    From the publisherDear Readers,

I am very excited to have Fabi Preslar as ourcover story this month!

I first met Fabi at an e-women event when Women With Know How was just starting up.

At that point, I was new and on a very tight budget to work with her.

Last February, we launched our first issue of the emagazine.

As many of you know, the content was wonderful, but the layout and graphics needed a lot of help.

Fabi reached out to me and offered her services- at a reduced rate for a limited time - to take

the magazine to the next level and generate advertising to support all costs of production.

I have to admit, I was a little scared of thisinvestment, but it was so worth it. (Now we need

all of you who love this magazine to advertise!)

You all can see that SPARK Publications creative team has created what I think is an award winningpublication.

Thank you to the SPARK Publications team!

Our professional spotlight this month is Debbie Winchester of Debbie Winchester Designs, a woman who makes gorgeous jewelry!

Last but not least, our online store is nowopen for business.

    Have a great March!

When you weregrowing up, whatcareer path did you

want to pursue? Ive always loved animals,

so I wanted to be a veterinarian.

What is the bestaccessory or flagshippiece of jewelry

    you suggest womeninvest in?

A woman should choose jewelry that reflects herindividual style. It is not

for me to say what makesher feel confident or

well adorned. My task is to create jewelry that is aesthetically pleasing, wellconstructed and timeless.

    What got you starteddoing custom

designed jewelry? The seed was planted whenI was nine years old andI saw an onyx and silver

ring my cousin made inher metalsmithing class incollege. The bug bit againnine years ago when I wasdiscussing jewelry with a

friend who was learning to make beaded jewelry. I went to a local bead storeon my lunch hour thatday and was completelyhooked. I have continued

to learn new techniques such as wire wrapping, hammering, texturing, coldconnection, fold forming and

    silversmithing.

What do you think it takes to be a Woman With Know How?It definitely takesdetermination and theunwillingness at times to

take no for an answer. It takes planning andcommitment, too, and focus

on the desired end result. You are a native of the Charlotte Metro Area What is thebest change you haveseen come to the areain the last 20 years? I think there has been a

shift away from the big boxretailers to more eclectic

style boutiques. The smaller, more personal boutiques arebetter venues for artisanslike me to sell their creations.

How would you like to see your businessprogress through

2010 and beyond? What are your dreamsfor Debbie WinchesterDesigns?I currently have my jewelryline in three upscalelocations. By the end of2010, I would like to at leastdouble that. My dream is to

be able to stay in my studio to make jewelry and havebusinesses coming to me toplace orders.

What motto do you live your life by?I just try to treat others the

way I want to be treated.

    We all have a cause

that we stand behindand that pulls at ourheart strings Whatis yours?

Animal welfare. I believein advocating for those

without a voice. Pets giveunconditional love and

deserve to be well cared for and loved in return. The petpopulation in this country isout of control. Thousandsof animals are euthanizedin shelters every year for noreason other than that thereis no home for them. Propercare of pets includes, butis not limited to, spaying orneutering, regular healthcare, including dental,

vaccinations, proper housing and containment, exercise, proper nutrition, toys andlots of love.

The decision to get a pet should be given carefulconsideration and should be

a lifetime commitment. I alsoencourage everyone to berespectful of our wildlife. Asour population grows and

we move into their habitat, itis extremely important that

we do our best to coexist.Provide structures for birds to nest in and choose plants for landscaping that provide food and cover. All animals were put on this earth for areason, so do not destroy

them because you fear themor because you think they

    are a nuisance.

    How are you Distinguishing

    YourselfFrom Other

    Job Search Candidates

Learn to Stand Out in the Job

    Searching Crowd

  • 8/14/2019 Eating and Living WELL

    7/38

What can a Job Search Candidate possibly dodifferently from all thehundreds of others? There

are still some things that the lazy job seeker is notdoing, which can help you

    to stand out.

Its okay to send resumesout, but BE SELECTIVE.

Choose companies that are more likely to have the type of position and the salary youd want. However,be prepared as manycompanies have cut orreduced salaries over thepast year or so.

When contacting acompany, be sure you are

talking with the right person- the decision-maker. Anddont send anything toDear Sir or Madam! That

is the death sentence for aresume.

Thorough ResearchResearch your selectedcompanies and know whatis currently going on with

them. Even if they are on a hiring freeze, recognize that fact when contacting them. Relay to the company

that you want to share yourresume with them for futureopportunities. Then stay in

    touch now and then.

If you are an executive levelprofessional, be familiar

with a new job search toolcalled a Portfolio. This

job search tool is veryeffective for those people

who have lots of extensive work experience and havemultiple accomplishments

that need to be relayedmore effectively. ThePortfolio does NOT take

the place of a resume, but it enhances theresume, making it come

to life! Compass CareerManagement Solutions isone of a few companies

that provide portfolios toexecutive level job searchcandidates.

    Communicate inDifferent Ways

Job Search Candidatesneed to seek out ways

to stand out from othercandidates. Use multiplecommunication venues.Dont always call your

company contact, butinstead use email, as well as the U.S. Mail, etc. Even apersonal delivery will help

    to distinguish you.

Dont forget to ask around for others who might havecontacts within the targetedcompany. A personalcontact or referral can make

a HUGE difference. An EmployerFriendly Resume

Though a resume wont get you a job, be assured that your resume CAN make a difference. For instance,is your resume employer

friendly? Does it relayimmediately the kind ofinformation an employer

wants to know? Are you sure about the accuracyof your details? That canbe very important. Howreadable is your resume?

Dont forget to be accessible for employers to reach you. Check your voicemail frequently. What does your voicemail message say?Does it sound professional? Each item mentioned

impacts your total image to the employer.

Now you know some of the ways to distinguish yourself in the job market.Remember to keep this listof tools handy when youreout there searching. Andgood luck!

A friend, Yvonne, took Fabis suddenly displaced

family into her North Carolina home.

Yvonne saw potential inFabi that her parents, at

the time, had not identified. She became Fabis life-long mentor, giving her thecourage to make her dream

a reality. From her mentor,Fabi learned that whatever

she wanted to achieve and was willing to work for was possible.

At seventeen, Fabigraduated high school, borrowed her motherscar for a few days and

went to the CPCC campus two weeks prior to the summer session. During

this time, she registered for a full credit load of classes, began a work study job,

and landed a second job at the Athens Restaurant. She also took her nationalization test and became a U.S.citizen just in time to startclasses. Relays Fabi, There

was no financial support from my parents, and I hadno money to my name,

and knew no one in the area. I didnt have a car and rode the city bus or walked where I needed togo. I found a place to live, put myself through college

working two to three jobs and graduated with adegree in Commercial Art.Reflecting on her journey

and accomplishments, Fabicredits CPCC for much of

her success. CPCC hashad a positive and lastingimpact on my personal andprofessional life, says Fabi. When I chose to attend

CPCC as a teen, I had noidea to what extent thecollege would shape mycharacter or future. CPCCdidnt just launch my career,it launched my life, and for

    that I am truly thankful.

A Mind for BusinessIn 1998, Fabi launchedSPARK Enterprises (nowSPARK Publications), initiallyin Mint Hill, North Carolina,

as a home-based business which has now expanded and moved to Matthews,North Carolina. As herbusiness grew, Fabi grew,

    too, from an introverted

the areas of design, technical production, management, teambuilding, and client

services. When the time was right to pursue herdream of a bricks andmortar design firm, fivebanks turned down herrequest for a loan. But once

    again, these obstacles

strengthened her resolve. According to Fabi, Itsnecessary to feel failures,

work through fear, and learn to believe in yourself. Through her dedicatedleadership, SPARK hasevolved into a thriving

    Work EthicsDo you have

Our current economy has all of us thinkingdifferently about ourselves, our world, andour connection with others. The subject of

work ethics remains an important factor. Allof us know what is right and ethicalat

least I hope we do, but how do you relate that to your working environment? And howcan that factor alone help you keep your job,

advance in your job, or make a temporary job permanent?

Do your shareA project usually entails many steps and

many people working on a particular part.

As it is with machinery, if one part is not working properly, the machine runs roughly, more slowly or even breaks. If everyonedoes their share of the work at the time it isneeded, the machinery will run smoothly

and everyone wins. Projects get done faster, products get to the market more rapidly, and the quality of the work goes through the roof.

Offer to do something that is alittle out of your comfort zone

When I was beginning my career, I had just read an article about saying yes to

  • 8/14/2019 Eating and Living WELL

    15/38

a project even if you areunsure of whether you canpull it off. The call was anoffer to me to teach a classon DOS (Disc OperatingSystem). I didnt know alot about DOS and knew Icould learn it, but was still

very fearful as to whether Icould pull it off. I grimaced

and said, Yes I can. I notonly learned a new skill, butI felt more confident in my

ability to learn somethingnew and teach it. By offering

to do something unfamiliar, you will learn a new skill andbuild self-confidence.

Do what is right You KNOW what that is. If you make a mistake, own up to it. If the company does not allow mistakes to be made, quit. This type of company

    will die without creativity and

creativity in the marketplacemeans you make mistakes. We are human after all.How many times did you

fall down before you could walk? How many formulasdid a pharmaceuticalcompany make before theycame up with a drug that

would work? Mistakes areonly worthless when you do

not make them and learn from them. One story Iveheard, possibly apocryphal,is of a worker who ownedup to his mistake to hisboss, saying that his errorcould cost the company asmuch as a million dollars.Immediately he asked if his

boss wanted him to resign. His boss answered: Icant afford to lose younow. I have a millioninvested in you.

    Receive criticismas it is intended

Constructive criticism helps you to see how you canimprove and grow from

another point of view. Twoissues are in play, though. How the person giving thecriticism delivers it and how

you perceive the advice. If someone says, You could

try to do it this way. ORIve found that if you do.

Of course if your adviser says something like You are so stupid. Why didnt you do this project this (my) way? you are certainly notinclined to take their advice.Sometimes our inner voices

are as cruel as our worstcritic. Understand what they

are saying to you from theirpoint of view. Try not to take

    it personally.Give constructivecriticism

where needed There are times when YOU are the adviser. First, if youknow your colleaguespersonality and how they

receive information, you will know how to approach them. If you are fair andnon-threatening, the person

will be more willing to listen and take action.

If guidance is needed and you dont say anything, the situation may escalate andharsher measures mayhave to be taken. Nip thingsin the bud and addressissues that are small. As

time goes on, you willknow how to approacheach person.

    Offer waysof improving

As you do your work and see that a system mightneed improving, dont be

afraid to bring suggestions to your supervisor. Again, how you approach this isimportant. Simply lay out

the concerns and beclear about a new wayof doing things, takinginto account budget and

resources. Your superior will value your thoughts in the future and remember them when review timecomes around.

So, live your ethical lifeeveryday and you will find

you will love going to work.

Live your ethical life everyday and you will find you will love going to work.

Its 6 am Monday and the alarm goes off. Youpromised yourself that this

WOULD be the week that you would start that newexercise program. You know,

the one that you KNOW willhelp you lose some weight

and start feeling healthy again with a new senseof renewed energy. Not tomention those sexy pants

youve wanted to get back into that are just aching tobe worn again. One problem,

you lost the motivation asquickly as you hit the snoozebutton. And now you have

that wonderful friend calledguilt starting to settle in

with you as you nap a littlelonger. Its OK, you say to

yourself, I will get up in just a few more minutes I justneed a little more sleep soIll have the energy I need.

And so it goes, three more snooze hits and youre right where you were before. Or are you? True, you didntget to exercise as plannedbut there is a price youvepaid adding lots of hiddenguilt. That guilt starts in on

you as soon as you get up,doesnt it? Thoughts likeI cant believe I let myself

down again and didnt do the program. What is wrong with me? I cant stick to starting anything that I saidI was going to do. And nowIm going to be tired andcranky the rest of the day. I

should have just gotten upon the first snooze. And now

Im reacting to others as ifits their fault my mood.Sound a little familiar?

We all have moments of feeling emotions that dont feel good or put us in apositive state of mind. We

are after all human andemotions (good and bad)come with the territory. Its what we DO with theemotions that create ahealthy state of mind. Have

you ever been mad and someone is trying to make you smile or laugh and you simply refuse to do so?It almost seems like more

fun to stay angry then togive in and smile. Just like aparent is to their children inhelping them work throughemotional outbursts and

feel secure again, so we have our own innerchild that also needs to

be parented to help usmove through the mood swing. Here are a few tips on how you can takecontrol of those moods

and still bounce back to the productive and positiveplace you deserve to be.

    1. Acknowledgeand accept the feeling

youre in To accept that state of mind youre in may feel like youre wallowing, but actually it allows yourmind to start working

through it when theres noresistance or defensiveness

that you are indeed feeling a certain way. This may

take a little practice, butis well worth it if you canget comfortable accepting

ALL your emotions as they arrive. Just like a parent says to young child, Its ok, sweetie that youre feeling sad tell mommy what ismaking you feel that way,

so should you allow yourinner parent to sooth you

when you are feeling anuncomfortable emotion.

    2. Be aware of thechatter in your mind

Just like a parent listens to a child when they go off with all these terrible things that flood their mind likethey dont like me or they

think Im stupid or I knowI cant do that, its also true

for us that negative thoughts will come flooding to us like a tsunami. Theres nothing wrong with it! Just know that these are misguided thoughts and will soon pass when youre ready.

    3. Give yourselfa time limit beforemoving on Any goodparent knows you cantlet an outburst continue,

which is why a time-out is

an effective parenting tool for young children to work through their emotions and think about their actions. We too as adults need togive ourselves a time outor time limit on how long

we are willing to stay in anegative mood. Try to give

yourself 10 minutes to work through it and if need be walk away from others so you have can allow yourself the space to think withoutother influencers.

    4. Share youremotions with others

All too often, when we havenegative emotions, we tend

to feel less than or afraidof what others will think of

us if they are aware that we are not perfectly happy all the time. So, we keepour emotions inside, now

with shame attached to them. Now you have twoemotions youre trying to

work through. In reality, people will make their own

assumptions of what youre feeling because they see your actions and behaviors are different. And they dontknow how to respond so

they may ignore you or get angry with you, thinking they did something to you. When you allow yourself to be open to the emotion youre feeling, it loses someof its energy that fuels thenegative thoughts. Sharingit with others also allows

them to know how best tobe around you or work with

    you in a healthy way.

    5. Use methods to

It started with the question,What would you ask one million people to do

to change the world? Thousands of ideas from

around the world came in. The ideas werent sweepingpolicy changes they

    Fifty of the best suggestions

    | T h e p r e m i e r w o m e n s b u s i n e s s r e s o u r c e g u i d e To be a smart business

owner or manager, youneed to use the right toolsin your sandbox at the

right time. Your sandboxis a metaphor for yourbusiness and includes

your current and potentialclients, employees andbusiness associates,

suppliers and alliancepartners, and mostimportantly, your own time

    and expertise.

Smart business isnt childsplay, so here are ten ways to effectively use some of the tools in your sandbox.

    1. Smartstrategic plan

The most important tool youhave is your strategic plan for

where your organization isnow, where you want it togo, and how you will get

    there in the timeframe

you want. If you haventglanced at your plan inmonths, or dont haveone, you need to createor review it. Right now.Start digging!

    2. Smart vision Creating and living amission statement in

    your business is difficult,

especially when sandtraps and sinkholes appear almost daily. Be absolutelyclear and concise about

your organizations vision and mission, so you caneffectively lead the othersin your organization tohelp achieve them.

    3. Smart financialknowledgeUnderstand your margins.Figure out what you need

to sell and how to containcosts so you can make

those margins. If you dontunderstand a balance sheetor income statement, hire abookkeeper or accountantor ask a retired financialexecutive to explain it to youin plain English. Care for anEBITDA with your coffee?

    4. Smart mix ofproducts or servicesIts the old 80/20 rule; figureout which 20% of yourproducts and services aregenerating 80% of yourrevenue, then focus yourenergy, your people and

your resources on those coreofferings. Use your shovel toreduce or eliminate the 80%of your products and services

that are generating only 20%of your revenue.

    5. Smart marketing Have at least ten (yes, ten)marketing strategies in a

three-to-six month plan that you update regularly.Strategies include publicrelations, direct mail, socialonline communications, printmaterial, marketing research,

website, blogs and more.Measure the effectiveness of

your ten marketing strategiesby finding out how yourcustomers are hearing about

your products or services and focus on the strategies that give you the most sandin your buckets.

    6.Smart selling

Identify who really is the ideal client for you, whether its because s/he has the resources tobe long-term partners, orbecause he or she paysquickly, or because Then,be proactive in selling to

those types of clients. Keep yourself top-of-mind with

these prospects by keeping them informed of industrydevelopments and updates, not just about you and

your company. If someonedoesnt buy from you, findout why he or she didnt. That

valuable information will help you create the right sales

messages and techniques for the next client you call on.

    7. Smart systems The best organizations arebuilt on smart systems,

from how the phones are answered to the way thatproducts are most efficientlyproduced and distributed.Systems and processes makeeverything you do consistent,

and that reduces costs andincreases efficiency. Building

a sandcastle is easier when you create and implement anorganized process, instead of

throwing grains of sand at thepile and hoping they stick.

    8. Smart balanceof work/lifeIts important to yourhealth, well-being and yourorganizations health and

well-being for you and your teammates to have balance.Make time every day for

family, friends, home activities, exercise, pets, travel, cooking, digging your toes in the

sand; whatever relaxes andenergizes your body, mind

    and spirit.

    9. Smart change This dynamic tool in your

sandbox defines whether you can adapt and update,or if you get stuck in the old

ways and old systems. Dontbe buried under the sand.New technologies mean that

you need to stay updatedon how your business cannot only stay competitive but

also rise above. Focus oncontinuous improvement in

your processes and systems. Ask your employees orclients what should change.

Thats a sure way to get greatimprovement ideas, free for

    the asking.

    10. Smart peopleSurround yourself withemployees and alliancepartners who are moreknowledgeable than you

and be open to learning from them. Delegate to thembecause you should onlybe doing what you do best.Focus on your sweet spotgreat at selling? Someone

smarter than you can betterhandle the day-to-day client

servicing. Great at finance?Someone smarter than you

should be knocking oncustomers doors. This is

by far the best tool in your sandbox to help you create and build your sandcastles.

sneaky little gremlin never says what he wants straightout. Oh, no, your Saboteur

will soften the blow, will try to convince you that its evilintentions are actually in

    your best interest.

Because each of us is pre- wired for certain reactions,

those reactions are theeasy ones. We dont have to

think about them, nor do wereally have to put forth anyextra effort in order to react.

We simply do it instinctively;everyone knows that lashingout is easier than reasoning

and that procrastination iseasier than taking action.

The Saboteur is that little voice in your head that tells you that its acceptable to take the easy route. Its
