We are packing more events and activities into this issue than ever before! Birthday parties always feature in the May-June issue, too, with our Best Local Summer Party Venues Directory on pages 11-14, updated for this issue. The Directory provides the ideal way to have a party without worrying about the mess!

Our Holidays feature (pages 8-9) has an ‘outdoor exploring’ theme, with ideal family holidays as close as Surrey, slightly further afield in Wales and Devon and as far away as the French/Swiss borders.

Ahead of your summer holidays, our Nature Notes page and Events Calendar offer some great outings for both the early and late May Bank Holidays – see pages 18-22.

Families Surrey East will have a lovely new editor from the September-October issue. We’ll bring you more news in the next issue – but in the meanwhile we are all really excited and working towards a smooth transition.Eleanor Lines, Editor

Transforming RedhillLooking forward 18 months, a larger Sainsbury’s store will welcome shoppers at the top of London Road, while a multistorey car park,

Travelodge hotel, state-of-the-art gym and renovated entrance to the Harlequin theatre and library will

complete the area’s new look and provide hundreds of new jobs.

Polesden’s World RecordPolesden Lacey, near Dorking, has received official confirmation from Guinness World Records that it holds the world record for the most people to roll down a hill in one hour! The event took place last July on the slopes of the beautiful Polesden Lacey estate, with hill rollers from as young as 5 yrs old, plus an unofficial rolling event for younger children who couldn’t resist taking part.

Hill rolling is one of the National Trust’s ‘50 things to do before you are 11 ¾’, a campaign originally launched in response to the Natural Childhood report, which highlighted evidence of a long-term and dramatic decline in children’s relationship with the outdoors.

New before-school club coming to Reigate in September! Reigate parents can now sign up to a new before-school club for 4-11 year olds (reception to year 6). Reigate Breakfast Club is located near the station and run by experienced staff. Serving Holmesdale and Priory, the club

will provide a healthy breakfast and walk children to school. Care (from 7am-drop off) costs £10/day per child. Setting up the club, local mum Georgina Hardy says: “Parents can bring their children somewhere safe and fun – making mornings easier.”

Love Maths?Maths Masters is just six months old and already has made lasting changes to the mathematical ability of 5-11yr olds in the Redhill and Tadworth districts.

Launched in October 2014, Maths Masters after-school coaching sessions were the brainchild of Louise Playford and Emma Kitto, helping local children improve their arithmetic and numeracy. Many of the children have now moved up class sets and national curriculum levels. All have grown in confidence.

The practice exercises, incentivised rote learning and expert tutoring increase children’s enjoyment of maths “This is my favourite club “ wrote one young student in his Christmas card to his tutors; “ I really love maths’” expressed another, in fact getting the children to leave at the end of their session is the tricky part. A good result from Maths Masters!

Maths Masters coaching sessions are at St Joseph’s Church, Redhill and Lower Kingswood Village Hall, Buckland Rd, 3.30-6.30pm in term time and holidays. A 25% discount applies to all sibling registrations. There are dedicated SATS sessions for children in years 5 & 6.

Magna Carta celebrations To mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede (15 June 1215), the National Trust and Surrey County Council, working in partnership with the Houses of Parliament, are asking the nation to take a moment to celebrate and reflect on their liberties by hosting a LiberTeas event on Sunday 14th June at 3pm.

Over the past 800 years countless people have made the difference to the way we live our lives today in United Kingdom. Some were politicians but many others were not. Through LiberTeas the nation can pause to remember all those people – since 1215 – whose passion and dedication have fostered the liberties that we enjoy today. Foot problems can arise from inactivity. Inactive children are more likely to have weak muscles in their feet, less coordination and poorer balance. This can lead to alteration of the foot shape, flatter feet and consequently the risk is higher for injuries when they get older.

Ill-fitting shoes can cause a child’s foot to become misshapen, altering how it can function mechanically. Shoes must provide the best support and stimulation to growing children. Eve Davies, Start-rite Brand Director suggests that parents go to their new website, www.healthylittlefeet.com for information and advice on what to look for when buying shoes and the importance of healthy foot development. Services include a ‘Ready for Shoes’ checker, alongside information, videos and animations to reassure and educate parents.

First ShoesIt is estimated that 70 per cent of adult foot problems come from wearing the wrong footwear, with the majority caused by ill-fitting footwear worn as a child.

Leading Biomechanics Coach and Chartered Physiotherapist, Martin Haines, explains: “The foot is part of an integrated system. It will both influence and be influenced by the structure and function of the body above it. The connective tissue in a child’s foot will reach adult levels of stability by the age of 15 and a child’s gait may not mature till the age of 13, so during school age, children need effective stimuli to help muscles and bones develop healthily. The wrong footwear in primary aged children can have a huge effect on healthy development.”

The rise in allergies in the UK over the past 50 years is thought to be linked to the reduced exposure to bacteria in daily life. A recent trial at Swansea Medical School suggests that beneficial probiotic bacteria may susbtantially reduce the risk of allergic sensitization and atopic eczema.

The root of most ‘type 1‘ hypersensitivity comes from allergic sensitization which occurs in the first two years of life – with the first six months being particularly critical.

Allergic sensitization will first express itself as eczema and then manifest as asthma from about 5 years and rhinitis from about 8 years onwards. This progression of changing expression of sensitization over the childhood period has been termed the ‘allergic or atopic march’. If an infant is diagnosed with atopic eczema within the first 2 years of life they stand up to 80% chance of this progressing to asthma by the age of 12.

Antibiotic use is linked with a shift in gut bacteria (‘microbiota’) and the incidence of allergic disorders. What is more, increased cleanliness, urbanization, reduced family size and decreased incidence of childhood infections have culminated in substantially lowering our exposure to the ‘microbial world’, which plays a vital role in the maturation of our immune systems during the first years of our life.

One of the potential solutions is exposure to probiotic bacteria to stimulate the immune system and ‘train’ it to produce an appropriate response to allergens. A recent trial at The College of Medicine at Swansea tested the effects of probiotics on pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

The outcome was striking in that it found those receiving the probiotic reduced their chance of becoming sensitized by half (50%). Moreover, the risk of the children developing atopic eczema was reduced by nearly 60%.

The value of probiotics may go beyond allergies and find a role in the prevention and treatment of some gut disorders and in strengthening the immune system. Large pharmaceutical and food companies are beginning to conduct more research to understand better the role of probiotics and how to make sure the right probiotic is given in the right circumstances to maximise the health effects.

The Swansea trial is published in the Archives of Childhood Disease: Allen S.J et al Probiotics in the Prevention of eczema: a Randomised Controlled Trial Arch Dis Child (2014). Thanks to ProVen Probiotics for supplying this research. www.provenprobiotcs.co.uk

Probiotics and allergies

What are probiotics?Probiotics are microrganisms, such as bacteria or yeast, which can be found in some food, and are believed to play an important role in regulating intestinal function and digestion by balancing the intestinal micro-flora.

8 Families Surrey East May-June 2015

Starry Skies is a camp site for just 250 families and is booking up fast. At its heart is an organic restaurant, a cinema, bar and camp shop with local produce and a Giant Teepee with organised activities and live entertainment including music. There are workshops for adults, too.

Sidhartha Sharma, festival director, says: Starry Skies is a new hybrid. It’s a type of holiday somewhere between a festival and a camping trip. It’s all about exploring the surroundings; climbing trees, building dens, fishing in streams, going on woodland adventures with your next‐tent‐neighbours! The things we took for granted when we were kids but which are increasingly rare now.”

The price for camping 22nd-26th July and all the facilities is £139 for adults and £29-£39 for children. Extra for choosing a boutique camping yurt or bell tent.

Another family-focussed camping week, this time in Devon and offering yurts for all, has the theme ‘Growing the Grown Ups’ with opportunities for looking deeper into ourselves as parents and carers.

The camp takes place on a 50-acre site in a peaceful Devon valley between Exeter and Dartmoor, with full access to a lake for swimming in, woodlands for playing in, extensive organic gardens and open fields. Full childcare is provided by qualified carers so that you can attend the optional parenting sessions knowing your children are safe and having fun!

The camp takes place during May half term, from Sunday, 24th until Friday, 29th May 2015. The price is £325 per person inclusive of all meals, facilitated sessions, childcare and accommodation.

If yurts and tents aren’t your thing, there are some great holidays for families in beautiful locations that represent great value and provide led activities. The Field Studies Council (FSC) and the Youth Hostelling Association (YHA) both offer budget holidays for families in some very special places plus a range of activities and learning programmes.

The YHA, established in 1930, was created to offer young people new experiences of adventure and discovery. Now also geared towards families, with their own accommodation and a range of activities on offer, it’s well worth exploring their website and checking some of their beautifully situated hostels, many of which have received superb refurbishments in the past few years.

Family life seems to get busier and busier. Whether one or both parents are working, the school-term routine rarely allows for much family time. Holidays often become a rush to travel abroad to find relaxation in the sun. But sometimes, after such a busy year, families need to find a way to re-engage with each other again.

There are some lovely holidays on offer that are specifically designed with families in mind, which offer parents and children fun, relaxation, new friends and activities and which help families celebrate their lives together whilst allowing each member to pursue their own interests.

We’ve been particularly impressed with the Starry Skies Family Camp, which takes place in Herefordshire on a country estate near the Welsh borders and close to the beautiful Brecon Beacons, for just one week, 22-26 July.

Now in its third year, Starry Skies provides a beautiful setting and a huge range activities for families to reconnect with the great outdoors. With a working farm, miles of rolling meadows, rivers and streams, ancient woodland, mountains and hills to explore, it’s the perfect place for a Famous Five style adventure! Children of all ages (the majority are 3-8yr olds) can take part in something and adults can relax knowing their kids are in safe hands.

New for 2015, kids can learn about stars and the moon in The Planetarium or become a Nature Warrior and join The Woodland Tribe, helping create an adventure playground in the woods under expert guidance.

The FSC’s ‘Real Family Holidays’, launched in 2014, have recently won a Times award as one of their ’20 best family adventures for 2015’, putting them at the top of the list for holidays under £500. This environmental charity designs ways to help families experience nature at an affordable price. With 11 UK locations and a standard price of £20pp / night, even during the school holidays, and a range of family courses, it’s worth visiting their website to find out more.

Locally, Juniper Hall, on the edge of the Box Hill Estate nr Dorking, is one of the FSC locations. Between 4-16 August this year there are free activities such as shelter building and looking at the wildlife in streams

on offer there.

For a family adventure further afield, the Alps must be one of the best kept secrets in travel. Francesca and Paul Eyre have been operating mountain activity holidays at Chilly Powder, near Morzine, since 1995: skiing by winter and a whole range of activities on offer during the summer months. Their catered chalet service and

three self-catered chalets provide families with a range of sports and activities and a high level of care. There is flexibility for parents to take part in outdoor activities with their children or, if parents wish to try some of the more extreme sports, there is a crèche and kid’s club for half or full days. Cyclists can enjoy a 80km loop, using 15 ski lifts as part of the journey.

Chilly Powder’s location just outside Morzine close to the Swiss border is perfect: the tranquil area of Les Prodains means that children can play safely, away from the busy roads in acres of meadow and lawn right on the doorstep. An enormous advantage of staying in the Morzine area is the summer ‘Multi-Pass’, available from 13th June until 6th September and costing just 2 euros per day. The pass allows free travel on all ski lifts and free access to many local sporting facilities.

Petite Ecole de Reigate, the French Saturday School, is marking its first anniversary in May with a visit from Yves Letournel, Minister for Cultural Services at the French Embassy.

Manal Leach, of Petite Ecole, said “As two bilingual parents, we were really keen to open the school for our children and other families in the area. We began with 15 children in two classes and a team of 4 and, one year on, we have around 50 children, from age 3 to 10 years, five classes and a team of 10.”

The anniversary celebration takes place at Holmesdale School, Holmesdale Road,

Reigate on Saturday, 16 May at 4pm. Existing or prospective Petite Ecole families are invited to join in the celebrations.

Manal Leach and Pascale Sidall are co-founders of Petite Ecole, member of “Parapluie FLAM”. The Saturday school supports French families bringing up bi-lingual children. www.petite-ecole-reigate.co.uk

After an active birthday out, you might feel brave enough to offer a sleep-over. To help make the first one go smoothly, here are some tips from Sarah Barnes at Gentle Sleep Solutions:- 1. Invite only a small group first time round.2. Discuss allergies, medication, comfort objects or other needs with parents of invited children.3. Keep contact numbers for all parents in case of late night homesickness.4. Make a few boundaries clear: bedtime; no-go areas in the house or garden after bedtime and any rules regarding using gadgets/electronics.5. Tell your guests where you are sleeping and that they can wake you in an emergency.6. Arrange a definite pick-up time the following day eg 9-10am. Younger ones especially will be ready to go home and sleep! www.gentlesleepsolutions.co.uk

World Book Day Schools all over East Surrey and the UK celebrated World Book Day on 5th March, with authors visiting schools for workshops and storytelling. World Book Day next year will be on 3rd March 2016. The worldbookday.com website offers resources and toolkits to encourage schools to take part in the annual event.

Storyteller and songwriter Rob Parkinson at Warlingham Park School Nursery on World Book Day.

Dunottar Pupil Sings at Wembley ArenaA 12 year old student from Dunottar School in Reigate has sung before an audience of thousands at Wembley Arena.

Daisy Hunt was a main performer for the second year in a row when she entertained her audience with a performance of ‘Best day of My Life’. She also sang in the ‘Voice in a Million’ Stage Choir.

This year’s event focused on a new charity called Children United, which officially launches in September. The web-based communication platform connects children from all over the world, sharing cultures and enabling them to discuss the stories that matter most to them.

Farlington School invests in sportsFarlington School, 20 minutes from Gatwick, offers scholarships to students from Year 7 to the lower sixth in a wide range of sports. Sports scholars are chosen for their physical abilities and potential as well as their mental attitude.

All sports are considered, not just those taught at Farlington. Current scholars include a top 50 women’s epee fencer, junior members of the Sussex Hockey squad, a top endurance rider, county swimmers, a badminton champion and the number one under-17 pole vaulter.

Pupil Premium for schools to add support for adopted childrenAdoption UK revealed that adopted children are falling behind their classmates at school because they are not properly understood. Half (51%) of adopted children failed to hit educational targets at junior schools in 2013, an Adoption UK survey of its membership found.Pupil Premium, which is £1,900 per eligible child, per year, provides schools in England with additional funding to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children and close the gap with their classmates. The funding is available to all children adopted from care in England and is paid to schools in respect of children from Reception to Year 11. Hugh Thornbery, Chief Executive of Adoption UK, said: “Eighty per cent of adoptive parents told us their child needs more support than their classmates so we have persistently campaigned for additional support to be available to all adopted children in school in the UK.”Adoption UK is encouraging adoptive parents to find out how the funding is being spent by their school and to understand how the money is benefiting their own child.

Children help adults join in the digital ageNearly two thirds of parents feel that the rate at which technology is developing is widening the generation gap and changing the way their children communicate with them.

Parents, kids and schools can now access free games and activities that encourage kids and their families to share fun technology together - inside the classroom and while at home. The initiative is supported by the Vodafone Foundation and co-created with the Parent Zone.

Vodaphone has launched ‘My Tech Family’ to help 17,000 primary schools in the UK engage parents in the new computing curriculum and encourage families to share digital activities.

Nature needs homes in private gardensGardens offer a larger total area for wildlife than our nature reserves, yet less is known about the wildlife in it. The RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch in 2015 is helping change that. More people took part in 2015 than ever before, revealing that the top three most common birds in Surrey gardens are bluetits, then woodpigeons and blackbirds. The next most common, house sparrows and starlings, are categorized as being of the ‘highest conservation priority’ showing just how valuable our back gardens can be! Free advice on giving nature a home can be found at rspb.org.uk/homes
