IN the past few years Hyundaihas gone from the maker ofcheap and cheerful motors tooffering stylish and highquality products.

And the Korean company’s latestoffering, the sleekly styled i40Tourer, on sale in September, canonly take the brand up a furthernotch.

Many estates still retain a boxyappearance, but the i40 looksanything but, with sweepingsculpted lines, slim windows and alow stance which give it theappearance of a much moreup-market, sporty motor.

It doesn’t only look the business,it handles and drives almost as wellas some competitors in the samesector which cost considerablymore.

Hyundai says it is majoring onthree guiding principles: price,quality and emotion, and in the i40the car maker has got it bang on.

The i40 estate will be up againstthe likes of the Ford Mondeo, VWPassat, Vauxhall Insignia andCitroen C5, which are all moreexpensive, and the Hyundai comesloaded with equipment whichmakes it even more desirable.

Power for the i40 Tourer comesfrom both petrol and diesel engines– a 1.6 and 1.7-litre diesel and2.0-litre petrol. Transmissions are6-speed manual and 6-speedautomatic.

Hyundai UK says the 1.7-litre136bhp version is likely to be thebiggest seller.

The oil-burner is quiet andrefined and fuel consumption forthe 136bhp is claimed at 55 mpg,while CO2 emissions are low at 119g/km.

Performance from this package isa top speed of 124 mph and a 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds.

Designed specifically for theEuropean market at Hyundai’sGerman R&D headquarters inRusselsheim the new tourer’s

interior is particularlyimpressive with loads of room

for driver and passengers,quality soft plastic panels

and nice touches ofbrushed aluminium

features.Seating iscomfortable

and I like theclarity of

the dialsand

switches. Load space is huge, withfigures ranging from 553 litres up to1,719 litres with the rear seatsfolded.

Despite the shallow windowdesign I found that all-roundvisibility was good and the drivingposition easily attainable withseveral seating adjustments tochoose from. The suspension soaked

up the few bumps I encountered onthe Norwegian press launch routebut I wonder what it will be like onour horrendous potholed UK roads.

The i40 Tourer will be availablein three trim levels - Active, Styleand Premium - and the equipmentlevel is impressive, even on theentry-level model.

Features include 16-inch alloys,

seven airbags, air conditioning,anti-lock brakes, automaticheadlights, Bluetooth connectivity,brake assist system, electric frontand rear windows, heated doormirrors, electronic parking brakeand automatic hold function, frontfog lights, hill-start assist, steeringwheel audio controls, radio/CDplayer, trip computer and more.

Options include a lane-assistsystem, automatic parking andpanoramic roof on certain models.

The entry level Active GDi BlueDrive comes in at £18,395, with the1.7 CRDi 135 bhp Auto at £25,895.

Hyundai is on target this year tosell 64,000 cars in the UK which willmake its market share 3.3 per cent,up from just 1.8 per cent in 2008.

A RECORD gathering of Citroën 2CVs is setto take place from July 26-31 at the 19thInternational Amis de la 2CV - an eventexpected to attract over 6,000 examples ofthe iconic Citroën model.

Held every two years, the meetingattracts participants from all over the worldwho come together to celebrate one ofCitroën’s longest-running success stories.

The 2011 event, involving many ofEurope’s 2CV owner’s clubs, promises to bethe biggest yet.

In the setting of a 60-hectare site nearSalbris in central France, four pre-warprototype 2CVs will be on show alongsidethe contemporary Citroën REVOLTe

concept – an experimental electric carinspired by the “CV design.

Originally developed in the 1930s, most ofthe 250 prototype 2CVs were destroyedbefore the Second World War - with theexception of three, which were hidden tostop them falling into enemy hands. Thefourth was stored by Michelin.

The 2CV was finally unveiled at the 1948Paris Motor Show, before going on tobecome a French classic with 5,114,940 soldbetween 1948 and 1990.

It was also made in the UK for a time, inSlough from 1953 to around 1960 , andthese UK-built models are now highlysought-after.

THE looks were a mixture ofstunned amazement anddisbelief, the sort ofexpressions you wish you’dcaptured with a camcorder.

There I was, slap bang in themiddle of a busy shopping street,manoeuvring a Ford Focus into atight parking spot – waving topassers-by with both hands.

Some reckoned it was a DavidBlaine-type illusion; others thatthere was a little crouching manturning the steering wheel to order.

What no one realised was thatthis is the Ford Focus that parksitself, and the whole process is morethan just impressive. It’s spooky.

All you do is press the Auto Parkbutton, use the indicators to showwhich side of the road you want andthe system will search for a spec.

The magic eye locates andassesses gaps between cars until adashboard display lights up withthe words Parking Spot Found, at

which point you drive on a fewyards, engage reverse gear andfollow the prompt to remove yourhands from the steering wheel.

A light touch on the accelerator,the steering wheel spins this wayand that, and next thing the car hasbeen shoehorned into the space.

It’s so good it’s addictive – youcan spend a morning entertainingthe crowds as the Focus squeezesinto ever shrinking spots.

Of course there’s a price to pay.For those not buying therange-topping Titanium X trim onwhich it’s standard, the tab for

Active Park Assist is £525. Thatsaid, it’s worth every penny.
