The way of living of the Saurashtrian menresembles to that of Iyengar Brahmins and the living ofSaurashtrian women resembles to that of TeluguBrahmins.

Saurashtrian men wear dhoti or veshti with a shirtand scarf called khesa just like other Brahmin men. Themen keep the hair-knot or sikha on the head with avermilion mark or naamam on their forehead.

The Saurashtrian women wear saree in adifferent manner than the Tamil women. The unmarriedones wear in Bengali style, while the married ones wearin Marathi style. The shape and size of the ornamentsworn by the Saurashtrian women are similar to that ofTelugu Brahmin women. The ornaments are mostlymade of precious diamonds and gold. The women alsoput vermilion mark on their foreheads just like the malesbut in smaller length and also decorate their head withflowers called as veni.

The Saurashtrian cuisine is famous for its mixedrice dishes that includes puliyotharai (tamarind rice),tomato rice with a hint of cinnamon, kalkandu (sugarcandy) rice, sakkarai pongal (a dessert made of cottonseed milk) and lemon rice. Apart from these dishesSaurashtrians have special liking towards halva andpoli. Other South Indian delicacies such as dosas, idliand sambar etc. are also favored by the Saurashtrians.Several historians believe that it was Saurashtriantextile merchants who introduced idly to South Indiaduring the 10th and 12th centuries. There are evenclaims that a mix of rice and urad dal ground togetherand later steamed to form cakes had its origins inGujarat. This was called Iddada. Another dish that theSaurashtrian traders brought to Madurai in the 16thcentury is a vada made from deep-fried spinach, itbecame the keerai vadai and remains a specialty ofMadurai.

Traditionally, Saurashtrians are vegetarian andthose who are involved in priesthood activities adhere tostrict vegetarianism. Rice is their staple food along withsambar, gojju - amti, rasam. However, nowadays, someoccasionally take non-vegetarian food.

There are three group of Saurashtrians living inTamil Nadu. First migrants came to Salem and settledthere, second group of migrants settled in Thanjavurand its surrounding places and later third group ofmigrants settled in Madurai and its surrounding places.

THE SAURASHTRA PEOPLESaurashtrians maintain a predominant presence inMadurai, a city, also known as 'Temple City' in thesouthern part of Tamil Nadu. Though official figures arehard to come by, it is believed that the Saurashtrianpopulation is anywhere between one-fourth and one-fifth of the city's total population.

They are present in significant numbers inAmbur,Ammapettai, Ammayappan, Aranthangi, Arni,Ayyampettai, Bhuvanagiri, Chennai, Dharasuram,Dindigul, Erode, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari,Karaikudi, Kottar, Krishnapuram, Kumbakonam,Namakkal, Nilakottai, Palani, Palayamkottai,Paramakudi, Parambur, Periyakulam, Puducherry,Pudukkottai, Rajapalayam, Ramanathapuram, Salem,Thanjavur, Thirubhuvanam, Thiruvaiyaru, Thiruvarur,Thuvarankurichi, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Illuppur,Thiruvappur, Trichy, Vaniyambadi, Veeravanallur,Vellanguli, Pudukudi, Kilakukulam, Krishnapuram,Vellore, Walajapet in Tamil Nadu.

The mother tongue of Saurashtrians isSaurashtra (alternate names and spellings: Sourashtra,Sowrashtra, Sourashtri, Palkar), a dialect of Gujaratiwith the amalgamation of present-day Sanskrit, Hindi,Marathi, Konkani, Kannada, Telugu & Tamil but all ofthem are bilingual[14] and can speak either Tamil orTelugu or one of the local languages.

The prominent leaders among the communityarose in the late 19th century and felt the need oforganizing the community. At first, the MaduraiSaurashtra Sabha was formed in the year 1895 and itwas formally registered in the year 1900 with many

objectives. The formation of thisSabha was the first step towardssocial mobilization. The Sabha'sadministration is carried out by electedCouncillors and office bearers. It hasits own rules and regulationsregarding holding of elections, rightsand duties of office bearers andcelebration of social functions. Theelection to the Sabha is held once inthree years. The social life of theSaurashtrians is controlled almostwholly by the Saurashtra Sabha.

This organisation is a committee of the leadingmen of the community, which manages and controls allthe schools and public institutions, the temple and itsworship, and all political, religious, and social questionsamong the Saurashtrians.

The Saurashtra Madhya (central) Sabha, whichhas its headquarters at Madurai now remains as thecultural center for all the Saurashtrians living in TamilNadu. Many well-to-do merchants and philanthropists ofthe community have contributed substantially to thegrowth of these institutions. Today, the Saurashtriansare represented in white collar jobs and professions inlarge numbers.

In 2009, Narendra Modi, the then Chief Ministerof Gujarat and the current and 14th Prime Minister ofIndia, inaugurated the Research Institute of SaurashtraHeritage and Immigration (RISHI), a project inassociation with Saurashtra University, Rajkot.

In the second decade of 20th century, theSaurashtrians emerged as a dominant group in socialand political life of Madras Presidency. TheSaurashtrians emerged as the dominant social groupbecause of their collective mobilization, intellectualleadership, education, wealth, trade and enterprise. There are several instances when the leaders of thecommunity organised the weavers and made social andeconomic protests. The well-to-do merchants of thecommunity made donations to TNCC for SaltSatyagraha and welcomed any form of Swadeshiagitation which favoured Indian cloth.

The leaders who came to lead the communitywere not always from the upper class. L. K. Thulasiram, who led the community in Madurai, was not born into thearistocratic family. With his own efforts he travelledabroad which brought prosperity to himself and to the

Politics

community in general. Thulasiram at first supported thenon-Brahmin movement in Tamil Nadu. When heearned the displeasure of his community members whowere fighting for Brahminical status, he changed hismind and supported the cause of his own people. He gotelected as Municipal Chairman in 1921 amidst a fiercecontest. During his tenure he brought many reformswithin the community. He introduced free mid-day mealscheme in community owned school for the first time inthe country which was later emulated by theGovernment of Tamil Nadu during the period ofK. Kamaraj in the name of noon-meal scheme inGovernment schools. When he lost his hold in MunicipalCouncil, he became a prominent organizer of non-cooperation movement.

Later he impressed the Congress Party andbecame the leader of the merchants. In this capacity hestrove hard to raise the prestige and position of hiscommunity.

N.M.R. Subbaraman, another leader of thecommunity, financed and led the Civil DisobedienceMovement In Madurai from 1930-32. He worked for theadvancement of the depressed classes.

He, along with A. Vaidyanatha Iyer, organised atemple entry conference and helped the people of thedepressed classes to enter Meenakshi Amman Temple. He was involved in the Bhoodan movement anddonated his 100 acres of land to the movement. Hecontributed to establishing the first Gandhi MemorialMuseum in Madurai. Later he expressed hisdissatisfaction with Civil Disobedience. He felt unhappyabout the expenditure incurred on the agitationalactivities. He mobilized his followers into Municipalpolitics with the help of Venkatamarama Iyer factionunder the Congress banner.

If a person bathing in rain waterprobably has a cold and a fever, he isnot healthy, so it means that they causehealth.

There is too much prana in cleanrain water. Many people get colds whenthey get wet in the rain. Sneezingcomes, fever comes.

This is why there is so much prana in the rainwater that all the cells in our body start to absorb thatprana.

The body excretes waste products that haveaccumulated over many days and years throughsneezing, runny nose and runny nose. How to find out ifa man is healthy or not, if he gets wet in the rain, he doesnot get cold and fever means he is healthy.

So, there is no need to be afraid of getting wet inthe rain. Be brave.

Our body does good. It is a medicine. So whoeverhas any disease can cover the body to cure by soakingin the rain. Drinking rainwater can also increase theprana energy in our body.

Do not drink that water for the first one to fiveminutes when it rains. Because dust, debris, and debrisfrom vehicles are in the air.

In the first 5 minutes the rainwater will come to theearth by picking up the dust and debris so we should notdrink the rainwater that comes in the first 5 minutes, therainwater that comes after 5 minutes should be caughteither directly through the vessel or using a vessel.Maybe if the roof of our house is clean we can catch therainwater coming from the roof.

THE RAINThis water is the cleanest pure

water in the world. There is a lot ofprana in it. If this water is sealed in aconta iner or bot t le and keptsomewhere in the house withoutsunlight, the water will not spoil for sixyears. But if the water is exposed tosunlight, worms and insects will comein and spoil the water in 24 hours.

So protect rainwater from sunlight when we drinkit. Our body gets all the prana it needs, all the diseases inour body are cured and our body attains health. Therefore, we will use rainwater prana. We should notchase away children saying it is a crime to soak in therain.

Soaking in the rain is a wonderful, wonderful,happy-go-lucky, great show. Even healthier. So you cansoak in it when it rains anymore. Good. It is good to drinkrainwater. Rainwater prana is a wonderful medicine.

So let us now add water prana to our lives. Wateris not normal. Vital energy, water prana, prana in waterwe use the right way to live a healthy life. Let everyoneknow that a traditional lifestyle is essential for a healthylife ...!
