CREATIVE LEARNING GUIDE Together, We feel the cold and place footsteps in the snow. We run through raindrops and sail across memories. We bustle and balance as highways unravel. And then, I see you.

보인다 I See You is a touching early-years theatre experience where sounds, images and sensations transform the mundane into dreamlike worlds - worlds where, despite our differences, our stories connect and liberate us. A collaboration between artists from Australia and Korea, this bilingual and interactive performance will inspire play, warm the heart, and set the imagination alight.

Inspired by children’s capacity to intuitively explore & generally accept the differences of others, 보인다 I See You begins when 3 displaced characters – Paper, Plastic & Rope – come together under strained, repressive circumstances.Against the odds of this difficult context, a playful process of sharing transpires. Fuelled by an insatiable curiosity & yearning for human connection, each character explores the other’s similarities & understands their differences, ultimately liberating themselves through playful collaboration. The playfulness of these exchanges resonate deeply with audiences as this performative & participatory experience of difference, negotiation & acceptance unfolds through a combination of image, movement, physical storytelling, object puppetry, all heightened by an immersive production and sound design.Without negating the cultural and gender identity of each performer, the characters’ unique differences will be invented through design & costume, with each embodying the attributes of their name-sake material, positioning ‘difference’ as an invented cultural concept. This reflects Imaginary Theatre’s research on how children understand & perceive others. Rather than focus on human differences, young children innately respond to what they see as the same - an instinct that as artists and adults we can find inspiration in. In this way, will affirm & privilege children’s instincts, perspectives & insights, and scaffold a dynamic intergenerational theatre experience.

ART FORM FOCUS:The Arts, SOSE and Health and Physical Education

KEY MESSAGES:How do we see and understand others?

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:Children could respond to this experience by reflecting and describing how the characters played, interacted and solved problems. This could be explored further through play-based drama workshops which encourage participants to solve real-life problems using paper, plastic and rope, the same 3 types of objects utilised in the performance.

Through viewing and reflecting 보인다 I See You, audiences will recognise and celebrate difference, thus encouraging children to connect with others and develop a broader understanding of the world.

LEARNING ACTIVIITES:LET’S TALKDiscuss how your child/children felt during the show.Examples:• What happened in the show?• Who were the characters in the performance? How were they

different? How do characters use their imagination to create new possibilities for themselves? Examples:

• What are our imaginations for? • How can we share our imaginations and ideas with others?LET’S CREATEWhat’s in the box?Create a space for children to explore. Within the space, include three large boxes with different fillings such as items made of:1. paper (e.g. Newspapers or paper bags)2. plastic (e.g. bubble wrap, plastic bags, cling wrap or cellophane)3. rope (e.g. string or large pieces of rope cut offs).Participants:• Explore the contents of the boxes one at a time.• Consider how the objects feel.Guide the participants through the experience by asking questions such as:• What do the objects feels like?• How could you use the items in the box?• How are you using the items in the box?• Can I join in?Repeat the activity with the remaining boxes.WHAT IS IT?Solving a problem with paper• Place small rolls of butcher’s paper around the room.• Allocate groups to sit around one roll of paper.• Give the group a problem. • Encourage participants to create a solution using the roll of paper.ExampleWinter is coming and Plastic is cold. What could we do to help Plastic?Solving a problem with plastic

• Fill a box with plastic bags.• Give participants a problem to solve using the objects in the box. • Encourage participants to create a solution using the items in the

home.EXPLORING SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCESSpot the difference• Find a partner. One player is A, the other is B.• Stand facing your partner. A has thirty seconds to observe

everything about B’s appearance. Try and remember everything about B.

• Player B turns their back to A, during this time, B needs to change something about their appearance.

ExamplePush down one sock. Tuck shirt in. Frown instead of smile.• Player B returns to face A. A tries to guess what is now different

about Player B.Alternately, complete this activity as a large group with 2-3 students selected to play the role of B.Using our differences• Discuss how we use our differences to help others.• Use the list of differences below to recall examples of how

differences can be used to solve problems.Example – big/small – tall/short – strong/weak – old/young

• Discuss an example of a time you used something different about you to help another.

• Draw a picture of you using your difference to help another.ExampleMy little brother was too small to reach a toy on his shelf. I am bigger and I used my long arms to reach the top shelf and pull his toy down for him. He was very happy.Celebrating differenceEvents• View pictures of different celebrations around the world.• Discuss how different cultures celebrate important events.
