Youth Camp!

This camp provided an opportunity for the youth to enhance

their understanding about their future, be conscious of their

society and get deep knowledge of the overall importance

of development. They went through various interesting

activities to further make the camp more interactive and

easy to comprehend.

Miss Shamsunisa, Miss Nasim Bano, Miss Hashima Bibi and

Miss Malikah Farah, Senior Boarders of YDC Girls Gilgit who

recently attended the “Youth Quest Camp” organized by

Aga Khan Social Welfare Pakistan, organized a similar camp

for the YDC girls at Gilgit.

The objective of the Camp was to make these young girls

realize the role and identity of youth in the society. This

would help them in bringing a positive change in their

attitude by adopting the key messages learnt from the camp

particularly from the youth development.

ceased and he couldn't even pay the house rent due to

which he got a notification to vacate the house. Although he

managed to get his son treated but couldn't afford his

medication.

After facing all these problems, he approached Hashoo

Foundation, who sent their Social Welfare team to assess his

situation. The team as an emergency relief provided him

with Rs. 15,000/- for paying off his pending rent and re-

admitting his son to school. They also paid Rs. 3,000/- per

month for his son's medicines.

Hashoo Foundation has always believed in self-sustainable

initiatives, having said that and keeping his expertise in

mind, they developed a business plan for him. He was

suggested to restart his business with more stock, the initial

investment was provided by the Foundation. Currently,

Abd-ur-Rehman is running a smooth business, paying his

household expenses and children's fee. Upon a follow-up

visit he annotated:

“My domestic conditions wretched me to strive for two

times meal. I remember the disgraceful behavior of the

house owner with my family. None of my relatives ever

cared to ask about my misery but HF came with a ray of

hope. They assisted me more than my expectations. I

got my shelter back, my children are now going to

school. My family and I will be thankful to HF for our

entire life. I believe humanitarianism is alive even

today.”

Mr. Abd-ur-Rehman, the breadwinner – and the sole

financial provider of a family of 5. Life was a challenge for

him especially in these hard and trying times, where paying

off the utility bills was a huge task, apart from the other

household expenses he had to bear. To make ends meet,

Abd-ur- Rehman set up a cart full of children's garments and

roamed around streets. This small scale business would

barely pay off his house rent and one time meal, conditions

sometimes worsened to an extent wherehis family couldn't

even have that one time meal, and ultimately the neighbors

would support them. Due to the financial crisis, his son got

dropped out from school, to add to his worries, his elder

son, aged 15 gotexposed to GBV, a lethal disease that causes

paralysis. This disease needed long term treatment in order

to recover fully, Abdu-ur-Rehman, who was already

struggling with money, had to sell off his cart and get his

child treated. Consequently, his sole income source was

10 MOST NUTRITIOUS FOODS!

Avocados

Beans

Broccoli

Dark Chocolate

Despite their fat, or actually because of it, avocados can

lower your cholesterol. Researchers find that replacing just

five percent of your calories from saturated fat (think butter

or cheese) with monounsaturated fat - the kind in avocados

- could slash the risk of heart attack by more than a third

Beans are in fact good for your heart, thanks in large part to

their soluble fibre, which soaks up cholesterol so the body

can dispose of it before it can stick to artery walls.

The antioxidant plant pigments that make blueberries blue -

flavonoids called anthocyanins - guard against heart

disease, cancer and age-related blindness and memory loss.

Consider broccoli your number one cancer fighter, thanks to

its sulfur compounds, such as sulforaphane, which you can

smell as broccoli cooks. These compounds signal our genes

to boost production of enzymes that detoxify potentially

cancer-causing compounds. Eat more broccoli, and you

could slash your risk of everything from breast and lung

cancer to stomach and colon cancer by as much as half.

Dark chocolate contains hefty amounts of disease-fighting

flavonoids, antioxidants also found in many fruits and

vegetables. In fact, it appears to have more flavonoids than

any other food. Studies find its antioxidants can improve

blood pressure, prevent blood clots, slow the oxidation of

LDL cholesterol (making it less likely to stick to artery walls),

and reduce inflammation.

Flaxseed

Garlic

Salmon

Spinach

A tablespoon of ground flaxseed sprinkled over cereal or

yogurt provides an easy 2.3 grams of fibre, often more than

what's in the cereal itself! But flaxseed is most revered for its

lignans. These act like estrogen in the body, blocking

estrogen receptors on cells and contributing to reduced

rates of certain hormone-related cancers, such as breast

cancer. Flaxseed is also a fantastic source of alpha-linolenic

acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid the body uses to make

omega-3 fatty acids.

More health benefits have been ascribed to garlic than to

just about any other food - and some of them even hold

true. Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral

properties; it even appears to banish some antibiotic-

resistant bacteria, at least in test tubes. Most of its disease-

fighting potential comes from its sulfur compounds, which

act as antioxidants, providing many of its cardiovascular

benefits.

The fat in salmon is like liquid gold when it comes to your

blood vessels. Just two servings of salmon a week can

reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 17

percent and your risk of having a heart attack by 27 percent.

In addition to protecting your eyes from age-related

macular degeneration, thanks to its carotenoids, spinach

has high concentrations of vitamin K, which can help

maintain bone density and prevent fractures. The green

stuff is also a powerful source of potassium and magnesium

as well as folate, all of which can keep blood pressure low,

reducing the risk of stroke
