El MerkThe El Merk mega project is expected to produce oil and natural gas for the next 30 to 40 years. The El Merk facility is located in Block 208 in the southern part of the Berkine Basin, the Block currently comprises four oil and gas fields, which were discovered by Anadarko between 1993 and 1998. The El Merk field is located approximately 300 km southeast of Hassi Messaoud in a remote area of the Algerian Sahara desert where the terrain consists of large interlocking sand dunes.
The development of these fields is the various responsibility of a joint association. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to this effect was signed in July 2005 by a consortium led by Sonatrach and Anadarko.
