensure that every time an athlete leaves a training session, he or she has become both physically and mentally tougher.

Each staff member is dedicated to every athlete. The main objec-tives are maximizing an athlete’s potential and preventing injury. Safety is a major concern and will never be sacrificed to lift more weight. Prop-er techniques for spotting and performing the lifts are taught before an athlete begins training. As athletes learn how to work harder and com-pete at a higher level, their team, the department and our university will become stronger and take one more step toward being champions.

Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Aca-demic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in the AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in the AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours.

Registration ServicesAll student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor through the academic advising office. The academic advisor serves as the primary contact for preregistration and graduation require-ments. Student-athletes meet with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of registration to determine scheduling needs. Student-athletes also meet with the academic coordinator for their sport to balance their academic schedule with athletic de-mands, such as in-season versus out-of-season scheduling.

Life SkillsIn addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athlet-ics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

Academic SuccessOf the more than 400 student-athletes, athletic training students, cheerleaders and dance team members at Elon last spring, 206 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, which recognizes those students with a semester GPA of 3.0 or better. In addition, 99 athletes achieved either the President’s List or the Dean’s List honors last spring.

2008 Season Outlook Michael Leonard anxiously begins his fourth season as the head coach of the Elon University men’s tennis squad, welcoming four lettermen back from last year’s 23-3 team that claimed Southern Conference regular sea-son and tournament titles and made the program’s first NCAA Division I tournament appearance. Elon enters the 2008 season ranked No. 53 nationally among the country’s NCAA Division I teams, according to the FILA Collegiate Men’s Tennis Rankings. The Phoenix peaked at No. 42 last season - the program’s highest ranking since officially joining Division I during the 1999-2000 academic year - and finished the 2007 campaign ranked No. 44 nationally. Elon finished 3-3 against nationally-ranked teams and 20-0 against unranked programs last spring while ac-cumulating an astounding 116-27 singles record (.811) and a sizzling 50-16 doubles slate (.758). Of the program-best 23 victories, 13 were decided in shutout fashion. The Phoenix forged a perfect 12-0 mark against Southern Conference opponents and suffered sole non-con-ference setbacks to nationally-ranked foes Clemson, Duke and Wake Forest. Elon’s 14-match winning streak late in the season marked the program’s longest streak since the 1993 squad won 17 matches in a row. With the departure of seven lettermen from last spring’s 11-player roster, Elon will count on its six newcomers to contribute immediately. The 10-player roster consists of one senior, two juniors, one sophomore and six freshmen. Leonard, the two-time defending SoCon Coach of the Year, welcomes senior Mason Schermerhorn (Colfax, N.C.), junior Kevin Beard (Matthews, N.C.), junior and two-time team MVP Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa), sophomore Clark Howell (Raleigh, N.C.) and newcomers Chase Helpingstine (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Philip Nemec (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), Oscar Podlewski (London, England), Alberto Rojas (Atlat-lahucan, Mexico), Chris Spalding (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Cody Stauffer-MacDow-ell (Asheville, N.C.) to his 2008 roster. A two-time First Team All-SoCon player at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, team captain Gooch (17-4 at No. 1 singles last spring) enters the spring ranked 13th in the NCAA Division I Mideast Region and 72nd in the nation - the highest rankings ever of a Phoenix men’s tennis athlete - according to FILA. “Gooch brings a passion to the courts each and every day which is contagious to other players,” says Leonard.

Along with Gooch, Schermerhorn will provide a tough one-two punch at the top of the Phoenix lineup. Schermerhorn (18-4 at No. 3 singles last spring) earned First Team All-SoCon honors as Gooch’s doubles partner, as the duo forged an 18-3 record last spring. “Be-cause the 2008 squad is composed mostly of freshmen, the leader-ship of Gooch and Schermerhorn will play a vital role in the success of the Phoenix,” says Leonard. Aside from Gooch and Schermerhorn, Beard is the only other re-turning player to have played a dual match. He will look to earn a regular spot in the singles lineup. Howell, who was injured for part of the 2007 season, will add depth to the doubles lineup. Two freshmen who should make an immediate impact in the singles

lineup are Podlewski and Rojas, both of whom have been extremely successful at the junior level. While the top half of the order is solidified, much of the team’s success this season will depend on its depth. The other four newcomers, Helpingstine, Stauffer-MacDowell, Nemec and Spalding, will compete for action in both singles and doubles play. Elon will open the season against Duke, Princeton and Old Dominion, all of whom are nationally ranked in the preseason polls. Other notable out-of-conference matches include road bouts with South Carolina and Wake Forest, as well as a key home match versus Drake. “This is as strong of a non-conference schedule as we’ve put together since I’ve been here, and should be crucial in getting us ready for conference play,” according to Leon-ard. The Phoenix will begin a tough SoCon slate on the road against Chattanooga on March 1. Three SoCon teams - Elon, College of Charleston and Furman - finished 2007 and enter 2008 nationally ranked.


Named the 2006 Southern Conference Coach of the year after guiding the Phoenix to a share of the regular season title that season, men’s tennis head coach Michael Leonard earned the honor again in 2007 as he led Elon to its first-ever SoCon Tournament championship in any sport, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Finishing with an overall 23-3 record during the 2007 campaign, Elon surpassed its 1990 NAIA Division I national championship team (22-3) as the winningest squad in Phoenix men’s tennis history. Leonard was a junior playing at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles on the 1990 team. Of the 2007 squad’s 23 wins, 13 were decided in shutout fashion.

The 2007 season saw the Phoenix forge a perfect 12-0 mark against Southern Conference opponents with sole setbacks coming to nationally-ranked foes Clemson, Duke and Wake Forest. Elon’s 14-match winning streak entering

Now entering his fourth year at the helm of the men’s tennis program, Leonard led Elon from a last-place finish in the Southern Conference in 2005 to a share of first place in 2006 and the outright title in 2007. The remarkable turn-around saw the Phoenix go

from 5-17 overall and 0-10 in the SoCon in 2005 to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in the SoCon (12-0 at home) in 2006 with a senior-less squad.

Damon Gooch and Anuwat Dalodom were named to the First Team All-Southern Conference in singles. The Gooch/Mason Schermerhorn duo

landed first team status in doubles while Gustaf Asplund and Austin Fenn achieved second team distinction in singles.

Under Leonard’s mentoring, Gooch earned 2006 SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades and was honored with Elon’s first-ever national ranking among NCAA Division I players at No. 120. Gooch and partner Fenn earned the program’s first NCAA-I doubles ranking of No. 77 and were honored with First Team All-SoCon status in doubles play. Gooch also received First Team All-SoCon accolades in singles.

In his first season at Elon, Leonard coached First Team All-Southern Conference selection and ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic

All-American Pramote Malasitt to Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete hon-ors, recognizing him as the Elon athlete of the year. Malasitt was dubbed First

Team All-SoCon in both singles and doubles (with Fenn).The 2006 squad also became the first Elon men’s tennis team to receive

the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Award. Malasitt (2005), Kyle Smialek (2005,2007), Alex Garrett (2006), Asplund (2007), Sebastian Bredberg (2007), Kevin Colin (2007) and Gooch (2006) have all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction during Leonard’s tenure.

Prior to joining the Phoenix program, Leonard served as the Tennis Di-rector at the Raleigh Racquet Club (1995-2004) in Raleigh, N.C., where he

was in charge of one of the largest junior programs in the South with nearly 200 juniors. He was also responsible for coordinating and implementing clin-

ics, facilitating tennis and social activities for members and handling all finan-cial operations of the tennis program. During his tenure, Leonard coached many

nationally-ranked juniors, including two national champions.A 1991 Elon graduate, Leonard was named all-conference and all-district dur-

ing each of his four years of competition. In 1991, he was tabbed the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and earned Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete

honors. An NAIA All-American in both 1990 and 1991, he was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

Leonard continued his playing career after his college days, becoming the North Carolina state champion in 1992 and earning a No. 1 ranking in the North Carolina Men’s Open Division. He played professional tennis in 1993-94, during which time he competed in circuit tournament competitions throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, England, Spain and Portugal, achieveing a world ranking.

Leonard and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, Olivia and Julia.

Bob Owens is entering his eighth season as the volunteer assistant coach for the Phoenix tennis programs. Last season, he helped the Phoenix capture the Southern Con-ference regular season and tournament titles en route to the program’s first

NCAA Division I tournament appearance.A long-time tennis coach at nearby Northeast Guilford High School,

Owens worked closely with former Phoenix coach Tom Parham for more than 20 years and now serves as an assistant to head coaches Michael Leonard and Elizabeth Anderson.

A six-time Triad 3A Conference Coach of the Year, Owens has been both a tennis and football coach for more than 25 years. Owens has

coached two 3A state champion doubles teams, as well as his son, who was a state runner-up in singles.

Currently a member of the United States Tennis Association, he was once one of 12 finalists for the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Award.

While at Guilford College, Owens was a two-time All-American in football. He then went on to play five seasons with the Phila-delphia Eagles.

He and his wife, Wanda, have three adult children - twin sons, Todd and Jay, and daughter, Amber.

Anuwat Dalodom will serve as the student assistant coach for the Elon tennis programs for the 2007-08 season after logging two extremely successful seasons on the Phoenix men’s tennis squad.

Dalodom was a member of the Elon men’s tennis team from 2005-07, playing No. 2 singles and doubles on a pair of Southern Conference regular season championship squads and the 2007 SoCon Tournament title team.

Last season, Dalodom was named the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament MVP after sweeping all three of his singles matches and taking

two of his three doubles contests in the tournament. He finished last spring with an 18-4 singles record and a 13-5 doubles ledger with partner Gustaf

Asplund. In addition to being named First Team All-Southern Conference, Dalo-dom was honored as SoCon Player of the Week for the week of April 3, 2007 and the SoCon Athlete of the Month for April 2007.

In 2005-06, Dalodom received the team’s leadership award after posting an 11-5 record in singles play and a 13-5 ledger in doubles action.

The Bangkok, Thailand native will graduate from Elon with a degree in business administration.

In 1987, Dr. James Powell and his wife, Anne, presented Elon with a major challenge gift for the construction of an on-campus, 12-court, lighted tennis facility.

The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center consists of 12 hard courts separated into bays of three courts each. The court bays are captured by a 10-foot high, vinyl-coated fence fitted with nine-foot polypropylene wind screens. Evening tennis is made possible with low-level lighting. Each court is equipped with a state-of-the-art intercom system.

Located at the center of the tennis complex is a two-story pavilion that houses a storage area, concession stand and a viewing deck. From the viewing deck, competition can be observed in any direction, as well as the beautifully landscaped area between the courts. Shrubs and flowerbeds complement the permanent bleachers next to the two stadium courts, while honey locust trees help to shade the grassy seating area.

Elon has enjoyed a tremendous home court advantage at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in recent years, accumulat-ing a perfect 22-0 record over the past two seasons.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anuwat Dalodom, Gustaf Asplund and co-captain Austin Fenn all emerged victorious in both singles and doubles play as top-seeded Elon knocked off second-seeded College of Charleston 4-1 in the final of the 2007 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship Sunday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel campus.

With the victory, the Phoenix (23-2) gave Elon its first Southern Conference tournament title and automatic NCAA tournament bid in any sport since officially joining league competition four years ago. The Phoenix will now advance to the NCAA Regionals, held May 11-13 on 16 campus sites throughout the country. Elon will learn of its regional site, opponent and schedule May 1 when the tournament field is an-nounced.

The Phoenix entered SoCon tournament action ranked No. 44 nationally in the weekly FILA Collegiate NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Rankings while the Cougars (18-2) came in at No. 57. Both of College of Charleston’s losses this season were to Elon.

Dalodom and Fenn finished off Omer Abramovich and Perry Allen 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while Asplund and Kevin Colin bested Jimmy

Petit and Justin Malina 8-4 at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for the Phoenix. Elon’s Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn were trailing Or Dekel and Marcus DiGliodo 6-5 at No. 1 when the point was decided.

Malina tied the match at 1-1 by posting a 7-6, 6-0 triumph over Phoenix co-captain Sebas-tian Bredberg at No. 4 singles. Fenn then dispatched Allen 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6, giving Elon the lead back for good. Dalodom’s 7-5, 6-4 win over DiGliodo at No. 2 stretched the Phoenix edge to 3-1. Asplund upended Scott Myers 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 to clinch the Elon victory.

At No. 1 singles, Gooch was leading Dekel, the SoCon Player of the Year the past two seasons, by a 7-5, 2-2 margin when the match was decided. At No. 3, Schermerhorn won his first set against Abramovich 6-4, but lost the second one 6-1. The two players were in the midst of a 3-3 deadlock when the contest ended.

“This has been a complete team effort,” Elon coach Michael Leonard said. “We were very fortunate to have different players step up and contribute throughout the tournament and really throughout the season. This team has been solid up and down the lineup. There really isn’t a weak link for us this year. When someone has had an off-day, someone else has made up the difference and helped to pull us through. Selecting a team MVP this year

becomes a tougher decision to make every time we step out on the courts.”For the week, Dalodom fashioned a 3-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles ledger with Fenn as his partner

en route to earning tournament MVP honors. Dalodom sports an 18-3 singles slate this spring. Gooch (17-4) and Dalodom were both named First Team All-Southern Conference selections while As-plund (18-3) and Fenn (18-4) were tabbed to the second team.

The Gooch/Schermerhorn duo (18-2) earned First Team All-SoCon accolades in doubles while Leonard, a 1991 Elon graduate, was dubbed the Southern Confer-ence Coach of the Year for the second consecutive campaign.

By claiming its 23rd victory, Elon passed its 1990 NAIA Division I national championship team (22-3) as the winningest squad in Phoenix men’s tennis history. Leonard was a junior playing No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles on the 1990 team.

Of the 23 wins, 13 have been decided in shutout fashion. That tally includes a perfect 12-0 mark against SoCon opponents with sole setbacks to nationally-ranked foes Duke and Wake Forest. Elon’s current 14-match winning streak marks the program’s longest streak since the 1993 squad won 17 matches in a row.
