Singaraja (Bali Post)—Compost processing machine

at Tangguwisia village, Seririt sub-district, seems to remain useless until the next few months. This happens because the government is still waiting for the amended re-gional budget to improve the pre-viously collapsed factory building as buffeted by tornado.

The Head of Buleleng Cooper-ative, Trade and Industry Agency, Ni Made Arnika, said on Sunday (Aug 4) that her party had made coordination with the Bali Indus-try Agency some time ago related to the compost machine that had not been in operation so far. Ad-mittedly, the compost processing machine had not been in opera-tion because the building was not completed after the collapse due to tornado disaster. Meanwhile, the machine and other facilities that had been purchased should be installed though the building

collapsed. Since the machine was installed, the Bali Industry and Trade Agency decided not to operate the facilities. “We have coordinated with the Bali Industry and Trade Agency and it was de-cided if the machine would not be operated because the location has not been worth using for compost processing,” she said.

According to Arnika, the Bali Industry and Trade Agency was still waiting for the amended re-gional budget to rebuild the place for compost processing at Tang-guwisia. After the building was completed, the Agency would operate the facility. As planned, the Agency would hand over the facility management to Buleleng County. “It is said we have to wait for the amended budget to rebuild the collapsed building and after that we will be given the right to manage the facility,” she explained.

For information, the compost processing machine at Tang-guwisia village, Seririt subdis-trict, is left useless until now. Machine and other equipment at the location were not operated. Meanwhile, the building worked on previously had collapsed after being swept away by a tornado some time ago. Surprisingly, the facilities established by Bali government were left dormant. Surrounding residents deplored it because the machine was left in the open space. They worried if the machine and equipment would be damaged by the sun and rain. They requested relevant agencies in Buleleng County to take required measure and continue the construction of the compost processing facilities. Moreover, residents were looking forward to the facilities because they would be easier to get a compost supply. (kmb)

It was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Associa-tion (PHRI) Gianyar, Ida Bagus Hariana, some time ago. The tourism innovation was not merely to build new hotels. It should provide a new attraction for tourists coming to Gianyar. Similarly, it was also required various events to attract more tourists to visit Gianyar. “When the Gianyar tourism development is not undertaken with innova-tion, it will assuredly threaten the viability of tourism that presumably can survive up to 20 years,” he said.

In addressing the sustainability of the forthcoming Gianyar tourism, it was re-quired a prudence in terms of issuing the regulations related to licensing. On that account, it was required a definite study to determine the need for accommodation in Gianyar used as reference in issuing the licensing. “They are all intended to maintain the tourism infrastructure of Gianyar so that they will not surpass the capacity,” he explained.

In terms of the need, the existence of hotels in Gianyar had been too much. Such condition could kindle unfair competition. Moreover, the accommodations applying the city hotel concept currently appearing in numbers were far from the concept of Bali-nese architecture. Many guest houses owned by local residents began to be threatened by the presence of those city hotels.

As observation on Sunday (Aug 4), many tourist accommodations in Gianyar had apparently taken advantage of coastal area, river bank to rice fields. Based on the tourism data of the Gianyar County, the number of tourist accommodation in Gian-yar reached 1,003 units including star hotels, budget hotels and cottages. They were only the licensed accommodations. Allegedly, there were still many hotels having had no license. It was recognized by the Head of Gianyar Tourism Agency, Anak Agung Ari Brahmanta, who would make coordination with the team to re-conduct an operation of permit enforcement. (kmb16)

Tabanan (Bali Post)—Homecomers passing through the deadly road section of Gilimanuk-

Denpasar, Tabanan, were completely pampered. To avoid congestion and traffic accidents, the homecoming motorists were escorted by police using large motorbike as carried out on Sunday (Aug 4). Hundreds of homecom-ers were stopped at Adipura statue, Tabanan. Then, they were given briefing related to security. Having quite a lot of homecomers gathered, two police personnel escorted them to Gilimanuk by driving large motorbike.

The special escort for homecomers was held starting at 4:00 p.m. and continued until late night. “It is a part of the homecoming service to avoid traffic jams and accidents. We escort them by assigning the officers of the Patrol and Escort Unit using large motorbike,” said Division Head of Tabanan Police Traffic Operations, Bagus Astawa. According to him, the homecoming escort was given to every departure group when having reached 100-200 participants. The officers escorted them to pass through the skull lane in the borderline of Tabanan-Jembrana. Hopefully, with the escort by personnel using large motorbike the homecomers would not be stuck in traffic, and could survive up to Gilimanuk crossing.

According to Bagus Astawa, the escorts with large motorbike would continue to be held until two days before the Eid. The homecoming traffic passing through Tabanan was estimated to continuously increase over the coming Eid holidays. “As prediction, the peak of the homecoming traf-fic is today (Sunday—Ed) and tomorrow (Monday—Ed),” he concluded. Gianyar tourism needs innovationGianyar (Bali Post)—

Gianyar tourism required an innovation. This was to avoid the impres-sion of monotony in the tourism sector. Amidst the increasingly rapid development of tourism, it did not only require physical development like a hotel, villa, cottage or restaurant that had now increasingly been a lot. However, it also required an innovation in the new eco-friendly tourist objects.

Bali Post BANGLI - Bangli government

was expected to be more focused on the geopark area management. By a year of the Mount Batur rocky area set by the UNESCO, the presence of the geopark had so far not considered to give significant contribution to the welfare of society. Besides, the gov-ernment should also be more focused. If it really wanted to perform the conservation, the exploitation should be more disciplined. It was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, I Made Sudiasa.

According to him, the geopark previously directed to become a spearhead for people’s welfare in-deed retained its own dilemma. The geopark area that should be protected as a terrestrial park of the Mount Batur caldera on the other side was mas-sively exploited such as by the sand mining (quarry C). For the communi-

ties around the quarry, it was one of the sources of their prosperity. “Since the very beginning, the geopark was directed to become a spearhead for the welfare of community but it then resulted in a dilemma. Originally, there has been indeed a quarry area at the geopark region having become the source of prosperity for lower class community,” he said.

This politician from Undisan vil-lage added if the government would like to discipline the sand mining activity it should also be coupled with the provision of substitute job oppor-tunities for local people.

Besides, in response to the previ-ous information mentioning if in the geopark region would also be equipped with tourism facilities such as golf courses, said Sudiasa, it obvi-ously opposed to the conservation efforts. Indirectly, establishment of the golf course would exploit the

protected areas. In this case, Sudiasa judged the

government seemed to have not focused. “If choosing the geopark, please go on. If it’s a part of the po-tential to be developed or exploited, please review it first. If it is aimed at improving the people’s welfare, the government should take a decision by taking one of two choices,” he said.

According to his observation, so far the presence of geopark could not have given a great contribution to surrounding community. Even, a few people still had not understood about the geopark itself. “So far, I think a lot of people remain not to understand about the geopark. To that end, I do hope the government could more ag-gressively socialize as well as invite the stakeholders to think about the next measures,” he said while adding if the idea of geopark seemed to be a forced idea. It was revealed in a discussion entitled ‘Negative Investment and Bali as Target of Money Laundry’ in Denpasar, Friday (Aug 2). The dis-cussion was attended by an econom-ic and banking observer Viraguna Bagoes Oka, lecturers at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University Dr. Ida Bagus Putu Purbadharmaja and Desi Apriliani, Chairman of the LPPM of Warmadewa University Dr. I Gusti Bagus Udayana and a development and business observer, AA Ngurah Wirawan.

Viraguna Bagoes Oka said that Bali had become a haven for inves-tors to invest their capital and take profits in Bali. Unfortunately, the government was less selective in filtering the incoming investments. Even, the investment coming into Bali tended to be negative invest-ment that could disrupt the socio-cultural order of Bali. “We cannot forbid the investors to invest in Bali because Bali also needs investors.

Excessive investment

Bali singled out as money laundering destinationBali Post

DENPASAR - Bali has become an easy investment target for businessmen from outside Bali and foreign countries. Swift entry of investment into Bali without filters, selection and supervision is very prone to be infiltrated by money laundering endeavors. Even, Bali becomes the target of money laundering. Addition-ally, the government is not selective to the investment efforts having negative impacts on Bali and harming the socio-cultural order and Balinese local wisdom. For instance, the decree on the permit of reclamation at conservation area of Benoa Bay waters that will be built with various tourist accommodation facilities was passed.

However, it does not necessarily mean that all the investments must be approved. The investment com-ing into Bali must also pay atten-tion to socio-cultural order in Bali and Balinese local wisdom must be maintained,” he said.

He pointed out that investment plan disguising as reclamation at Benoa Bay for the making of a new island as the buffer against the tsunami should be carefully observed. Therefore, it should not allow any investment and reclamation infringing the laws and only having negative impacts such as the widening economic gap that destroyed the socio-cultural order and local wisdom when the reclamation was passed.

He also invited the public to ob-serve sensitively and carefully the sequence of the government projects such as the toll bridge (JDP) and the licenses issued by the Bali government like the decree on the utilization per-mit of mangrove forests in the Grand

Forest Park (Tahura) to PT TRB for the benefit of nature tourism and the decree on the permit of reclamation at Benoa Bay water to PT TWBI in which both investments reaped the rejection from Balinese community.

“We must sensitively and care-fully look at this sequence of events. Why should there be toll bridge and expansion of the Ngurah Rai airport? Then, there is a permit of Grand Forest Park (Tahura) and permit on

the reclamation at Benoa Bay. It is a huge investment and needs an ad-equate infrastructure. Therefore, they need observing. Apparently, there is a grand and interrelated design,” he said. (kmb29)

Dawn Music Festival or Loloan community called it Ngotek, Saturday night (Aug 3). Aditya Hairul Imam, one of the committees, said that at least there were 56 groups com-ing from Loloan Timur and Loloan Barat. Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Aside from the land for tobacco cultivation narrows, the price of tobacco also slumps this year com-pared to the harvest season last year. Assuredly, this condition makes farmers distraught. Moreover, there is an issue if the price drop is caused by the incoming of imported tobacco into Indonesia.

Secretary of the Indonesian To-bacco Farmers Association (APTI) Buleleng, Agung Adnyana, said the price of tobacco purchased by cigarette manufacturer this year was indeed down. He added the manufac-turer bargained the tobacco harvest at the average price of IDR 30,000 per kg of dried tobacco. Meanwhile, the price in the previous harvest season reached an average price of IDR 31,500 per

kg. The company management said the price decline in local tobacco oc-curred because the importer recently started supplying imported tobacco into Indonesia. Such conditions forced the price of local tobacco to fall.

“Indeed, the amount of imported tobacco is said to be large enough, but when we asked about the needs for domestic tobacco was not answered by the company. We worry if the issue of

imported tobacco is only a pretext so that the company can bargain the local tobacco at lower price,” he said.

According to Agung, the decline in the price of tobacco in the next harvest season would certainly hurt farmers. Even, in the current growing season, many farmers did not plant because they worried if they were forced to suffer a loss. Other than due to the declining price of tobacco, the

operational cost also increased this year compared to the harvest season a year ago. He pointed out that the price of a 50-kg LPG tube to dry out tobacco reached IDR 654,000. It sharply rose as much as IDR 270,000 from IDR 384,000. “Besides, the land lease price at some locations also increases. That’s why the fellow farmers do not dare to plant this year,” he added. Kereban Langit Temple is lo-cated at Pekandelan hamlet, Sading, Mengwi, Badung. In this temple lies a cave about 15 meters deep. Vug of the cave is large enough so that visitors can feel the sun despite being in the cave as if the cave is open to sky (the word kereb means shade or roof). The word is closely related to the naming of the temple. A spring can be found in the cave believed to be capable of exuding holy water of the Lord Vishnu. However, the spring will flow to the surface very rarely only when the lord deigns. Similarly, another spring also flows from the cave drained to Pancha Rishi shower for panglukatan or purificatory rite.

According to temple priest of Kereban Langit, Jero Mangku Swe-den, there were no written records on the history of the temple. How-ever, based on the story from the elders, the temple was mentioned to have been named around 923 AD. Establishment of the temple was closely related to the story of the twin kings Masula-Masuli. Once upon a time, the King of Klungkung wishing a child got a guide from de-ity Toh Langkir to search for tirtha selaka. For that purpose, a priest was then assigned to do it.

In his quest, the priest passed around the river located near the cave that is now becoming the Kereban Langit temple. The priest met a hermit from Sading. It was said the hermit had been meditating in the cave for several months. In that encounter, the priest expressed the intention of his journey to the hermit. The hermit then provided

The shrine is used to worship Kang Ci Wi and is highly believed by Chinese descendant community to bring in blessings. In the main complex or innermost courtyard lies the worship place of Petak Grand Palace comprising the eleven and nine-tiered meru shrines. Similarly, there is also ancestral worship of Dalem Balingkang in the form of brick chamber and seven-tiered meru shrine to remind of the Seven Deities. Besides, there are long

Dalem Balingkang Temple

Showing Chinese Influence in BaliBangli has a unique temple showing a strong Chinese influence known as Dalem Balingkang Temple.

Structure of the temple is unique because it was formerly said to serve as a palace to avoid the attack from other kings. Formerly, the Dalem Balingkang Temple belonged to the temple complex of Tanggun Titi—standing for the end of bridge and had a spring. In this temple complex lie some shrines dedicated to Ratu Ngurah Sakti Tanggun Titi, Ratu Mas Melanting, Ratu Sakti Gede Penyarikan and Sang Hyang Haji Saraswati. The second complex after passing a square occurs a cangapit building, namely an entrance equipped with a monarchic sitting when the king watched the Jro Gede mepada surrounding the temple. The middle courtyard only has a few buildings, only consisting of a meeting hall, the abode of all deities and a shrine of Ratu Ayu Subandar.

pavilion with 24 columns and 20 columns as well as mundar-mundar pavilion with 16 columns.

History of the temple is much revealed in the Sukawana Inscription (Goris, 1954). It said that Sukawana village was hit by storms and the palace of Jaya Pangus was badly damaged, so that Jong Les moved to Balingkang. Balingkang itself is de-rived from two words Bali + ingkang. Orally and based on written evidence, it is associated with the wedding of

King Jaya Pangus Harkajalancana who ruled during the period of Caka Year 1103-1191 or 1181-1269 AD. King Jaya Pangus had two queens, Paduka Bhatari Sri Parameswari In-dujaketana and Paduka Sri Mahadewi Cacangkaja Cihna. In the existing folklore, his Chinese wife was named Kang Ci Wi, namely a daughter of trader from China.

Then, the words Bali-Ing-Kang were combined into Balingkang. In the chronicle of Ulun Danu Batur

Temple (Batur Temple) of Kinta-mani is mentioned about Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar or Kongco Cong Po Kong, where Empu Liem became the prominent assistant to teach war strategy and governed with principles of Asta Brata. One of the war strategy relics is im-mortalized in the dance of Baris Dadap, Baris Tumbak, Baris Perisi or Baris Tamiang, Baris Bajra to Baris Cina. Baris or warrior dance represents knighthood. Strong Chinese influence is evidenced at a number of villages in Kintamani having geographical names derived from Mandarin words.

For example, the name of Pingan village is actually derived from the word Ping An meaning safety. Son-gan village comes from the Song An, Siakin village from the Sia In and Paketan village from Paket

An. Early Chinese settlers also got farmland at Payangan and they gave litchi seedlings to the King of Bali. The tradition of gallivanting show (ngelawang) is also similar to the tradition of Chinese Lion Dance coming from one house to another. Many kinds of ornamental styles used to embellish the house and furniture in Bali are also adopted from Chinese arts.

Such diverse influences have been widely recognized as native culture to Bali. Even, Balinese traders believe that Kongco Cong Po Kong or Ida Ratu Gede Ngurah Subandar in Kintamani is a protec-tor that gives blessing to their trade. Likewise, the couple of deities called Rambut Sedana symbolized with the effigies made of perforated coins are believed to give a blessing to family. (puj)

him with an instruction to invoke holy water in the cave where he meditated. Having got the holy water, it was then presented to the queen. Unexpectedly, the queen finally could get pregnant.

Later, the queen gave birth to twin children named Sri Masula-Sri Masuli. Since the king felt indebted,

he then erected a temple in the cave. Later on, the temple was handed over to Mengwi Palace and then to Sading Palace. The structure of Kereban Langit temple is very simple. In the innermost courtyard lie some shrines like the Ratu Gede Lingsir, Ratu Made and Ratu Ayu. In front of the padma (lotus) shrine

stand some guard statues and terra-cotta statues. Meanwhile, a padma shrine lies in the middle courtyard. Then, in the outermost courtyard near the riverside stand the repre-sentative shrines such as that of Ida Batara Ratu Gede Dalem Ped and Ida Batara Ratu Bolong.

The three-time ex-premier and media mogul, who also faces a ban from public office, said he would not resist criticizing the verdict against him, nor the judg-es who passed it, calling Italian magistrates “irresponsible.”

Berlusconi looked energized and appeared to speaking off the cuff throughout the 15-minute rally in front of his Rome resi-dence, in contrast to his nine-minute video address after last week’s ruling in which he ap-peared shaken and on the verge of tears as he read a prepared statement.

The crowd, many of whom arrived on buses during the day, waved flags and posters urging Berlusconi, 76, not to give up and declaring support from cit-ies and regions throughout Italy. Supporters repeatedly chanted:

“Silvio.”“I don’t believe that anyone

can come and say to us that this is a subversive demonstration, as many have said,” Berlusconi said. “And no one can come and say, as they have, that we are irresponsible. Because we have said loud and clear that the government needs to continue to approve economic measures that we have requested.”

The confirmation of Berlusco-ni’s conviction on final appeal has put more stress on Premier Enrico Letta’s uneasy cross-party coalition government, which requires the support of both Berlusconi’s conservative forces and the center-left to pass urgent economic measures.

Berlusconi said the last few days were “the most anguished and painful of my life,” and he

thanked supporters for demon-strating their affection. “I am here. I am staying here. I won’t give up,” Berlusconi said.

Italy’s highest court on Thurs-day upheld Berlusconi’s four-year prison sentence, the first time that the media mogul was definitively convicted and sen-tenced in two decades of trials and other criminal probes.

A law to reduce prison over-crowding slashes his sentence to one year and since he is over 70, he can choose home confinement or perform social services instead of going to prison.

He also faces a public office ban, which would deprive him of his Senate seat and prevent him from running in elections for the duration of the ban. Another appeals court in Milan has been ordered to decide its length.

DARWIN, Australia - The Darwin Cup was canceled after a female jockey died from her injuries following a fall near the finish of the sixth race on Monday. Darwin Turf Club chairman Brett Dixon said Simone Montgomerie fell from her mount, Riahgrand, and sustained “traumatic injuries” in the home straight.

Montgomerie, a 26-year-old mother of two, was treated by doc-tors at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“It is with great regret that we were advised by the family that Si-mone passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital,” Dixon said. “Stewards agreed it was best to abandon the meeting in order to begin an investigation into this tragic event.

“As far as the Darwin Turf Club is concerned, she was our family, and we’re all devastated by this accident.”

Montgomerie was a seasoned jockey who had been racing in the Northern Territory since 2010 and domestic media reported that her 27 winners in the last season made her the premier jockey in the northern Australian province.

Her father, Peter Montgomerie, trained 2005 Melbourne Cup runner-up On A Jeune. Adam Giles, the Northern Territory’s chief minister, said Montgomerie “was a champion jockey at the top of her game and a pioneer of women in racing who will be sorely missed.”

“This is a sad day for the Australian racing industry,” Giles said. The accident happened only two days after the National Jockeys Celebration day was held by the National Jockeys Trust, which provides support for families of riders who have been killed or injured in racing accidents.

National Jockeys’ Association general manager Des O’Keeffe said the organization would support Montgomerie’s family and offered counseling to other jockeys.

“It is unbelievable that this has happened just two days after National Jockeys Celebration day around the country,” he said. “I have had many jockeys ring me and they are absolutely shattered.”

Paulo Henrique Machado has lived almost his entire life in hospital. As a baby he suffered infantile paralysis brought on by polio, and he is still hooked up to an artificial respirator 24 hours a day. But despite this, he has trained as a computer animator and is now creating a television series about his life.

The Brazilian’s first memories are of exploring the hospital he has lived in for 45 years by wheelchair.

“I explored up and down the corridors, going into the rooms of other children that were here - that is how I discovered my ‘universe’,” he says.

“For me, playing football or with normal toys wasn’t an option, so it was more about using my imagination.”

Machado’s mother died when he was two days old, and as a baby he contracted polio - the result of one of the last big outbreaks of the disease in Brazil.

The children on the ‘polio ward’ in the Clinicas Hospital The children on the ‘polio ward’ in the Clinicas Hospital

Ligia Marcia Fizeto, Machado’s nursing assistant, began working in the hospital - Sao Paulo’s Clinicas - shortly after he arrived.

“It was very sad to see all those children, all lying there immobilised in their beds, or with very little movement,” she says.

In the 1970s, children with polio were encased in a “torpedo” - a body-encasing iron lung - and doctors at the hospital gave grim assessments of the children’s prospects. Few in the “polio ward” were expected to reach adolescence - their life expectancy was just 10 years.

With very limited mobility, Machado’s world formed around the friends he made on the ward. “There was me, Eliana, Pedrinho, Anderson, Claudia, Luciana and Tania. They were here for a good length of time too, more than 10 years,” he says.

Sun unleashed a strong finish to power to victory in the 1,500-meter freestyle, adding to wins earlier this week in the 400 and 800 at the Palau Sant Jordi indoor pool.

When asked if this meant he was the “King of Freestyle,” Sun said he isn’t keen to take on that moniker - as snazzy as it sounds. Besides, the ques-tion was redundant.

While the women - led by Ameri-can teenagers Missy Franklin and Ka-tie Ledecky - made most of the waves with all six world records set by female swimmers, Sun won the official title as the meet’s top male swimmer.

“This night is an amazing night for me in my swimming life,” Sun said through a translator. “During the com-petition tonight I felt very tired. It’s very hard to get these performances. (But) I have never had the feeling of being the King of Freestyle.”

Never headed after the first lap in the 400 and 800, Sun’s biggest chal-lenge came on the competition’s last day from Ryan Cochrane of Canada. Cochrane went in front by the 250-meter mark and held a slender lead until Sun surged past him on the next-

to-last lap to finish in 14 minutes, 41 seconds and win by 1.33 seconds.

“My training has not been so systematic, so it was a pretty tough race,” Sun said. “I really appreciated my opponent pushed me, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to make it. After all my races, I felt a bit fatigued. But I just tried to convince myself to stay with him because I knew that in the last 100 I had the advantage.”

This was the fourth time Cochrane has taken silver behind Sun in the 800 and 1,500 at the worlds and Olympics.

“I think to race a guy who has gone 14:30 you know he will have the back-end speed, or speed at any stage of the race. So I knew I had to push the pace and get ahead, but it wasn’t far enough,” Cochrane said. “I think to have somebody that pushes the event is very positive, even though it can be frustrating to get second year after year. But it’s exciting and invigorating for the event itself.”

The 21-year-old Sun won the 800 and 1,500 at the 2011 worlds in Shanghai, while claiming silver in the

400. He took gold in the 400 and 1,500 at the 2012 London Olympics, which doesn’t include the 800 as an event.

Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy took the bronze on Sunday, ahead of American pair Connor Jaeger and Michael McB-room. Jaeger described Sun as a “super

friendly guy” and applauded his ability to save that extra energy for the end of the most grueling pool race.

“That’s what he’s great at,” Jaeger said. “He can go hard and he can still sprint at the end, and that’s what you need in long races like this. It has paid

off for him - and that’s what Katie (Ledecky) does. So maybe it’s some-thing we need to learn.”

McBroom, who captued silver behind Sun in the 800 on Wednes-day, also applauded the Chinese’s character.

CARLSBAD, California - Sam Stosur won the Southern California Open on Sun-day for her first title in nearly two years, beating top-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-3. The fifth-seeded Stosur of Australia had lost all of her previous eight matches against Azarenka, winning only two sets.

The win was Stosur’s fourth career singles title and the first since she won her only major, the 2011 U.S. Open.

“I think this is a huge boost for me,” said Stosur. “I haven’t had great results for really all year, so to be able to bounce back and come away with this is really exciting and a good boost going into the last slam of the year.”

Later Sunday, Azarenka withdrew from Rogers Cup in Toronto because of a lower back injury. “I’m so disappointed that I can’t make it to Toronto as I added it to my schedule knowing what an important event it is,” Azarenka said. “I am sorry to all my Canadian fans and I will work hard to get healthy and back on the courts as soon as possible.”

Azarenka, the two-time Australian Open champion, played another loose match, com-mitting 32 unforced errors including seven

double faults, and had only 11 winners.“I think I was taking too many wrong

kind of decisions or too risky decisions when there was no need to be risky,” she said. “I didn’t try to sometimes stay in the rally. I just wanted to make what sometimes I can make with eyes closed. (Sunday) I didn’t do it with open eyes.”

Stosur, playing in her first final since October, hit 20 winners compared to 29 un-forced errors, but played the key points well, including saving 11 of 12 break points.

“That was a really big part of the match,” Stosur said. “That first set, she did have lots of opportunities. I think nearly all of them except one I hit a really good first serve in and she didn’t make the ball into play.”

Stosur, ranked No. 13, requested and was granted a wild-card into the event after she lost her opening-round match last week at Stanford in the Bank of the West Classic. Stosur had victories over No. 4-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and the third-ranked Azarenka, the first time she has defeated two top-five players in an event since the 2011 WTA Championships.

“You can practice all you want, but at some point, you got to put it into play in matches,” Stosur said. “That was the reason-ing behind coming here. You got to put your-

self under that pressure of playing matches. That’s why I came, and obviously now, very, very pleased with that decision.”

Azarenka, who will move into the No. 2 ranking ahead of Maria Sharapova on Mon-day, was playing her first tournament since withdrawing from Wimbledon with a right knee injury before her second-round match.

Azarenka set the tone early when she didn’t win a point on her first service game of the match, including consecutive double faults to give Stosur a 2-0 lead. She then scored her only break of the match on Stosur’s serve in the next game before the Aussie broke back for a 3-1 lead.

In a key game, Stosur fended off five break points in the next game to hold her serve and take a 4-1 lead en route to winning the first set. Stosur held a huge advantage with her serve in the set over one of the game’s best returners. Stosur, who had six aces, won 73 percent of her first serves com-pared to Azarenka, who won just 43 percent. Azarenka was even worse on her second serves, winning only 30 percent.

Azarenka improved her game slightly in the second set as the pair were on serve until Stosur struck with the only service break in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead. Stosur improved her record in finals to 4-12.

TEL AVIV - Israeli President Shimon Peres inadvertently kicked a ball straight into the midriff of startled Barcelona striker Lionel Messi as he launched a soccer event by the Spanish league champions in Tel Aviv on Sunday.

East peace through sport and were making a brief stopover in Israel and the Palestinian territories en-route to a pre-season tour of Asia.

“Your message is play football and make friends, don’t make war and make enemies,” he said before advising the young spectators to watch carefully because “I believe

that a day will come and one of you will be like Messi.”

Israel’s head of state then pro-ceeded to kick off the event by intending to pass the ball to Messi, but surprised the Argentinian striker by shooting it directly into his mid-riff. Messi appeared unfazed by the shot.

Earlier, the players visited Ju-daism’s revered Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City and listened to speeches by top dignitaries, including Prime Minster Benja-min Netanyahu, before holding the clinic on a sultry afternoon in Tel Aviv.

On Saturday, Barca’s stars wowed crowds in the occupied West Bank where they paid a visit to Jesus’s traditional birthplace in Bethlehem, met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and held a training clinic with young

Palestinian children.When announcing the planned

trip in February, Barca said they wanted to play a friendly match against a side made up equally of Palestinian and Israeli players in Tel Aviv but the Middle Eastern neighbours could not agree on ar-rangements for the fixture.

Even though they live side by side, Israeli and Palestinian teams do not play each other in competition, as Israel are members of European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, and the Palestinians play in Asia.

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Kevin De Bruyne and An-dre Schuerlle scored to lead Chelsea past AC Milan 2-0 on Sunday to advance to the final of the Inter-national Champions Cup. Chelsea will face Real Madrid in the final at Miami on Wednesday. AC Milan will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third-place game earlier the same night.

De Bruyne opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 29th minute when he took a pass from Eden Hazard, hit the crossbar and then knocked the rebound across inside the left post.

Schuerlle sealed the win in the second minute of stoppage time, taking a pass from Victor Mosses from the left side and sending the ball inside the right post.

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United has rejected a second offer from Chelsea for unsettled striker Wayne Rooney. United says the club received a bid, reported in the British media to be about 25 million pounds ($38.4 million), but it was “immediately rejected.”

United says “our position remains that he is not for sale.” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho confirmed last month that the London club had made an official cash bid for Rooney.

The England international has been pushing for a move since ex-pressing his frustration to United about his lack of playing time toward the end of last season.

But both Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, who succeeded his fellow Scot as manager in May, have insisted Rooney is not for sale since he has two years left on his contract.

PARIS — Former Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leon-ardo says the French football federation forced out of the club. Leonardo resigned in July, a little over a month after he was sus-pended for shoving a referee following a home match.

The Brazilian says the sentence was “very difficult for me to accept” and “what they did to me was very unjust.”

He adds “It was impossible to continue to do my work ... I was the main man responsible for the project at PSG, but everything became too complicated with this suspension.”

In May, Leonardo was handed a nine-month ban after he ap-peared to deliberately barge into referee Alexandre Castro follow-ing a 1-1 home draw. The suspension was later extended to June 30, 2014, after a failed appeal.

SAO PAULO — Dutch mid-fielder Clarence Seedorf scored his fourth goal in this year’s Brazilian league Sunday to help Botafogo defeat Vasco da Gama 3-2 and stay atop the standings.

Striker Rafael Marques scored the other two goals for Botafogo, which reached 23 points with its third victory in the last four rounds, and seventh in 11 matches played so far. Vasco’s goals at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro were both scored by forward Andre.

Second-place Cruzeiro stayed two points behind Botafogo by de-feating third-place Coritiba 1-0 on Saturday at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte. Midfielder Luan scored the winner to give Cruzeiro its fourth win in five matches.

Botafogo, seeking its first Bra-zilian title since 1995, opened the scoring with Rafael Marques in the 23rd minute and Seedorf increased the lead seven minutes later with

a right-footed shot from inside the area. It was Seedorf’s first goal at the Maracana.

“It’s an honor to score at a stadium with such an incredible history, where greats like Zico and Junior used to play,” the veteran midfielder said.

Andre pulled Vasco closer in the 44th and netted the equalizer just two minutes into the second half, but Rafael Marques put Botafogo ahead again a minute later by drib-bling past a defender inside the box and firing a right-footed shot into the top corner.

Vasco’s World Cup-veteran playmaker Juninho was injured midway through the second half, but could not be replaced because Vasco had already made three sub-stitutions. He stayed on the field but limped until the final whistle with an apparent right-leg muscle injury.

Defending champion Flumin-ense conceded an 85th-minute goal in a 1-1 draw at Ponte Preta, drop-

ping to 11th in the 20-team stand-ings. Brazil striker Fred missed a penalty late in the first half, when the match was still scoreless.

Also Sunday, Porto Alegre rivals Gremio and Internacional played to a 1-1 draw at the Arena Gremio. Argentine striker Hernan Barcos opened the scoring by converting a penalty in the 18th, but Internacional equalized just two minutes later thanks to striker Leandro Damiao. Internacional had two players sent off late in the second half, while Gremio had a player sent off in injury time.

Internacional, fourth in the standings, featured the debut of Argentine striker Ignacio Scocco when he replaced Uruguay forward Diego Forlan in the 69th.

Club world champion Corin-thians beat Criciuma 2-0 in Santa Catarina to win its second in a row and move to seventh in the stand-ings, just six points off the lead. Peru striker Paolo Guerrero opened the scoring in the 25th.

The low-intensity blast hap-pened at the Ekayana Buddhist Centre on Sunday evening, police said.

Local media reported the device went off inside next to a glass door but had caused little damage. A second device emitted smoke but failed to explode, national police chief detective Sutarman said.

Neither police nor the centre said who may have been behind the blasts.

There has been growing anger in Indonesia, which has the world’s biggest Muslim population, at the plight of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

“It was clearly explosive materi-als but of very low intensity,” said Sutarman, who like many Indone-sians goes by one name.

“They were placed at a glass door, which was broken.” How-ever, the centre said in a statement that there was “no damage at all”.

National police spokesman Ronny Sompie added that the blast “injured one person, who sustained an abrasion to the hand”.

Police, including members of the bomb squad and the elite counter-terror unit, were at the scene, he said.

The temple, one of the biggest in Jakarta, said it hoped the blasts would “not cause any unrest in the religious community”.

Police in May foiled a plot to bomb the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta by Islamic hardliners as anger grew over the plight of the Rohingya.

Several outbreaks of violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar have tempered interna-tional optimism about the country’s dramatic political reforms as it emerges from decades of military rule.

Scream of RohingyaA bomb that exploded at a

Buddhist temple in the Indonesian capital Jakarta bore the words “we are responding to the screams of the Rohingya”, the place of wor-ship said Monday.

It appeared to be the latest out-burst of anger in Muslim-majority Indonesia at the plight of Rohingya Muslims, who have been fleeing in their thousands from sectarian

violence in Myanmar, where most of the population is Buddhist.

The low-intensity bomb, con-taining pieces of iron and ball bear-ings, went off late Sunday inside the Ekayana Buddhist temple as hundreds of worshippers prayed, lightly injuring one person who received cuts to an arm and leg.

A second bomb was also set but only emitted smoke and failed to go off, according to police. The attack caused only minimal damage.

Temple official Ponijan Liaw told AFP that CCTV footage showed a man wearing a white shirt entering the temple and plac-ing two green packages with the bombs inside next to two doors before leaving.

The blast happened shortly af-terwards, he said.

One package bore the words “we are responding to the screams of the Rohingya”, Liaw said, add-ing the footage had been handed over to police.

National police spokesman Ronny Sompie said authorities were still investigating the mo-tive behind the attack and could not comment on who might be responsible.

Religious Affairs Minister Sury-adharma Ali said the bombing “was a provocation aimed at pitting Muslims against Buddhists.

“I’m sure Muslims and Bud-dhists will not be affected. Re-lations between Muslims and Buddhists are good and as far as I know, there’s never been a conflict between Muslims and Buddhists in Indonesia.”

Security Minister Djoko Suyan-to condemned the perpetrators for ruining “the peace of Ramadan”, the Muslim holy month which comes to an end later this week with the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

“The security forces have been or-dered to immediately hunt down and arrest the perpetrators,” he added.

Police in May foiled a plot to bomb the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta by Islamic hardliners as anger grew over the plight of the Rohingya.

Several outbreaks of sectarian unrest in Myanmar have tempered international optimism about the country’s dramatic political re-forms as it emerges from decades of military rule.

SYDNEY - The Australian govern-ment Monday pledged a fresh Aus$200 million (US$177 million) bailout package for the car manufacturing in-dustry as it looks to shore up struggling sectors to help the economy transition away from a mining boom.

Industry Minister Kim Carr said the funds would ensure the “auto-motive manufacturing sector has a strong future and continues to provide high-skill, high-wage jobs for Austra-lians”.

The announcement came on the opening day of a five-week election campaign that will culminate in na-tional polls on September 7, with the ruling Labor party facing an uphill battle against the conservative op-position.

“The motor vehicle manufactur-ing industry in this country provides thousands of jobs, billions of dollars in export income and investment and benefits in research and development,” said Carr.

“Our actions will provide crucial ongoing support for an industry that has been under considerable pressure with a high Australian dollar over an extended period and an increasingly competitive global market.”

The auto manufacturing sector employs more than 50,000 people in Australia with another 250,000 jobs in associated industries.

But it has struggled, until very recently, with the Australian dollar trading near or above parity with the greenback for almost two years, squeezing exports and compounding rising production costs.

Canberra extended a Aus$3.2 bil-lion bailout to the ailing sector at the height of the global economic down-turn and provided additional lifelines to Ford and Holden last year.

But it was not enough to prevent Ford from announcing in May that it will stop making vehicles in the coun-try by 2016.

General Motors subsidiary Holden, which in April announced a plan to slash 500 jobs, and Toyota are the two remain-ing major players in the industry.

Carr said he was consulting with car makers and associated manufacturers about how best to spend the money.

BRUSSELS - Hopes that the eurozone economy is well on the road to recovery rose on Monday with better-than-expected results from a key growth indicator.

expansion.In Germany, rates of increase

in manufacturing output and ser-vice sector activity hit 17- and five-month highs respectively, London-based Markit said.

The other main national econ-omies of France, Italy and Spain each registered a further easing of contraction, with solid growth among manufacturers.

“The final Output Index read-ing of 50.5 confirms a welcome return to growth for the euro-

zone economy at the start of the third quarter, raising hopes that the region can finally claw its way out of its longest-running recession,” said Rob Dobson, Senior Economist at Markit.

“Granted, the euro area has experienced false dawns before -- but the improvements in confi-dence and other forward-looking indicators warrant at least some optimism for the outlook this time around.”

a first, minuscule drop in overall numbers of unemployed people for more than two years -- by 24,000 to 19.26 million in June.

The eurozone has been seen as the main drag on the world economy over the past couple of years as austerity policies adopted to tame the debt crisis have crippled growth.

“The labour market remains the main bugbear of the euro-zone, as rising joblessness hurts growth and raises political and social tensions,” Dobson added.

“But even here there was some better news, with the rate of job cutting easing to a 16-month low.”

President Hasan Rouhani spoke after being sworn in as president in an open session of parliament, capping a weekend that saw him endorsed by Ayatollah Ali Khame-nei, Iran’s supreme leader.

Rouhani, a moderate cleric who won a landslide victory in the June 14 presidential elections, continued his call for dialogue with the West while asking foreign powers to re-spect Iran in its negotiations.

“If you seek a suitable answer, speak to Iran through the language of respect, not through the language of sanctions,” the president said in a speech broadcast live by Iranian state television. He later added that any negotiations would require “bi-lateral trust building, mutual respect and the lessening of hostilities.”

Iran is under United Nations sanctions as well as unilateral West-ern oil and banking sanctions over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used to power reactors producing electricity or build nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear program is

peaceful and geared towards gener-ating electricity and producing radio-isotopes to treat cancer patients.

Rouhani replaces President Mah-moud Ahmadinejad, who struck a hard-line approach when dealing with the West and its sanctions over the nuclear program. The sanctions have hit the country’s vital oil exports and blocked transactions on interna-tional banking networks. Inflation is running at more than 35 percent. The Iranian rial has lost more than two-thirds of its value against the U.S. dollar since late 2011.

Many Iranians and foreign dip-lomats hope that Rouhani, a former top nuclear negotiator, can strike a more conciliatory tone in negotia-tions. Those hopes could be seen by the attendance at his swearing in, as the audience included lead-ers and other representatives from more than 50 countries. It was the first time since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution that foreign dignitaries attended the swearing-in ceremony of an Iranian president.

In Washington, White House

spokesman Jay Carney said Rou-hani’s inauguration represented “an opportunity for Iran to act quickly to resolve the international com-munity’s deep concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.”

“Should this new government choose to engage substantively and seriously to meet its international

obligations and find a peaceful solu-tion to this issue, it will find a will-ing partner in the United States,” Carney said in a statement.

During his speech, Rouhani said Iran opposes “any change in politi-cal systems through foreign inter-vention.” Iran is a close ally of Syr-ian President Bashar Assad, whose

country remains in the grips of a bloody two-year civil war. Assad’s government has received fighters from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, helping government forces gain ground in recent weeks.

“Peace and stability in all neigh-boring regions is a need and neces-sity for Iran,” Rouhani said.

ISLAMABAD — Heavy rains that caused flash floods and collapsed houses in different parts of Pakistan have killed 53 people over the past three days, an official said Monday.

Civil and military authorities have launched rescue and relief efforts to deal with the crisis, said Brig. Kamran Zia, a senior member of the National Disaster Management Authority. He said the deaths from the flooding span the entire country.

Twelve people were killed in the semiautonomous tribal region in the northwest, eight in neighboring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and three in the Pakistan-held part of the disputed Kashmir region. Twelve people also died in central Punjab province, 10 in southwestern Baluchistan, and eight in southern Sindh.

Flooding was especially bad in Paki-stan’s largest city, Karachi, because of the southern city’s faulty drainage system, Zia said. The same storm system hit Af-ghanistan, killing at least 58 people.

Pakistan regularly suffers from flood-ing during the monsoon season, which usually runs through July and August. The country suffered the worst floods in its 66-year history in 2010, when floodwaters inundated one-fifth of the country, killing over 1,700 people. More than 20 million people were affected at the time.

Also Monday, a bomb exploded on a passenger train in central Punjab prov-ince, wounding 14 people, three of them seriously, said provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah. The bomb was hidden in a washroom on the train, which was headed to Karachi, said Sanaullah.

Meanwhile, security forces were on high alert in Pakistan’s capital, Islam-abad, because of intelligence indicating militants may stage attacks in the city, said Interior Ministry spokesman Omar Hamid Khan.

ONE of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings was in possession of right-wing American literature in the run-up to the attack, BBC Panorama has learnt. Tamerlan Tsarnaev subscribed to publications espousing white supremacy and government conspiracy theories.

He also had reading material on mass killings. Until now the Tsarnaev brothers were widely perceived as just self-styled radical jihadists.

Panorama has spent months speaking exclusively with friends of the bombers to try to understand the roots of their radicalisation.

‘Government conspiracies’The programme discovered that Tamerlan Tsarnaev

possessed articles which argued that both 9/11 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing were government con-spiracies. Another in his possession was about “the rape of our gun rights”.

Reading material he had about white supremacy commented that “Hitler had a point”. Tamerlan Tsarnaev also had literature which explored what motivated mass killings and noted how the perpetrators murdered and maimed calmly.

There was also material about US drones killing civilians, and about the plight of those still imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.

After a poky but productive start, Curiosity recently pointed its wheels south, rolling toward the base of Mount Sharp in a jour-ney that will last many months. Expect Curiosity to channel its inner tourist as it drives across the rock-strewn landscape, dodg-ing bumps and taking in the scenery.

“We do a lot of off-roading on a lot of little dirt roads,” said mis-sion manager Jennifer Trosper. Curiosity will unpack its toolkit once it arrives at its destination to hunt for the organic building blocks of life.

Scientists have been eager for a peek of Mount Sharp since Cu-riosity, the size of a small SUV, touched down in an ancient crater near the Martian equator on the night of Aug. 5, 2012.

SAN FRANCISCO — Dell Inc. delayed Friday’s vote on founder Michael Dell’s plan to take the com-puter maker private. The postpone-ment came after Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners added a special dividend of 13 cents per share on top of an already sweetened bid of $24.6 billion, or $13.75 per share. They originally had offered $24.4 billion, or $13.65 per share.

The company is now giving share-holders until Sept. 12 to consider the offer. The meeting will be held at

LOS ANGELES — Mount Sharp has beckoned Curiosity since the NASA rover made its grand entrance on Mars exactly a year ago, dangling from nylon cables to a safe landing. If mi-crobes ever existed on Mars, the mountain represents the best hope for preserving the chemical ingredients that are fundamental to all living things.

Choices: Closer look at 2 plans for Dell’s futureDell’s headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin.

Activist investor Carl Icahn and the Southeastern Asset Management fund, which own 13 percent of the company combined, are trying to defeat Michael Dell’s offer in hopes of persuading shareholders to back a competing proposal. Here’s a closer look at the two plans:

MICHAEL DELL/SILVER LAKE

As has been the case since it was struck, the deal would take the

company private if it’s approved. Michael Dell, the CEO and the largest shareholder, is throwing in all of his stock and $750 million of his $15 billion fortune to help finance the sale to a group led by investment firm Silver Lake. Dell’s stock-and-cash contributions to the deal are valued at about $4.5 billion. The plan calls for paying for most of this through loans, including $2 billion from longtime Dell partner Microsoft Corp.

As an additional enticement, Mi-chael Dell and Silver Lake will pay stockholders a one-time dividend of 13 cents per share. Michael Dell and Silver Lake also are guaranteeing payment of Dell’s regularly sched-uled dividend of 8 cents per share for the fiscal quarter ending in early November.

In exchange for ensuring share-holders will receive the extra mon-ey, Michael Dell and Silver Lake received a key concession. Dell’s board agreed that the deal can go through as long as it gains support from a majority of votes cast, ex-cluding Michael Dell’s nearly 16 percent stake in the company. The original bid required a majority of all outstanding stock excluding Mi-chael Dell’s stake, a provision that meant that abstentions counted as a part of the opposition.

Dell’s board also changed the voting eligibility. All sharehold-ers holding company stock as of Aug. 13 can cast ballots instead of the previous cutoff date of June

3. That creates a new pool of vot-ers, including many investors who bought the stock in the past few months and stand to profit from the sweetened offer.

If it succeeds: Michael Dell is hoping to evolve the company into a more diversified seller of technol-ogy services, business software and high-end computers — much the way IBM Corp. had successfully transformed itself in the 1990s. He believes he has a better chance of turning the company around in the long run if it didn’t have to worry about Wall Street’s quarter-to-quarter expectations.

Criticisms: Some big investors still oppose the deal. Icahn believes the offer undervalues the company’s long-term prospects and gives Mi-chael Dell and his backers an unfair opportunity to profit from a turn-around. The deal would saddle Dell with more than $15 billion in debt, which could raise doubts about its financial stability among its risk-averse corporate customers.

The status: The plan has the backing of Dell’s board. Michael Dell won’t be able to vote his nearly 16 percent stake in the company, so the deal will need a majority of the remaining shareholders who submit ballots. Shareholders representing at least 20 percent of the votes were known to be in opposition before the offer was raised and the special dividend was added.

CARL ICAHN/SOUTH-

EASTERN ASSET MANAGE-MENT

Icahn and Southeastern Asset have proposed that the company buy back 1.1 billion shares at $14 each. They added another element last month that would give stockholders warrants to buy additional shares. Icahn has valued his plan at $15.50 to $18 per share. That plan calls for rewarding shareholders with some cash now, but leaving about a third of the shares out-standing for shareholders to benefit from a successful turnaround.

If it succeeds: Icahn and South-eastern want to replace the Dell board with their own slate of candidates and put their plan in effect. Icahn plans to oust Michael Dell as CEO, but hasn’t said whom he has in mind to run the company. To pull off his mutiny, Icahn needs to have Dell’s annual meeting held on Sept. 12, the same day that shareholders are scheduled to vote on Michael Dell’s deal.

But Dell’s board has scheduled the annual meeting for Oct. 17. Icahn is suing in Delaware court to force that date to be changed.

Criticisms: A special committee of Dell’s board calls the plan risky and short on details. One shareholder-advisory firm, Glass, Lewis & Co., says the certainty of a cash payout under the Michael Dell plan is better than the risk in continuing to hold Dell shares.

The status: No vote has been scheduled, and it may never happen unless Icahn can prevail in court.

Curiosity would nail its landing, which involved an acrobatic plunge through the thin atmo-sphere that ended with it being gently lowered to the ground with cables.

Engineers had to invent new tricks since Curiosity was too massive to bounce to a land-ing cocooned in airbags — the preferred choice for previous rovers Spirit and Opportunity. After seven terrifying minutes, a voice echoed through mission control at the NASA Jet Propul-sion Laboratory. “Touchdown confirmed,” said engineer Allen Chen. “We’re safe on Mars.”

Scientists and engineers clad in matching sky-blue polo shirts erupted in cheers. Some were so excited that they overshot their high-fives.

Curiosity became a pop sensa-

tion. Several of Curiosity’s han-dlers including Bobak “Mohawk Guy” Ferdowsi became science rock stars.

The technical prowess required to pull off such a landing has “captured the imagination of a whole new generation of prospec-tive explorers,” said American University space policy profes-sor Howard McCurdy, who has closely followed the $2.5 billion mission.

Mission scientist Sushil Atreya of the University of Michigan remained calm until the last ten seconds. “Then it hit me — it’s crazy! It was an unbelievable feeling of relief when the first picture from the rover came down,” Atreya said.

Mike Malin, who operates Curiosity’s cameras, ticked off two of his favorite pictures from

the mission so far: A view of the rover’s heat shield falling away right before landing and a color portrait of Mount Sharp.

“That looks so much like Utah that it felt very familiar,” said Malin, who heads Malin Space Science Systems.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Want to build a new home for Homer or try out a new hairstyle for Marge?

Danish toy company Lego on Monday confirmed it will launch a special series themed on “The Simpsons” family globally in 2014.

Lego spokesman Roar Rude Trangbaek wouldn’t give any details about what characters would be in-cluded, but said the company hopes the series will “appeal to fans of ‘The Simpsons’ family.”

Lego, a privately held Danish company, has seen its sales soar in recent years after it started making series based on popular movies such as “Star Wars” and “Ninjago.”

“The Simpsons” has been on the air for 22 years, becoming the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program and a cultural phenomenon with colleges devoting courses to studying it.

The picture is based on a graphic novel of the same name and features Washing-ton as a DEA agent and Wahlberg as a Naval Intelligence officer who must team up for an undercover operation involving drug traffickers and the CIA.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said “2 Guns” opened at the studio’s expectations and attributed the film’s success to Icelandic director Bal-tasar Kormakur and the first-time pairing of Washington and Wahlberg.

“It was super casting,” she said. “There was remarkable chemistry. The

two of them work so well together. You see it on screen. Baltasar really gave them the energy to be able to do what they did in this film.”

Fox’s Japan-set superhero flick “The Wolverine” starring Hugh Jackman as the clawed warrior scratched out the No. 2 spot with $21.7 million in its second weekend, bringing the Marvel icon’s total domestic haul to $95 million. “Wol-verine” earned another $38.5 million in 67 international territories.

“The Smurfs 2” launched in the No. 3 position with $18.2 million. While Sony’s

kid-friendly computer-generated sequel based on the blue-hued cartoon franchise debuted below expectations in North America, “Smurfs 2” earned a bright $52.5 million in 43 international markets.

“It is one of those films that seems to resonate on every continent,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. “We have about 36 big ter-ritories to go, including China. They love the blue ones.”

The Warner Bros. haunted house tale “The Conjuring” crossed the $100 mil-lion mark at No. 4 domestically after exorcising $13.7 million in its third weekend.

Elsewhere at the box office, Sundance Film Festival favorite “The Spectacular Now” starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley earned $190,000 in four the-aters in its debut weekend, while “The Canyons” made just $16,000 at two theaters, though “Canyons” distributor IFC Films said the erotic thriller starring Lindsay Lohan is performing strongly through video-on-demand services.

Other smaller films continued to per-form solidly at the box office, including Sundance winner “Fruitvale Station” with $2.7 million in 1,086 theaters and director Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” with $2 million in 50 theaters.

“Summer is not just about block-busters,” said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com. “It’s also about Woody Allen. It’s about specialized films that challenge the au-dience — or are just different from the traditional, cookie-cutter, summer-style movie.” Overall ticket sales this weekend were up more than 15 percent over the same weekend last summer, Dergara-bedian said.

LOS ANGELES — The action-packed “2 Guns” is No. 1 at the week-end box office. The Universal film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg pulled the trigger to capture the top spot with $27.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
