Kissimmee, FL - Last Sunday, September 13, the Consulate of Mexico in Orlando held a big activity on the occasion of the celebration of the 205th Independence of Mexico. The Independence Party event was

held on Sunday afternoon on the Consulate of Mexico grounds in Orlando. The Consul Juan Sabines presided the "El Grito de Independencia" ceremony, an important Mexican tradition consisting of the sounding of the bell, the threefold shout of ¡Viva México! and singing the national anthem.The activity was open to the general

public and attendees enjoyed music, mariachis, folkloric dances, raffles, prizes, and a variety of Mexican dishes. Information from a wide range of services targeted to the Hispanic community was also offered, from selling cars, tools, tractors, crafts and various Mexican products.

Kissimmee, FL - Por su destacado y constante trabajo en la comunidad, la Supervisora de Elecciones Mary Jane Arrington fue honrada recientemente por la Comisión de Florida del Estatus de la Mujer con un Premio de Logro 2015.

“We honor women from all over the state for their commitment and service to their community,’’ said Yvonne Fry, chairwoman and a commissioner for the state Commission on the Status of Women, adding that the women honored with the Achievement Awards were nominated based on their continued works with local charities, community groups and non-profit organizations.

Supervisor Arrington’s work in the Osceola community began with volunteering at her church and in her children’s schools. She then served on numerous city and county boards such as the City of Kissimmee Planning Commission, the Children’s Home and Help Now to name a few. In 1994, Arrington was the first woman elected to the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners. She held that office until 2002. She is also a founding supervisor of the Toho Water Authority. Arrington was elected Supervisor of Elections in 2008.

Supervisor Arrington said she was honored to receive the Achievement Award.

“There are so many outstanding women who are doing amazing things and serving their communities. My parents instilled in me the desire to serve and I hope I have instilled that same desire in my children and others,’’ she said.

Supervisor Arrington has four adult children, two of whom are actively involved in government service and three grandsons. She also credits the support of her husband over the years with being able to serve others.

“Many years ago, I wisely chose a wonderful man to be my spouse. Without his support my community service would not have been possible.’’ she said.

season is heating up with the recent development of several tropical systems in the Atlantic. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, but history shows the most active time begins in late-August and peaks in mid-September.While it’s been almost a decade

since a hurricane made landfall in Florida, Kissimmee Utility Authority is still highly aware of the damage a hurricane can inflict, so we go to great lengths to be prepared. Preparation is key. Since the

memorable 2004 hurricane season, KUA has invested millions of dollars to strengthen its electric system so the system is strong and ready when severe weather strikes. This can result in less damage and fewer electricity outages. Hardening activities include inspecting and replacing weak power poles, trimming trees away from power lines and installing new equipment.These investments by KUA can

pay off not only during hurricane season, but throughout the year. After any storm that results in electricity outages, our crews are here in the community to respond quickly and safely. Statistics show locally-owned

utilities like KUA shine at providing reliable electricity. Statewide averages for utilities show that customers of community-owned utilities enjoy quicker repair times and shorter outages. Municipal utilities have led the way among all electric utilities with the shortest average repair time for the past 11 years. This is an important measure of reliability that our linemen, and all of our utility staff, take pride in.It has been some time since a

major storm or series of storms hit the state, but planning for the

Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 16, for the grand opening of the Kissimmee Trail Bridge. Spanning John Young Parkway, just north of Columbia Avenue in Kissimmee, the pedestrian and bicycle bridge structure includes a 220 foot main bridge with approach ramps to tie into the existing trail on the west and east sides of John Young Parkway. The Kissimmee Trail Bridge features an arch with signage welcoming traffic into the City, with the bridge connected by two towers, each approximately 40 feet tall. The total structure exceeds 1,100 feet in length and serves as a gateway structure into the City. The Kissimmee Trail Bridge now

MetroPlan Orlando, the Kissimmee Trail Bridge was made possible by utilizing Florida Department of Transportation funds.

Orlando, FL – Valencia College ranks fourth in the nation for the number of associate degrees awarded to students, according to a ranking of more than 3,600 colleges and universities published this week by Community College Week.

To compile its annual Top 100 rankings, the editors of Community College Week used data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics and focused on degrees conferred during the 2013-14 academic year. In that year, Valencia awarded 7,384 associate degrees – 60 percent of which were earned by minority students.

The rankings were published Sept. 7, 2015. The number of degrees Valencia awarded in 2013-14 jumped by 4 percent over the previous year, 2012-13.

Also noteworthy, the college ranks fourth in the nation in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students and seventh in the number awarded to African-Americans.

The college also ranked third in the nation in the number of one-year certificates awarded. Around the country, more than 5,500 colleges, universities and other educational institutions offer one-year certificates. Aside from the number of overall associate degrees conferred, Valencia ranked high in the number of associate degrees awarded across a number of academic disciplines: second in the number of degrees awarded in general studies and the humanities; 14th in computer and information sciences; 22nd in business degrees, 37th in engineering technologies and engineering-related fields; 42nd in criminal justice; and 47th in registered nursing.

Valencia offers four types of degrees: Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The A.A. degree parallels the first two years of a four-year bachelor’s degree. In Florida, graduates with an A.A. degree are guaranteed acceptance as juniors into the state university system.

DirectConnect to UCF, a long-standing partnership between Valencia and the University of Central Florida, has contributed to Valencia’s high transfer rate, which is considered to be among the highest in the nation. DirectConnect to UCF guarantees that Valencia graduates will be accepted and receive accelerated admission to UCF. Since the program’s inception in 2006, more than 36,000 students have transferred from Valencia to UCF.

In 2012, Valencia College’s DirectConnect to UCF program was selected by Excelencia in Education, a Washington, D.C.-based organization, as the nation’s top program for increasing academic opportunities and success for Hispanic students at the associate level.

Led by the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, “Operation Blind Date” was conducted September 10-13, 2015, as a part of the Central Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Participating agencies included: Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Kissimmee Police Department, Orlando Police

detectives, posed as juveniles to talk with individuals in chat rooms and instant messaging programs on the Internet. Suspects would travel to a meeting location located in Osceola County with the purpose of having sex with a child. One suspect traveled from as far as Ocala and another suspect brought his two-year old child with him. All the suspects were arrested in Osceola County and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
