HYUNDAI ELEVATOR NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018 13 EL TOON Tips for elevator maintenance in the summer In the summer, when temperatures and rainfall increase, elevator accident rates tend to rise. In such hot and humid conditions, the Elevator Control Panel in the Machine Room, located on the top floor of the building, might break down more often than usual. Here are some elevator management tips to avoid accidents and failures during the summer. Water leakage mainly comes through the walls or window frames of the machine room. Check the joints of all window frames carefully, as rainwater seeps into these cracks more than expected. As the machine room houses many expensive parts, including the Control Panel, a more thorough examination needs to be conducted to avoid major damage. When there is a possibility of water flowing into the elevator shaft due to heavy rain, stop the elevator car at the highest floor and switch it to parking mode immediately. If the elevator is already flooded, turn off the elevator power supply from the Machine Room and open up the brake or hoist the car up manually. In this case, as any relief actions may be extremely dangerous, consult the elevator maintenance company before taking any measures. Heavy rainfall is here! The top floor!! Understanding how to manage the elevator in the summer is essential to avoid any accidents! Routine Elevator Safety Checkup As the Elevator Control Panel uses a precise semiconductor device, it often breaks down when the surrounding temperature reaches more than 40 degrees Celsius. To keep the temperature of the Machine Room at 40 degrees or lower in the summer, the ventilation system should be in operation. Summer blackouts often occur as the building’s energy demand spikes due to cooling. In most cases, a power outage causes the elevator to stop suddenly and all of its lights to go off. Trapped inside a stalled elevator, passengers can easily get nervous and fear it might crash to the ground. To ensure that passengers can promptly call for rescue, frequently check whether the Emergency Interphone and Lights are working properly. 1. Check the machine room ventilation system 2.
