Darshan Institute of Engineering & Technology 1 DIET e-Newsletter, September 2017 Educational Events Seminar on Concepts of Quality, Kaizen & Safety Management in Industries Seminar on Concepts on Quality, Kaizen & Safety Management in Industries was arranged by Department of Mechanical Engineering for final year students at the department on 11 Sept., 2017. Invited expert in the seminar was Mr. N. I. Parekh from GHCL Ltd., Sutrapada, Gujarat. He is presently working as GM and Head of Quality management, at GHCL. He is a lead auditor in QMS-quality management system, EMS-environment management system and OHSAS (Occupational Health Safety Assessment Series). During the seminar he covered various issues related to safety and quality management. He also discussed case studies on Kaizen which he supervised at GHCL and shared his experiences with the students. Expert Talk on Advance Trends In Foundry Technology Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an expert talk on Advance Trends in Foundry Technology on 18 Sept., 2017 for students of BE Sem. 7 at the department. Expert talk was delivered by Mr. C. M. Chug. He is head of the Foundry department in Jyoti CNC Automation Ltd., Rajkot and has experience of more than 45 years in this domain. During the session he discussed process of metal casting in detail along with allied issues. This covered discussion on various processes involved in foundry like pattern making, sand preparation, mould making, pouring, finishing etc. Different grades of metals and controlling metal composition was also discussed in the session.

Expert Talk on Role of Engineer in Power Plant

Department of Electrical Engineering organized an expert talk on Role of Engineer in Power Plant on 16 Sept., 2017 for students of BE Sem. 5 and 7 at the department. Invited experts were Mr. Rakesh Tiwari and Dr. Pratik Mehta, from Essar Power Ltd. Mr. Tiwari is Head of coal and ash handling department at Salaya unit of Essar Power, Jamnagar. He has experience of 30+ years in thermal Power plant. Dr. Mehta is Head of HSEF (Health, Safety, Environment and Fire) team also at Salaya unit. He has 29+ years of experience in Environmental management. In the

session experts started with a background of growth of power sector in India and overview of power plant. This was continued further in terms of deliberations on functioning of various units in thermal power plant like coal handling, ash handling, different operational cycles, ESP, laws regarding air pollution and role of engineers in all these.

Industrial Visit at Rupkala Gears and Kishan Auto parts Pvt. Ltd.

Students of BE Sem 3 at Department of Mechanical Engineering visited Rupkala Gears, Rajkot and Kishan Auto Parts Pvt. Ltd., Rajkot on 1 Sept., 2017. Rupkala gear manufactures different types of gears and gear boxes. Students were able to study operation of different highly sophisticated CNC machines related to vertical and horizontal machining, turning, milling, hobbing, precision face grinding and bore grinding. Students also visited their testing department.

Kishan Auto Parts Pvt. Ltd manufactures connecting rods. During the visit students had opportunity to seen latest machineries like VMC-400 CNC machine, 2 Spindle Automatic Torque Runner machine, Broach machines, 3D-CMM machine, Profile Projector , Crack Detection machine, etc. Students were also introduced with basics of manufacturing, production scheduling and quality control.

Industrial Visit at Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd., Kevadia

Students of BE Sem 7 Department of Electrical Engineering and BE Sem 5 Department of Mechanical Engineering visited Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd., Kevadia on 8 Sept., 2017. Sardar Sarovar Dam, as popularly known, is an exemplary project for all branches of engineering. During the visit students visited dam site and hydro power plant. Dam site has an installed capacity of 1200 MW in the downstream of the river and additional 250 MW on intake for the main canal. Its final configuration is the second largest concrete gravity dam (by volume) after Grand Coulee Dam in the US and has the world's third largest spillway discharging capacity. During the visit students got a chance to see the real working process of hydro power plant and gained knowledge about working of control room, turbine, Penstock, dam, water storage and generator.

Educational Visit at Muni Seva Ashram

Students of BE Sem 5 at Department of Mechanical Engineering visited Muni Seva Ashram, Goraj, Vadodara on 9 Sept., 2017. The Ashram in involved and have contributions towards integrated community welfare programs. They are active in various sectors like health care, education, family centers and training activities. Apart from this the Ashram is known for their efforts towards promoting the use of renewable energy. In this regards during the visit students were able to see use of solar flat plate collectors for water heating, use of Scheffler dishes and thermic oil for cooking daily meals of more than 600 people, 13 kW solar power plant for lighting needs at campus, Solar air-conditioning system, etc.

Frolic 2017 - State Level Annual Technical Symposium

Frolic is an Annual Technical Symposium organized by the Institute every year since year 2011. The aim behind organizing such technical event is to provide a platform for interested students to show case their skills, creativity and ingenuity along with a scope for knowledge sharing and interaction of ideas.

This year Frolic-2017 was organized on 2 Sept., 2017. It was a State level event approved by Gujarat Technological University and conducted in association with Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). The symposium had total 18 technical and 4 non-technical events covering all basic domains of engineering. The event received huge participation of 850+ students on the day On the eve of Frolic, i.e. on 1 Sept., 2017, Rangoli competition was held at the Institute where around 150+ students participated in teams. Creativity and sense of art demonstrated by students were highly impressive. Complete symposium was planned and organized by students co-ordinators under the guidance and supervision of faculties. Each department organized three main technical events that were minutely planned to test skills and inspire creativity. Some of the most popular events were TRUSSLEKTION from Department of Civil Engineering, Code-A-Thon from Department of Computer Engineering, Arduino Warrior from Department of Electrical Engineering, Bhagedu from Department of Mechanical Engineering. Apart from these non-technical events like LAN Party, and Treasure Hunt also remained popular among students. All student participants clearing qualifying round in each event were given certificate of participation and top three performers were awarded with cash prize.

Felicitation Ceremony – 2017 for Diploma Engineering

Every semester Institute felicitates meritorious students on basis of their performance in university examination. Total scholarship that is awarded annually to students of Degree and Diploma Institutes is close to Rs. 25 Lac. The intention behind awarding scholarship is to create an environment of healthy competition among students. Scholarship function of Diploma Institute for Summer 2017 examination result was organized by different departments in Sept. 2017. Function was honored by presence of leading personalities as chief guest and parents.

Teacher’s Day Celebration

Teacher’s day in India is celebrated on September 5, the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, an academic philosopher and India’s second President. The same was celebrated at the Institute on 5 Sept., 2017. 96+ students participated in Teacher’s day activities one of it being classroom teaching for peers and juniors. Students made great efforts in these activities and expressed thankfulness to their teachers.

Engineers’ day Celebration - Poster Exhibition cum Competition

September 15 in India is celebrated as Engineers’ day as a tribute to the greatest Engineer of the country Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. As a part of this celebration a poster exhibition cum competition was organized at the Institute. The theme of exhibition was to discuss problem and possible engineering solution to it in form of poster. Around 25 students participated in the event and made their sincere effort to represent creative ideas on posters. The exhibition was visited by number of students and faculties at the Institute. Top three ideas in the exhibition were also awarded. These were

Swachhta Abhiyan

Swachhta Abhiyan was carried out on 15 Sept., 2017 with a goal of promoting clean campus. Institute regularly organize such activities as a part of Swachh Bharat Mission for clean India. 60+ students and faculties participated in the program and actively took part in cleaning the campus. Because of such activities over the time a noticeable change has been observed at campus in terms of consciousness about clean campus.

Happiness Program by Art of Living

Happiness Program conducted by experts from Art of Living commune was organized at the Institute during 7-10 Sept., 2017. The program was conducted for a batch of 24 participants that included students and staff. Happiness program is a beginner level course that covers yoga, pranayama, concentration pranayama, sudarshan kriya and meditation. The program is very effective in improving mental and physical health.

Short Film Making Workshop

Film and music club is one of the active segments of Student Activity Center (SAC). Short film making workshop was organized by this club on 16 Sept., 2017 at the Institute. The workshop was conducted by Chintan Dangar and Hrushi Chavda (BE Sem. 3, CE). Both the students are active in this domain and professionally runs Vagabond Creative Films group. Workshop covered learning of video shoot, script writing, audio handling, etc. along with screening of good short films. Around 80+ students enthusiastically participated in the workshop.

Chess Zone Level Tournament

GTU Spirit 2017 is a University level sports festival. As a part of this, Chess tournament at Rajkot zone level was hosted by the Institute on 22 Sept. 2017. Total 78 students from 15 institutions of the zone participated in the tournament. Professional arbiter was invited as expert under whose supervision the tournament was held. Students exhibited lot of talent during the tournament. Winners in this zonal round will participate at inter-zonal level.

NCC Naval - Senior Division

NCC Unit–Senior Division (Naval Wing) has been awarded to the Institute with a student battalion of 50 cadets. The unit will work directly under Indian Naval Base Jamnagar. Selection of first batch of 20 cadets was arranged on 5 Sept., 2017. Selection process was divided in two rounds. The first round was on field to test physical fitness of candidates and the second was personal interview to test attitude and readiness for NCC activities. Selection round was open for boys and girls of 1st and 2nd year Degree and 1st year Diploma. Students showed great enthusiasm and interest in this activity and around 180+ students participated in the selection round. The whole selection process was conducted by 10 faculty co-ordinators and around 20 student co-ordinators.
