    Hello Brothers and Co-workers,

Well, the roller-coaster continues...and I for one am ready to get off the ride! As you know,

Calaveras County has moved to the Purple Tier. This means all services have to be provided

outdoors. With winter weather looming and temperatures staying low, it’s not practical to keep our

doors open at this time. The Lodge will be closed for the month of December. We will continually

re-assess, and with luck our county may move again into red, then orange status.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Patti Corcoran and Jack and Elaine Shaffer for pulling off a very

successful curb-side Thanksgiving. Thank you to all of the many volunteers and generous

donations provided by our members, and the community. It takes a lot of people and resources to

serve over 300 meals! Fortunately, we have never been disappointed by our members.

Don’t forget, this is a good time to start thinking about running for office next year. Fresh ideas and

new leaders are always needed, so I strongly encourage others to think seriously about running for

    office next year.

Bull Moose of the month is Doug Herman. For the brief time that we were able to start serving

breakfast again, Doug volunteered to lead the Sunday Breakfast Program, giving my wife a much

appreciated break! He’s also been a huge help most recently with workdays, Wednesday lunches,

dinners, small meals and Thanksgiving. Thank you, Doug, for all that you do, and for taking over

    Breakfast!

    Stay safe & Happy Holidays!

    Fraternally Yours,

    Damon Bortz Governor 209-890-3813

    Brothers and Co-workers,

As December rolls in, Calaveras County has taken three steps backward to the PURPLE tier. What does that mean

for our Lodge? Basically, it means we go back to meals required for any alcohol order, back to using tabs and

most importantly, no indoor dining. All meals and drinks must be served outdoors. The question that the House

Committee had to address this week is, do we try to remain open with outdoor services only? And can we

generate enough business during the cold weather to justify the costs of keep the kitchen and bar open?

We have only been squeaking by these last two months and with the expected increased spread in Covid-19 over

the holidays, we have decided to take the safer route and will remain closed for December. We will continue to

monitor the Covid impact on Calaveras County and communicate any changes in our operations to all members.

In preparing for “One Moose,” I have implanted a new email distribution system that will be able to handle the

increase of email daily capacity. Currently only LOOM members are receiving their monthly bulletins and weekly

updates with this new system. The WOTM will be added soon. More information on the One Moose transition

in 2021 will be shared in the coming months.

I want to thank Patti, Jack & Elaine, and all of the volunteers and those who donated to the Community Thanks-

giving. It was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Please stay safe and stay well, Fraternally

    Senior Regent’s Update

    Hello Moose Members and Co-workers,

Our Free Community Thanksgiving dinner was a huge success! We served 302 dinners from our curbside pick up, including about 20 deliveries. Over 40 helpers put in 243 volunteer hours over 3 days and 52 turkeys were donated as well as many generous monetary donations! What an amazing crew led by Patti Corcoran and Jack and Elaine Shaffer! Meal recipients were so incredibly thankful. One man even said this was his first Thanksgiving dinner in years. This is why we do it, to help all in our community!!

As of December 1, we have had to close the lodge due to our county changing to purple tier. Since all meals and drinks must be served outside, we will be closed until further notice. We had to cancel our upcoming Christmas dinner on December 12, so if anyone pre-paid for tickets, we will refund you. We’ve decided to hold an online silent auction for some of the raffle items that were donated for the dinner. We have some amazing items including 4 rounds of golf at Greenhorn Creek, a season pass to Bear Valley Cross Country, and 2 all-day lift tickets at Bear Valley! More details to come.

We will still hold the Santa Drive-up Kids’ Event on December 5, from 11:30 to 1:30 in front of the lodge. This will be an outdoor drive-up only event. Kids will be able to tell Santa what they want for Christmas (at a distance), and gifts will be given to all children and infants. We will also be putting together holiday family gift baskets with food for needy families in our community for Christmas. More details to come on this too.

On a sadder note, one of our original Charter members and past Senior Regent, Shirley Small, passed on November 3. She was a Women of the Moose for over 40 years. The Charter was draped in her honor at our last WOTM meeting, November 17. She will be dearly missed….

Also, on November 17, we held a Red Tassel ceremony for Melanie Kish and Diane Freier, who participated via Zoom from Idaho. This honor is awarded to past Senior Regents earning the Award of Achievement. Congratulations, ladies! Well deserved!

The Co-Worker of the month is Melanie Kish! She worked on a program for EA Family Services in San Andreas, which provides foster and youth programs. Melanie collected and delivered new and like-new suitcases for foster kids in the area. She is also coordinating the Santa drive-up event on December 5.

    Congratulations, Melanie!

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful Holiday Season!!!

    Fraternally Yours,

    Laurie Ahlberg

    In Memory of Shirley Small

    January 1, 1943 – November 3, 2020

Shirley (York) Small passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, at her home in White Pines

surrounded by her family. She was 77 years old. She met her husband, Joe Small, and moved to the

Arnold area in 1964; they later moved to White Pines where their family resided for over 49 years.

Shirley was one of the original Charter Members of Ebbetts Pass Women of the Moose #1714 in

1970, and worked her way up the ranks until she was Senior Regent and finally achieved her Red

Stole, the highest degree you can hold. Shirley enjoyed reading, crocheting, traveling, visiting and

helping her friends. Spending time with her family and friends was her greatest joy. A celebration of

life and love in Shirley’s honor was held on Saturday, November 14 in Copello Park, Angels Camp.

Anyone wishing to donate in Shirley Small’s memory can send a

contribution to VUSD/Linebaugh Park, P.O. Box #329, Avery, CA 95224.
