Edney Edition Term 2 Week 3 16 May 2019 The Edney Way - Respect and Excellence NAPLAN By the time this newsletter reaches your eyes, we would have completed half of all NAPLAN testing for Years 3 and 5, this year, for the first time, completed online. There have been reports in the media of disruption and technical difficulties, and this was beyond the control of the schools which had been affected. Fortunately, weve had a smooth run at Edney, with the students taking it in their stride, devices performing well, and the schools investments in innovation and technology paying dividends. The assessment program will be completed next week, and I acknowledge the excellent efforts of our students and staff thus far. THANKS P&C This morning, we were able to show off our amazing new sports shirts and uniforms which the P&C have funded to ensure that we look our best, are kept cool and comfortable and show that We are Edney in all interschool competitions, from football to athletics and everything in between. This is further evidence of the mammoth support of our parent community and the organisation that drives it all, the P&C. In this year, the school will receive about $40 000 worth of funds that directly impact the range and quality of opportunities and resources available to the children of Edney, and minimise the costs requested from parents throughout the year. Please, wherever, whenever and however you can, support our P&C. MAKING A DIFFERENCE Our Year 6 students each take on the challenge to make a change in their community, demonstrating and building their citizenship and giving back, whether at school, home, locally or on a global scale. Several of our students have initiatives underway supporting diverse causes and each making an impact in the world. I encourage all in our school community to in turn give support where you can, demonstrating the incredible power of Edney, and the positive influence that we can have and share. THANKS TO THE MAX Thank you to Year 4 student, Max Whisson who nominated our school for a special grant from Endeavour Mutual Bank. His winning entry sees Edney receive $500 to put towards our Science and Technology programs. From the Principals Desk OUR OWN LEGO MASTERS With the ongoing and breathtaking support of the Forrestfield and High Wycombe Community Branches of the Bendigo Bank, we have received a $5000 donation to support our school technology and engineering, along with Lego Technic Kits and the opportunity to participate in the Lego First League Robotics Competition later this year (Google Lego League to see – its amazing). Our local bank branches have put $2 million back into our local communities, including over $50 000 to Edney Primary School over the past 5 years, supporting our students and cementing an enduring partnership as leaders of innovation. DISCO Its just two weeks until our Disco, to be held on Thursday 30 th May. Dont forget to pre-order your tickets. Hot dogs, food, drink and glow sticks are available on the night (no need to pre-order these, lots of yummy and glowy treats, starting from $1 each). All proceeds support the Year 6 Graduation. SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY Parents and students are reminded that the school is holding a Development Day on Friday 31 st May. Students do not attend on this day. The school development day will be followed by the WA Day Public holiday on Monday 3 rd June, with students returning to school on Tuesday 4 th June. COLOUR RUN Its back! On Friday 14 th June the school will be awash in colour, as all students participate in the ultimate fun run. Sponsorship packs and information will be on the way home shortly, with all sponsorship leading to funds for our P&C to invest in our school and children, as well as the opportunity for each child to earn prizes. It would be a good time to start looking out for inexpensive, recycled, or old white clothing as students and staff are encouraged to dress white – well add the colour. 17th Kindergarten Gold attend 24th Kindergarten Red and Blue attend 30th Assembly Room 3 Newsletter Disco 31st School Development Day - Students do not attend 3rd Public Holiday 7th Kindergarten Red and Blue attend Year 6 Transition Day - Kalamunda SHS 10th Year 5/6 Adventure Day 11th Year 5/6 Adventure Day 13th Assembly Room 10 Newsletter 14th Colour Run Upcoming Events May 2019 June 2019

Scholastic Books Thank you to everyone that has ordered from the latest Book Club issue. Every May during National Family Reading Month, Scholastic holds an exciting reading challenge as part of the celebration. Research shows that family reading time is one of the BEST ways to grow a child’s interest in the wonderful world of books. Kids who read, succeed! If you are interested in being part of a reading challenge, go check out scholastic.com.au/nfrm. There are $10 000 worth of prizes to be won!

DONATIONS FOR KING EDWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL I am doing my Citizenship Award Project on KEMH, specifically, newborn babies. There are a lot of disadvantaged newborns born there every day and they need our help! Especially with donations of: newborn nappies, singlets sizes 0000/000 (new) and newborn clothing sizes 0000/000 (new). The volunteers at KEMH make up “Baby Bundles”.

If the families of Edney can help with these items, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be left at the front office up until the end of Term Two. Thank you for your help. Grace Calleja, Room 3, Year 6.

Woolworths Earn and Learn The Woolworths Earn & Learn program gives schools and Early Learning Centres around Australia the chance to earn amazing school equipment. Collect your stickers from your local Woolworths stores between the 1st May and 25th June 2019.

Place your stickers in the specially marked box located at Forrestfield Woolworths, 20 Strelitzia Avenue, Forrestfield or bring your individual stickers or your sticker sheet to the Edney Primary School office or there is a specially marked box located in the school library.

This year has been an exciting intro with the Pre-Primary students joining in with the music program, learning about rhythm and moving their bodies to the beat. The Year 1 to 4 students had an introduction to the Orchestra and tried out or heard the sound of lots of different instruments. The Year 5 and 6 students have just started the term with Ukulele lessons and are coming on in leaps and bounds.

Thank you to all the parents who helped at the Mother’s Day stall. This is always a hit with our Edney children, it gives them so much joy to be able to purchase something for that special someone in their life. Congratulations to our winners 1st prize Alyssa Tennant, 2nd prize Grace Hope and 3rd prize Monique Barker. We hope all of our mothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Election BBQ This week on Saturday we will be hosting the Election BBQ. Community News

Here are activities our community has been talking about.

P&C News

If you can wield tongs like a professional or are fluent in the art of EFTPOS then please email [email protected] or click on the Facebook page Edney Primary School Parents 2019, all the details are available there. Bring a couple of friends, the more the merrier. In other news, at our last 2 meetings we haven't had enough members to be able to pass any votes that would be beneficial to our children. This is unheard of for our P&C. It would make us very sad if we weren't able to allocate money so that you the parent would benefit from subsidised costs. Every parent wants to save money, so please help us out and attend a meeting and volunteer an hour or two. The work isn't complicated and you might have some fun meeting other Edney parents. We look forward to Saturday, plant collecting will be going on from the Rec centre next door, and we will be enticing them to the best ever Edney sausage sizzle and bacon and egg rolls.

Fast Edney’s Canteen News The new Winter menu is available from the school app or the canteen, please come in and see me if you have any questions about the menu. For recess try a nice warm cup of noodles for $1.50 each, make sure you get one by ordering it in the morning. I am always looking for new ideas for specials or any menu items that your family would love to see available at the canteen, again please come in and say hello and discuss your ideas with me, and maybe volunteer a few hours. Kind regards Jan Cresswell Canteen Supervisor
