KAG: Self Advocacy

•The minutes from our last meeting in May were agreed by the group.

•There are currently 5 self advocacy groups running across Surrey, with the 6th one just about to start in Staines.

•The Hate Crime DVD was made following on from cases such as Fiona Pilkington and Francesca Hardwick in 2007. When 33 complaints had been made in 10 years between 1997-2007. Fiona Pilkington took her and her daughters life’s in 2007 when she could no longer tolerate the abuse they were subject to.

•The hate crime clips show 3 different people with different needs and different outcomes. There are also 21 mini clips which cover different topics such as poor practice.

•The DVDs will be accompanied by Easy Read resources. There have also been changes to reflect this on the Surrey Police website. The DVD can help to educate Police, Carers and support staff.

•Anne asked how long does it take for Police to come to a burgled house?

•Barry said if it is an emergency you must call 999 and they will come as quickly as possible. If it is a non emergency you must call 101.

•The group watched the Hate Crime clip about Tony, which focuses on representing someone who has a disability and also appears to be of an ethnic minority group.

•We also watched mini clips about someone being sold stuff door to door, someone being approached outside their house being told they need a new roof. Also someone who is being ignored by their Support Worker.

•There will be 1,000 copies of the DVDs which will be sent throughout Surrey to various places such as Day Centres, The Hubs and Schools and Colleges.

Short Break Services

•Barry also told the group about the involvement the advocacy groups had in the Police training event over the past 2 years called Open Doors in Woking.

•Members of the Sussex Police force attended this training and have said they would be interested in a similar resource in their area. Barry is planning to send out the DVD to commissioners across the UK.

•John Spedding said well done to the group on their hard work on the project in producing a good quality DVD.

•The DVD may be available on the internet in the future but that will require receiving permission from those involved.

•Our first presentation was by David Clegg and Royston Seecharran from Jasmine at Primrose.

•They provided a presentation which I will distribute with these minutes for full details of their service.

•Jane Packer and Lila Fraszczak from Welmede spoke to the group next. They told us that short breaks at Welmede would be funded through personal budgets.

•The property has a level access shower which can support some mobility issues.

•The new property has a downstairs bedroom which can be accessed by someone who can’t use stairs. The accommodation is based more in the West Surrey area but people from across the County are welcome to have short breaks.

Prospect •Dawn Boyce and Jamie Harris from Prospect spoke to the group about the Short Break services offered.

•Prospect offers short breaks for people aged 5-18 in Community Outreach.

•They spoke to us about the 18-30 young person service which they offer in Redhill where Prospect has a 5 bedroom property.

•The property is in a good locations for Buses and trains, and they try to access the community in as many ways as possible.

•They currently have 40 different service users and can provide 1:1 support for college and educational purposes.

•They provide leisure opportunities, and support employment opportunities. They are Person Centred and based upon the referral and advice from parents and others agencies create a support plan for staff to follow.

•The staff team run a different topic every 2 weeks such as Pirates or London. This influence in house activities and trips.

•The property has themed rooms, currently including African Safari and London Bridge.

•Prospects fundraiser Shirley has recently secured some new money from Lottery Funding.

•They are looking to run more Drama groups in the future which will be life skill based and are also negotiating a cooking program using the facilities at Warwick School.

•Amy North from County Care spoke to the group, County care was set up 5 years ago across Surrey.

•They can provide 1:1 support in the community and peoples homes.

•They have progressed to running Community skills projects based in Horley and Woking.

•They have daytime opportunities such as their ‘Bear Skills’ project, as well as coaching groups and furniture restoration.

•They can offer supported holidays which are tailor-made to the individual.

•They also run group holidays to places such as Butlins and Marwell.

•They now offer support in homes if parents are on holiday rather than supporting people in a respite centre.

•Mencap Leisure Services cover the whole of Surrey but Jim Lord who spoke to the group is based in the East in particular.

•They offer respite care for those aged 16+ and run Leisure activities at a 1:5 ratio.

•They also offer the Mencap me time framework and support evening social groups in partnership with YMCA East Surrey.

•There is a social group that runs in Oxted, activities are decided by the people who are part of the group.

•During the Football season there is a Football group which runs in Mertsham 10:00-12:00pm on Saturdays.

•The Football group are hoping to join a league in future.

•They also run a Cinema Club on the 1st Sunday of each month.

•There are also Golf groups which run from Redhill Golf Centre.

•Mencap Leisure Services run holiday schemes during ½ terms, Easter and Summer holidays. These consist of a wide range of activities such as days out to London and Brighton as well as craft activities.

•They also offer daytime activities during term times which include Racquet sports and swimming.

•The programme for the Summer scheme 2015 is due to be sent out within the next week.

Positive Behaviour Support Network

Updates from the group

• Tom Moore told us that the Positive Behaviour Support Network was launched at the conference on 12th March at Dorking Halls.

• The group have regular meetings, their next meeting is the 11th June with a talk from Maria Hurman a local expert, who works as a lecturer at the Tizard Centre and for Surrey and Borders. The talk is going to be about functional communication.

• They are meeting 1:00-3:00pm at Park House in Leatherhead, people are welcome to join the network and come.

• The Autism partnership board will meet in July. The Central Government innovation fund has given some money for an employment project. The job centre are engaged in online material on the Autism Partnership Board website.

•Rita told the group about the Live it project which is for adults aged 30+, they have regular sessions with different activities.

•The YMCA run Boccia sessions at Tescos community room at Hookwood. Surrey is going to be rolling out a Boccia programme.

•People can volunteer at YMCA East Surrey, they will be given appropriate training such as First Aid training.

•People can gain an all inclusive membership to the Gym, they will receive referral support before starting.

•People are welcome to attend Community sessions, in Redhill they are £3.50 a person. Including Trampolining on Wednesdays, you do not have to book.

•On Wednesday 8th July the YMCA East Surrey will be hosting East Surrey Valuing People groups next community event from 10:30-1:30pm at their Centre in Princes Road, Redhill. Everyone is welcome to attend, there will be Line Dancing and Curling and lunch included.

•Penny told us in their groups they’ve been talking about questions such as what they would do if they were Prime Minister. They are hoping to bring this back to the group in future as they have been filming it.

•The advocacy groups meets alternate Friday mornings from 10:30-12:00pm at St Joseph’s Church Community Centre, 122 Ladbroke Road, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 1LF.

•Lisa spoke to the group about Learning Disability week 2015. This is running from 15th to 22nd June 2015.

•The Valuing People groups in Partnership with KAG advocacy groups are launching their own ‘Hear our Voice’ campaign in Surrey. Throughout Learning Disability week and the weeks that follow they will be gathering voices and positive stories from people with Learning Disabilities.

•There are two events being held by the Valuing people groups in honour of Learning Disability Week. Tuesday 16th June at the Mayflower Centre in Dorking from 10:00-3:00pm with various speakers attending.

•Thursday 18th June at the South West Valuing People Community event, at the Ash Centre in Ash. With a speaker attending from the Houses of Parliament Outreach service.
