The airing of the movie Friday night on China Central Television stunned viewers and raised hopes that China is loosening censorship.

“V for Vendetta” never appeared in Chinese theaters, but it is unclear whether it was ever banned. An article on the Com-munist Party’s People’s Daily website says it was previously prohibited from broad-cast, but the spokesman for the agency that approves movies said he was not aware of any ban.

Some commentators and bloggers think the broadcast could be CCTV producers pushing the envelope of censorship, or

another sign that the ruling Communist Party’s newly installed leader, Xi Jinping, is serious about reform.

“Oh God, CCTV unexpectedly put out ‘V for Vendetta.’ I had always believed that film was banned in China!” media com-mentator Shen Chen wrote on the popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo service, where he has over 350,000 followers.

Zhang Ming, a supervisor at a real estate company, asked on Weibo: “For the first time CCTV-6 aired ‘V for Vendetta,’ what to think, is the reform being deepened?”

The 2005 movie, based on a comic book, is set in an imagined future Britain

with a fascist govern-ment. The protagonist wears a mask of Guy Fawkes, the 17th-century English rebel who tried

to blow up Parliament. The mask has become a revolutionary symbol for young protesters in mostly Western countries, and it also has a cult-like status in China as pirated DVDs are widely available. Some people have used the image of the mask as their profile pictures on Chinese social media sites.

Beijing-based rights activist Hu Jia wrote on Twitter, which is not accessible to most Chinese because of government Internet controls: “This great film couldn’t be any more appropriate for our current situation. Dictators, prisons, secret police, media control, riots, getting rid of ‘heretics’ ... fear, evasion, challenging lies, overcom-ing fear, resistance, overthrowing tyranny ... China’s dictators and its citizens also have this relationship.”

China’s authoritarian government strictly controls print media, television and radio. Censors also monitor social media sites including Weibo. Programs have to be approved by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, but people with knowledge of the industry say CCTV, the only company with a nationwide broadcast license, is entitled to make its own censorship decisions when showing a foreign movie.

“It is already broadcast. It is no big deal,” said a woman who answered the phone at movie channel CCTV-6. “We also didn’t anticipate such a big reaction.” The woman, who only gave her surname, Yang, said she would pass on questions to her supervisor, which weren’t answered.

GivEn the fact she titled her latest album Diamonds, it’s not surprising that pop star Rihanna likes the finer things in life. The 24-year-old took living in the lap of luxury a step further this week when she plunked down millions for a 7-bedroom, 9-bath mansion in the L.A. celeb-magnet enclave of Pacific Palisades.

According to Zillow , (though the news was first reported by X17) the home is newly constructed and includes every-thing the “Rude Boy” singer could want, including a sun deck overlooking the tree-tops, an outdoor firepit, infinity pool with spa, media room, and the latest in cutting edge technology: a smart-home system that allows homeowners to control air conditioning and heat, fireplaces, security,

and the sound system remotely. Perfect for Rihanna’s jet-setting lifestyle!

How much the Barbados-born songstress paid for the new home hasn’t yet been recorded by the county, but the estate’s most-recent asking price was $11.9 million, according to Zillow, though it was originally priced at a whopping $15 million when it first went on the market in the spring of 2011. Rihanna will be moving from her Beverly Hills pad, which she sold at a loss after complaining it was poorly constructed and has had multiple water-leak issues.

As for A-list neighbors in her new hood, Pacific Palisades is currently home to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner; Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson; Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw; and new residents Matt Da-

mon and wife Lucia Barroso, which means plenty of candidates for neighborhood double dates with Chris Brown. Fun!

And RiRi isn’t just living in the lap of luxury, she’s riding in it too. The same day news broke of her big home purchase, the singer posted an Instagram photo of a brand-new Porshce in her driveway, writing “ Thank you to my Roc brothers! I love you guys, y’all are crazy ...” The car, a Porsche 911 Turbo S, is reportedly worth $160,000 and was apparently an early Christmas gift given to her by her management company. Porsche 911 Tur-bo S management company, Roc Nation. Note to self: Sign up with a management company by next Christmas. Hope they give you a car.

Gianyar (Bali Post)—Dog bite cases in Gianyar County

for eleven months in 2012 reached 7,353. This amount was known from the demand of anti rabies vaccine (VAR) from residents to a number of medical services in Gianyar County such as the community health center and hospital. To handle more than 7,000 dog bite cases required 15,986 vials of anti-rabies vaccine.

A legislator of Gianyar House, Nyoman Arjawa, revealed the matter on Wednesday (Dec 19). This mem-ber of Commission D had claimed to worry considering the few remain-ing VAR stock until November as informed by the Health Agency. It happened because the daily demand for VAR was very high this year.

He mentioned that dog bite case per day reached 17-25 people. Therefore, until November, the dog bite reached more than 7,000 cases. “Seeing the high dog bite cases,

relevant parties worried about the existing VAR stock approaching this year end,” he explained.

According to Arjawa, based on data of the Health Agency, the VAR allocation for Gianyar County in 2012 reached 17,248 vials, sourcing from special allocation fund (DAK) came to 4,688 vials, 8,200 vials posed the assistance from provincial government and 4,360 vials from county government. Based on dog bite cases from January to Novem-ber 2012, the use of VAR reached 15,986 vials.

Meanwhile, the high demand for VAR in 2012 was caused by high public awareness and the emergence of public anxiety to the hazards of rabies. In every dog bite case, the victim requested VAR administration service to community health center or hospital. They worried if the dog bite cases would cause rabies. (kmb16)

The ritual was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Istri Anom Keniten from Griya Jumpung Anyar, Dawan Klod, Klung-kung. It contained animal sac-rifice in the form of chicken of five colors, consisting of the white, warm red, white (with yellow leg), black and mul-ticolor chicken. “This ritual serves as purification to home and yard after the procession of ngaben or cremation ritual,” said Ida Pedanda Istri Anom Keniten. She explained that it was also aimed at eliminating the cuntaka or temporarily im-pure to family, shrines as well house compound after a family member had reunion with the Creator (Amor Ring Acintya).

A ritual expert, IB Ardika, ex-plained that Panca Sata exorcism ritual only used chickens of five colors as the main ingredients. In addition, there were dozens of other oblations to support the ritual. It was intended to purify the cuntaka to family and home after cremation.

The word caru was derived from syllable car meaning ‘to cleanse.’ On that account, the ritual served to purify the house compound. When organizing the procession of cremation, the house compound was consid-ered to be in cuntaka condition so that it had to be purified.

The ceremony was con-tinuation within the series of cremation ritual. After that, it

would be held memukur or ma-ligia ritual on January 2, 2013. After memukur, it would be resumed with a more grandiose exorcism ritual.

The r i tual held on las t Wednesday was attended by dozens of Balinese residents. It was concluded with praying together and then floated obla-tions to local river. Senior figure of Bali Post, Mrs. Desak Raka Nadha had reunion with the Creator on November 24, 2012 in Siloam Hospital, Tangerang, Banten. The deceased’s crema-tion ritual was held on Sunday (Dec 16). During her lifetime, the deceased was a freedom fighter as well as educational leader in Bali. (kmb30)

Singaraja (Bali Post) –Even though the carrier of 1.6

tons of Balinese arak alcohol drink, Kadek Lemuh (32), from Jung Sri Vil lage, Bebandem, Karangasem has been captured yet he can still breathe easy as he is only punished with a fine IDR 1 million after a light trial took place at Singaraja National Court last Wednesday (19/12). Judge Kurniawati legally processed it after Sawan Police investigates witnesses and patrols that caught a truck carrying those at the crossroad of Jagaraga-Sangsit, Sawan, last Monday (17/12).

Lemuh was proven to have violated Regional Regulation No. 12 Year 2006 on alcohol drinks and for that he was fined IDR 1 million. Accused has no burden in paying it as he stated he will pay it straight away. Sawan Po-lice Head, APC Nyoman Kartika as permitted by Buleleng Police Head, GAPC Benny Arjanto, con-firmed the case and it is admitted that couldn’t state the case is a smuggling type or illegal. “After

we investigate and completed evi-dences, the driver of the truck and evidences were then forwarded to the Court as light crime act because the case was on its distri-bution permit violation,” Kartika explained.

Meanwhile the 1.6 tons of evidences were then destroyed totally by the Court as helped by police. The smell was no good and police had to wash it away. As told before Sawan police captured accused after driver was driving weirdly and slipped at the cross-road. A resident then reported it and police found there was a strong smell of alcohol around it. There are around 50 packages of Balinese arak alcohol drink packaged under a white sack where each several of 35 liters arak in a plastic can be found totaling 1,680 liters. The white sack was used to trick people from the outside to think they are sands in sacks which usually used for the high tide yet two of the packages ripped and its smell spread. (kmb)

GREEN belt in the Karangasem region is neglected. Although the Bylaw has never been revoked, the control against the green belt seems to have never been performed. As evidence, some notice boards of green belt have vanished.

Not only that, many notices on green belt have turned vague and even vanished. Even, they have en-tirely disappeared because the paint has been peeling off and never been renewed after dozens of years. The bylaw on green belt in Karangasem has been published in Regional Stat-ute Book in 1991.

Beautiful paddy fields in Karan-gasem belonging to green belt include the area eastward of Tirtagangga namely from the north of Temega to Tirtagangga tourist attraction and then is resumed to the beautiful ex-panse of rice fields frequently used as tourist stopover at Tirtagangga. Un-fortunately, the green belt is starting to be besieged by permanent build-ings, other than the remaining flower garden. Green belt also exists in the east of Amlapura-Singaraja route at Padangkerta village. However, the green belt has vanished.

In Abang subdistrict, the green belt can still be found at Berina paddy field area, despite the notice board of green belt has gone. The board collapsed or damaged and has never been repaired. Another notice board of green belt has also been posted in the rice field area at Muncan village and Sidemen. Unluckily, their fate ends in the same condition. Aside from the notice board of green belt is getting more unclear, the offi-cials of Karangasem never mention anything about the maintenance of the existing green belt based on the bylaw of Karangasem. The executive officers are similar to the legislators of Karangasem. They prefer to keep silent when asked to comment about

the bylaw on green belt whether it is still valid or not.

A member of the House said that as long as the bylaw had not been revoked, it meant to remain valid. However, it was difficult to imple-ment, monitor and control the green belt today. People were not willing if their land was included into green belt. Moreover, the government was unable to provide any compensation such as in the form of property tax exemption.

The Regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, had urged people especially those liked washing cars, motorcycles and trucks on the irriga-tion canal such as near Iseh and Side-men in order they no longer washed theirs before the public. The problem was that they often washed theirs while being naked. Other than being busy, the road section was often used as stopover by tourists while shooting the overlay of the beautiful rice field view. Later, a notice board banning to wash vehicles had been posted near Iseh Sidemen. Unfortunately, there were still one or two stubborn people where they insisted on wash-ing vehicles at the location.

Meanwhile, a legislator of Karangasem House, Nyoman Sadra, highlighted the vision and mission of Karangasem Regent, I Wayan Geredeg, in order it could be implemented during his twice tenures. So far, the organic farming, including the breeder empowerment through collection and sale of cow urine, had not been implemented. “Organic farming as part of the vi-sion and mission of the Karangasem Regent is very good. Now, he just needs to implement it. However, the organic farming program is seemingly never implemented so far,” said Sadra when presenting his overview in a commission joint meeting some time ago. According to Slamet, the trend of the future tourist guide is believed to no longer be a book, but rather a mobile application that can be run through a variety of operating systems. Through this application, tourists can do information searches, planning a trip, accommodation reservation and tourist services.

He explained the STE is an ap-plication created to support and involve all stakeholders associ-ated with tourism, such as hotels, airlines, trains, restaurants, car rental/motor, show business un-til the souvenirs sellers. “Smart Tourism Ecosystem (STE) can enhance the capabilities of the tourism industry in a more ef-ficient and effective by utilizing

the platform and solutions de-signed by Telkom,” said Slamet.

Not only among tourists who benefit from Smart Tourism Eco-system, the whole ecosystem re-lated to tourism are getting value added. This ecosystem is indeed intended for Business-to-Business (B2B), Business to Government (B2G), Business to Consumer (B2C) and Business-to-Business-to-Consumer (B2B2C).

He expressed this applica-tion is one form of new business developed by Digital Society of Bali (Bali DiSo). National project which takes the theme of “Smart Cultural Island” integrates tele-communications network Telkom Group (one network) and the development of system One

Id (Identity Number) and One Billing. “One of the important momentum from Bali DiSo is deploying the means of broad-band access in the form of Wifi-Id in the whole area of Bali,” he explained.

The end of 2012, Telkom Group will soon complete the 3,000 Wifi access points-IDs that are scattered in various places, including places that have rel-evance to the tourism, schools, colleges, and businesses. This number will increase signifi-cantly at the end of 2013, that as many as 40,000 Wifi access point-Id, and 32,000 access point which are placed in locations that related to the tourist industry of Bali. Shares in ASOS, whose celebrity fans include United States First Lady Michelle Obama, rose 4 percent on Tuesday after the firm posted first-quarter sales growth slightly ahead of consensus expectations and said it was confident about the outlook for Christmas and 2013.

With Britain facing the prospect of a triple-dip recession, many re-tailers have been finding the going tough as consumers fret over job security and a squeeze on incomes. ASOS, with its broad international reach, has bucked the gloom.

The retailer, which targets young women looking to emulate the de-signer looks of celebrities like Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa Contostavlos and Cheryl Cole, said its retail sales rose 30 percent to 165.8 million pounds ($266.5 million) in the three months to Nov. 30, its fiscal first quarter.

That compares with analysts’ consensus forecasts of about 29 percent and growth of 31 percent in the fourth quarter of the previous financial year, and reflects a 35 per-cent rise in active customers to 5.4

million from 160 countries buying on-trend products such as onesies, Christmas jumpers and leathers.

“I can’t grow much more than these sorts of levels on the basis that I haven’t got more than 30 percent more stock in the business,” Chief Executive Nick Robertson told Reuters, adding he was keen analysts “don’t run away with” growth forecasts.

ASOS’ first-quarter retail sales in Britain rose 24 percent to 62.1 mil-lion pounds, while international sales increased 34 percent to 103.7 million pounds and now represent 63 percent of total sales. “I can’t sell the same dress twice because it’s all coming out of the same warehouse, so if I’m doing better in the UK I can’t outperform everywhere else,” said the CEO.

Robertson was particularly encour-aged by the performance in Britain. “This is our mature market and some people had questioned whether or not we were grinding to a halt in the UK. Clearly that’s not the case,” he said.

ASOS’ retail gross margin did, however, fall 100 basis points year-on-year. That reflected a strong

comparative period last year, when gross margin rose 440 basis points, the UK accounting for a larger per-centage of total sales than initially planned, and price cuts.

“The irony of doing more sales in the UK is that that puts a bit of negative pressure on my margin,” said Robertson, noting international sales have a higher component of more profitable own-buy products. He said he was “pretty confident” about Christmas trading.

“There was a bit of talk last year that maybe online growth was start-ing to come off a bit. I’m not feeling that, I think mobile and iPad have helped,” he said.

ASOS shares have risen 82 per-cent over the last year, hitting a record 2,571 pence in October. The stock was up 4.5 percent at 2,574 pence at 1136 GMT, valuing the business at 2.1 billion pounds.

“If ASOS can grow sales at 24.3 percent in this (UK) market, it bodes extremely well for ASOS in virtually all of its markets ex UK,” said Pan-mure Gordon analyst Jean Roche.

LONDON — Burberry has decided to brand it like Beckham. The London-based fashion house says Romeo Beckham — aged 10 — is a new face of the cloth-ing brand. The son of soccer star David Beckham and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham features in ads for Burberry’s spring/summer 2013 collection.

Beckham wears one of Burb-erry’s signature trench coats in the campaign, which also features models including Cara Delevigne, Edie Campbell and Alex Dunstan.

Burberry chief creative officer Christopher Bailey said Romeo had been “a joy to work with and really stole the show” at the photo shoot. Last week, Romeo Beck-ham, his brothers Brooklyn and Cruz and father David all wore Burberry as they attended the pre-miere of the Spice Girls musical “Viva Forever!” in London.

NEW YORK — Zac Posen will be the new featured judge on “Project Runway,” filling the chair Michael Kors sat in for the show’s first 10 seasons.

Posen called the role “an amazing opportunity” and said he hoped to give a new perspective to the competing designers.

Kors isn’t “out” — as host Heidi Klum likes to say to con-testants who get kicked off the fashion reality TV show. His schedule didn’t allow a com-mitment, but he will come back as a guest judge for the season finale, according to a statement for Lifetime TV.

Another twist to the revamped “Project Runway” is that contes-tants compete as teams instead of individuals. The “Project Run-way” season starts Jan. 24.

After five years of high tension under unpopular President Lee Myung-bak, Park has vowed to pursue engagement with Pyongyang despite its continuing nuclear program and its widely condemned long-range rocket launch last week. The daughter of late South Korean dictator Park Chung-hee, she placed more condi-tions on resuming negotiations than the liberal opposition candidate she defeated Wednesday, Moon Jae-in.

On Thursday, Park mentioned the North Korean rocket launch during a nationally televised speech.

“The North’s long-range missile launch symbolically showed how grave our secu-rity reality is,” Park said following a visit to Seoul’s National Cemetery, where she paid silent tributes to late presidents, including her father.

North Korean state media have repeat-edly questioned the sincerity of Park’s North Korea engagement policy, since she

and Lee are from the same party.Ties between the Koreas plummeted

during Lee’s term. Many voters believe Lee’s policies drove North Korea to renew nuclear and missile tests and to launch two attacks in 2010 that killed 50 Koreans.

North Korea put its first satellite into space with last week’s rocket launch, but Park’s party, the U.S. and others said the mission was a cover for a test of banned ballistic missile technology. The launch raised North Korea as an issue in the clos-ing days of campaigning, though many voters said they cared more about the economy.

Park (Bahk guhn-hae) has said she is open to dialogue with North Korea, but she has also called on Pyongyang to show progress in nuclear dismantlement. She has also raised the possibility of a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but only if it’s “an honest dialogue on issues of mutual concern.”

CAIRO — Egypt’s ousted president Hosni Mubarak was returned to his prison Wednesday after he was transferred to a Cairo military hos-pital briefly for an X-ray of his head, a security official said.

For months, there have been conflicting reports about the health of the 84-year old Mubarak, who was sentenced in June to life in prison for failing to stop the killing of hundreds of protesters during last year’s uprising. He is the first Arab president to serve a prison sentence. Gen. Mohammed Ibrahim, the deputy interior minister, said that Mubarak was returned to prison after the X-ray.

Mubarak fell in the prison bathroom on Sat-urday injuring his head and chest. The hospital is located in a Cairo suburb of Maadi. Mubarak’s family and lawyer appealed to authorities to keep him in the hospital, citing prison poor facilities.

While he was in power, Mubarak’s health was treated almost as a state secret. Since his ouster, Mubarak’s supporters have released details of his failing health in what critics say is an attempt to gain sympathy from the public and appeal for leniency from the courts.

Less than three weeks after he was convicted and sent to Cairo’s Tora prison, Mubarak was abruptly transferred to a military hospital after reports that his heart had stopped beating. The state news agency said at the time that Mubarak had suffered a stroke. He was returned to prison a month later.

On Wednesday, rumors about Mubarak’s death were circulating on social networking sites after one newspaper website reported it. Ibrahim denied the rumors.

PARIS — Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s legal problems are not over. French judges decided Wednesday not to drop pimping charges against the former International Monetary Fund chief, according to his lawyers, who had sought to have the case thrown out. They quickly vowed to appeal.

Strauss-Kahn, 63, is fresh off a legal settlement reached in the U.S. last week with Nafissatou Diallo, the New York hotel maid who had accused him of rape in May 2011. That accusation torpedoed his once-illustrious political career, and was followed by other al-legations of sex-related wrongdoing.

None has led to a conviction. The only case remaining is the in-vestigation into Strauss-Kahn’s suspected role in a hotel prostitution ring in the northern French city of Lille.

An appeals court in nearby Douai on Wednesday maintained preliminary charges filed against Strauss-Kahn in March for “ag-gravated procurement in an organized gang” — meaning the probe can continue. He is one of several defendants in the case, which allegedly involves prominent city figures and police.

Strauss-Kahn, a one-time French presidential hopeful, resigned from his IMF job and saw his international reputation collapse and his sexual proclivities aired in public after the claims by Diallo.

Strauss-Kahn lawyer Henri Leclerc lashed out Wednesday at the investigating judges leading the Lille case. In a statement, he claimed the charges against Strauss-Kahn were not specified, that some evi-dence was hidden from the defense, that facts were twisted and that the definition of “pimping” was created with no basis in law.

Outside the Douai courthouse, Frederique Baulieu, another defense lawyer, told reporters: “We are certain that Dominique Strauss-Kahn will be cleared of all charges against him.” The case against Strauss-Kahn hinges on whether he knew he was partying with prostitutes and whose money was used to pay them.

Tabanan (Bali Post)—

The outbreak of bird flu in East Java makes Tabanan County government prepared. As an-ticipative measure, the county government prevents the entry of the deadly virus. One of the measures is assigning bird flu tracker team to all corners of villages. The team will detect the possible outbreak of bird flu.

The Head of Tabanan Live-stock Agency, Ni Ketut Warsiki, explained the bird flu case should be alerted immediately. Upon hearing the bird flu outbreak in East Java, her party promptly de-ployed a team to track the possi-bility of bird flu in Tabanan. “No matter how small the incident is, we should examine it carefully. Do not let it claim a victim,” she said, Wednesday (Dec 19).

She added that her party had coordinated with all subdistrict livestock officers and alerted the

bird flu tracker team. Their task was to do monitoring at poultry farm centers. Focus of the secu-rity lay in the breeder of sector four or traditional breeder be-cause such kind of breeding was prone to bird flu. Meanwhile, sector three or chicken employ-ers were requested to be vigilant by vaccinating their poultry regularly. “So far, there has not been found, but we must remain vigilant,” she explained.

Another measure, said War-siki, was that all the breeders were required to implement bio-security to their respective cage. It was one of the efforts to main-tain the sanitation and health of poultry. Thus, the potential to be affected by bird flu would be relatively small. Similarly, residents were also provided with disinfectant to make their cage immune. The last bird flu case hitting Tabanan occurred in 2003. (kmb30)

Luh Ketut Suci said on Wednesday (Dec 19) that the stall was the only source of her income to support the family with her husband. She just traded from 04:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. “I have been trading here for 12 years. If I have to be evicted now, how I should support my four children?” she asked.

Aside from her, two other traders next to her also got evicted. She told that her stall began to be disputed since the wall behind her stall or compound wall of the SDN 1 Paksebali elemen-tary school was repaired by school. At that time, the three traders were asked to move and found out another place so that it would be easier for handymen to repair the wall through a notifica-tion issued by Headman of Paksebali, Wayan Soma. After the compound wall was repaired, Headmaster of the SDN 1 Paksebali, T. Umar Haini, sent a let-ter again to Headman of Paksebali in order the school compound wall was not hindered by anything that could cause the wall dirty. Previously, one of the residents of Puri Satria Kawan

hamlet also had complained to head-man related to the existence of the three stalls as they were judged to have disrupted the road users, especially in the morning.

In response to such complaint, Head-man of Paksebali issued an appeal to the traders. In the letter was mentioned that based on the results of coordination meeting with the Klungkung Education Agency, Committee of the SDN 1 Pak-sebali as well as the assembly of the Puri Satria Kanginan and Puri Satria Kawan, the traders were no longer allowed to trade at the location. Other than disturb-ing the security and order, it was also intended to avoid traffic congestion.

Wayan Soma said if the traders had to be evicted they did not own an alter-native elsewhere to trade because the Satria Market had been fully occupied. After being appealed, the traders per-sisted on selling at the location. Wayan Soma said if the traders persisted, he would hand over the problem to the au-thorities such as the public order officer (Satpol PP) to take action. (kmb31)

DENPASAR - The Association of Bali Tourist Transport (Pawiba) would provide at least 1,000 buses to serve passengers during Christ-mas and New Year. The demand for tourist transport was predicted to increase in a week before Christmas until day five after New Year.

“On average, the number of tourist transport fleet operating during the celebration of Christmas and New Year reaches 80 percent. It is a bless-ing for tourist transport,” said Chair-man of Pawiba, Bagus Soediana, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Dec 19).

According to him, the employers of tourist transport were ready to serve the transport needs of com-munity and tourists that celebrated Christmas and New Year in Bali. Until now, there had been no rejec-tion of bookings from the entrepre-neurs of tourist transport, though they showed an increase.

“Tourist transport entrepreneurs having many regular customers will experience overbooking ahead of

the celebrations. However, those having overbooking will request ad-ditional fleet to other entrepreneurs of tourist transport,” he said.

Bagus Soediana predicted that travelers celebrating Christmas and New Year holiday would be booming. It happened because the range from Christmas Day to New Year was relatively short so that many travelers would choose Bali to spend their long holiday.

“Users of this tourist transport are mostly families of domestic and foreign markets. They have a choice of using rental vehicle or tourist transport,” he said.

He said that foreign travelers taking advantage of tourist trans-port ahead of Christmas holiday were still dominated by Australian tourists. Meanwhile, the demand for tourist transport from European tourists ahead of the celebration was not too significant.

“Probably, it is caused by less optimal direct flights from Europe to Indonesia, including Bali, as well as the impact of the economic crisis

in Europe,” he said. The whole mode of transport had

been ready to assist the journey of community in conjunction with the celebration of Christmas and New Year, either by land, sea and air. Garuda Indonesia and Wings Air, for example, had added 16 extra flights related to the celebrations. Such additional flights would pro-vide 3,000 seats. It was estimated the passengers on the peak season would reach 50,000 people a day.

“Two airlines are scheduling extra flights, such as Garuda with 6 aircrafts (12 movements) and Wings Air with 2 aircrafts (4 movements). Passenger of the extra flights will approximately reach 3,000 seats. Meanwhile, other airlines will soon follow,” said General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura (AP) I of Ngurah Rai Airport, Purwanto.

He said the aircraft movement at Ngurah Rai Airport on weekdays reached 308 or about 154 aircraft. In the meantime, the average passen-ger served by the Ngurah Rai airport reached 39,000 people. (kmb27)

Judged to interrupt order, three small traders get evicted

Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Stalls of three small traders in the west of SDN 1 Paksebali elementary school were evicted by force. The three traders were judged to have been disturbing the order and safety for pedestrians as they traded on roadside. One of the traders at the location, Luh Ketut Suci, protested because, according to her, she had been trading over 12 years at the location and during which nobody disputed her.

TORONTO — General Motors says it will move production of the next version of its Camaro sports car from its Canadian operation in Oshawa, Ontario, to a plant in Lansing, Michigan.

GM Canada said in a statement Wednes-day that the new Camaro will be assembled at its Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, which now employs about 1,600 people. The statement said that lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies were key factors.

Some analysts said the labor agreements the Canadian Auto Workers’ union reached with the North American autoworkers a few months ago would lead to an exodus of jobs to the U.S. because labor rates are higher in Canada.

The Canadian union said the decision will cut production in Oshawa by as much as one third starting in late 2015 or early 2016. CAW President Ken Lewenza said he felt shocked and betrayed by the move. Lewenza called on the company to replace the production and

estimated at least 1,000 direct jobs and 9,000 indirect jobs will be lost if it isn’t replaced.

The Canadian government, which helped bail out GM three years ago, said it expects an explanation.

“We are concerned about the implications of this announcement on the men and women whose livelihoods depend on General Mo-tors. Taxpayers of Canada made a substantial investment to keep General Motors competi-tive and we will hold General Motors to the commitments they made in return for that in-vestment,” Industry Minister Christian Paradis said in a statement.

“It is up to General Motors to provide Ca-nadians with an explanation for their decision today, and I expect them to do so,” he said.

GM noted the Camaro is the only rear-wheel drive vehicle assembled at Oshawa.

GM said it will continue to meet production targets agreed to with the federal Canadian government and provincial Ontario govern-ment in 2009. Ottawa and Ontario contributed $13.7 billion to help bail out GM and Chrysler and combined own about 9 percent of GM’s common shares.

The bullish mood in the air is all about “Abe-nomics” — a reference, as dubbed by experts and market players, to Shinzo Abe, the shoo-in comeback prime minister when Parliament votes next week.

But experts are already wondering how long that celebration is going to last.

“This is just the honeymoon,” said Masaaki Kanno, chief economist at J.P. Morgan in Tokyo.

Abe has made reviving the economy a priority, and is pushing for a 2 percent inflation “target,” double the central bank’s “goal” now.

That’s designed to fight a problem that was until recently relatively unique in the world — deflation, or continually dropping prices, which deadens economic activity. The Japanese economy has been stuck in deflation for two decades.

The Bank of Japan, ending a two-day policy board meeting Thursday, further loosened its super-easy monetary policy, pumping more money into the financial system by expanding its asset purchase program by about 10 trillion yen ($119 billion) for

a total of 101 trillion yen ($1.2 billion).Abe’s pro-business, conservative Liberal Demo-

cratic Party was voted back into power in a landslide in Sunday’s elections.

Before a change of power in 2009, the party ruled virtually without interruption for a half-century, engineering Japan’s stellar growth into the world’s third-largest economy.

Besides generous promises to boost public-works spending — by as much as 10 trillion yen ($119 billion), according to party officials — Abe is pressuring the central bank to work more closely with the government.

In the long run, Japan needs widespread eco-nomic reforms, opening up of markets and freeing up of tight protective regulations, to get new life back into the economy, analysts say.

Job growth in recent years has been limited, often in low-pay part-time sectors. Hopelessness among the young generation is intensified by the prospect of having to foot the bill for one of the world’s most rapidly aging societies.

Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition’s opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline.

Culpo’s coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the right to be called Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.

Culpo was good enough during preliminary competitions to be chosen as one of 16 semi-finalists who moved on to compete in the pageant’s finale. Her bid lasted through swimsuit, evening wear, and interview competitions that saw cuts after each round.

She won over the judges, even after tripping slightly during the evening gown competition. Telecasters pointed it out but also noted her poised recovery.

Minutes before the middle child of five was crowned, she was asked whether she had she had ever done something she regretted.

“I’d like to start off by saying that every experience no matter what it is, good or bad, you’ll learn from it. That’s just life,” she said. “But something I’ve done I’ve regretted is probably picking on my siblings growing up, because you appreciate them so much more as you grow older.”

Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, while Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, placed third. As Miss Universe, Culpo will receive an undisclosed salary, a wardrobe fit for a queen, a limitless supply of beauty products, and a luxury apartment in New York City.

LOS ANGELES - A high-spirited Los Ange-les Clippers soared to a franchise record-tying 11th straight victory with a comfortable 93-77 triumph over the slumping New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday. Roared on by a raucous home crowd, the surging Clippers tied a winning streak dating back to 1974 when the franchise was known as the Buffalo Braves.

The present incarnation of the Clippers (19-6) last lost on Nov. 26 against the same Hornets so the victory also served as an ideal way to dish out some revenge in the rematch at the Staples Center. “We were really motivated to play better,” Los Angeles center DeAndre Jordan told reporters. “We’re just playing great basketball and that’s what’s winning us games.”

The Clippers eased to victory on the back of another balanced effort as Blake Griffin scored 18 points and Jamal Craw-ford led the reserves with 17, the home players shar-ing high-fives and smiling throughout the contest.

While points arrived of-ten and from a number of sources, the Los Angeles defense stifled the strug-

gling Hornets (5-20), who appeared jaded in their second game in as many nights as they slipped to a ninth consecutive defeat. Robin Lopez amassed 22 points and nine rebounds for New Orleans while top overall draft pick

Anthony Davis added 16, but the visitors shot just 38 percent as they put up meek resistance against an in-form opponent.

Chris Paul brought the Los Angeles crowd to its feet in the second quarter when the 27-

year-old point guard became the fifth fastest player to reach 5,000 career assists.

Paul’s milestone was flashed across the scoreboard and the crowd gave him a standing ovation even as he did not initially

know what was happening around him. “I didn’t have a clue,” Paul said, having tallied 10 points and 12 assists against the team where he spent his first six seasons in the league.

“I was so locked into the game and I just heard everyone cheering. It’s pretty cool, but it means I ’ve had great team mates. Other guys have the tough part in making the shots.”

Los Angeles made things especially tough on the young Hornets in the third quarter where they harassed them into many of their 20 turnovers.

A 12-2 run put the Clippers 69-52 ahead and out of reach. The fourth quarter saw many of the Los Angeles starters rest-ing comfortably on the bench with victory al-ready assured. “It’s cool to be able to accomplish (the streak) with this group of guys, we have so much fun together,” Griffin said. “But we have much bigger aspirations. We’ll take it, but we have to move on.”

However, Chelsea was clinical after the break, equalizing through Spain playmaker Juan Mata in the 47th before adding four more goals in a ruthless 19-minute spell. Bran-islav Ivanovic, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres were the scorers for the European cham-pions, who have won the League Cup four times — most recently in 2007.

“We had a word with ourselves at half time and the early goal gave us an impetus to go on and win it,” Chelsea captain Frank Lampard said.

By moving into the last four, where it is also joined by Aston Villa and fourth-tier Bradford, Chelsea went some way to making up for the frustration of losing the Club World Cup final to Corinthians 1-0 on Sunday. A disappointing December began with elimination from the Champions League, end-ing a title defense that lasted barely

six months. With the rain pouring down and

a slightly under-strength Chelsea only back from a draining trip to Japan on Monday, conditions had been ripe for an upset in what has been a season of surprises in the competition. “The reaction in the second half was fantastic, espe-cially with travelling back from Japan and having jet lag,” Chelsea interim coach Rafa Benitez said. “We were looking for character and the reaction was so good.”

Leeds would have loved nothing more than to get one over a team that has been one of its big rivals since the mid-1960s and ‘70s, when they were arguably the two leading clubs in England.

Police were on high alert for trouble but the match appeared to pass off without major incident off the pitch, although there were some strong tackles on it in the early stages. Lampard was booked

for one particularly tough challenge on former Senegal forward El-Hadji Diouf, one of the most volatile play-ers in English football.

An upset was on the cards when Becchio slotted home a low cross by Jerome Thomas eight minutes before the break, the most incisive moment of a hard-fought first half.

Yet, Chelsea soon displayed a ruthless side that was sorely lack-ing against Corinthians, having 10 shots on target in the second half and scoring from five of them. Mata jolted Leeds by squeezing in a shot from the edge of the area, with goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown perhaps at fault.

Then the floodgates opened, with substitute Eden Hazard helping Chelsea run amok. Ivanovic headed in Lampard’s left-wing corner to the near post in the 64th and Victor Moses drilled in a shot from 20 yards two minutes later.

Eden Hazard run onto a fine through-ball from marauding cen-ter back David Luiz for the fourth in the 81st and Torres finished off Leeds, tapping in from Hazard’s cross. “They took over and we could not cope,” Leeds manager Neil Warnock said.

BERLIN — Mario Goetze scored a hat trick on Wednesday as defending champion Borussia Dortmund routed Hannover 5-1 in the German Cup to set up a quarterfinal at Bayern Munich. “It was outstanding,” said Dortmund coach Jupp Klopp on the club’s 103rd birthday. “The whole team played a fantastic game, with bril-liant football. We’re really keen on this competition.”

The quarterfinal draw was made afterward, when Dortmund manag-ing director Hans-Joachim Watzke said he’d rather have played Bayern at home. “But it’s no problem. If you want to win the cup you have to play Bayern in any case, as we did last year,” Watzke said.

Goetze opened the scoring against Hannover with a simple finish in the third minute and Jakub Blaszczykowski made it 2-0 in the 18th, when the ball rebounded off the Polish midfielder’s chest and in after Ron-Robert Zieler saved his initial effort. Goetze grabbed his second five minutes before the break, with a cheeky free kick under the Hannover wall giving Zieler no chance.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside in the second half,

when Klopp became increas-ingly agitated as the home side’s intensity dropped. His fears were realized when Szabolcs Huszti crossed for Mame Biram Diouf to score in the 79th, following a poor pass from Mats Hummels.

But Goetze completed his first hat trick in professional football five minutes later when he met Robert Lewandowski’s precise cross on the volley. “We knew we were playing at home and we knew our strengths. We wanted to progress,” Goetze said. “Now we’ve earned our break.”

Lewandowski completed the scoring in the last minute, blasting home the rebound from close range after his first effort hit the crossbar. Zieler had pulled off a great block to deny the Poland striker moments before. “Altogether it’s a huge disappointment,” Hannover coach Mirko Slomka said.

Elsewhere in the third round, Stuttgart defeated second-division Cologne 2-1 thanks to a 31st min-ute opener from Christian Gentner and a Vedad Ibisevic penalty five minutes later. Christian Clemens scored the consolation for Co-logne with 10 minutes remaining. Stuttgart will next host Bochum, which beat second-division rival 1860 Munich 3-0.

(kmb)

LAS VEGAS — A 20-year-old Boston University sophomore and a self-described “cellist-nerd” brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade when she won the televised contest Wednesday.

Olivia Culpo beat out 88 other beauty queens to take the title from Leila Lopes of Angola during the two-hour competition at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

This year, said Mari, the expenditure of foreign tourists reached USD 1,133.81 per person, rising 1.39 percent compared to the ex-penditure in 2011 amounting to USD 1,118.26. Nevertheless, her party noted the length of stay of foreign tourist this year decreased 1.79 per-cent from 7.84 days to 7.7 days. “We estimate this happened because there was an increase in the visit of regional tourists compared to Euro-pean tourist whose country is facing economic slowdown,” she said.

However, Mari stressed, the growth of foreign tourists up to October 2012 rose 5 percent compared to last year’s. In other words, it was higher than the expected growth in global tourism predicted to increase 3-4 percent in 2012.

As for domestic tourist, it was predicted to reach 245 million trips in 2012, rising 3.81 percent compared to 2011 reaching 236 million trips. “The increase in the travel by domestic tourists has positive impact on the

expenditure of domestic tourist whose value is estimated at IDR 171,5 trillion, rising 9.3 percent compared to 2011 coming to IDR 156,89 trillion,” she said.

According to Mari, the expenditure of domestic tourists increased due to an in-crease in the number of trips and increase in the average expenditure reaching IDR 700,000, rising 5.63 percent compared to 2011 amounting to IDR 662, 680 per trip per person. “It also reflects the rising middle class in Indonesia,” she said.

Mari was glad to welcome the increased expenditure of domestic tourists this year because it was expected to bring in a positive impact on the regional economy because most domestic tourists spent their ex-penses when traveling to the regions.

JAKARTA - Tourism sector is estimated to have contributed USD 9.07 billion of foreign exchange in 2012, rising 6.03 percent compared to last year’s. “This increase can be reached due to the increase in the average expenditure of tourists per visit,” said Mari Elka Pangestu, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, in the Year End Press Conference 2012 in Jakarta, Wednesday (Dec 19).

BEiJinG — Television audiences across China watched an anarchist antihero rebel against a totalitarian government and persuade the people to rule themselves. Soon the internet was crackling with quotes of “v for vendetta’s” famous line: “People should not be afraid of their govern-ments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
