Denpasar (Bali Post)—In fact, the Idul Fitri homecom-

ing season this year indicates achange of phenomenon in choos-ing the transport modes. Untilseven days before Idul Fitri feastday, the number of passengers us-ing interprovincial city buses(AKAP) stays minimal. Even, theticket reservation to several citiesin Java has not significantly in-creased.

It was delivered by one of theticket sellers of Malang Indah,Wawan, at Ubung Bus Terminalon Tuesday (Aug 23). Wawan ad-mitted the increase inhomecomers from Ubung Termi-nal would possibly occur fromfive days before holiday. “Mosthomecomers who have reserved aticket will depart on August 25,”he said.

According to Wawan, lackingof homecomers using intercitybuses occurred because manypeople rode motorcycles. Simi-larly, a new phenomenon had en-sued since several years agowhere the homecomers also tookadvantage of tourist transport asconsidered more practical. “Sincemany homecomers take tourist

Having been picked up at theNgurah Rai Airport, the group of in-vestors was treated to lunch at theregent’s official residence. Such lun-cheon took place extravagantly andfestively. The group of investors ar-rived at regent’s official residencearound 12:30 a.m. Local Time. Onceout of the car, they were immediatelygreeted by the presentation of gamelanmusic. Then, three beautiful womendraped flower garland to them.

Ridiculously, the officials of thesame level as the head of agency anddivision head were lining up neatlywhile conveying their greeting andwelcoming the investors. Those offi-cials lined up to make a posse likeschool children welcoming the regentor officials who visited their school. After receiving the greetings, the in-vestors were directed to the mainlobby fitted with red carpet. Prior toentering the room, the entourage wasgreeted again with a traditional Ba-linese dance. For approximately fif-teen minutes, the entourage was in-vited to have a seat for enjoying alunch with special dishes served bywell-known restaurant in North Bali.

Indian investors coming last Tues-day consisted of four persons namelyKarti Gajendra, Hari Adul Jafar,Mushasa Djalal and Raju. Unfortu-nately, there were no officials whoknew their position including theircompany name. Those investors wereaccompanied by the Regent PutuBagiada, Deputy Regent Made ArgaPynatih, Secretary of Buleleng Gov-ernment Dewa Ketut Puspaka and anumber of regional leaderships(SKPD) in the scope of Buleleng Re-gency. Meanwhile, no single legisla-tor of Buleleng House looked to at-tend the luncheon. After the luncheon

and ceremonial program, it was re-sumed with mutual handover of sou-venirs. Later, the Regent Bagiada in-vited the four representatives of inves-tor to have a meeting in the villa ownedby the regent located in the region ofCeluk Buluh, Lovina.

Before departing to location of themeeting, the four representatives ofinvestor refused to be interviewed.Meanwhile, the Regent Bagiada statedthat their presence was in relation toconvey the development of investmentplans in Buleleng.

Regent Bagiada said the feasibilitystudy of the international airport un-dertaken by investors in Buleleng Re-gency took place for three months andit had now been accomplished. Ac-cording to the regent, the most urgentresults of the feasibility study was re-garding to location of the airport. Pur-suant to the results of feasibility study, the exact location had not been decidedby the investor. However, location ofthe airport was more focused on theregion of West Buleleng. “The exactlocation remains in a further study. But,from our talks, the project seems to bemore focused on the region of WestBuleleng,” he said.

When asked about the readiness ofland, the regent said it would be stud-ied further. It was in accordance withthe agenda of investors that after thefeasibility study would be continuedto the next stage. As planned, the re-sult of feasibility study including theland issues would be studied in depththrough a meeting in central govern-ment. “It will be included in subse-quent studies. After this, there willbe a discussion in central level. Ofcourse, the land issue would be dis-cussed and re-examined further,” headded. (kmb/kmb15)

transport, passenger of bus tendsto decline. Since 2009, the num-ber of homecomers taking regularbuses continued to decline,” hesaid.

Decline in passengers using theintercity buses had no significantimpact on the ticket fare set by busoperators. Even, for this year, aticket of executive class bus re-mained to be offered at IDR200,000 for Denpasar-Malangroute. “It is the same as the lastyear’s fare,” he added.

Comparable condition was alsorecognized by a bus driver ofDenpasar-Surabaya route, MadePurya. He acknowledged therewas a decline in the number of pas-sengers each year. For this IdulFitri, the bus he drove was onlyable to hold maximally 90 percent.Even, on normal days, the seat oc-cupancy was up to 75 percent.“Ahead of this Idul Fitri, it indeedshows a slight increase comparedto normal days,” he explained.

Wawan added again that in2010 and perhaps this year his partywould have no additional units ofbus. Such minimal number of pas-sengers could be accommodated bythe existing buses. “After 2005, the

bus operator where we work nolonger launch additional buses ev-ery Idul Fitri,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of theBali Land Transportation Organi-zation (Organda), Edi Ketut PutraDharma, assessed the choice oftransportation mode for home-coming was inseparable from thecomfort demand of each user. Onthat account, bus operators wererequired to provide more comfortto draw passengers. “If intercitybus wants to attract passengers, the service extended to passengersshould be improved. We cannotforce the passengers because theyhave freedom to choose their pref-erable transport. All passengerssurely choose the most conve-nient. Thus, the only way to lurepassengers is to improve ser-vices,” he explained.

In the meantime, the DenpasarTransportation Agency in this year’shomecoming season prepared 146units of regular intercity bus with4,964 seats. Besides, it was alsoadded with 18 units of reserve buswith a total of 630 seats. Totally, there were 164 units of buses with5,594 seats that were ready to servethe homecomers. (kmb12)

TRIPOLI, Libya — A TV channel is quoting Libyan leaderMoammar Gadhafi as saying he retreated from his Tripoli compoundin a “tactical move” after 64 NATO airstrikes turned it to rubble.

dreds of Libyan rebels stormedMoammar Gadhafi’s compoundTuesday, charging wildly throughthe symbolic heart of the crumblingregime as they killed loyalisttroops, looted armories andknocked the head off a statue of thebesieged dictator. But they foundno sign of the man himself.

The storming of Bab al-Aziziya,long the nexus of Gadhafi’s power, marked the effective collapse of his42-year-old regime. But withGadhafi and his powerful sons stillunaccounted for — and gunbattlesflaring across the nervous city —

the fighters cannot declare victory. The rebel force entered the com-

“We’re looking for Gadhafi now.We have to find him now,” saidSohaib Nefati, a rebel sitting againsta wall with a Kalashnikov rifle.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date forit annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 daysaccording to Balinese calendar, including the smallerancestral shrine which each family possesses. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimespainted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifullyarranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. Infront of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellasdepending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides theseumbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributesof Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”,long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments ofyoung coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits andcolored cakes, to the Temple. major Category 3 storm with windsover 111 miles per hour (178 kmper hour) by Thursday, the Hurri-cane Center forecasters said.

While warning the entire U.S.East Coast to be on the alert, Fed-eral Emergency ManagementAgency Administrator CraigFugate and National HurricaneCenter Director Bill Read said itwas too early to be certain whereIrene would directly hit the coast-line.

“We’re going to have a verylarge tropical cyclone move up theEastern Seaboard over the next fiveto seven days,” Read said on a con-ference call in which he spokealong with Fugate.

The “best guess” forecast wasthat it would approach the coast ofthe Carolinas on Saturday morningas a major storm of Category 3 orupward, Read said.

The earthquake came less thanthree weeks before the 10th an-niversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and in both Washington and NewYork it immediately triggeredfears of something more sinisterthan a natural disaster.

Obama, who is vacationing onMartha’s Vineyard, led a confer-ence call Tuesday afternoon onthe earthquake with top admin-istration officials, including theadministrator of the FederalEmergency ManagementAgency.

At the Pentagon in Washing-ton, a low rumbling built until thebuilding itself was shaking, andpeople ran into the corridors ofthe complex. The shaking contin-ued there, to shouts of “Evacu-ate! Evacuate!”

The Park Service closed allmonuments and memorials onthe National Mall, and ceilingtiles fell at Reagan National Air-port outside Washington. Allflights there were put on hold.

Also in Washington, the Na-tional Cathedral said cracks hadappeared in the flying buttressesaround the apse at one end. “Ev-eryone here is safe,” the cathe-dral said on its official Twitterfeed. “Please pray for the Cathe-dral as there has been some dam-

He admit-ted to feel ashamed of diving into busi-ness as a food seller where the oppor-tunity was mostly taken over by manyregional migrants. “I feel ashamed oftaking such kind of job. Now, I’m stilllooking for a job according to my com-petence,” he said.

Unavoidably, such mindset hascaused a number of regional migrantsspeculating on the Island of Bali to takethat potential easily. For example, sofar the opportunities as hawker of avariety of food were mostly taken bymigrants. Originally, many of themwere only working with others andeventually opened their own businesssuch as selling meatballs, fried foodand so forth.

The Head of Coordinator of PrivateHigher Education of Region VIII,Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Sucipta, said thatso far Balinese people especially theyounger generation indeed had a highcreativity and innovation, but theylacked of entrepreneurship. “We cansee in a kite and ogoh-ogoh (papiermâché demon) competition they lookvivacious to create a variety of highlycreative and innovative works. Unfor-tunately, their creativity and innova-tion in the field of entrepreneurship isvery minimal,” he said.

He said Bali was starting to lookdeserted because most of the informalsector businesses began closing as left

Seeing this, young gen-eration should be able to take the po-tential business opportunity in accor-dance with their skills. “For instance, young creative and innovative peoplecan make meatballs or fried food withnew flavors. Now is the right time tomarket them. At least, after Bali is in-vaded by thousands of informal busi-nesses, the youth of Bali has managedto take these opportunities,” he af-firmed. Furthermore, the formerDeputy Rector III of Udayana Uni-versity said that a few opportunitiesin informal sector were taken by theyounger generation of Bali becausethey lacked of entrepreneurialism.Even, so far they seemed to pursuethe tourism sector becoming the ex-cellence of Bali. Sucipta added thatlately many analytical studies and re-searches related to solution of theproblems. Now, it was the right timeto implement them. According to him,the education on understanding of en-trepreneurship should be carried outpersistently to encourage the youngergeneration since entering senior high/vocational high school because the un-derstanding would trigger their cre-ativity and innovation in the field ofentrepreneurship.

“Here lies the important role offormal education, non formal educa-tion and government because basedon the data in 2011, the number of newentrepreneurship in Indonesia has justreached 0.02 percent, whereas thestandard set is 0.2 percent of the popu-lation,” he said. (bit/par)

Investors in Bali also have thesame feeling to purchasing goldthese days. They choose gold overforeign exchange because they wor-ried that forex will keep drop amidthe economic crisis.

According to Operational ManagerGallery Kohinoor Nur OctavianaJiwaji, the rise of gold’s price doesn’tdeter investors to purchase this metal. She said the more expensive the price, the more people try to buy gold as theirinvestment portfolio. ‘’Gold’s price israrely dropping drastically like forex.Because of that, investors changingtheir portfolio to gold,” she explained.

She explained investment on goldcan be divided on three types, localgold, gold that being produces byAneka Tambang (Antam), and UBS.

DENPASAR – The rise of gold’s price on global market dur-ing the crisis that hit United States and Europe making thisprecious metal look more promising than ever. Investors havebeen putting money into gold because of concerns about theslowing global economy and wild swings in stock indexes.

From all types, local gold is the cheap-est one. Usually local investors arepurchasing this gold because it is lotcheaper than UBS and Antam. Mean-while Antam is the expensive one andhave international certificate so it canbe sold throughout the world.

As per Tuesday afternoon, 100gram of local gold was sold aroundIDR520,500 per gram, whilstAntam production was soldIDR554,000 per gram.

Nur said the gold price in Indone-sia also being affected by Idul Fitricelebration. On this celebration, Mos-lem people purchasing gold’s acces-sories, like ring, bracelet, and neck-lace, to complete their celebration out-fit. During this time, gold price usu-ally rise steadily. (kmb18)

Endek Clothes of Klungkung Penetrates Italian and Japanese Marketand Japan. Though an earthquake fol-lowed by tsunami disaster hit Japan, the effect is not so significant to thedemand for endek fabric from the sun-rise country.

Increasing interests in endekclothes have an impact on craftsmenwhere the demand for endek clothes

also shows a rapid growth inKlungkung Regency. Even, a singlecraftsman can produce up to 500meters of endek clothes every day. Theendek clothes produced are dividedinto two types, namely plain cloth andcloth with motif. One of the handi-craftsmen is Wayan Suartika, theowner of ‘Ardini’ endek clothes handi-craft at Jabon, Sampalan Tengah,Dawan Subdistrict.

However, amidst the increasingdemand, labor difficulties haunt thecraftsmen. They have difficulty to ob-tain some labors that are willing toweave endek clothes in order they canmeet consumer demand. As a result, artisans are unable to meet all requests, whereas until now the KlungkungRegency actually still has thousandsof unemployment, both educated anduneducated ones.

Meanwhile, the Head ofKlungkung Social, Manpower andTransmigration Services, NyomanRahayu, said that unemployment ratein Klungkung Regency reached 4005people from about 134,380 job seek-ers with age of 15 years or older.Klungkung Regency was unable toreduce the number of unemploymentand to create job opportunities other

than opening vacancies of civil servantaspirants each year. Rahayu also ad-mitted that her party could not engen-der skilled unemployment because un-til now Klungkung Regency did nothave a vocational training center(BLK).

This condition is certainly in con-trary to the difficulty undergone by theendek weaving handicraftsmen.Wayan Suartika also experienced simi-lar condition. The demand for hisendekweaving works (Ardini EndekHandicraft) was admitted to increase. It was not only from locally Bali (ex-cept for Gianyar) but also from out-side Bali such as Lombok up to over-seas like Italy and Japan.

Formerly, to accomplish the orders,Suartika employed more than 200workers. However, last year his work-ers only remained some 100 people.Related to decrease in the number ofworkers, the man familiarly ad-dressed as Songkrong by most of hisrelations said that younger genera-tion of Bali today, especially theyounger generation of theserombotan (assorted salads servedwith hot spices) land preferred tochoose other jobs such as working insupermarket or a career in offices,

public and private sector. In reality, income of an endek weaver was notless than a career in the office orworking in supermarket. “The weav-ers working with us get a minimumincome of IDR 800,000 per month.Of course, such amount of salary can-not certainly be earned if working insupermarket,” he said.

Suartika had pioneered the endekweaving handicrafts since 1982. Ini-tially, his business was initiated byone cagcag or non-mechanical loom(ATBM). Now, the numbers contin-ued to increase even reached 200units. The price of cagcag equipmentreached up to IDR 2.5 million perunit. With such a amount of equip-ment he owned, Suartika could pro-duce endek clothes up to 500 meterswith various motifs each day.

Other than endek clothes,Klungkung Regency also has uniqueweaving works, one of the productsis cepuk cloth in Nusa Penida. Un-fortunately, the number of weaver inNusa Penida has decreased. On thataccount, it requires serious attentionof government to re-encourage them,so distinctive characteristic ofKlungkung can be well maintainedin the future. (bal)IBP/Net

Each region in Indonesia hasdifferent delicacy pursuant to sur-rounding environment providingthe ingredients and tradition main-tained. Bali, for instance, haslawar. It has been renowned andtasted by the tongue of foreigntourists. Hot spices supported bya variety of tubers and thinly-chopped vegetables like the youngcoconut shell, string bean, gratedcoconut or young papaya willkindle the appetite from the begin-ning until the end. Then, choppedmeat such as pork, beef, chicken, duck or others are used as themain ingredient, and it gives thename of the lawar itself. Thislawar delicacy is over and overagain introduced in every occa-sion of traditional culinary event.

At vil lages, the ngelawar(preparation of lawar) tradition isbegun by togetherness. Villagersusually slaughter a pig or the likeand prepare the dishes collec-tively for special occasions suchas personal life-cycle rituals ortemple anniversary. later, the chopping boards turncrowded soundingtek...tek…tek…tek and goes on.Some prepare spices and veg-etables, while the others slicethinly the meat in use. In essence, the pebat or kitchen departmentis very busy.

Meanwhile, when celebratingthe Galungan and Kuningan fes-tivity, Balinese people (Hindu)may join the collective slaughterknown as mepatung while foodpreparation is undertaken indi-vidually. This has something todo with slightly different tastesand interests. The food is pre-pared for filling some oblationsother than for consumption. Theirfood habitually consist of lawar, satay, komoh (clear soup), urutan(sausage), skin crackers, tum(chopped meat mix with spicesand then steamed) and so forth.

Other tradition remains to bemaintained is ngejot or present-ing food gift to neighbor and rela-tives. Though they equally havethe same delicacy, it is intendedto maintain social relationshipand exchange the food as theirsmay have different tastes. Simi-

larly, family members will alsovisit relatives where parent orgrandparent comes from. Toshare the happiness with the an-cestral souls, at least family willalso bring along sagi offering andbe presented to them in the homeplatform shrine at bale dangin oreastern pavilion.

Today, probably many peopleare very busy as they must be incharge to work. However, thereare always people offering theirservices by providing ready-to-serve lawar. It is variedly packedin nice bamboo basket containingparticular number of satay, lawarand serapah (grated coconut withmeat). On that account, peoplewill not be busy to prepare it incase of organizing an event orsocio-religious activity.

When making a visit to Bali,it also a good opportunity for youtry these delicacies. At least, trythe lawar as it has been identicalto Balinese cuisine. Seemingly, your visit to Bali would be incom-plete without ‘pampering’ yourtongue by this delicacy. Of course,it will enrich your culinary adven-ture, too! (BTN/punia)

The cut in Japan’s governmentbond rating Wednesday to Aa3from Aa2 puts the country threenotches below Moody’s top Aaarating. Moody’s Investors Servicesaid the outlook for the rating isstable.

The rating cut comes ahead ofanother leadership shuffle in Ja-pan. With his popularity sinking,Prime Minister Naoto Kan and hisCabinet are preparing to resignnext week. That would set thestage for a leadership electionwithin the ruling party and a newprime minister — Japan’s sixth infour years.

Frequent administrationchanges have prevented Japan’sgovernment from adopting effec-tive long-term economic and fis-cal policies, Moody’s said.

Kan has been criticized for lack-ing leadership after the March 11earthquake and tsunami and sub-sequent nuclear crisis, and survi-vors of the disasters complain ofslow relief and recovery efforts.Polls show his approval rating isbelow 20 percent.

TOKYO — Moody’s downgraded Japan’s credit rating, citing the country’s weak growthprospects, massive government debt and constant political uncertainty.

country’s gross domestic product.“These developments further

hamper the economy’s ability toachieve a growth rate strongenough to steadily reduce the bud-get deficit,” Moody’s said.

The downgrade puts Moody’sJapan rating in line with other ma-jor agencies. Both Standard &Poor’s and Fitch rate Japan AA-,three notches below their top AAAratings.

In May, Moody’s warned itcould downgrade Japan after theworld’s No. 3 economy slippedback into recession in the firstquarter due to tumbling output andexports following the March 11earthquake and tsunami.

Moody’s has maintained itsAAA rating on the United Stateswhile Standard & Poor’s earlierthis month took the unprecedentedstep of downgrading the U.S.,blaming large deficits and politi-cal gridlock.

The decision compounded wor-ries about the fiscal health of theworld’s biggest economies and un-nerved already volatile financialmarkets.

Reaction to Japan’s rating cutWednesday was more muted. Ana-lysts described the move as hardlya surprise, and bond markets re-

mained calm.Noriatsu Tanji, a fixed income

strategist at Barclays Capital in To-kyo, said that unlike the U.S., a rat-ing cut is not new territory for Ja-pan. At one point in 2002, Moody’shad dropped its assessment on Ja-pan to as low as A2 before gradu-ally upgrading it starting 2007.

“The latest downgrade putsJapan’s rating at a level it has al-ready seen before,” he said in a re-search note.

Japanese government bondshave historically weathered ratingcuts without sharp drops. Unlikethe U.S., the vast majority of theJapan’s public debt is owned do-mestically.

Even as it downgraded its viewon Japan, Moody’s highlighted thecountry’s large economy and de-pendable domestic funding basethat enables the government tofund itself “at a lower nominal costthan any other advancedeconomy.”

“Furthermore, throughout theglobal financial crisis, in themonths after the March earth-quake, and in recent days with re-newed turmoil in global markets,(Japanese government bonds) con-tinue to demonstrate exceptionallystrong safe-haven features,” it said.

LOS ANGELES — Al Pacino says he got burnedwhile making “Scarface.” Literally, he grabbed thehot barrel of a gun that had just shot 30 rounds dur-ing one of Tony Montana’s violent scenes. “My handstuck to that sucker,” the 71-year-old actor recalled. He couldn’t work for two weeks.

Pacino relayed the experience during a discus-sion with “Scarface” co-stars Steven Bauer, Rob-ert Loggia and F. Murray Abraham and producerMartin Bregman at a party Tuesday heralding thefilm’s Blu-ray release. Part of the charm of thefilm, Pacino said, is that it wasn’t initially a hit.

“It’s one of my favorites because of its wholeevolution,” he said. “It (was) sort of evisceratedafter it opened by the press. ... Nobody was fondof it, except it had good audience participation.”He said “it’s almost a miracle” audiences con-tinue to discover and appreciate the film.

He wanted to make it after being inspiredby Paul Muni’s performance in the 1932 origi-nal. Sidney Lumet suggested he make the maincharacter Cuban instead of Italian.

Pacino’s “Scarface” is set in 1980s Miami, and Tony Montana is an ambitious immigrantwho runs a growing drug empire until he even-tually collapses under greed and addiction.Pacino’s performance as the gun-wielding, coke-snorting Montana is among his most memorable.

He said that during the nine months he wasshooting the film, his character practically in-habited him. When a friend’s yappy little doglunged at him, Pacino said he cocked back hisfist instinctively, as if threatening a punch. “SoI love Tony Montana, man, because I couldn’tdo that!” Pacino said Tuesday.

The Winehouse family an-nounced plans to establish a chari-table foundation in the singer’sname to help people struggling withaddiction — although MitchWinehouse has said the plans areon hold because someone else hadregistered the name AmyWinehouse Foundation.

In her short lifetime, Winehousefrequently made headlines becauseof drug and alcohol abuse, eatingdisorders, destructive relationships

Her father said she had devel-oped the lung disease emphysemafrom smoking cigarettes and crack, although her spokeswoman latersaid Winehouse only had “earlysigns of what could lead to emphy-sema.” She turned her tumultuouslife and personal demons into songssuch as “Rehab,” from her Grammy-winning album “Back to Black.”

Her death prompted an outpour-ing of emotion from fans — manyof whom left flowers and offeringsoutside her house in north London’sCamden neighborhood — and fromfellow musicians. Her final record-ing, a duet with Tony Bennett on“Body and Soul,” is due to releasednext month as a charity single.

Their study, published Tuesdayin the online journal PLoS Biology,a publication of the Public Libraryof Science, estimated the number ofspecies at nearly 8.8 million.

Of those species, 6.5 million wouldbe on land and 2.2 million in the ocean, which is a priority for the scientistsdoing the work since they are part ofthe Census of Marine Life, an inter-national group of scientists trying torecord all the life in the ocean.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Adidas is going barefoot. The world’s sec-ond-largest athletic company unveiled its first “barefoot” training shoe Tues-day, which is designed to mimic the experience of exercising barefoot whileproviding the protection, traction and durability of a shoe. The AdipureTrainer, which is a cross between a glove for the feet and a traditional shoe, hits U.S. stores in November priced at $90.

The barefoot shoe is part of a strategy by Adidas, which is based inGermany, to expand into the U.S. where rival Nike dominates. Adidas joinsa list of athletic makers trying to tap into the small but burgeoning U.S.market of fanatical runners and gym-goers who swear by shoes designedwith as little material between the wearer and the ground as possible.

“People who believe barefoot is the way to go...are very emphatic aboutit,” said Matt Powell, an analyst with industry research organizationSportsOneSource Group. “They want to spread the message. It soundsreligious but some of them are evangelical about it.”

The athletic shoe and clothing business has been fairly resilient duringthe U.S. economic downturn, but it is an industry that thrives almost en-tirely on new products. When it comes to shoes, the latest and greatestcaptures the U.S. customer. While barefoot shoes make up a tiny fractionof the $22 billion U.S. athletic shoe industry, it is one of the fast-growingcategories. Sales have more than doubled in the past year to roughly $750million, according to SportsOneSource.

Nike, the world’s biggest athletic company, holds roughly 65 per-cent of the market and appeals to barefoot loyalists and mainstreamexercise enthusiasts alike with the traditional running shoe look of its“Free” line. Vibram has about 10 percent of the market with its Five-Finger shoe, which encases each toe separately and has come to de-fine the style. Other big companies such as Merrell, Fila, Saucony,Asics and New Balance also have their own barefoot or so-calledminimalist offerings.

Serena Williams was seeded 28th for the U.S. Open, which stuck with its policy of followingthe rankings instead of taking into account players’ past performances. That decision meansWilliams could face one of the Grand Slam tournament’s top eight seeded players as early asthe third round.

Fernando Alonso’s recent run of good form, whichincluded victory in the British Grand Prix, has put him89 points behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel- and his only realistic hope of closing that gap downdramatically is if his Red Bull rival hits some trouble.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali sayshis team’s approach right now is on simply tryingto win each grand prix, and then in a few race’stime the outfit can take a better look to see if thereis still a chance of the title.

Meanwhile, he openly admits that the real ef-fort at Maranello is on delivering a much moreaggressive car design for next year, having realisedthe team was too conservative this season.

“Our realistic goal for the remaining eightgrands prix is to win races, to score as many pointsas possible,” Domenicali told the official Ferrari

We have the potential to dowell and we have to believe in ourselves.

“In terms of the development of the 150º Italia,we are almost at the end of the road but this doesnot mean that work on this year’s car has come toa complete halt, but as of now, we are working fullthrottle on the 2012 car.

“As far as next year’s regulations are concerned, apart from rules regarding the exhaust system, thereare not many changes; therefore the new cars canbe described as a development of the 2011 car. How-ever, what I can say, having seen the model in thewind tunnel and the work going on in the drawingoffice, is that it will be a very innovative machine.

“In fact, this is to be expected, this is necessarygiven that our first goal is that, in 2012, we must becompetitive right from the very start of the season.”

Marco Simoncelli close to extending contractMarco Simoncelli is close to extending his MotoGP

contract with Honda, with the Italian rider sayingnegotiations with HRC are ‘ongoing’ and now on atechnical details level. There has been much specu-lation over HRC’s 2012 line-up after the devastatingeffects of the tsunami that struck Japan in Marchput the team under pressure to make drastic cuts -said to be 30% - to its racing budget.

“Negotiations are ongoing,” Simoncelli is quoted as say-ing by Gazzetta. “We are discussing technical details. “I’mopen to reinforcements, but changing the crew completely isnot right. After two years where we’ve improved together, itwould be strange to break it all apart when it’s time to reapthe fruits.

“We’ll see in Indy and I hope to be as optimistic as I feelnow. I’d like to go back home with a clearer situation, be-cause it would be important to have a decision, even if it’s notthe proper contract yet, by Misano.” Livio Suppo, the formerDucati head who switched to Honda for 2010, confirmed thatHRC had asked Simoncelli to switch crews but said he wasopen to negotiation on the issue.

“[HRC vice president Shuhei] Nakamoto would like tostrengthen the technical side in order to give Marco maxi-mum support because, even if the team has improved, he stillsees something lacking. “We understand the importance therider gives to his current crew though so at Indy, during nego-tiations, we may backtrack on this point.”

If an agreement is reachedSimoncelli would stay with thesatellite Gresini team, forwhom he scored his first po-dium in MotoGP in the lastround at Brno. Fausto Gresinisays that retaining Simoncelli, and having two bikes to run, arecrucial if the relationship withHonda is to be maintained.

“This time is really delicateand I hope everything getssorted by Indianapolis already. That’s because for me it’s im-portant to continue the long re-lationship I have with Honda, but it’s vital to carry on withMarco.

“Being able to field twobikes is fundamental, even ifone of them has the engine de-rived from road production. It’sa bit of a troubling matter forthe Japanese.” Gazzetta reportsthat, as a result of the Simoncellidevelopments, Dovizioso is notexpected to be retained.
