People Salt Source Associa-tion (Pugar) consultant from Panji Sakti Singaraja University, I Wayan Rideng, last Wednesday (14/12) stated the salt association group in this village got central government aid of IDR 800 million which hoped can increase salt produc-tion in quality and quantity. Sadly this aid is only at Pejarakan when actually there are a number of Bule-leng shores that has the potential like Kubutambahan and Tejakula. Rideng hoped the aid will be given to these areas too so salt production

in Buleleng can increase the people prosperity.

Rideng continued and stated that Buleleng salt production seemed not maximal due to many problems the farmers are facing such as human resource, tech-nology knowledge and capital especially technology in market-ing wise. All this time salt was packaged in a simple way sold to be consumed when actually if its packaged well it could be exported as a spa and batik material caus-ing it sold IDR 500 per kilogram.

“When actually in Korea salt price is IDR 250,000 per kilogram,” Rideng explained.

Head of Buleleng Fishery and Sea Agency, Nyoman Sutrisna, revealed Pejarakan salt production at Pejarakan was managed by 125 farmers which at this time to maxi-mise the salt potential they should increase human resource also to do evaluation such as identifying salt results all this time which right now just reached 75 tonnes per hectare although ideally national standard is 80-95 tonnes per hectare. Denpasar (Bali Post) –After Non Smoking Area

Regulation agreed by House of Representatives, Sanglah Hospi-tal being one of the public areas should be a non smoking area and it is being fought for. For sure it has been applied since two years ago and with the regula-tion, Sanglah Human Resources Director, drg. Triputro Nugroho accompanied by Areal Secu-

rity and disciplinary Installation Head, Ferry Dwiyanto, wen met last Wednesday (14/12) Sanglah stated there will be a launch on Non Smoking Area this coming Friday (16/12) in 60 parts of Sanglah Hospital. Efforts such as forbid selling cigarettes have been applied either at canteen or cooperative also workers and visitors socialised not to smoke. “If there are they will be given

a notice and all this time they smoke outside Sanglah’s areal,” Nugroho explained.

Yet if the regulation will be applied, Fery explained that means those who violated the

IDR 50,000 or three months jail.

will be applied at Sanglah Hospi-tal,” Ferry concluded, (san)

Buleleng Regency actually has a huge potential in salt production yet for a long time its regional government did not even think of it causing many salt farmers left it and

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Ahead of Christmas and New Year,

the price of several foodstuffs has in-creased again. The increase is affected by decreasing yield of farmers as the result of bad weather condition. Nyoman Murniati, a foodstuff trader in Badung Market, Wednesday (Dec 14), said that production of farmers especially that brought in from Java decreased during the rainy season. As consequence, col-lectors were unable to meet the market demand in Bali. These conditions had an impact on the increase of their sell-ing prices.

“Moreover, at this time before the celebration of Christmas and New Year 2012, the demand automatically increases. The moment of holiday and

some commodities,” she said.Prices of the foodstuff showing an

increase were such as spices, chicken

condition before the feast day. On aver-age, the price of spices had increased from IDR 1,000 to IDR 2,000 per kg. Large chili had reached IDR 20,000 per kg from the previous price at IDR 18,000 per kg; small chili at IDR 18,000

per kg from previously IDR 17,000 per kg; palm sugar at IDR 9,000 per kg from IDR 8,000 per kg; and tomato at IDR 9,000 per kg whereas previously it was only sold in the range of IDR 6,000 - IDR 7,000 per kg. “Entering the Christmas and New Year, we have not dared to make sure whether it will rise again. If the weather is still not good enough and the yield of harvest is not enough, it is likely to rise again,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Domestic Trade, Bali Trade Agency, Bagus Ketut Wijaya, recently said that based on the experience of Christmas and New Year there was no surge in the demand for basic foodstuffs. Therefore, by the end of this year the circumstance was predicted to be the same. If there were price hikes, they merely related to the law of business behind the busy transactions of the public demand. The increase of selling prices of basic commodities was not caused by the decline in stock, but purely because

midst of holiday.“Related to the price hike in this pe-

riod, government can only suggest the businessmen not to raise the prices,” he said. Similarly, the Bali Trade Agency also reminded to all distributors, not to do price speculation or hoard the stock in the face of Christmas and New Year. (bit)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—A number of petrol stations in Den-

pasar area run out of diesel fuel stock. Observation at several petrol stations on Wednesday (Dec 14) around 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Local Time indicated that some petrol stations posted a sign saying “Sorry, we run out of diesel fuel.” One of the petrol stations on Jalan Kamboja, for example, also posted the same sign if its diesel fuel had run out.

station, Pertamina usually supplied the diesel fuel stocks of 12,000 kiloliters per day but that day only got 8,000 kiloliters.

Similar condition was also seen in the petrol station located on Jalan Gatot Subroto Timur, Denpasar. The station also posted the same sign if the diesel fuel also ran out. As a result, many vehicle drivers were disappointed and left the station. On Tuesday afternoon,

obtain such diesel fuel. It was indicated by many complaints about the empty

supply. Unfortunately, scarcity of the diesel fuel occurred in all the petrol sta-tions along the Jalan IB Mantra Sanur until Nusa Dua area.

Related to the matter, Sales Manager of Pertamina for Bali-Lombok Area, Febrian, when contacted on Wednesday (Dec 14) said that fuel stock in Bali re-mained secure. Therefore, he denied the scarcity of fuel on this Island of the Gods. Even, Pertamina claimed if the volume of fuel delivery to petrol station was in-creased. Previously, the amount of diesel fuel delivery to petrol stations came to 130,000 kiloliters (KL) per day, now it had been increased to 150,000 KL.“The distribution of diesel fuel is still relatively normal, so do not panic. I do hope that people remain tranquil,” he said.

Currently, the number of petrol sta-tions in Bali reached 178 units and their fuel stock remained secure. On that ac-count, his party appealed the people not to worry about the stock of fuel because it was estimated to remain safe until the end of the year. (par)

“Yesterday we raised the flag of Palestine in front of UNESCO and I thanked the president (Herman Van Rompuy) for their support for this endeavour,” Abbas said after meeting the EU president.

“I hope the day will come when we will raise the flag of Palestine at the UN and with the support of the European Union,” he added. The EU is split on the issue, however.

At a vote concerning raising the

flag at the UN’s education, science and culture agency, 11 EU nations voted in favour -- Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Slo-venia and Spain.

Eleven others abstained -- Brit-ain, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Por-tugal, Romania and Slovakia -- and five voted against. They were the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithu-

ania, the Netherlands and Sweden.Meanwhile, the EU’s chief dip-

lomat Catherine Ashton said after a meeting with Abbas that the bloc’s “overarching objective” was “the creation of an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian state, living side by side with Israel in peace and security.

“The EU, along with its Quartet partners, has a key role to play in this process,” she said Wednesday, alluding to the UN, United States and Russia.

“I believe we all share the un-derstanding that ultimately direct negotiations are essential in order to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for state-hood,” she said in a statement.

Britain’s royal family will tour the globe next year to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee marking 60 years on the throne, Buckingham Palace an-nounced on Wednesday.

Prince William and his wife Catherine will travel to the Asia-Pacific region, while heir to the throne Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will visit countries including Australia and Canada, it said.

The queen, 85, and her husband Prince Philip, 90, will remain in Britain but will travel as widely as possible throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the palace said.

“Members of the royal family will travel overseas representing the Queen throughout the Dia-mond Jubilee year, visiting every Realm as well as undertaking visits to Commonwealth coun-tries, Crown Dependencies and

British Overseas Territories,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman said in a statement.

The world tour adds to events at home in Britain marking the ju-bilee, including a massive pageant on the River Thames involving up to 1,000 boats and the lighting of beacons across the country.

In what is likely to be the most high-profile part of the itinerary, William -- the queen’s grandson and second in line to the throne -- will travel with Catherine to Malaysia, Singapore, the Solo-mon Islands and Tuvalu.

The tiny Pacific nation of Tuvalu has not had a royal visit in decades. When the queen and her husband toured it in 1982 they were carried shoulder high by islanders into the capital Funafuti as they sat in canoes.

Prince Harry, William’s young-er brother, will meanwhile make his first solo trip overseas on be-half of the queen, touring Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.

The judge in Malaysian op-position leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case said he would deliver a verdict on January 9 as the long-running and politically charged trial came to a close.

“I will deliver my decision on January 9,” judge Mohamad Zabi-din Diah told a packed courtroom in the capital Kuala Lumpur, setting the stage for a climactic ruling with potentially major implications for pivotal upcoming elections.

Zabidin set the verdict date after allowing defence lawyers a final chance to rebut the prosecution’s

charge that the former deputy prime minister and one-time leader-in-waiting sodomised a 27-year-old male aide in June 2008.

Sodomy is illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia and Anwar, 64, faces up to 20 years in jail if con-victed. Legal experts say a guilty verdict could disqualify Anwar from contesting elections widely expected to be called by Prime Min-ister Najib Razak within months.

Anwar, who was jailed a decade ago on a separate sodomy convic-tion that was later overturned, says the case was cooked up by Najib and is part of a pattern of legal harassment by the long-ruling coali-

tion to ruin him politically. In August, Anwar told the court

that case was a conspiracy by Najib “to send me into political oblivion.”

He says Najib is trying to decapi-tate an opposition alliance of ethnic Malay, Chinese and Muslim parties that has found new strength rallying around the charismatic Anwar and scored historic gains in 2008 polls.

In often lurid testimony, the de-fence has in recent months attacked alleged inconsistencies in state-ments by Anwar’s accused, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and revelations that Saiful had met with Najib before filing a police report.

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for December 3 through 28, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s football association has fined eight clubs for joining a rebel league, an official said Wednesday, in a row that has seen the country’s top club expelled from international competition.

Indonesian football was plunged into chaos last month by the break-away of 18 clubs from the official top-tier Liga Prima, accredited by the Indonesian Football Associa-

tion (PSSI), to revive the rival Liga Super.

International football body FIFA has already intervened in Indonesia once this year, forcing the PSSI to elect a new leadership following chronic infighting.

The PSSI’s diciplinary committee chief Catur Agus Saptono said Persib Bandung, who have played in the new competition, were fined one billion rupiah ($110,000) while seven other defectors were given 500 million

rupiah penalties.“Persib Bandung played in our

competition and received revenue-sharing benefits, but they now play for the other league. They are showing bad sportsmanship,” Saptono said.

The other seven teams fined were Mitra Kukar, Persisam Samarinda, Persela Lamongan, Persiba Balikpa-pan, PSPS Pekanbaru, Deltras Sido-arjo and Pelita Jaya Karawang.

The eight clubs will be relegated to the second division if they come back

to the Liga Prima, Saptono said.Last season’s Liga Prima winners

Persipura Jayapura were expelled from the Asian Champions League, the continent’s top club tournament, last week for taking part in the break-away, but were not among those fined by the PSSI.

The PSSI also sanctioned two top officials of the rebel league, banning them from any involvement in soccer-related activities for three years and fining them 150 million rupiah each.

“We had to sanction them because the encouraged teams to join the Liga Super. They claimed to be president-

director and commissioner of an official league,” said Saptono.

National under-23 football team coach Rahmad Darmawan tendered his resignation Tuesday amid the turmoil, complaining that “the play-ers are those who bear the brunt” of the quarrel.

Liga Super players have effec-tively been barred from the national team, with the PSSI citing FIFA’s rules as saying players from unofficial leagues cannot represent their country in international events.

Indonesia co-hosted the 2007 Asian Cup, but its national team’s record is poor.

The sugarcane growers grouped in the Association of Indonesian Sugarcane Farmers (APTRI) hailed among others from West Java, Cen-tral Java, East Java, Lampung and North Sumatra provinces.

They believed national sugar stocks were still enough to meet consumption until May 2012.

“The plan to import sugar is not realistic because it is not based on the real sugar stocks,” APTRI Chair-man Soemitro Samadikoen said.

The association also asked the government to issue policies which served sugarcane growers` inter-ests, including maintaining presi-

dential regulation number 57 of 2004 which declared sugar as goods under surveillance.

It said sugarcane growers were currently encountered with unfa-vorable policies including the trade minister`s decree number 111 of 2009 which it said had led to the rampant circulation of white refined sugar (crystal sugar.

APTRI said white refined sugar which was supposed to meet de-mand from food and beverage manufacturers had penetrated the domestic market at the expense of local sugarcane growers.

“Based on our findings from

several parts of Indonesia, refined sugar produced by PT Makassar Tene and bearing Bola Manis brand is widely circulating in the market,” APTRI Deputy Secretary General Nur Khabsyin said.

The association urged the gov-ernment to stop the circulation of refined sugar in the market and take firm measures against those involved in it.

“The circulation of refined sugar also has an adverse impact on the sugar trade system as a whole,” he said. At the rally the sugarcane farmers also asked the government not to issue permits for the con-struction of new sugar mills.

“But if the government insists on licencing new sugar mills, APTRI will ask the new sugar mills to mill smallholder sugarcane rather than raw sugar,” Soemitro said.

JAKARTA - Indonesia may issue a rule next year requiring telecom-munications companies, including Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM), operating there to build local data centers, a move the nation’s biggest smartphone seller has resisted.

The government has informed the companies of the coming regulation, an element of the 2008 law con-cerning information and electronic transactions, said Tifatul Sembiring, Indonesia’s minister of communica-tion and information technology.

“Building a data center isn’t easy,” Sembiring said in Jakarta. “And it is expensive. We have told them to be ready.”

The pending requirement high-lights the mounting challenges RIM faces in expanding overseas as India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have expressed concern they can’t monitor e-mail traffic originat-ing in their countries. The United Arab Emirates abandoned threats to ban BlackBerry traffic in October 2010, without saying whether the Waterloo, Ontario-based company had met its demands.

RIM will “work through” any is-sues the Indonesian government has to avert any potential service inter-ruptions, David Paterson, RIM’s vice president of government relations, said in a Dec. 10 telephone interview. Media reports last week said Indone-sia’s government is threatening to cut BlackBerry data services if it doesn’t comply with commitments made in January. RIM sent a letter to the In-donesian government Sept. 23 saying it had “fully addressed” the govern-ment’s issues by adding content filters and speeding up its regional network, Paterson said.

RIM said in a separate e-mailed statement that it hasn’t been advised of any new specific requirements beyond the initial requests by the government.

“This raises a lot of concerns as these countries want to have it both ways - they want to claim they’re democracies and also control every-

thing,” said Will Stofega, an analyst at research firm International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass.

Indonesian police are investigat-ing RIM’s country head after a sale on the company’s new BlackBerry Bold 9790 smartphone resulted in a stampede that injured more than 40 people.

More than 3,000 people lined up outside a Jakarta shopping mall on Nov. 25 to buy the newly released phone, which was being offered at a 50 percent discount to the first 1,000 customers, South Jakarta Police Chief Imam Sugianto said Dec. 9.

Not Blocking RIMThree other people involved with

the event also are being investigated, Sugianto said. All are cooperating and there are no plans to arrest anyone, he said. Indonesia had at least 5 million BlackBerry subscribers as of the first half of this year, according to the na-tion’s telecommunications regulator.

RIM has led Indonesia’s smart-phone market since the fourth quarter of 2010, Stofega said. IDC expects the market to grow 68 percent next year, he said.

Indonesia currently does not re-quire companies to have servers in Indonesia, and the government has been discussing the regulation for about three years, a ministry spokes-man, Gatot Dewo Broto, said Dec. 14. Once it is implemented, companies will have to comply, Broto said.

The new rule doesn’t mention any companies by name, he said.

“The regulation doesn’t have any intention to block RIM,” he said.

Earlier this year, the government urged RIM to build a regional network aggregator in Indonesia, saying it would benefit BlackBerry users in the world’s fourth-most populous country, enabling the government to secure cus-tomers’ data and to reduce costs.

“I don’t think anybody has any remote interest in doing anything negative for the millions of Black-Berry users in Indonesia,” Paterson said Dec. 11. RIM installed some infrastructure in Singapore and Hong Kong that would speed up data flow for carriers, Paterson said.

Beauty can stop everyone’s eyes flickering. Beauty of thekid song can lullaby a baby. Similarly, beauty also can toss theimagination, soothe the mind and draw people to get near. Balihas many sources of that beauty offering the charm of nature, culture or adventure.

By maintaining traditions inspired by Hinduism, Balinesepeople go on running in harmony with the time. In other words, they do not feel inferior because of inheriting those traditions.Beauty in the form of various dance movements has been intro-duced since early ages. On seeing a dance staged, a toddler maywatch it attentively or its fingers move and move as if imitatingthe movement of the dance.

Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertain-ment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existencegives opportunity to villagers from child to adult to expresstheir artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts.Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chanceto participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing whiteand yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dancebeautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is oneof the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization oftemple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a basic love totheir tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayahthrough the arts.

When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their brothers and sisters start to learnabout organization. Many things can be learned through this or-ganization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they canlearn about the making of some simple oblation under guidanceof senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, thisyouth club actually play important role in preparing young gen-eration to maintain their valuable cultural heritages or to preparethemselves for inheriting customary responsibility.

With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn toplay drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres ofperformance showed are pure entertainment and the one in combi-nation with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and femaleplayers. In essence, this Calonarang drama highlights the endlessfight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effi-gies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is alsoassociated with ritual events at local temple.

In the following stage, when woman gets married she will enterthe new organization, namely customary village. Having learnedmuch about ritual works, it is now the time to practice them inwider social life. They should attend some socio-religious activi-ties when the events engage the members of customary village. Atthis stage, household mother can remain to show her devotionalservice through the arts other than social works. Through thearts, they may join the drama or individual psalmodic singing orpasantian.

How is about their private life It is normal as others. They alsohave opportunity to build career in their profession. In modernlife with heterogeneous professions as today, woman also worksas men do. Traditions do not impede them to reach outstandingachievement in self-employee or office job. If they work at day-time, some social works will be held at the evening.

Tradition is not something obsolete. Even, it retains abundantinspirations to create something new and creative that is advanta-geous for modern life. However, traditions should also be reviewedand adjust to the current condition without leaving behind its core.Tradition does not hinder women to get their career achievement.Even, it stays to give them a channel to express their spiritualsense through devotional services. TOKYO A key centralbank survey showed Thursdaythat confidence at major Japa-nese manufacturers fell over thelast quarter, as the export-reliantcountry battled a strong yenand an increasingly precariousglobal economy.

But Japan relies on exportsto drive growth, and the yen’sappreciation has hit companiessuch as Toyota Motor Corp. andSony Corp. hard. When the yenclimbs, it reduces the value ofexporters’ overseas profits whenrepatriated to Japan.

That has forced companies toshift more production overseas, prompting worries about a hol-lowing out of Japanese industry.

“The Help” was closely followed by silent-era drama “The Artist” with three nominations for its actors, including best cast in a film. Joining them in that key category were the performers in critically acclaimed drama “The Descendants” and unexpected picks in director Woody Al-len’s “Midnight in Paris” and the raunchy comedy “Bridesmaids.”

The Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, awards are among the most-watched hon-ors during Hollywood’s film awards sea-son, leading up to the Oscars in February, because actors make up one of the largest voting groups for Academy Awards. As a result, SAG nominees typically figure prominently on many ballots by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which gives out the Oscars.

The SAG Awards will be given out in Los Angeles on January 29, and televised on cable TV networks TNT and TBS. SAG surprises included the ensemble nod for “Bridesmaids” because dramas typically are favored over comedies during awards season. The joke-filled movie about women in a wedding party

also earned Melissa McCarthy a best supporting actress nod.

While movies such as “The Artist,” “The Help” and “The Descendants” have made many critics’ and industry groups’ lists of top movies, “Midnight in Paris” will get a big boost in this year’s Acad-emy Award race by virtue of its SAG nomination. Next on Oscar watchers’ list is Thursday’s Golden Globe nods.

Among acting races, Leonardo Di-Caprio earned a surprise SAG nod for best actor as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in “J. Edgar” and Brad Pitt’s role as a math-minded baseball man in “Moneyball” put him in the race, too.

They are joined by another unexpect-ed choice, Mexican-born actor Demain Bichir in “A Better Life.” Rounding out the category will be widely touted George Clooney playing a struggling father in “The Descendants” and French actor Jean Dujardin as a silent-era film star in “The Artist” Left out of the SAG actor race was Michael Fassbender, who has earned acclaim portraying a sex ad-dict in “Shame.”

LOS ANGELES — A judge offered Lindsay Lohan something Wednesday that she hadn’t heard from a court in nearly two years: Praise. Superior Court Judge Stepha-nie Sautner said the actress was doing well

under strict new terms of her probation and urged her to keep up the good work.

The starlet has completed 12 days at the county morgue and five therapy sessions since Nov. 2, when she was sentenced to a strict routine of community service and counseling after her latest probation viola-tion. “You’re doing well and I’d like to see it continue,” Sautner said during a 10-minute status hearing.

She also offered Lohan an incentive to succeed, saying the actress could take leisure trips outside California after she completes a dozen days of morgue work a month. The actress had permission from her probation officer to take a trip to Hawaii to celebrate her sister’s birthday. She returned just hours before the hearing.

Lohan, 25, has drawn the repeated ire of judges for failing to complete counseling sessions and community service assignments on time. Sautner made clear Wednesday that she believes Lohan’s new schedule — which requires the model and actress to appear in court monthly until March — is the reason for the turnaround.

The judge even hinted that Lohan might end her supervised probation early if she works harder. “Do more days a month and we can end this in February, possibly,” Sau-tner said. The judge said Lohan should keep reporting to court in person to make sure she remains on track. “I think she likes to come see me,” Sautner joked. “I think that’s her motivation.”

LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson’s daughter says she was inspired to be an actress after seeing her father in the film “Moonwalker.”

“My dad was in the movie ‘Moonwalker’ and I knew he could sing really well, but I didn’t know he could act,” Paris Jackson told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, according to a transcript of the episode to air Thursday. “I saw that and I said, ‘Wow, I want to be just like him.’”

The film featuring Jackson’s signature dance move and other videos was released in 1988. Paris said her father encouraged her and did improvisation sessions to develop her skills. The 13-year-old has been cast alongside Larry King in a film based on a new children’s book, “Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys,” which is in early stages of development.

The Internet Movie Database, known as IMDB, shows the film is tentatively sched-uled for a 2013 release, although filmmak-ers have not presented the teen’s proposed acting contract to a Los Angeles court as required because she is a minor. Paris also talked about the lengths that her father took to protect her identity for an episode that will air on Thursday.

She said her father protected her and her two brothers from the media, such as by placing them in masks or dressing them in costumes when they were in public. She said

she initially thought wearing the mask was stupid, but later came to realize that it was for her and her brothers’ protection.

She said no one recognized her when she began attending school after her father’s death in June 2009. “I was like, yes, I have a chance to be normal,” she said.

Jackson’s children have since been in the public eye, appearing onstage at their father’s televised memorial service, the Grammy Awards and other television appearances.

The combination of Google’s soft-ware and Samsung’s hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best can-didates to compete with Apple’s latest iPhone, though its price is steep. It will be available Thursday in the U.S. for $300 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract.

Like the previous phone in the Nexus

line, the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was jointly developed by Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. It features a slim frame with a large, curved glass screen that’s comfortable for chatting with friends and excellent for watching videos. There are 32 gigabytes of built-in storage space on the Verizon version of the phone, but no external slot for a microSD memory card.

The screen, a pocket-busting 4.65 inches at the diagonal, makes the iP-hone’s 3.5-inches look diminutive. And despite the size, the Galaxy Nexus man-ages to weigh just 4.8 ounces, slightly less than Apple’s offering.

On it, videos and Web pages looked

crisp and bright, with rich colors. I start-ed watching a video during testing — an HD copy of “The Help” that I rented from Google’s Android Market — and had to force myself to break away to test other features of the device.

With the latest version of Android under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features. Many of them are great; others are sim-ply great in theory.

Overall, the software looks fresher and less cluttered. The virtual “buttons” that usually sit at the bottom of the screen have been redesigned. There’s still a “home” and a “back” button, but no “menu” button to pull up various op-tions within an app. Instead, there’s now a “recent apps” button that shows what you’ve been doing lately on the phone.

Another neat change: The buttons are completely virtual, so they change direc-tions when you flip the phone sideways and disappear when you’re viewing photos or videos.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — An unexpected but fruitful relationship has blossomed between two potent forces in the swamps of South Florida: the American crocodile, and a nuclear power plant.

The reptile has made it off the endangered species list thanks in part to 168 miles of manmade cooling canals surrounding Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in the southeastern corner of the Florida peninsula. It turns out that Florida Power and Light was building prime croc habitat just as virtually every other developer was paving it over.

Federal wildlife officials give the state’s largest public utility part of the credit for a five-fold increase in the species’ population in Florida. There are only two other sanctuaries for the crocodiles, which are still considered threatened.

“The way the cooling canal system was designed actually turned out to be pretty good for crocodile nesting,” said John Wrublik, a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-vice. “It wasn’t designed for crocodiles, but they’ve done a very good job of maintaining that area.”

Hundreds of crocodiles, as long as 15 feet and as heavy as one ton, roam the swampland surrounding the power plant. They’re moni-tored by wildlife biologists hired by the utility, who sometimes need quick reflexes to keep all their fingers.

On one recent nighttime survey, Mario Al-decoa jumped from an airboat in total darkness and darted into the bushes to grab a 13-pound crocodile to mark it for identification. “It’s usually just adrenaline and instinct,” he said.

The American crocodile is often confused with its plentiful cousin, the alligator. Alliga-tors are black, have broad, rounded snouts and are found throughout the deep South. Crocodiles are grayish, have narrow tapered snouts and are so sensitive to cold that their only U.S. habitat is in South Florida.

LOS ANGELES — At birth, Melinda Star Guido was so tiny she could fit into the palm of her doctor’s hand. Weighing just 9 1/2 ounces — less than a can of soda — she is among the smallest babies ever born in the world. Most infants her size don’t survive, but doctors are preparing to send her home by New Year’s.

Melinda was born premature at 24 weeks over the summer and spent the early months co-cooned in an incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit in Southern California. Almost every day, her 22-year-old mother sits at her bedside

and stays overnight whenever she can.The day before her Thursday due date,

Haydee Ibarra visited Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where her daughter has been since her birth in late August. Melinda is believed to be the second smallest baby to survive in the U.S. and third in the world.

Ibarra caressed Melinda through the portholes of the incubator where nurses pinned up a homemade sign bearing her name. Now weighing four pounds, Melinda gripped Ibarra’s pinky finger and yawned. “Melinda, Melinda,” she cooed at her daugh-ter dressed in a polka dot onesie. “You’re awake today.”

The Briton’s camp has lodgedan official complaint over therefereeing of Saturday’s fight inWashington D.C. where Khan wasdeducted two points in a split-decision defeat.

“We are trying to get the resultoverturned, if not then a rematch isgoing to happen,” Khan told Reu-ters in an interview at a gym he setup in his home town of Bolton innorthwest England and where pic-tures of him adorn several walls.

“Even if the result does getturned over, I would still give Lam-ont Peterson a deserved re-match.We’ll do it somewhere neutral, not in D.C. or in the U.K. Some-where like Vegas ... where it willbe neutral judging and a neutralreferee.”

Referee Joseph Cooper penal-ized Khan one point in the seventhround for pushing and one in the12th when he hit Peterson on thebreak in the fight which was tak-ing place in the American boxer’shome town.

The deductions proved crucialwhen the scores were announced, one judge giving the fight 114-111to Khan but the other two scoringit 113-112 for Petersen.

Khan said he would never fightin Washington D.C. again and be-lieved other boxers would now alsosnub the venue.

“I don’t think there will beother big fights there, definitelynot, after seeing what happened tome,” he said.

“People are going to think whyshould we go there because of thedecision, and the refereeing andjudging is not according to ourprofession.”

SOUR GRAPESConfident that Peterson would

stick to his word and agree to are-match in March or May, Khanwas already thinking about how toget back his belts.

“(The key is to) not stay on theropes too long, not stand in frontof him, keep the movement, keepthe distance ... be just one step

ahead of him really,” the 25-year-old said.

“I always knew he was goingto be a tough fighter, he’s got oneof those styles that makes it dif-ficult.

“People were saying to me youcan go in there and knock him outin four or five rounds but I knewit was going to go the distanceand I trained very hard for thefight.”

The defeat was Khan’s second in28 fights since turning professionalafter winning an Olympic silvermedal at the 2004 Athens Games.

His post-fight comments havebeen blasted as sour grapes bysome Internet bloggers but Khandenied he was being a bad loser.

“I’m not complaining,” he said.“I’ve said Lamont Peterson foughta great fight, it was just judgedunfairly.”

The loss has forced him to delayhis plans to move up a weight divi-sion, where he would hope to fightthe likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The most significant change is the start of the season moving forward by a week, with the Qatar Grand Prix now taking place on 8 April rather than on 15 April as published in the calendar revealed in September.

The Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez has also now been confirmed, the race having appeared as subject to a new contract in the summer version of the calendar.

Sachsenring has been added to the schedule for the German Grand Prix, although the event is still subject to the finalisation of a contract.

SEBASTIAN Vettel has added yet another accolade at the end of his remarkable 2011 campaign - by being voted as the best Formula 1 driver of the year in AUTOSPORT’s exclusive team principals’ top 10 rankings. In the now annual poll, Vettel emerged as a clear winner ahead of Jenson But-ton - with last year’s winner Fernando Alonso dropping two places down to third.

The annual team principals’ verdict is compiled by getting the top ten driver rankings of every boss, which are kept se-cret, and then converting their rankings into the F1 points’ system (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1).

The final scores are added up to discover which driver the team bosses overall believed had done the best job through-out the campaign. Vettel is the first world champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2008 to earn the top place in the drivers’ rankings.

Red Bull Racing team prin-cipal Christian Horner be-lieved that it would have been wrong for any driver other than Vettel to have come out on top

on the back of his dominant campaign. “It would have been a surprise if any driver other than Sebastian would have been voted as the driver of the year, after the season he’s had in 2011,” Horner told AUTOSPORT.

“He won 11 races, finished second in five, third in one, had a fourth place and one DNF which is quite a remark-able run of results. “On top of which, he scored a season record of 15 pole positions to secure his second consecutive world championship title. Therefore he fully deserves to have been recognised as the outstanding driver of 2011.”

Paul di Resta was the leading rookie driver, earning 44 points to take seventh place, while Heikki Kovalainen’s efforts for Team Lotus were rewarded with ninth place.

This year’s voters were: Horner, Martin Whitmarsh, Stefano Domenicali, Ross Brawn, Eric Boullier, Frank Williams, Vijay Mallya, Pe-ter Sauber, Tony Fernandes, Colin Kolles and John Booth. Scuderia Toro Rosso declined to take part.
