Immunization Records: Minnesota law requires that all children attending Early Childhood Family Education programs on a weekly basis have their immunizations up-to-date. State law requires that you update child immunization information when you register for your first ECFE class of a school year. After that we will keep them on file and subsequent copies will not be necessary for 2012-13 programs. If your child is behind in immunizations, he/she can catch up. Scott County residents may receive immunizations at their doctor’s office or at the following clinics:

Scott County Public Health Valley Green Work Force Center

792 Canterbury Road South Shakopee, MN 55379

Every Monday (except holidays): 1:00-5:00 p.m. • Cost: $10.00/shot. No one will be refused if unable to pay. • Please bring immunization records to the clinic.

What if I have more than 1 child? What if I have more than 1 child? You can:1. Take separate classes with each child.

Each child can be registered for 1 class per session.

2. Use our wonderful sibling care option to have your child’s siblings cared for at a reasonable fee, while you attend class with your other child. You register for sibling care at the same time you register your child for a class

3. Take a multi-age class where you can have all of your children in 1 class together.

FYI - Sibling Care is not “drop in,” registration is required to ensure adequate staffing.

What can I expect out of ECFE?• Support for your role as a parent.• Research-based information on child development.• Fun, experiential learning activities for young children.• Connection to community resources.• Relationships with other parents in the community.

Who teaches ECFE classes?ECFE classes are taught by Parent Educators and Early Childhood Educators who are licensed through the MN Department of Education. Teaching Assistants have a combination of training and experience. Together, staff partner to make classrooms successful learning environments for all.

What happens in a typical ECFE class?ECFE classes have three components:

1. Parent and Child Interaction: an early childhood teacher provides developmentally appropriate activities for parents and children to enjoy together.

2. Guided Play for Children: a portion of the class is devoted to learning through play with our staff while parents participate in parent education topics, depending on the child’s age this may occur in a separate room or in the children’s class space.

3. Parent Education: parents and caregivers participate in a discussion led by a licensed parent educator. Joys and challenges of parenting are shared and topic discussions are designed to address the developmental issues of each age group.

Early Childhood ScreeningThe early childhood years from birth to the start of kindergarten are important times of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing and developing offered through the Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools. Between the ages of 3 and 4, screening can detect possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before they start school. Parents may accompany their child through the approximate hour-long process. After the screening activities, the screener shares information on a child’s

growth, development, and learning.

An important step on the road to Kindergarten includes Early Childhood Screening.

Baby Sign Language - 3 Week Class Why would a parent consider using sign language with their baby? • Bonding: Research has confirmed that signers enjoy a stronger parental bond.• Reduced Fussiness: A lot of fussiness is caused by a baby wanting something but not being able to communicate his need to you.

Research has shown that signing babies are better able to get their needs met.• Development: Baby sign language is a good structured activity to help babies develop cognitively. Studies show that babies who

have early exposure to signing, have larger speaking vocabularies earlier.

Baby and Parent Yoga – 3 Week Class This introductory class will be taught by a certified baby yoga instructor. Yoga advocates say that yoga can help parents and infants bond, and promote development of motor skills. And just as yoga helps adults become more aware of their bodies, yoga can help parents become attuned to their babies wants and needs.

Infant Massage – 3 Week Class Massage can be a relaxing, bonding time for you and your little one. Studies have shown your nurturing touch also promotes physiological, neurological, and psychological development. To ensure safe practices, this class will be taught by a certified Infant Message instructor.

Maternity leave is accommodated and fees are prorated.

Non-Separating, Gradually Separating, Separating Classes - How to choose what is right for you and your child:NON-SEPARATING CLASSES, parenting discussions take place in the early childhood classroom. These classes are the perfect choice when:• You are enrolling in an infant class. You’ll be nearby to meet your baby’s needs while discovering more about your remarkable

newborn. • You want more time in the early childhood classroom to enjoy and observe your child.• You or your child feels uncomfortable about separating. it is natural to feel this way from time to time and non-separating

classes give you the option to remain in the children’s room together.

GRADUALLY SEPARATING CLASSES introduce families to time apart in steadily increasing increments. Parenting discussions will be held in the early childhood classroom during the first two sessions of the quarter. Parents/caregivers leave the room for a short time on week three, working towards 30 to 40 minutes of time in a separate parent discussion space. This type of class works best when:• You and your child are ready to practice with independence in safe and

predictable surroundings.• You can attend regularly. Missed classes make it hard for children and adults to

become comfortable with the routine and the environment.• You work with staff to develop and apply an intentional separation plan that fits

your family as well as the other parents and children in the classroom.

SEPARATING CLASSES, parents/caregivers spend some time learning and exploring with their children followed by scheduled time to talk with other adults. Separating classes are a good fit when:• Your child or children are ready for more time with teachers and peers in preparation for preschool or kindergarten.• You are ready for more time to meet and talk with other adults.• ECFE classes are your three- to five-year old child’s primary or only preschool experience.

What a great combination Math and Art! Combining these two topics will use both sides of the parent’s and child’s brain. Researchers have found that being actively involved in a form of art can strengthen the attention networks in children’s brains. And by directing young children’s attention to mathematics by looking at, and learning about, the world around them. You may come clean and go home dirty.

Growing a Preschooler

Family ConnectionsWhat is Family Connections? An opportunity for families to connect with each other and share the joys and concerns of parenting a child who has special needs.

It’s a great way to meet other parents and their children, while learning about your child. This is a support program providing a safe, non-threatening atmosphere for sharing and understanding life’s changes and feelings related to having a child with special needs. Parents come together from different backgrounds; all of the children are unique and have different needs. We hope that through the group, parents can help each other cope with any day to day challenges encountered, and develop a sense that they are not alone. Siblings of all ages are welcome to attend class as well.
