What is Australia Day?On the 26th January we come together and celebrate all the good things about us and our country. These are things that we are proud of and we think about things that we can do to make Australia an even better place to live.

The History of Australia DayOn the 26th January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove as commander of the first arrival of convict ships from Great Britain.

In 1994, the 26th of January became a public holiday for all Australians.

How we commemorate Australia Day There are lots of ways that Australians celebrate Australia Day. Some people go to special ceremonies, concerts, firework displays, parades, going to the beach or having a barbeque.

How we commemorate Australia Day – Australian of the Year AwardsEvery year on Australia Day, we give awards to people called Australian of the Year Awards. People get these awards for being role models and making Australia a better place to live. How we commemorate Australia Day – Citizenship CeremoniesCitizenship ceremonies are for people who want to live in our country because they know it is a great place to live. People come from all over the world to live in Australia and makes our country full of interesting and different people..

How we commemorate Australia Day – Affirmation CeremoniesAffirmation ceremonies happen when Australian-born citizens affirm their loyalty to Australia and its people. These people say:As an Australian citizen, I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I sharewhose rights and liberties I respect,and whose laws I uphold and obey.

How we commemorate Australia Day – Flying the FlagOn Australia Day, people all around Australia will fly the National Flag and the Aboriginal flag. The national flag represents three symbols – the Union flag, the Commonwealth star and the Southern Cross.The Aboriginal Flag represents black for the Aboriginal people, red for the earth and yellow for the sun.
