Bestene Solvent and Thinner–a UsefulProduct for StampCollectorsRecently, members of the Edmonton Stamp

Club were provided with a handout pertaining tochemicals and stamps, which contains severalarticles that mention Bestene and how to use it toremove self-adhesive glue from stamps. In thearticle, “Saga of ‘soaking’ self-adhesivecontinues,” author Peter Butler describes theprocedure he uses:

“First, trim the envelope close to the[self-adhesive] stamp, turn it over and usingan eyedropper, squeeze a small amount of the liquid onto the papersurface. It quickly moistens the entire piece of paper and within tenseconds you are able to peel the stamp away from the paper. Next, Iplaced the stamp face down on newspaper and left it to dry. There isa small residue of gum that remains on the stamp long after theliquid has been evaporated. I then dusted the stamp with talc [babypowder is said to work] and amazingly, the stickiness disappeared.”

[It has also been said that adding another drop of Bestene directly ontothe back of the stamp usually removes the remaining glue that is still onthe stamp. Any stickiness that still remains is easily removed with a verysmall pinch of talc or baby powder.]

Personally, I was able to remove scotch tape that had completelycovered one of Canada’s recent Olympic stamps. It required severaldrops of Bestene to do the job. Also, because I was a bit impatient, a tinyspeck of the stamp was pulled off when I removed the tape because thesolvent had not yet reacted with that bit of tape on the stamp. Theeyedropper I used was from a bottle of Schultz liquid plant food–and, ofcourse, I thoroughly rinsed out the eyedropper before and after using itwith the Bestene solvent. With regard to removing ink scribbled on astamp, I was able to fade the ink but I was not able to remove itcompletely from a stamp, paper or cloth. The good news is that Bestenedoes not appear to erase or fade postmarks.

The following is a description of the use of Bestene that I foundwhen googling “Bestene Solvent and Thinner” on my computer:

Volume 99, Number 4 E.S.C. BULLETIN 7

“Formulated for thinning rubber cement, Bestene is also a mostversatile cleaner. Bestene readily cleans up inks, spray adhesive, andis an exceptional parts cleaner. Over the years, professionals haveused Bestene for removing both decals and labels from all types ofsurfaces. But most important, Bestene does not dissolve mostplastics. It is available in 4, 8, 16 and 32 ounce containers as well as1, 5 and 55 gallon containers.”

A can of Bestene comes with very serious warnings.“Danger: extremely flammable. Harmful or fatal if swallowed.

Vapor harmful. Contains n-heptane.” “Precautions: Avoid contactwith heat, sparks and open flame. Vapors can ignite explosively. Ifusing indoors, turn off all [or at least nearby] pilot lights. Use onlywith adequate ventilation.”Obviously, it would be prudent to avoid lighting a cigarette or

smoking while using this solvent. In Edmonton, Bestene can be purchased at Colours Art Supplies. I

purchased a 16-ounce can ($17.95) at Colours, located at 7371-104Street, Edmonton. There is another Colours store at 10104-149 Street. The third Colours store (formerly Nordraft) is located at 10660-105Street. (Delta Art and Drafting Supply no longer carries Bestene.)

Sunshine & Roses

The Naming and Location of theMillward, Alberta, Post Officeby R. Parama

Millward was a very small post office located about 42 miles west of

the centre of Calgary. It was a very early Alberta office, opening on May1 1995 when Alberta was a District. It closed on October 31 1906. Itst st

was never a significant post office. For example, its revenue in 1895 wasa mere $44.00, yet the post office salary was $20.00. Even worse, thecost of the mail contract was $100.00 fo the year ending March 31 ,st

1895, so as a whole, it was hardly paying its way. Luckily, despite itssmall volume of mail, several covers from this post office have survived.Just about all of them are to a Mrs. N. Burwash in Toronto. A few areknown mailed to the Burwash family at Millward. A typical cover fromMillward is shown in Figure 1.

Fig. 1. Millward AB postmark JA 1/ 01 (January 1 , 1901). The separatest

grid killer was sometimes used at this office to cancel the adhesives.

Sometimes the date stamp cancels the stamp also.)

Volume 99, Number 4 E.S.C. BULLETIN 9

Most philatelic sources suggest that the name of Millward hadsomething to do with a saw or lumber mill. Though the sources do notstate where this notion came from, I suspect it may come from amisinterpretation of its location. Early references to its purportedlocation were given by Wilding and Campbell at 24-26-07-W5 atopening. This places the office about six miles due north of Morleyrailway station, some four miles north of the Bow River and in a heavilyforested area. Further, it seems some have assumed that Morley postoffice was the site of the Morley Mission, so Millward was assumed tohave no direct connection with the Morley Mission. This perhaps iswhere the notion of a sawmill comes from. In 1885 the quoted section ofland was in an unsurveyed area. The currently online ArchiviaNet listingfor Millward does not offer a location for Millward. Curiously, it seemsthat there is no location given for Millward in any of the Postal Guidesfrom 1886 to at least 1903.

However a very strong clue as to the origin of the name can befound in the list of postmasters for Millward. They include Miss RuthMcDougall, Miss Lizzie McDougall and David McDougall.Furthermore, the mail contractor in 1892, 1895 and 1899 was JohnMcDougall. It seems the contractor was none other than Rev. JohnMcDougall; and David, his brother, ran the trading post. The names areall members of the famous McDougall family. The father of John andDavid was Rev. George Millward McDougall, and there seems to belittle doubt that the post office was named in honor of Rev. GeorgeMcDougall, who had died on a buffalo hunt just northeast of Calgary in1876.

The correct location of this post office also confirms this notion, butfinding this position takes a little detective work. John McDougall’smail contract between Millward and the Morley post office was for aspecified distance of 3 miles. This is well short of the reported locationof Millward of 24-26-07-W5. The cover in Figure 1 did pass through theMorley post office the same day, as shown on the back (Figure 2). Anexamination of some early sketches of McDougall’s mission and earlymaps solved the mystery.

Early sketches of the McDougall mission clearly show it on the westbank of Jacob’s Creek just where it flows into the Bow River. TheMcDougalls established their mission at this point and called itMorleyville. It turns out that this point is 3 miles from Morley Station onthe CPR. When the CPR established a station here, they simplified thename to Morley. The Millward post office opened in the MorleyvilleMission and at first mail was dropped at the station. Morley did not get a

10 E.S.C. BULLETIN Volume 99, Number 4

post office until October 15 , 1888. To complicate matters, in later yearsth

David McDougall built another trading post near the community ofMorley, so David McDougall’s post became associated with Morley.

were the days of service!

Morleyville Mission andits post office were never located on a regular section of land delineatedby the Prairie Grid system. Instead, it was located at the edge of the

Fig. 3 The locations of both Millward and Morley post offices in 1893. In

this map, named localities nest to a solid black dot are post offices.

Morley is clearly seen on the CPR. Millward is just above the Bow River

and along Jacob Creek. Notice that Millward is just on the border of the

Stoney I.R. and Lot 1. The “lots” are present in similar maps dating into

the 1920's. [cut from Sectional Map, Morley Sheet, dated April 23 1893].rd

Stoney Reserve and next to the Lot system, similar to that used byFrench Canadians and Métis in a few other places in Alberta. An extractfrom a Sectional Map from 1893 is shown in Figure 3. This map, available online, also confirms the locations of Morley and Millwardpost offices.

If one extrapolates the north-south line between townships 26-06-W5 and 26-07-W5 one would find Millward very close to that line. Myestimation places Millward at 06-26-06-W5.

It seems that Millward then was named in honor of Rev. GeorgeMillward McDougall and was located in “Morleyville”. However, theMillward post office had left one minor mystery...who exactly was thefirst postmaster Ruth McDougall? I have tried to determine this from themany available sources on the McDougall family, but I have neverfound a clear answer. This is perhaps another story.

The good, the bad and the uglySometimes you get good stamps in the mail. Several auctioneers send

their catalogues with really great stamps on them. Here is an example ofwhat goes wrong all too often. In one day I received these covers fromthree auctioneers. I’m naming the covers after the movie, The Good, theBad and the Ugly. But they all started with the best of intentions: gettinggreat stamps used on cover.

I can’t collect them and I can’t put these in the club auction either. They get recycled. Perhaps in their next lives they will come back ashigh value definitives, stamps that people like such as Machin heads, orsome of those great looking U.S. Express Mail stamps. I’m glad thisdoesn’t happen too often, but when it does, man, is it ever noticeable! Iwill, however, joyfully mount my Opal booklet from Canada’s fabulouscentennial stamps.

May all of you receive great stamps in the mail, and if you do gethand scribbled cancels, that the cheap ones get the Crayola, and the goodones get the real cancels.

Happy collecting. Ed Dykstra

Library DisplayThanks to the good folks at the Edmonton Public Library and the

energy of our Club members, we had a very nice display in the MainBranch (Stanley Milner Branch) throughout the month of March, whichcoincided with our spring show. We used the opportunity to publicizethe fact that 2010 marked the 50 anniversary of ESC public stampth

shows, and were able to illustrate this using material from the Club’svaults from way back in 1961. We also put in some stamp materialdemonstrating what else was happening in the stamp world at that time.

This is good publicity for the club, and we’re grateful to LloydLoewen, Deirdre McKay and Keith Spencer for providing material, andto Nino Chiovelli and Deirdre McKay for artful arrangement of thedisplay.

How to Destroy a CollectionSeveral years ago, I bought at auction a box containing old albums with

stamps. Upon examination, I saw that almost all the stamps had novalue, as most were in very poor condition. In a couple of the albums, allthe stamps had been mounted with home-made hinges that were glued, and indeed some of the hinges were also glued to the stamps. I thoughtthat if this lot went cheaply, I would buy it. Everyone else seemed to feelthe same way, so I was able to purchase it for $3.

Once I had the lot home and under closer examination, I noticed thatfive of the nine albums dated from 1921-1929. I carefully removed thestamps from the albums, which of course left an ugly blotch on the paperwhere each had been glued. The other four albums, more modern, wentdirectly into the recycle bin. I did not find any stamps that were worthkeeping.

I then sold the five older albums in auction as one lot. Surprise, surprise, the lot sold for $22.50, so I assume the buyer collected earlyalbums.

I spent a few hours on a project that seemed futile but that for somestrange reason I enjoyed. Besides, this is now a fine example of how notto handle your stamps!

Address advisory: I ordered books from Amazon. The parcel got as faras the Mississauga parcel plant, where it was determined to be“Undeliverable” and returned to Amazon. What was wrong with theaddress? It was the same one I’ve had since 1991, but I had omitted the“NW” designation! A.M.
