The Argentine pontiff’s brief homily was replete with Gospel references in his Christ-mas Eve mass, broadcast live in 3D for the first time.

“Do we have the courage to welcome with tenderness the difficulties and problems of those who are near to us?” the pope asked in Saint Peter’s Basilica, filled with some 5,000 worshippers.

“Or do we prefer impersonal solutions, perhaps effective but devoid of the warmth of the Gospel? How much the world needs tenderness today!” he said.

The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Ro-man Catholics also called on “the arrogant, the proud... (and) those closed off to others” to meet life “with goodness, with meekness.”

On Thursday, in his second “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world) message, the pope was expected to address the plight of Chris-tians and other religious minorities suffering persecution in the Middle East, notably at the hands of the jihadist Islamic State (IS) group.

He was also due to touch on the war in Syria, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the Ebola epidemic, Islamic fun-damentalist violence in northeastern Nigeria and the Ukraine conflict.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was ex-pected to pay tribute to the “selflessness” of medical staff and aid workers fighting the Ebola epidemic in her annual Christmas Day broadcast.

In Bethlehem on Christmas Eve hectic preparations preceded celebrations on the West Bank town’s biggest night of the year, culminating in midnight mass at the Church of the Nativity built over the spot where Christians believe the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Scouts playing bagpipes and drums marched to the church in a procession led by Jerusalem’s Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the top Catholic cleric in the Holy Land.

In his homily Twal called for “peace in Jerusalem”, where violent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians rocked the city for months, and “equality and mutual respect” among all faiths.

He also asked for the rebuilding of Gaza,

which was ravaged this summer during a 50-day war between Hamas and Israel in which more than 2,200 people died.

Outside the church at Manger Square, a man dressed as Santa Claus handed out sweets next to a giant green Christmas tree decorated with red, black and silver baubles -- the colours of the Palestinian flag.

But for many faithful across the region, the festivities will be tinged with sadness following a year of bloodshed marked by a surge in the persecution of Christians that has drawn international condemnation.

“For many of you, the music of your

Christmas hymns will also be accompanied by tears and sighs,” Pope Francis wrote in a long letter addressed to Christians in the Middle East.

Francis delivered a Christmas message via telephone to refugees displaced to Iraq’s Kurdish autonomous region.

“Dear brothers, I am close to you, very close to you in my heart,” the pope was quoted as telling the refugees by Italian press agency AGI.

“The children and the elderly are in my heart,” Francis also told the Iraqi refugees in the Ankawa camp.

In Baghdad, Chaldean Patriarch Louis Sako said about 150,000 Christians had been displaced by an offensive spearheaded by

the Islamic State group, which has targeted Christians and other minorities, with dozens leaving Iraq each day.

Iraq’s displaced Christians “still live in a tragic situation and there are no quick solu-tions for them,” Sako told AFP.

In Syria, Christians in the war-torn city of Homs were enjoying their first Christmas in three years in the Hamidiyeh neighbourhood, with a brightly coloured tree and a manger made from rubble set up in the middle of the ruins.

“Our joy is indescribable,” said Taghrid Naanaa while picking out tree decorations at a shop in the district, which the Syrian army recaptured from rebel fighters this year.

BEIJING — Hong Kong action film star Jackie Chan said he feels shame for his son, who has been indicted by Bei-jing prosecutors on a drug charge and could be jailed for up to three years.

The remarks, reported Wednesday by China’s official Xinhua News Agency, came two days after authori-ties announced the indictment against Jaycee Chan, 32, who is charged with sheltering others to use drugs.

The scandal has been particularly embarrassing for Jackie Chan, who was named by Beijing as an anti-drug ambassador in 2009.

Jackie Chan, who sits on China’s top national political advisory panel — the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference — told Xinhua that he did not use his connections to interfere with the case and that he hopes his singer-actor son will become an anti-drug ambassador when he is released.

Beijing police detained the younger Chan at his Beijing apartment in August along with Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai. Police said Chan and Ko both tested posi-tive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of

it were taken from Chan’s home.Ko, whose real name is Ko Chen-

tung, was released after a 14-day administrative detention for the drug use, but Chan — who has remained in detention since August — is faced with the more serious criminal charge.

State broadcaster CCTV in August aired video of the police raid on Chan’s apartment, in which Chan was shown identifying marijuana in his possession. Ko testified on camera that he had used drugs at Chan’s home.

CCTV also said Chan told police that he has been using drugs for eight years.

In June, Chinese President Xi Jin-ping declared that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders should be severely punished. The crackdown snared more than 7,800 people in Bei-jing alone, according to police, and celebrities were targeted because of their influence over the public.

As the only son of Jackie Chan, Jaycee Chan commands much media attention. The younger Chan has ap-peared in several films and has released three albums. (ap)

The madcap, irreverent R-rated comedy was available for rent in the United States from 1800 GMT on several platforms, a day before a limited release in about 200 cinemas on Christmas Day.

It was being distributed on Google’s YouTube for a $5.99 rental fee, on the Google Play app for Android devices and on a dedicated website, seetheinter-view.com.

A bawdy, expletive-laden tale full of sexual innuendo and scat-ological humor, the film’s future had been in doubt after Sony said it was canceling the release after an embarrassing cyber-attack on its corporate network and threats

against moviegoers. The US has blamed the hack

attack on North Korea, and President Barack Obama has threatened reprisals.

But Sony had come under fire from Obama and free speech ad-vocates for pulling the film, and the studio quickly performed an about-face.

While some US movie theater chains got cold feet after anony-mous online threats, a limited number have agreed to show the film from Thursday.

Meanwhile Google and Mi-crosoft joined forces with Sony to release the film to online audiences. “After discussing

all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another coun-try -- however silly the content might be,” Google chief legal officer David Drummond said in a blog post.

Starring comic actors Seth Rogen and James Franco, the film is a silly, low-brow romp about a CIA plot to assassinate Kim. A kind of a cross between a slapstick James Bond movie and “Hangover,” it is aimed squarely at an audience (most likely teen boys) out for a fun but vacuous night at the cinema.

MONTEREY, California — Clint Eastwood and his wife of 18 years have finalized their divorce. A Monterey County Superior Court judge finalized the Eastwoods’ divorce Tuesday and approved a judgment that does not state how the pair will divide their assets.

Clint and Dina Marie East-wood have one daughter together. She turned 18 years old earlier this month. The Oscar-winning director’s wife filed for divorce in October 2013, citing irreconcil-able differences.

The Eastwoods have been married since March 1996. They met when she was assigned to in-terview the 83-year-old actor for a TV news station. Clint Eastwood was previously married to Maggie Johnson from 1953 to 1984.

Meanwhile, the number of domestic trips in 2014 reached 251 million.

Yahya explained that tourism constitutes 4.01 of the GDP for 2014, foreign exchange generated by tourism is USD 10.69 billion; total employment in tourism sector at 10.3 million people; and the competitiveness of Indonesia’s tourism in 2013 was internationally ranked 70th according to the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Arief revealed that tourism in Indonesia in 2014 was quite good. So, the Ministry of Tourism is setting a higher target for tourist arrivals in 2015 to grow by 10 million or about 7-8 percent. The number of domestic tourists to reach 254 mil-lion people, with foreign exchange earnings of USD 12.05 billion and expenditure by domestic tourists at IDR 201.5 trillion and the number of workers in the tourism industry to reach 11.3 mil-lion people.

SEMARAPURA - Ahead of New Year 2015 celebrations, the explosion of firecrackers begins to be widespread in some area. Such is the case in Jungut Batu village, Nusa Penidawhere, residents have already begun extravagant ac-tivities to explode very hazardous firecrackers. Village authorities finally made a decision to pro-hibit any residents from exploding firecrackers in the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations.

This was announced by the

Head of Jungut Batu, Made Gede Suryawan on Tuesday (Dec 23), after attending the socialization of Law No. 6/2014 on the village administration at the Ida I Dewa Istri Kanya Cultural Hall. He said the prohibition was based on previous experiences where the celebrating the New Year’s Eve with the explosion of firecrackers had been very disturbing to public order. In addition, it could be very harmful to people if the firecrack-er exploded in their hands. He

said that a firecracker explosion had already claimed a victim in the past. Moreover, Jungut Batu area was also known as a tourist destination. Each day, hundreds of travelers came directly to Lem-bongan Island.

“Travelers who come to Jun-gut Batu seek tranquility. So, we should not disturb their holiday at Jungut Batu. We want to be a good host,” he said. After the ripples of firecracker explosion in recent weeks, Suryawan also claimed to

have received many complaints from residents and tourism play-ers. The majority of them said that they felt very disturbed. Some people delivered the complaint directly or by phone, SMS and social media.

Decision on the prohibition was made after his party orga-nized the last meeting on Monday (Dec 22) together with chief of the customary village, hamlet chief, police and military. He emphasized that anyone violat-

ing the new regulations would be strictly punished and processed directly by the police. With this agreement, local residents could understand that no more people would be igniting firecrackers, fireworks or other explosive types. With that decision, he hoped that the New Year’s Eve celebration would not make the village atmosphere rowdy and would remain comfortable and safe for anyone who comes to Jungut Batu. (kmb31)

“It was not provocative,” Giornetti said. “It was just the way you can dress now — to see that impeccable Italian suit with an eccentric touch of red socks and sneakers really underlined how sneakers are part of an elegant wardrobe.”

For Giornetti, who started as Fer-ragamo menswear creative director 15 years ago before adding the women’s portfolio, it is not so much about the sneaker as an object in and of itself, but about a coming-of-age in menswear. “It is about breaking your rules, ex-pressing your style and your persona,” Giornetti said.

Walk around the men’s shoe depart-ment of any upscale department store and leather footwear still dominates, but sneakers are getting a perch too. Don’t mistake this for “normcore,” a unisex fashion trend of everyday clothes that enjoyed a moment among fashionistas last spring. Style-watchers say it’s about freedom of expression, where the formal and the informal mix.

And fashionistas are willing to pay dress-shoe prices for the materials and workmanship that go into luxury sneakers.

In this Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014 file photo, a model wears sneakers at the a Missoni men’s Autumn-Winter 2014 collection unveiling during Milan Fashion Week in Milan, Italy.

From Ferragamo to Missoni, sneakers tread a trend

MILAN — Ferragamo creative director Massimiliano Gior-netti knew sneakers had truly arrived as a fashion statement when, at a formal dinner in Rome, he spotted a former Italian senator of a certain age wearing them with a pinstripe suit.

“For many men, they treat sneaker purchases in exactly the same way they would treat shoe purchases,” said Sam Lobban, senior buyer with MR-PORTER.COM, an on-line magazine and e-commerce site aimed at men.

Ferragamo, which is celebrating the 100th anniversary of company founder Salvatore Ferragamo’s emi-gration from Italy to the U.S. where he entered the luxury business through fine leather footwear, launched a new collection of sneakers this month. They include color block high-tops and sneakers in exotic skins, with prices ranging from $540 to for $3,400 for crocodile.

The list of designers sending sneak-ers down the fashion runways is growing, including Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Missoni.

Lanvin was one of the first to in-clude sneakers in their collection.

“Interestingly, the original style with patent toe-cap remains in the col-lection and is updated every season,” Lobban said.

GQ has approved eight sneakers to wear with suits — ranging from a pair of Alexander Wang pebbled leather

uppers, at $495, to Adidas’ Stan Smith, price tag $75, which Lobban said was the trainer to wear for summer 2014 “for its understated style.”

The appeal of sneakers is rooted in comfort, and Franklin Eugene, a Dubai-based stylist, said “it just makes sense” that men’s fashion houses would get in the game, noting that the range is growing ever more “stunning” in recent months.

“While there will always be those who opine that the only proper place for sneakers is the gym, as long there are men looking for comfort and style in the same product, sneakers will have a place in men’s fashion,” he said.

That sneaker-sporting Italian sena-tor needed no memo or seal of ap-proval for his style choice. Mario d’Urso, 74 and a banker by profession, topped Vanity Fair’s international

best-dressed list in 2011. Something of a style iconoclast, has been wear-ing sneakers anywhere they aren’t frowned upon — which excludes Buckingham Palace, where he has been a guest, and Harry’s Bar in Lon-don — for some time now.

“Now that you have put a bug in my ear, I think I’ll wear them to a dinner I am hosting tomorrow night in Rome,” d’Urso said by phone. (ap)

She continued that Kelan was a new destination which had not been seen, but had significant potential. Thus, it needed to be promoted. On that ac-count, Kelan was the most appropriate venue to implement the TIF. (may)

Timeless Indonesia Festival was commenced with the parade of dance taking place around the road section on Kelan Beach.

ObstacleThe Timeless Indonesia Festival

(TIF) inaugurated on Wednesday (Dec 24) seemed to face obstacles due to the presence of many yearend activities. According to Nyoman Kandia, a member of the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD), the previous target of 1,000 visitors per day could be achieved if only every hotel at Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sawangan, Pecatu and others brought their guests to TIF.

He admitted that not all hotels responded to his request. In addition, some hotels had already set up their own yearend events in their respective venue. Meanwhile, Herlinda Siahaan, President Director of PT Konderatu Duta Nusantara, admitted the TIF was the first event, so that it posed a very difficult struggle. “It is really not easy, we have been working for almost five months,” she said.

She also added if only the event was boosted by government like in terms of budget, it might take place better. As the time available was very short, her

party did not get the support. “Everything happening in the future may

be unfit, but it must have been anticipated,” she said. Building a destination with a new concept indeed took time. “So, I think it is okay, we are grateful to have been recognized by the government,” she concluded. (may)

“Enough Already!” and “Return Father Gregorio!” read banners carried by the marchers, who sang hymns as they marched to the city’s cathedral. Lopez Gorostieta’s pickup truck was found abandoned, and the church has filed a crime report with police, but the motive remains unclear.

“We haven’t received any de-mand for ransom,” said Martinez, who noted his diocese “has suf-fered a lot” from the drug cartel violence that has made the hot-lands region of southern Guerrero state one of the most dangerous in all of Mexico.

At least two priests have been killed in Guerrero state this year and

several others have been abducted, robbed or wounded in robbery at-tempts.

In September, the battered body of the Rev. Ascension Acuna Osorio was found floating in the Balsas river near his parish of San Miguel Totolapan, near Ciudad Altamirano. Guerrero state prosecutors said the priest’s body had head wounds, but it was unclear whether they were caused by the body being dragged by the current, or whether he had been killed before being dumped in the river. Prosecutors have offered the diocese no further explanation of his death.

Residents of San Miguel To-tolapan told reporters that Acuna

Osorio was well-liked in the town, but they were afraid to speak any further about him. The town is an area dominated by the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel, which has been implicated in the mass killing of 43 students in September in the nearby city of Iguala.

The area is so dangerous that Bishop Martinez said one priest had been briefly kidnapped in the moun-tains above San Miguel Totolapan by cartel gunmen who complained the priest had been speaking in favor of “La Familia” — the name of a rival drug cartel. The priest had to quickly explain he had been preaching in favor of family values, not the rival cartel.

HOUSTON — Former President George H.W. Bush will remain overnight Wednesday in a hospital where he was taken after experienc-ing shortness of breath, a family spokesman said. The 90-year-old Bush had been taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital on Tuesday evening as a precaution, spokesman Jim McGrath said. Bush had a “good day” and his prognosis “remains positive,” McGrath said in an email late on Wednesday.

Bush spent Christmas 2012 in intensive care at the same hospital while being treated for a bronchitis-related cough and other issues. He was discharged in January 2013, after nearly two months in the hos-pital. It was not immediately clear if Bush, who is the oldest living former president, would be able to spend this Christmas at home.

President Barack Obama, who is vacationing in Hawaii, has been notified about Bush’s hospital ad-

mission. “President Obama and the first lady send their good wishes to the former president and the entire Bush family during this holiday season,” said White House spokes-man Eric Schultz.

Bush made two public appear-ances last month. He attended an event at Texas A&M Univer-sity with his son, former President George W. Bush, and served as the coin-toss captain for the Houston Texans during a Nov. 23 game that honored the U.S. Armed Forces. The elder Bush was a naval aviator in World War II — at one point the youngest in the Navy — and was shot down over the Pacific.

Bush served two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president before be-ing elected America’s 41st president in 1988. After one term, highlighted by the success of the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, he lost to Democrat Bill Clinton amid voters’ concerns about the economy.(ap)

Priests march, protest attacks in southern Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Dozens of Roman Catholic priests and hundreds of parishioners marched through the southern Mexico city of Ciudad Altamirano on Wednesday to demand the release of a kidnapped priest and protest a series of kidnappings, killings and robberies of priests. The marchers were led by Bishop Maximino Martinez and about 30 white-robed priests. They called for the release of the Rev. Gregorio Lopez Gorostieta, who apparently was kidnapped from a local seminary on Monday. The Head of Baruna Sari Fishermen

Group on Jasri Beach, Ketut Patra, 43, who had been working as afisherman for 15 years, says he has come back from the sea empty-handed the last two months. “Usually, November to January is a pretty good time for fishing but this year we did not get any fish,” said Patra after fishing.

According to Patra, the fate of fisher-men depends on the presence fish but when fish are abundant, the price of fish in the marke drops. The price of young tuna is usually IDR 4,000 a piece, and has fallen to only IDR 500 a piece. Sometime fish are even thrown away because they could not be sold. The rise in fuel price also ensnared fishermen. “Recently when the catches were abundant, approximately 2,500 heads of tuna, they were finally discarded because they could not be sold,” he explained.

Young tuna must be sold within one day, otherwise they cause itching in the mouth if consumed. “When catches are plentiful, fishermen are resigned to low prices and thankful if they can be sold at all,” he complained.

The constraints faced by fishermen in Karangasem are caused by the absence of fish processing facilities. Actually, Karangasem is the largest supplier of tuna in Bali. Fish caught fishermen in Karan-gasem supply the fish boiling activities at Kusamba, Klungkung. “We bring our fish catches to Kusamba, and the price is determined there. Delivery cost are very high, especially the transportation, which diminishes our profits,” he added. (dwa)

DENPASAR - A cocaine smug-gler from Germany, Hans Peter, 48, on Tuesday began to be prosecuted in the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday (Dec 23). The man who departed from Thailand, and was arrested at the Ngurah Rai Airport, was indicted for smuggling cocaine. The modus operandi was to use the old model, namely swallowing cocaine capsules with lubricanting drink so that the capsules could be easily stored in the stomach.

Prosecutor Ketut Yasa, before a judicial panel led by Putu Gede Hari-

adi explained that on September 26 around 12:45 a.m. the accused was arrested in the customs area of the Ngurah Rai Airport. Before being arrested, the defendant was known to have met had met with Robert Wegner, in a restaurant in Thailand on September 25. He stated that he was going on holyiay to Bali.

The defendant was asked by his friend to bring cocaine to Bali, with the reward of USD 5,000 after arriv-ing in Bali. To deceive the officers, on Friday (Sep 26), the defendant drank wine yogurt as a lubricant to

swallow the cocaine capsules. The prosecutor explained there were a total of 38 cocaine capsules.

And, since the defendant was un-able to swallow the entire capsules to be smuggled, the defendant, stored the remaining 11 cocaine capsules in his underpants. He then, flew Air Asia to Denpasar. At 12:45 a.m. Bali Time, before all the passengers exited the airport area, they were examined by Customs officers using an X-ray device. When checked, the defendant was nervous, which kindled the suspi-

cion of the officers.Ultimately the officers found

11 capsules containing white solid matter, which was alleged to be cocaine preparation, weighing 201 grams gross or 139 grams net, in the defendant’s underpants.

Other than this evidence, the results of tests carried out by the team of the Bali Police Narcotics Unit, indicated that the defendant had swallowed 38 capsules of cocaine. By using laxative, some capsules could be secreted in the toilet. From the anus, a total of six

capsules containing cocaine could be secreted with the total weight of 38 grams gross or 29.88 grams net. The defendant told the officers that there were still some capsules in his intestine and was then taken to Trijata Hospital. An X-ray scan showed unidentified objects in the defendant’s stomach. After these were secreted, there were a total of 32 capsules weighing 159.25 grams gross or 202.19 gram net. The total weight of all the cocaine capsules reached 441.19 grams gross or 328.13 grams net. (kmb37)

AMLAPURA – The end of 2014 has been a hard time for the fishermen on Jasri Beach, Karangasem, including harch weather conditions, the fuel price hike which has made their oper-ating costs skyrocket as well lowered fish stocks and erratic market prices for the fish they do catch.

DENPASAR - The price of cocoa beans set by farmers in Bali is picking up to-ward the end of 2014 reaching Rp37,000 per kilograms from Rp34,000 earlier for the fermented type, and Rp34,500 up from Rp31,500 per kg for non-fermented beans.

“The good prices both on the domestic and international markets are expected to encourage farmers to expand plantation in Bali ,” Head of Regional Plantation Office I Dewa Made Buana Duwuran said here on Wednesday.

The price is predicted to grow further in 2015, Dewa Made said.

Cocoa in Bali is grown by farmers mainly in Jembrana, Tabanan and Buleleng.

Dewa Made said demand for coca beans comes from exporters in Bali and East Java.

The Industry and Trade office in Bali said coco bean exports from Bali reached 1.080 tons worth more than US$1 million in the first 10 months of the year.

The export earning rose 55 percent from US$709,968 in the same period in 2013.

Exports have been made to the United States, Australia, Britain, Germany, Finland, Japan and Malaysia.

Indonesia is currently the world’s third largest producer of coco bean after the Ivory Coast and Ghana of Africa.

Economies around the world seemed to have adjusted to higher priced oil and oil companies were using high profits and debt from willing lenders to scour the world

for new reserves. There was no real hope or

expectation that U.S. drivers would see a price at the pump that started with a $2 ever again.

Then, despite intense turmoil in the Middle East and an im-proving economy in the U.S. — things that have historically sent oil prices soaring — the price of oil went into a nosedive. In the second half of 2014, it dropped by half, to depths not seen since May of 2009 when the U.S. was in the Great Recession. By De-cember, some drivers even saw a price at the pump that started with a $1.

Oil reached a high for the year of $107 in late June after Islamic State fighters in Iraq seemed poised to threaten Iraq’s southern oil fields and disrupt

supplies from OPEC’s second largest exporter. Then, as Islamic State’s advance was halted, and Libya ramped up its production, oil began to drift lower.

Oil slipped further in the fall as signs emerged that global de-mand was weakening. The plunge accelerated in late November when OPEC decided to keep producing the same amount of oil despite the low demand.

Oil production in the U.S., Canada, Iraq and elsewhere had been climbing for several years, but rising demand in China and other developing nations along with sporadic outages around the world kept supply and demand in balance.

The price of oil remained remarkably steady, near $100 a barrel, for nearly four years. But U.S. oil production surged far

beyond what even the most opti-mistic forecasts predicted. By the end of 2014, U.S. drillers were producing 9 million barrels of oil per day, up 80 percent since 2008 and the most in 3 decades.

At the same time, growth in demand for oil began to weaken. China, the biggest single source of oil demand growth in recent years, saw its economic expan-sion begin to slow. Japan slipped deeper into recession and West-ern Europe’s economic struggles continued. The U.S. economy — the world’s biggest oil consumer — grew nearly 4 percent over the summer, but efficiency measures and changing demographics in the U.S. are reducing demand for oil.

With rising global supplies and weak demand, prices dropped. (ap)

TOKYO - Citigroup said Thurs-day it was selling its century-old Japanese retail banking operations to major lender Sumitomo Mitsui as part of an effort to shrink its consumer business globally.

Financial details were not re-leased, but Japanese news reports

estimated the deal to be worth about 40 billion yen ($333 million).

Under the agreement, Sumitomo unit SMBC Trust Bank would ac-quire Citibank Japan’s operations in-cluding 32 retail branches, 740,000 customers, 1,600 employees, and deposits worth 2.5 trillion yen.

The transaction is expected to be completed in late 2015.

“The sale represents another step in Citi’s strategy of further streamlining its Global Consumer Bank,” the US com-pany said in a statement, adding that it would keep its profitable Japanese commercial banking operations.

The US firm entered the Japanese market in 1902, one of the first foreign lenders to operate in the country.

Since the US bank brought in a new chief in late 2012, it has been cutting retail operations in a host of countries, including Honduras, Turkey, Romania, and Uruguay.

In Japan, low interest rates, fol-lowing years of economic slump, have squeezed retail businesses.

Two years ago British giant HSBC withdrew from retail bank-ing in Japan and there are relatively few foreign lenders offering such services in the country. (afp)

Oil Plunge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------Who Wins--------------------------------------------------------------------------Drivers, shippers, airlines and other consumers of fuel around

the world are benefiting from sharply lower prices, and importing countries are benefiting from improving trade balances. U.S. drivers are paying $2.38 a gallon for gasoline on average, the lowest since May of 2009. A typical household will save $550 over the course of the next year because of lower prices. Diesel and jet fuel prices have also plunged, helping boost the profits and share prices of airlines and shippers. The Dow Jones Transportation Index was up 23 per-cent through late December, compared with a 13 percent gain for the broader U.S. market.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------Who Loses--------------------------------------------------------------------------For oil companies, oil-producing states, and oil-exporting countries

the oil price plunge has been excruciating. Oil companies generally continue to produce oil from wells they’ve already drilled when prices fall. But sharply lower revenue forces them to cut spending on new exploration projects, makes it harder for them to raise money, and worries lenders and investors that they won’t be able to pay off debt. BP announced last week efforts to trim $1 billion in spending next year. States that rely on taxes from energy production such as Alaska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas will see lower revenues and some have already trimmed budgets. Major oil exporters such as Iran, Iraq, Russia and Venezuela rely heavily on revenues from state-owned oil companies to run their governments and are struggling under major budget shortfalls.

Financial shocker of the year

Oil at $60NEW YORK — For the first half of 2014 the oil market looked

“We have also involved the pecalang. It is remarkable that in Bali, pecalang are involved in safe-guarding each banjar (traditional hamlet),” Chief of Bali Provincial Police Command Inspector General Albertus Julius Benny Mokalu re-marked on Wednesday.

Pecalang will join police officers and military personnel in the Operasi Lilin (Candle Operation), an opera-tion to guard against security threats

and traffic problems that could dis-rupt the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, which are expected to last until January 2, 2015.

During the operation, the peca-lang will also help to secure some tourism destinations across the region of Bali.

Bali has 1,488 traditional villages, each of which has around 30 peca-lang, while 736 administrative villag-es are supported by Babinkamtibmas,

who are basically police officers that cooperate with the pecalang and are assigned to villages as advisors on security and public order.

In the meantime, the Bali Provin-cial Police Command has deployed 3,684 police personnel to safeguard the Christmas and 2015 New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bali.

The police will double its force at several vital locations such as churches, tourism destinations, and other crowded places in Bali.

The police will also be deployed to safeguard some entry gates to the island such as in Gilimanuk Port of

Jembrana District and Padangbai Port of Karangasem District to anticipate threats from terror at-tacks similar to the incident that took place on Monday night (Dec. 22). During a security operation in Banyuwangi, East Java, the Nation-al Police’s counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, arrested a terror suspect allegedly linked to the 2002’s Bali bomb attack.

On Tuesday, District Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commission-er Tri Bisono Sumiharso confirmed the arrest of AM (44), a resident of Puri Brawijaya Permai housing

estate in Kebalenan.AM, a resident of Banyuwangi,

was arrested at around 7:30 p.m. local time and has been taken to the national police headquarter.

Asmoro, the head of the housing estate neighborhood, revealed that the suspect was a businessman sell-ing crackers made from fish skin. He has a wife and three children.

He pointed out that AM lived with his in-laws in Penganjuran village, Banyuwangi. He was not a local resident but hailed from Sema-rang, Central Java, according to his identification card (ID). (ant)

DENPASAR - Some 12 foreign prison inmates in Bali Province received Christmas remission, according to an official at Bali’s Law and Human Rights Ministry. “They have fulfilled the requirements for remission and have displayed good behavior during their prison sentence,” Head of the Law and Human Rights Office of Bali Kompiang Adnyana said.

According to him, the foreign inmates received remission are Edward Norman Myatt (55) and Renae Lawrence (36), both from Australia; Marisa Castino Gibson (32) and Maria Cecilia Jusay Lopez (32) from the Philippines; Tine Rasmussen (37) from Denmark; and British inmates Julian Anthony Ponder (43) and Paul Beales.

Besides them, two Russian inmates Anton Pudokov (35) and Revaz Tolordava; Manuel Henrique Soares from Timor Leste; Jimmy Cyril Visser from South Africa; and Jan Ja-cobus Vogel from the Netherlands will also get remission.

He noted that 11 inmates will get one-month reduction in their sentences, while Australian inmate Renae Lawrence will get two-month cut, which will also be the maximum remission that will be delivered officially on Thursday (Dec 25).

While the majority of the inmates were mostly involved in narcotics cases, and those from Timor Leste, South Africa, and the Netherlands were convicted for child sexual abuse. (ant)

The two murder convicts will be executed in Nusakambangan Island off Central Java’s southern coast, Head of the Legal Information Center of the AGO Tony T Spontana said on Thursday.

The death row convicts have been identified as GS and TJ. GS has been convicted of a premeditated murder in North Jakarta while TJ has been convicted of a premeditated murder in Tanjung Balai Karimun in Riau prov-ince, he noted.

Spontana observed that the execu-tion of another four death row convicts, which was originally planned to be held this year, has been delayed pending their legal certainty. The four have been convicted of drug-related crimes.

There will be no cancellation of the planned executions, he stressed.

He explained that the Attorney Gen-eral’s Office will coordinate with the Supreme Court as the Constitutional Court has received more than two ap-plications for a judicial review of the cases. “Of course, we will coordinate with the Supreme Court with regard to two more requests for judicial review,” he added.

Attorney General HM Prasetyo has denied that the executions scheduled for 2014 will be cancelled. “Nobody has said that. You have misquoted a state-ment. There will be no cancellation,” he pointed out.

According to Prasetyo, he has dis-cussed the matter with the Supreme

Court to reach a solution after the Con-stitutional Court ruled that application for a judicial review of a legal case can be filed more than once.

In 2013, the AGO executed Suryadi from Palembang, South Sumatra, for killing a family in Pupuk Sriwijaya complex in 1991. Two others, Jurit and Ibrahim, were also executed for premeditated murder in Sekayu, Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatra, in 2003.

In 2013, the AGO executed Moham-mad Abdul Hafeez from Pakistan and Adami Wilson, alias Adam alias Abu, from Malawi following their convic-tions for narcotics crimes.

A total of 118 convicts have been executed in the country so far, accord-ing to data from the AGO. (ant)

SUKABUMI - Some 35 to 40 landslides struck Su-kabumi District, West Java Province, during December 2014, stated a local official.

“During December, landslides are very likely to take place because heavy rains and strong winds oc-cur almost every day,” Usman Susilo of the Sukabumi disaster mitigation office noted here recently.

In November 2014, the district was affected by 37 landslides that ravaged tens of houses.

On December 22, an eight-month-old infant died after being buried in the debris of a landslide, and the parents’ limbs were injured as their house collapsed due to the landslide.

The local disaster mitigation office plans to propose to the Sukabumi District Head Sukmawijaya to declare an emergency status in the district as the intensity of rains is expected to increase in January and February, which could lead to more landslides.

In the meantime, the Geophysics, Meteorology and Climatology Agency (BMKG) has forecast that Indone-sia’s ongoing rainy season will peak between January and February 2015.

“Weather forecast for the coming three months indi-cates that the rainy season in Java will peak during the January-February 2015 period,” BMKG Chief Andi Eka Sakya remarked in Jakarta on Tuesday (Dec. 23).

As the rainy season will peak in January-February, the people have been urged to stay alert for landslides and floods, particularly in disaster-prone areas.

JAKARTA - The government, through the Directorate General of Correctional Institute of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has granted special Christmas sentence remissions to 9,068 prisoners across the country, a senior official stated. “Of the number, 98 inmates who are eligible under the Special Remission II category can directly walk free,” Director General of the Correctional Institute Han-doyo Sudrajat stated on Thursday.

He said that special remissions were granted to 9,068 Christian inmates who came from all penitentiaries across the country. The granting of sentence remissions is based on Presidential Decree No. 175/1999 on Remission and Government Regulation (PP) No. 99/2012 on the second amendment of PP No. 32/1999 on the procedures of imple-menting the rights of inmates.

The director general stated that the sentence remissions were awarded to offer motivation and to raise awareness among inmates about maintaining good conduct while serving their jail terms.

Based on available official data until December 24, 2014, there are 162,218 prisoners and detainees in Indonesia, comprising 110,411 inmates and 51,807 detainees.

AGO confirms to execute two convicts end of year

JAKARTA - The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has confirmed it will execute two death row convicts at the end of this year.

In France, the busy Christmas period has been marred by a series of attacks, including one linked to Islamic extremism, which killed one person and left another 25 wounded.

In the United States, officials scrambled to contain renewed an-ger after an armed black teenager was shot dead by a white officer in a St Louis suburb late Tuesday.

On Christmas morning in Aus-tralia, church leaders reflected on several tragedies that hit the country this year, including the Sydney cafe siege, where two hostages and the gunman died, the killings of eight children in Cairns and the Malaysia Airlines MH370 and MH17 flight disasters.

In Sierra Leone, all public Christmas festivities were can-celled as a result of the Ebola crisis, with soldiers deployed over the holiday season to prevent spontaneous street celebrations, officials said.

Ahead of the midnight mass in Bethlehem, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas laid out his own Christmas wish list.

“This Christmas we deliver a very special message to the world: All I want for Christmas is jus-tice,” he said as the Palestinians press a major diplomatic push at

The attacks late Tuesday in As-sam state’s Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts are blamed on a faction of an indigenous Bodo separatist group. The rebels from the Bodo tribe have been targeting other communities they consider outsiders — Adivasis, whose ancestors migrated to Assam more than 100 years ago to work on tea plantations — as well as Mus-lims, accusing them and the federal government of exploiting the region’s wealth while neglecting the locals.

The violence has left at least 10,000 people dead, most of them civilians, in the last three decades. In May, the same rebel faction called the National Democratic Front of Bodoland shot and killed more than 30 Muslims. In the latest attack, the area of Shamukjuli saw some of the worst bloodshed with 26 people killed. Police said many were women

and children.“There will be no celebrations for

Christmas for us,” Vor said as she wept. The Adivasis are a mix of Hin-dus and Christians, and many like Vor were preparing for Christmas when the attack took place.

In a nearby school that opened its doors to the refugees, 7-year-old Sanjlai Hemrom looked afraid and traumatized as he sat silently with his younger brother. Villagers said the boys lost both parents in the attacks. A curfew remained in the two districts Thursday, but there were no reports of fresh violence, said S.N. Singh, a local police official.

Bodos make up 10 percent of As-sam’s 33 million people and took up arms as long-simmering tensions over land and jobs morphed into the ethnic violence pitting one tribe against an-other. They are among dozens of rebel

groups fighting the government and sometimes each other in seven states in northeast India.

The rebels may have been pro-voked by heavy losses they suf-fered recently as police intensified operations against the group, Singh said. There were concerns the violence could spill over.

Following the attacks, angry Adi-vasis surrounded a police station in Sonitpur on Wednesday and attempted to attack the officers inside, police said. Police opened fire, killing three, Singh said. He also said there were incidents of Bodo homes being at-tacked, but troops had managed to control the situation.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the attacks, and the Home Ministry rushed several thousand federal paramilitary troops to the region. (ap)

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II will use her traditional Christmas broadcast to call for international reconciliation and to praise medical workers fighting Ebola in Africa.

The queen plans to say she has been “deeply touched” by the “selflessness” of doctors and nurses combating the Ebola outbreak.

Each year the queen writes her own Christmas speech, which is pre-

recorded and televised in many parts of the world on the afternoon of Christ-mas Day. She made her first Christmas broadcast on radio in 1952.

The queen plans to celebrate the holiday with her husband Prince Philip and other senior royals at the San-dringham estate in Norfolk, England.

The 6-foot-11 Varejao, one of the team’s most popular players, was positioning under the basket for a rebound in the third quarter when he crumpled to the floor in pain. All of Cleveland’s players and coaches came over to check on him before he was assisted off the floor without putting any weight on his leg. He left Quicken Loans Arena following the game on crutches with his leg in an im-mobilizing air cast.

The Cavs traveled to Miami on

Wednesday for a Christmas Day game against the Heat, the first regular-season matchup between LeBron James and the superstar’s former team. Varejao’s injury has stolen some of the buzz from that game as the Cavs are dealing with an injury that could alter their season.

With Varejao out, Tristan Thompson will likely move into a starting role and the Cavs will sharpen their pursuit of another big man. The Cavs had been looking for a rim-protecting center and have had trade discussions with several teams. Reserves Brendan Haywood and Lou Amundson could also get more playing time as first-year coach David Blatt looks for ways to compensate for the loss of Varejao, one of the league’s most unique players.

Favored to win the Eastern Conference, the Cavs have made inquiries about Denver’s Timofey Mozgov and Memphis center Kosta Koufos. Cleveland has a protected first-round pick from a previous deal with the Grizzlies they could use to land front-line

help.Varejao, who signed a three-

year, $30 million contract ex-tension in October, averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in 26 starts. But beyond his stats, Varejao also contributes with his endless hustle and positive attitude. He’s one of James’ fa-vorite teammates and the 11-year veteran has endeared himself to Cleveland fans with his energy and effort. Varejao has averaged 7.9 points and 7.8 rebounds in his career. He has missed 166 games with injuries over the past four seasons. During the preseason, the Cavs went to Varejao’s native Bra-zil to play an exhibition against the Heat. Varejao was greeted as a national hero in his homeland and said the trip was one of the highlights of his career.

After a slow start, the Cavs have won 12 of 15 games and Blatt has gotten more comfortable with his rotations. Varejao’s injury compli-cates things and could rush the Cavs into making a major roster move well before the February trading deadline.(ap)

SYDNEY — The crew of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race’s defending champion Wild Oats XI spent most of Christmas Day on Sydney Harbour trying to make up for four days of lost prepara-tion ahead of Friday’s start. Bob Oatley’s super maxi, which is at-tempting a record eighth line honors win, broke its boom last weekend and skipper Mark Richards said his team had been working around the clock to fix the issue ahead of the traditional Boxing Day start.

The boom mishap affected the crew’s final week of preparations for a race featuring four other super maxis, including the recently-launched American yacht Comanche.

The 117-boat fleet is expected to have a bumpy first night at sea, with southerlies gusting up to 30 knots and choppy conditions. “We’ll be sailing all day Christmas Day,” Wild Oats XI skipper Mark Rich-ards said. “We’ve missed four days of important preparation and we’ve got to try and make that up.”

Richards doesn’t anticipate his boat’s race record of 1 day, 18

hours, 23 minutes, 12 seconds set in 2012 will be challenged this year. Wild Oats won line honors for the seventh time last year, finishing the 628-nautical mile race in 2 days, 6 hours, 7 minutes. The race begins in Sydney Harbour, heads south along the coast of New South Wales state and across Bass Strait to the island state of Tasmania and its capital city Hobart.

Perpetual Loyal owner Anthony Bell said the weather forecast didn’t appear to significantly favor any of the big boats. “For us to do well in this race, we probably have to chance our arm a little bit,” Bell said. Comanche skipper Ken Read was blunt: “We’ll all work our hard-est to keep our Christmas dinners down.” Read is eager to find out how his new 100-footer performs in testing race conditions.

“We (will) try to keep it in one piece, we try to anticipate the best we possibly can, but this is a com-pletely untested boat at this stage,” Read said. “We’re as ready as we’ll ever be. It’s time to go see what this thing can do.” (ap)

Cavaliers’ Varejao out for season with torn tendon

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Anderson Varejao, left, from Brazil, puts pressure on Milwaukee Bucks’ Zaza Pachulia, from Georgia, dur-ing the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, in Cleveland. The Cavaliers defeated the Bucks 111-108.

CLEVELAND — Anderson Varejao’s season has ended, dealing a major blow to the Cavaliers’ NBA title hopes. Cleveland’s starting center tore his left Achilles tendon on Tuesday night in a win over Minnesota, an injury that will cost him the rest of this season and will force the Cavs to look for immediate help up front. The Cavs said an MRI confirmed the feared tear and that Varejao will undergo surgery “in the near future.” A timetable for his return and rehab will not be established until after the operation.

His off-field antics have also made the headlines and he was fined 25,000 pounds and banned for last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal after posting an offensive message on social media.

At his pre-match news confer-ence Rodgers welcomed mercu-rial Balotelli’a return for a busy holiday programme, starting with a trip to lowly Burnley on Friday, but suggested the for-mer Manchester City player is not suited to Liverpool’s style. “We’ve seen that it is not really his game, Rodgers said, referring to the high-pressing approach that worked so well with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in tandem last season.

“Working with Mario, we’ve seen that he is someone who is better in and around the box. That

level of pressing and intensity is not part of his game. “But you try to make the best out of the players you have, and the qualities that they have. That’s something we will focus on.

“The most important thing is that he’s now available after his ban. It adds another player to our squad, which is important espe-cially with Fabio (Borini) now suspended.”

Liverpool are 10th and though they got one point in their last two games -- a defeat at Man-chester United and a home draw with Arsenal -- they are starting to recapture the verve of last sea-son when they were pipped to the title by Manchester City.

Holiday fixtures against Burn-ley, Rodgers’ former club Swan-sea City and struggling Leicester City, offer Liverpool the chance to start making up lost ground. “We’ve tried to find the solution to get back that intensity and that tempo, and I think we’ve seen that,” Rodgers said.

“It’s key for us, that aggressive pres-sure at the top end of the field. It gives us the platform to go on and dominate the ball

“We have to try to maxi-mise the players that we have to make sure our game is as close as possible to the level we want. The last three games has been a lot closer.”(rtr)

side Cagliari, replac-ing Dzenek Zemen, who was sacked this week after two wins in 16 matches left them in the relegation zone, the club said on Wednesday.

“Welcome back, Gianfran-co,” the club said on its website announcing the appointment of Zola, who previously played for the Italian club as well as English Premier League side Chelsea.

The 67-year-old Zemen, a Czech, took charge of Cagliari in July but the Sardinians have not won a home league game in this campaign and sit 18th, with only Cesena and Parma below them.

Zeman was fired by AS Roma last February following a disastrous nine months in charge that saw the club lose nine times in 23 games, leaving them languishing mid-table.(rtr)

MIAMI — American forward Abby Wambach has been voted CON-CACAF’s Female Player of the Year and Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas was honored as Male Player of the Year.

The governing body of soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean said Tuesday that Wambach won after finishing second to U.S. teammate Alex Morgan last year’s inaugural awards. Costa Rican mid-fielder Shirley Cruz was second and Mexican forward Charlyn Corral third in voting by national team coaches and captains, media and fans.

Navas was followed by Costa Rican forward Bryan Ruiz and American goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Howard won his second straight Goalkeeper of the Year award, and Costa Rica’s Jorge Luis Pinto was Coach of the Year. Ruiz won Goal of the Year for his shot against Italy during the World Cup, and Mark Geiger was Referee of the Year after becoming the first American to referee a knockout-rounds match at the World Cup.(ap)

LONDON - After nearly 20 years spent working through the Christmas holidays Rio Ferdinand could be forgiven if he wanted to put his feet up and enjoy the fruits of his long career. Instead, the former Manchester United and England defender is hoping to be as busy as possible during the packed festive fixture list, helping Queens Park Rangers edge away from the wrong end of the Premier League.

Since leaving Manchester Unit-ed after 12 trophy-laden years last summer, the 36-year-old has found opportunities at QPR limited and has made only four appearances for the club managed by Harry Redknapp -- his first boss when he broke into the West Ham United team as a teenager.

With QPR facing three games in six days, however, starting with a London derby at Arsenal on Fri-

day, Ferdinand is ready for action, if required.

“It’s a beautiful day for train-ing,” the father of three told Sky Sports from QPR’s training ground early on Friday. “It reminds me a little bit of (Ryan) Giggs at Man-chester United, he never really got his boots on until Christmas. “I played a bit at the beginning of the season and come out of the team and hopefully now I will get

some minutes.“We’ve not got the blessings of

the biggest squad in this league, we’ve got 25 players, a small group that the manager rotates and he will have to utilise us so we can stay fresh.” Ferdinand made more than 400 appearances for United and won nearly every honour in the game, but life at QPR is throwing up new challenges.

“I was under no illusions that

this was going to be a difficult sea-son, a different season,” he said. “But I’ve been really enjoying it, it’s a great experience, even if I’m having to get used to looking up in the league rather than down.

“I didn’t come in there think-ing it would be the same as Man-chester United. Hopefully I can get back in and help the team accumulate enough points to stay in this league.”(rtr)

Cameroon have left in-form West Ham United midfielder Alex Song out of their 23-man squad for next month’s African Nations Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea which was named on Tuesday. Song had asked the English Premier League club to be released for the tourna-ment despite fears over the Ebola virus but is not in the plans of coach Volker Finke, who has ignored the 27-year-old since this year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Song was sent off for elbowing Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic in a 4-0 group stage World Cup defeat and handed a three-match ban from competitive internationals by FIFA.

Song’s omission will be a relief for West Ham man-ager Sam Allardyce, who is expected to lose defen-sive duo Diafra Sakho and Cheikhou Kouyate for the tournament, with Senegal’s squad sched-uled to be announced on Friday. Finke has retained just eight play-

Oil at $60NEW YORK — For the first half of 2014 the oil market looked

just as it had the year before — and the 2 years before that. Oil was over $100 and drivers in the U.S. were paying around $3.50 for gasoline.

(ant)

(kmb37)

(ap)

(may)

According to the Minister of Tourism, the number of foreign tourist visiting Indonesia dur-ing the period of January to October amounted to 7,755,616 people. The sum of tourist visits in October 2014 amounted to 808,767 people grow-ing 12.34 percent and if the numbers for November and December 2014 are significant, then he felt optimistic that the end of year target could be achieved..

“The tourism achievements in 2014 are the foundation for setting the target in 2019 whose magnitude is twice that of this year.” said Arief

(kmb31)

The Eastwoods have been married since March 1996. They met when she was assigned to in-terview the 83-year-old actor for a TV news station. Clint Eastwood was previously married to Maggie Johnson from 1953 to 1984.
