Guide Dogs Are a Gift of Independencefor the Sight-Impaired

Please Help Us Raise Funds for the 2015 Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon

By Kim Thomas

When my friend Stacey Cataldoasked me to join her team for the2015 Southeastern Guide DogsWalkathon in St. Petersburg on Feb.28, it was an instant yes! I know whata huge impact a guide dog makes forits owner and we are shamelessly ask-ing for donations! Stacey and I metabout 14 years ago and there isn’tmuch that can stop this gal from beingfiercely independent – not even beinglegally blind. With her guide dogBravo to assist her, Stacey will catch acab to the airport and fly across thecountry to meet her fiancé, shop forher family, or meet up with friends. She even runs with her guide dog.

These amazing dogs give the giftof independence and freedom to thesight-impaired. Stacey lost her sightduring pregnancy at the age of 23from diabetic retinopathy, but her in-dependent nature did not disappear

with her sight and that is why thesedogs are so vitally important to thesight-impaired. It is their guide dogsthat are truly their best friends, con-stant companions, safe keepers andtheir greatest means of independence.

Southeastern Guide Dogs breeds, raises, and trains smart and loyal guidedogs and provides them at no chargeto people who need them. The schoolreceives no government funding, sothey’re counting on us to supporthealthy puppies and on-campus train-ing for visually impaired students. TheWalkathons are the biggest fundraiserof Southeastern Guide Dogs.

Stacey has had two amazingly in-tuitive and devoted guide dogs fromSoutheastern, Discovery and Bravo.Bravo came into the family to retireDiscovery (who lived out his life beingdoted on by Stacey and her family)and now it is Bravo’s turn to retire andtake it easy, as he is getting too old tokeep up with the diligent job of guid-

ing a sight-impaired human. Stacey isin the process of getting a new guidedog, and as her friend, I know a littleabout how much training and caregoes into these dogs and how theirtrainers really strive to match the rightdog to the right person. This is a verydeserving organization and we arehappy to be able to participate in thisyear’s Walkathon.

Please support our team as wesupport Southeastern Guide Dogs. It’seasy, just log on toguidedogswalkathon.org/stacey tojoin us at the event (yes, you can walkwith us!) or to donate any amount andhelp us reach our goal of $5,000.

For more information on South-eastern Guide Dogs, or to start yourown team at one of the Walkathonstaking place in different cities in theTampa Bay Area from Feb. 21 – Apr.18, visit guidedogs.org or guide-dogswalkathon.org.

By Kim Thomas

How many times have you comehome to an unexpected problem?During my nearly thirty years of beinga homeowner, I’ve come home to anumber of bad surprises – you proba-bly have experienced some of theseyourself – running toilets, leakingpipes, a leaking washing machine, downed limbs, broken A/C and adead refrigerator. As homeowners, weknow these things happen. So, whatcan you do to protect your beautifulhome when you will be away? If youtravel often or for extended periods oftime, or if Florida is your part-timehome and you will be leaving in thespring, then you should know moreabout the excellent, personalized serv-ices provided by Home Services, etc.If you’ve ever had to leave your homeor condominium for an extended pe-riod, then you know the worry of notbeing on-hand to check on things per-sonally, and with an empty house, a lotof things can go wrong. Nothing will

give you peace of mind like knowingyour home is being looked after byRichard Snyder, the owner and opera-tor of Home Services, etc. in PalmHarbor.

I had the chance to meet Richard, and it is clear that he is capable andwilling to handle home emergencies. There is a lot more involved in keep-ing your home safe and attended tothan just having a neighbor pick upyour mail and driveway papers. Youneed a responsible party who canstand in your place to handle emer-gencies and ensure that your invest-ment is protected. Richard shared justa few incidences that he has handledfor clients: a burglary where he metthe police at his client’s home, adowned tree, and an A/C unit in anattic that leaked into the ceiling. Ofcourse, meeting and waiting on repair-men, and meeting deliverymen arecommon tasks for Home Services, etc.Recently, upon finding that a refrigera-tor in a client’s home needed a repair,Richard handled the entire affair from

pricing the repair to measuring the di-mensions for a new refrigerator whenthe owner decided to replace ratherthan repair. And when the new refrig-erator was delivered with a big dent,Richard was there to refuse deliveryand insist the company redeliver whathis client ordered – a new refrigeratorin new condition.

A 36-year resident of the area,Richard and his wife, who teachesschool locally, raised their sons here.Realizing a need, Richard startedHome Services, etc. in 2009 to pro-vide the Tampa Bay area with a homeservice that caters to winter residents, business travelers and people who goon extended vacations.

Home Services, etc. offers weekly, biweekly or monthly visits, and everysingle visit is documented with digitalphotographs that are emailed to thehomeowner on the same day of thevisit – every visit. There is a very im-portant reason for this. Richard ex-plains, “Florida law says that if youleave your house empty for six weeks

or longer, that house is considered va-cant or abandoned, and in the case oftheft or damage, your insurance maynot have to pay any claims you have. That is why I provide three ways toprove that a house isn’t abandoned. There is a reason for those pictures. Iam the eyes and ears for the home-owner.”

Home Services, etc. is Your Answer to Peace of Mindat Home When You Can’t Be There

duce or eliminate taxes on not only so-cial security income, but their overalltaxes as well,” says Ed Rizzotto. “Amajor concern today and what I be-lieve will be a concern for years tocome for pre-retirees and current re-tirees is how to obtain “GuaranteedIncome for Life” from your retire-ment and non-retirement plans. Un-fortunately many employer sponsoredplans do not offer this benefit whenyou retire. We will show you how toput some things in place now that willenable you to set up lifetime incomedown the road. This is income youwill never outlive…similar to a pen-sion. We spend many hours with ourclients to put sound plans in place bysharing ‘real time’ tax, income and so-cial security analysis through some ofthe most sophisticated software. Wewant our clients to leave our officewith a better understanding on whattheir income needs will be in retire-ment, and how to control, reduce orpossibly eliminate taxes.”

start saving for retirement,” says Riz-zotto. “We have found that many peo-ple we meet who are still working havechanged jobs about every five to sevenyears, and many of those people lefttheir retirement plans at their old em-ployers (i.e. 401k, 403b, and 457plans, etc). Many of these plans can berolled over to individual IRAs or RothIRAs, thus giving the client more con-trol and the ability to have someone toadvise them. We feel it is imperativefor those people ages 59 -1/2 or olderwho are still employed to become ed-ucated on a very significant act signedinto law by congress over eight yearsago that changed the rules governingIRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s and 457 plans, what their options are and what theycan do to prepare for their family’s fi-nancial future.”

Today, Taso takes his knowledgeof the craft, his impeccable timing, the best quality ingredients andfreshest foods (many of which arefrom local farms and fisherman), andcombines that with some of his ownfamily’s recipes! And, wham, you’vegot “All the Best,” which just hap-pens to be the catch phrase on themenu! Let me rephrase that, and ex-plain: There are four menus, an EarlyBird, a Dinner menu, a Cateringmenu, and a separate and altogetherequal Pizza menu that includesStromboli and Calzones! Each of themenus are jam-packed with tastydishes that make it hard to choose, which is why so many people comeback on such a regular basis.

Michael, who works at nearbyLeo’s Barber Shop, comes in all thetime. He says, “My favorite is theChicken Francese and the Spinach &Artichoke Rangoon!” But, askaround, and you’ll find that everyonehas a different “favorite,” from theGrandma Pie to the Rack of Lamb.

“All the Best” from the Land, theSea & the Sky!

Taso humbly explains that his suc-cess is only because of the passionateand caring staff behind him, whichconsists of his better half Sabrina, kitchen manager Keith Komarek, souschef Jim Ketzner, pizza chef “Patrick-The-Pizza-Guy,” front of the housemanager Jen and all of their greatservers. Taso has created a restaurantexperience that has people just ravingabout the place. Add the full liquor barand the live music on Friday and Satur-day nights, and this place is reallycooking.

Kathy and Paul Bullara of LandO’Lakes proudly call themselves regu-lars. Kathy said, “We love how Taso al-ways comes around and announces,‘We’ve got the best food from theland, the sea and the sky!’ That’s be-cause he had quail on the menutoday!” She added, “You’ve got to trythe Fish in Filo, it’s my favorite! Onetime I came and they were out of it, sonow I call ahead to make sure theysave me some!” The Fish in Filo isTaso’s father’s creation, and one thatreally goes fast. Similar to a GreekSpanakopita, but with fresh fish fromthe Gulf, the dish is heavenly.

Paul said, “The food is phenome-nal. We love the service and the atten-tion, and Taso comes out to talk toyou! It’s great!” He adds, “Oh andyou’ve gotta get the white pizza!”

Kathy also said, “We have broughtat least ten couples to this restaurantbecause we like it so much, and on topof that we have Taso cater our Christ-mas Eve dinner for my husband’s Ital-

ian family!” You can’t quite get a bet-ter recommendation than that!

When you have a calling to be arestaurant owner, like Taso does, it’snot surprising that every little detail isimportant! It’s more than a business,it’s more than a restaurant, it’s alifestyle for Taso and his staff! So, withthat in mind, Taso spends a lot of timeseeking out quality ingredients to put

in his food. Taso’s passion for fishingand hunting is why he has so manylocal fishermen for friends, who pro-vide him their daily catch. He visits thelocal fruit and veggie stands, and liveson a small farm himself. It’s this com-mitment to fresh, quality ingredientsthat helps make the food so delicious.Add his many years of experience, andthe food just melts in your mouth.

Taso extends his high standardsto his kitchen, and having seen hiskitchen on a busy Friday night, his ex-pectations on how a restaurant shouldbe kept is perfection. Let me tell you,it’s not every restaurant owner thatknows his kitchen is spot-on at everygiven moment.

All the Best from the land, the sea

and the sky is a common theme atTaso Italiano, and that’s because youcan have your favorite foods prepareda myriad of ways, so if you like havingchicken or veal prepared more than ahalf a dozen ways, and don’t want totravel to Tampa to get a beautifulsteak, you may have found your newfavorite spot! What do you get when you com-bine homemade Italian sauce, mouth-watering meatballs, handmade pastademonstrations, cannoli and zeppolesdusted with sugar, pizzelle-makingdemonstrations, Italian entertainment, music and dancing, bocce courts, andthousands of excited guests? You getLIADO’s 12th Annual San GennaroFesta in Safety Harbor! This will markthe 12th year that the remarkableladies of LIADO (“Le Italo-AmericaneDi Oggi” or “The Italian-AmericanWomen of Today”) have put on theAnnual San Gennaro Festa, so markyour calendars for Saturday and Sun-day the 21st and 22nd of February, grab your closest friends and your ap-petite, and “andiamo!”

LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa isheld every year down at the SafetyHarbor Marina, which is right next tothe Safety Harbor Spa, making thislively street fair convenient to the en-tire Bay Area. The San Gennaro Festais quite a big deal; in fact, people travelfrom all over Florida and beyond tocome to this incredible and excitingevent.

Here’s a little history for you. San

Gennaro (or Saint Januarius) is the pa-tron saint of Naples, Italy, so it makessense that the original Feast of SanGennaro would take place there! When Italians settled in the UnitedStates they wanted to continue to cele-brate the saint’s feast day, and so theFeast of San Gennaro has taken placeeach year in Little Italy, New Yorksince 1926. Part street fair, part familyreunion, The Feast of San Gennarogrew in popularity and now more thana million people gather there each yearas a way to celebrate their shared Ital-ian heritage, culture, and of courseculinary superiority, I mean expertise.

From Little Italy to Safety Harbor,LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa has thesame goal: To share and celebrate theirItalian Heritage with the world. Cele-brating in Florida in February to avoidthat pesky hurricane season, LIADO’sSan Gennaro Festa draws quite acrowd and is a wonder to behold.

All for a Great Cause!LIADO’s San Gennaro Festa is

actually a fundraiser that goes to sup-port a great many local causes includ-ing The Alzheimer’s Association ofFlorida (Gulf Coast Chapter), AutismSpeaks, Children’s Cancer Center,Children’s Cancer Research Group @USF, The Safety Harbor Public Li-brary, and many more. Additionally, through their scholarship program,LIADO has awarded more than$110,000 to deserving students whoare dedicated to furthering their edu-cation.

You Had Me At Meatballs!Let’s be honest, there’s nothing

quite like Italian cooking, and when itcomes to meatballs, nobody does itbetter. I’m sure you make a decentmeatball, but last year, the meatballs atLIADO’s San Gennaro Festa were sogood, that they sold out of thousandsof them in the first day. That’s whatI’m talking about. I’m talking aboutmeatballs worth waiting in line for,and I’m telling you, they’re makingeven more this year.

Of course, this year’s Festa willoffer a plethora of other Italian cuisinefrom Italian sausage and peppers tohomemade pasta fagioli, not to men-tion the desserts – from cannoli tozeppoles (those are Italian dough-nuts!). If you’re so inclined, you caneven participate in one of the meatballor cannoli eating contests!

There will also be live entertain-ment throughout the Festa! The Im-pacs will keep everyone on their feet, and Joey Dee will perform live onSunday! Entertainment is definitelypart of the Italian culture, and sponta-neous dancing has been known to
