The Southern Conference, which begins its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAADivision I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific

10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision league. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won

the last two Football Championship Subdivision national titles. The conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAADivision I Championships.Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on ESPN The Magazine

Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected fromSoCon institutions. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont

Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical doc-uments.The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic

Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky,Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of1921.Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Current league members

are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina andWofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford will officially join the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12.John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference.

In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compli-ance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football

coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. The first Southern Conference championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to

become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field,

wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golfand softball.

The Legend of the PhoenixThroughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and goldbird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong — the most marvelous bird ever created byhuman imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built anest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. Fromthe ashes emerged the next Phoenix — reborn and renewed, with strengthforged in fire.

Fire, too, has shaped the history of ElonUniversity. The disastrous fire of 1923 all butdestroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, col-lege records, classrooms, the library and thechapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set inmotion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, strongerthan ever.

The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. Itis a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recre-ating itself.

The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spirituallight. And so too, throughout history, the Phoenix has served as asymbol of light and knowledge.

The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athlet-ics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excel-lence.

There is only onePhoenix. There isonly one Elon. Catch the Fire!

2007 Phoenix Women's Soccer - 19

2007 OUTLOOKCoach Chris Webb enters her third season at the helm of the Phoenix women’s soccer squad, looking to continue to buildthe program into a Southern Conference contender. Webb is confident that Elon is heading in that direction thanks, in part,to this year’s freshman class which was rated as the second-best in the SoCon and 20th in the Southeast by Soccer Buzz. The 2007 edition of the Phoenix sports just one senior, seven juniors, nine sophomores and 12 freshmen.

Senior ClassGoalkeeper Kaitlin Lannon (Tinton Falls, N.J.) is Elon’s lone senior this year. Lannon has worked as a back-up through-out her career, appearing in one match last year. Her leadership will be a much-needed quality on this young team.

Junior ClassKatina Boozer (Charlottesville, Va.) is the team’s leading returning scorer, having netted three goals and added one assistlast season. Boozer, a midfielder/forward, will be looked to for increased production this year.

Webb will also rely heavily on midfielder/defender Kerri Speers (Homestead, Fla.), defender/midfielder/forward KatiePersichini (Hudson, Ohio) and forward Susannah Gianakos (Charlottesville, Va.) on the offensive end. Speers battledinjuries a year ago, but led the Phoenix in scoring her freshman season. One of only four players to start every match in2006, Persichini and Gianakos each tallied one assist in their sophomore campaigns. Persichini’s defensive prowess willalso prove to be a vital asset to the 2007 team.

Forward/midfielder Stacie Ledford (Raleigh, N.C.) and forward Jessica Weaver (West Chester, Pa.) both add depth to thePheonix attack.

Elon’s starting goalkeeper is also a member of the junior class. Lizz Johnson (Miami, Fla.) stopped 85 shots in 17 gamesas a sophomore. She is expected to begin the year in net again.

Sophomore ClassThe sophomore class represents the Elon class that rated 19th in the region and 94th in the nation by Soccer Buzz last year. Those players contributed immediately in 2006 and will be expected to continue to step up their games in 2007.

Forward Molly Calpin (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the team’s third-leading scorer as a freshman, netting three goals.Defender/midfielder Meagan Aho (Matthews, N.C.) and defender/midfielder/forward Alix Heinicke (Bay Village,Ohio)were the only other two members of this class to record a point last year. Allthree should figure into Elon’s scoring threat again in 2007.

Defender/midfielder Lauren Griffith (Atlanta, Ga.), midfielder/defenderMorgan Wallace (Edwards, Colo.), defender/midfielder Laura Norwind(Darnestown, Md.) and midfielder Maisie Leach (Salem, Va.) all appeared in atleast 10 matches as true freshmen and will compete for more action this year.Midfielder Tricia Serdy (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) made eight appearances last seasonand will red-shirt this season to recover from an injury.

The final sophomore is goalie Lauren Wisniewski (Fairless Hills, Pa.) who wasthe number two keeper in 2006. Wisniewski started two games, posted oneshutout and made a total of 19 saves as a freshman. She also had one shutout.Wisniewski should push Johnson for time in goal this fall.

Freshman ClassAnother highly regarded freshman class enters Elon this fall and is expected tocontribute immediately. This 12-member class represents eight states and wasrated second in the SoCon and 20th in the region by Soccer Buzz.

Joining the Phoenix this year will be: Meghan Braun (Glenelg, Md.), Ali Coad(Alpharetta, Ga.), Megan Deutschle (Burlington, N.C.), Maggie Duszlak(Burlington, N.C.), Brittany Hallberg (Richmond, Va.), Taylor Harlan (MiamiSprings, Fla.), Amanda Jones (Roswell, Ga.), Maria Maturo (Stratford, Conn.),Liz Payne (Virginia Beach, Va.), Lia Shuford (Birmingham, Ala.), KyleWaggoner (Overland Park, Kan.) and Alanna Winsper (Virginia Beach, Va.).
