A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin and insert. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice of dividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goal of worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be acommunity that understands the speci c gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the Kitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service

begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and re ect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayer or one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today we give special thanks for the Anglican Communion, the global family of churches which grew out of the English Reformation and the missionary activities the church and her members undertook, often at greatperil to themselves. Here at St. Francis we are proud to be part of the Anglican Communion, and nd hopeduring dif cult times by considering the brothers and sisters with whom we share the faith, recognizing thatin our international communion, with its many nationalities, cultures and ethnicities, we get a glimpse of

what Heaven and the Communion of Saints must be like.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

So when [the apostles] had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this timerestore the kingdom to Israel? He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasonsthat the Father has xed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea andSamaria, and to the end of the earth. And when he had said these things, as they werelooking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they weregazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said,Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken upfrom you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, aSabbath days journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas,Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judasthe son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

7 O God, when you went forth before your people, * when you marched through the wilderness,

8 The earth shook, and the skies poured down rain,at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, *at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

9 You sent a gracious rain, O God, upon your inheritance; * you refreshed the land when it was weary.

    Second Reading: 1 Peter 4:12-14;5:6-11

A Reading from the First letter of Peter.

Beloved, do not be surprised at the ery trial when it comes upon you to test you, asthough something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christssufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you areinsulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of Godrests upon you.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the propertime he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be

Resist him, rm in your faith, knowing that the same kindsof suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

[Jesus] lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come; glorify yourSon that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all esh, to giveeternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know youthe only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glori ed you on earth, havingaccomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your ownpresence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yoursthey were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know thateverything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that yougave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from

you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying forthe world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glori ed in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which youhave given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

    Hosanna in the highest.

Please stand or kneel at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your in nite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacri ce for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ tookbread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacri ce of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.

    A Note on Todays Readings

The Seventh Sunday of Easter--Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. We begin today the nal week of Easter. Last Thursday we celebrated Jesusascension to the Father and his glori cation. The Gospel reading today is a portion of the prayer he prayedon the night before his death, in which he consecrated his offering of himself to God, and prayed for us that

we might be made part of his offering. In baptism we have, in fact, received the bene ts of that prayer.

The reading from the Acts of the Apostles is the beginning of that book. Luke describes Jesus ascension andthe promise that he would shortly empower his friends with the Holy Spirit. We are told that the disciples, including Jesus mother, then spent the remaining days together in prayer waiting for that gift of the Spirit,

  • 8/14/2019 Easter 7 A

    16/16

which would come upon them on the Day of Pentecost.

In the passage from 1 Peter, we are exhorted to live lives in keeping with our vocation given in baptism. If weare to suffer, let it be for doing good, not because of wrongdoing. Such righteous suffering deepens our union

with Christ. We are already assured by Jesus Resurrection that no suffering can destroy the eternal life wehave been given.

We gather week by week to celebrate the Eucharist. The Ascension reminds us that in the Eucharist Jesusis not made present by being brought down to us; he is present because in the Eucharist we are taken up to

where he is. For a moment, we are not only in the world but we become citizens of the eternal kingdom.
