Leadership Reflection Anger and Control: a short story Once upon a time there was a little boy who was talented, creative, handsome, and extremely bright. He was a natural leader. The kind of person everyone would normally have wanted on their team or project. But he was also self-centered and had a very bad temper. When he got angry, he usually said, and often did, some very hurtful things. In fact, he seemed to have little regard for those around him. Even friends. So, naturally, he had few. “But,” he told himself, “that just shows how stupid most people are!” As he grew, his parents became concerned about this personality flaw, and pondered long and hard about what they should do. Finally, the father had an idea. And he struck a bargain with his son. He gave him a bag of nails, and a BIG hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper,” he told the boy, “I want you to really let it out. Just take a nail and drive it into the oak boards of that old fence out back. Hit that nail as hard as you can!” Of course, those weathered oak boards in that old fence were almost as tough as iron, and the hammer was mighty heavy, so it wasn’t nearly as easy as it first sounded. Nevertheless, by the end of the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence (That was one angry young man!). Gradually, over a period of weeks, the number dwindled down. Holding his temper proved to be easier than driving nails into the fence! Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He felt mighty proud as he told his parents about that accomplishment. “As a sign of your success,” his father responded, “you get to PULL OUT one nail. In fact, you can do that each day that you don’t lose your temper even once.” Well, many weeks passed. Finally one day the young boy was able to report proudly that all the nails were gone. At that point, the father asked his son to walk out back with him and take one more good look at the fence. “You have done well, my son,” he said. “But I want you to notice the holes that are left. No matter what happens from now on, this fence will never be the same. Saying or doing hurtful things in anger produces the same kind of result. There will always be a scar. It won’t matter how many times you say you’re sorry, or how many years pass, the scar will still be there. And a verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. People are much more valuable than an old fence. They make us smile. They help us succeed. Some will even become friends who share our joys, and support us through bad times. And, if they trust us, they will also open their hearts to us. That means we need to treat everyone with love and respect. We need to prevent as many of those scars as we can.” Michael Falkiner, Deputy Principal Students & Organisation From the Principal Vale Mick Maher Our thoughts and prayers are with Sacred Heart Primary Principal, Paul Maher, whose Father, Mick, passed away last week at the age of 84. from all the different sub-committees who reported on the year’s activities. The P & F distributed $65,000 to the two schools last year, which is an amazing effort. In addition, they conducted a number of great social gatherings for parents and friends of the two schools. Many thanks to those members who concluded their term of service on the P & F Executive and welcome to the new members who were duly elected. A summary of the changes to the Executive will appear in the next edition of the newsletter. Caritas Fundraiser The Faith and Ministry Team, along with the SRC, held a casual clothes BBQ lunch fundraiser on St Patrick’s Day, March 17. The funds raised will support the great work that Caritas does in developing countries around the world. Progress Reports Families will be receiving progress reports during the first week of the holidays. The reports will be posted home and will arrive during the first week of the holidays. The report folder will contain an online booking form for parents to make bookings to meet with subject teachers on the afternoon of the following days, April 20th 23rd, 27th and 30th. Modified Triathlon It was great to see the level of enthusiasm and participation by our Year 10 PE students last week as they participated in a modified triathlon at Lake Mulwala. Students competed as individuals or in teams completing the kayaking, running and cycling legs. There were some great individual and team efforts on the day. The cyclists, in particular, had to deal with a very stiff headwind on the final leg. The event served as a good warm up for the Splash ‘n Dash that was held on the weekend. Here are some photos .

Final day of term A reminder to families that the school term will finish for students at 3.10 pm on Thursday, March 26. Friday, March 27 is a staff professional development day for both Sacred Heart schools. Staff will be undertaking the Level 2 First Aid course. Lew  Nagle,    Principal

Organisation and Administration Head lice Please ensure that you check your child’s hair for both lice and eggs. Any child with head lice should be treated. No treatment kills all the eggs, so treatment must involve two applications seven days apart and all eggs should be removed. Lice can crawl and hide. The easiest and most effective way to find them is to follow these steps.

1. Comb any type of hair conditioner onto dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This stuns the lice and makes it difficult for them to grip the hair or crawl around.

2. Now comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth, head lice comb.

3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue.

4. Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs.

5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times.

If lice or eggs are found, the child’s hair should be treated. Your attention to this matter is very much appreciated. College offices On Friday, March 27, the offices in both Wexford Campus and Kennedy Campus will be closed from 11.00 am. This is due to staff training. Visitors on campus A  reminder to all visitors to either Wexford Campus, (Witt Street), or Kennedy Campus, (Coghill Street), that you must report to the front administration office in either campus. You can then sign in or wait at the office while the person you wish to meet, or collect, is then called to the respective office. Under no circumstances are visitors permitted on school grounds unless directed by a staff member. Sacred Heart College office hours Kennedy Campus: 8.30 am – 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday. 8.30 am – 4.00 pm Friday. Wexford Campus: 8.00 am – 4.00 pm Monday to Thursday. 8.00 am – 3.30 pm Friday.    Absentees Parents and guardians are required to notify the College of any student absentees either by contacting the College on (03) 5742 1300 or email [email protected]. Students signing in when late to school Students, please go to the office in your Campus if you arrive late for school. You should have a written note from your parent/guardian explaining why you are late and this must be given to either Mrs Haynes (Wexford Campus) or Mrs Brown (Kennedy Campus) as soon as you arrive at school. You will then be given a Late Pass, which you will give to your teacher when you go into class. Students leaving school early If you are leaving school early for appointments, etc., please bring a written note from your parent/guardian advising you need to leave school early, and give it to either Mrs Haynes or Mrs Brown as soon as you arrive at school. They will then give you a Leave Pass, which you keep until you are about to leave school for the day. You will then show the Leave Pass to the teacher in whose class you are leaving and you will be allowed to leave class early. Newsletter items If you have any items to include in our Community notices section, please contact the College or email Barb Wallace at [email protected]

2015 Yarrawonga Mulwala Splash ‘n Dash report More than 600 competitors participated in the 2015 Yarrawonga Mulwala Splash ‘n Dash last weekend. Once again we would like to thank the valuable team of volunteers without whom this event could not go ahead. Your time and assistance every year is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to the students and teachers of Sacred Heart College who participated in the run or the swim. Thank you for supporting this important fundraiser and we look forward to seeing you again next year. On Saturday, 97 swimmers competed in 1.4km State to State swim from the Yarrawonga Foreshore to the Mulwala Water Ski Club. And on Sunday, a total of 563 runners competed in the 5km and 10km distance events and the 1km and 3km junior events. Super Vet swimmer, Wayne Moriaty of Albury, swam a sizzling time of 20 minutes and 20 seconds for the 1.4 km distance. Close behind, young local swimmer, Elli Warren, blitzed the female field to finish first with a time of 20 minutes and 35 seconds. The annual Yarrawonga Foreshore Fun Run started in perfect cooler conditions and bright sunshine. The 5km run was the popular choice with 253 runners, which included 80 runners from the VFL Coburg Football Club, who were not timed. The 10km event attracted 134 runners and 176 keen junior runners contested the 1km and 3km events. Finley runner, Charlie White, won back to back 5km line honours with a slick 18 minutes and 16 seconds, while young local runner, Steph Gorman, (former student of Sacred Heart) won the Under 18

category with a fantastic time of 22 minutes and 22 seconds. In the 10km event, Wangaratta runner, Paul Hill, won the overall male fastest time with a slick 36 minutes and 42 seconds.
