And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me, Acts 1: 4

Waiting is not a favorite pastime of most human beings. It always seems as though one of the worst thins persons can say to us in any context is to wait.

The first disciples pf Jesus are told to wait for the promised comforter, the power that would come to them from on high.

Within the liturgical year we continue to move towards the end of the Easter Season with the observance next Sunday of Pentecost.

Pentecost () is a Greek word meaning "the fiftieth day." Professor Patrick Regan explains that it is used twice in the Septuagint (Tobit 2:1; 2 Maccabees 12:32) and of course in the New Testament (Acts 2:1, 20:16; 1 Corinthians 16:8) to designate a festival known in Hebrew as the feast of Harvest (Exodus 23:16) or the feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22).

Regan goes on to explain that this festival occurred seven weeks after Passover (Dt 16:10; Lv 23:15-16), that is, on "the fiftieth day."

It is clear then that Pentecost was a Jewish festival that was given new meaning by the infant Christian Church when as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, when that day had fully come the Holy Spirit came down and rested on each one of the disciples. Acts 2: 1 - 14.

The fifty day period of joy and exultation between Easter and Pentecost became split; but only in a sense, by Ascension Day. A liturgical feast about which we read coming towards the end of the 4th century.

Ascension Day is part of the joyful expectation of the coming of the Holy Spirit during which the church awaits the celebration of the holy memorial of the out pouring of the Holy Spirit.

Today therefore the collect and readings at Mass reflect that spiritual understanding as we pray that the abiding Holy Spirit continues to strengthen, guide and comfort us for the healing, teaching and compassionate ministry to which he had called us.

May Gods grace be with us and may we be empowered to bring all within our homes and all of our relatives to mass next Sunday as we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost.

CURRENT NEWS AND EVENTS ANNUAL SESSION OF SYNOD

The Annual Diocesan Synod begins this evening in the St. Michaels Cathedral with Holy Mass and the Bishops charge at 5:00pm. All are invited. the business sessions with be held on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

YOUTH EXPLOSION BAND We greet the members of The Band Youth Explosion as they begin their entry into this years Cropover festival by worshipping with us during the 10am Service today.

MOTHERS UNION EVENTS The Mothers Union Picnic will be held on Whit Monday (May 25). The venue is the King George V Park. Contribution: Adults $20:00; Children $15:00. Buses will leave the car park at 9:30 am.

The Mothers Union invites all to their concert on Sunday May 31 beginning at 4:00pm. Contribution $5:00

ANNUAL SERVERS SERVICE The annual Whit Monday Mass for all Servers across the Diocese will be held in the St. Lukes Church at 10:00am. The newly elected executive will be installed within the Service. ALL St. Davids Servers are to attend.

HEALTH CORNER by Sophia Marshall Last week we used specific herbs to spice up our meal. This week, here are more creative cooking tips to help reduce the use of fat as the only source of flavor in our food.

Start with tsp (1ml) dry herbs or tsp (3ml) fresh herbs for a dish that serves 4 people. Fresh herbs contain more moisture with milder flavor. 3 to 4 times more fresh herbs than dried herbs will be needed. Example: 1 Tbsp (15ml) fresh herbs = 1 tsp (5ml) dried herbs.

Crumble herbs between fingers to release flavor prior to adding to dish.

Heat herbs in bit of oil to heighten & extend flavor.

With soups, stews, & large quantity dishes, add herbs during last hour of cooking so flavor doesnt evaporate.

Store herbs in cool place in opaque container to retain flavor. Do not store near stove.

Routinely replace supply of herbs. Generally ground spices retain flavor for about 6 months; herbs dry out after 4 months.

Rub herb mixtures onto meats prior to cooking.

Use herbs individually first and advance to blending herbs together. In this way, you can pinpoint which particular herbs enhance the flavor to your fancy.

When using seasoning packages, try using only package as flavors are usually too concentrated, especially in salt. Remaining amount can be used for seasonings for home-made barbecue sauces or added to meats. Source, Nutrition Dimension/ContinuingEducation.com

Communion by Intinction

There is practically no reason for persons to make their communion by intinction.

This is the practice of having the communion wafer dipped in the chalice and then administered to the communicant.

Persons do so for various reasons and the church has made provision for this and allows it with the permission of the bishop.

The authorisation of the bishop is vital since it goes outside of the normal practice of receiving the bread and wine separately as outlined in Scripture

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me. 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 NASB

Each element, the bread and the consecrated wine separately, represents the fullness of the Body and Blood of Christ.

If therefore one makes ones communion in one kind e.g. under the species of bread one is not receiving part of the sacrament; but the fullness of the Christs sacred Body and Blood.

If one chooses to make ones communion by intinction one can indicate to the minister by crossing ones hands over ones shoulders.

Under no circumstances, according to our bishop should one take the host in the hand to be dipped in the chalice.

FAMILY PRAYER TIMEHoly Father, keep them in the name you gave me, so they can be united. Of all human institutions, family is synonymous with unity. As the old saying goes, Blood is thicker than water. When threatened, family members will come to the defense of each other. In good times, family members will share joy and celebration. Family members are meant to be together.

The prayer of Jesus in John 17 adds a larger dimension to family unity. When God enters the family dynamic, he creates a spiritual union. Family members are one with God and each other especially when they pray.

Create special family time for prayer this week. Or, pray a special prayer during family prayer time. This way, you can strengthen the bonds of your family with God and each other.
