The ToyMakers of East Lake arehard at work all year round, makingbeautiful toys for children by hand.Their goal is simple. To bring joy to achild, to see a smile spread across thatlittle face, little pudgy hands graspingthe wheels and watching them turn. They want to see older children racetheir car across the floor, or turn theirtherapy lesson into a game. Their onlygoal is to make a child happy, if onlymomentarily, while they’re at thehospital, or at a shelter, and to remindthem that everything is going to beokay. That’s what children need toknow when they’re going througha scary time, and these volunteershelp to create these moments, one“Batmobile” or “Daisy Car” at a time.

Using materials that have beendonated by volunteers, local compa-nies, national companies and seem-ingly from heaven above, theToyMakers of East Lake have deliv-ered thousands of toys to children allover the Tampa Bay Area, and be-

yond. They deliver to AllChildren’s Hospital, TampaGeneral Hospital, Shand’sHospital in Gainesville,Shriner’s Hospital inTampa, Ronald McDonaldHouses and more. This isthe real deal, folks.

Each toy is lovinglyhandcrafted by men andwomen who donate theirtalent and their time tomake a toy that is almost asunique as the child who willreceive it. Each car (or planeor animal) takes a minimumof an hour to make, andpasses through a dozen helpful handsin the process before it is cleaned andbagged for delivery.

ToyMakers’ president, BobHelms, says, “Two of our most tal-ented volunteers, Wayne Gable andhis friend, Caroline, have teamed upto make some very cool toys, like Indycars. They also make animated ducksand penguins as well as toy trucks thatdouble as a business card holder.

While most of our hand-made, handpainted toys take over an hour tocomplete, it is the love and care thatgoes into each one that makes themspecial. At some level we believe thekids sense this and appreciate gettingsomething truly unique.”

Every inch of every toy is specifi-cally designed for children in hospitalenvironments, where soft toys are notan option (because they collect

germs). Each little car is treated withsuch care to befit little fingers, fromthe way each one is sanded to elimi-nate any rough edges, to the kindof paint the volunteers use (onlySherwin-Williams certified lead-free,of course).

As a volunteer, you can have theopportunity to go with the ToyMakersof East Lake when they are deliveringtheir toys. While it’s hard to see chil-

dren in the hospital, confined to theirbeds or their wheelchairs, their littlebodies wrapped in bandages, you’ll seewhat the effect of one little toy canhave on a child. It fills your cup to thetippy-top. It’s that moment, when yousee that smile, that you are reminded:While the world may be facing itschallenges, there is still so much loveand light in the world. You can be apart of that by becoming a volunteerat ToyMakers of East Lake.

Bob says, “Due to ever increasingdemand for our hand-made toys, weare seeking volunteers who are experi-enced in woodworking or those whoare talented in detail painting.”

Becoming a Toymaker is easy! Ifyou are able to devote a little time andenergy, you can become a part of thisincredible organization. Everyone canhelp in some way. Volunteers range inage from 13 to 103, in fact, one of thevolunteers of ToyMakers is a WorldWar II Veteran named Thad Pollard, who says, “The meaning comes whenwe deliver them. To see the reaction ofthe kids.”

If you can learn how to use a saw,you can help cut out the cars! Theystart with a template; it’s a lot likewoodshop class used to be! If you canpaint, you can help give each car itsunique personality. ToyMakers of EastLake needs volunteers who can addwheels, or simply individually bag eachcar. The truth is, everyone can help.

By Dr. Wayne Adams

Often I receive phone calls fromparents with a common theme: “Mystudent has a very high GPA, takes AP,IB, or other advanced programs, andcannot score well on the SAT andACT?”

In my experience tutoring SATand ACT over the past six years, thereare three major reasons.

Reason #1: Most high school stu-dents lack key fundamentals such ashaving had phonics, grammar, “recall”vocabulary, critical thinking, and themathematics needed to do well onthese exams. Without the ability topronounce words, students avoidthem or forget the definitions quickly. Most students cannot write a topicsentence, support an argument logi-cally with reasons other than personalexperience, and often are not able tocorrectly use basic punctuation such as

commas and semicolons.Reason #2: Educational direc-

tions in most high schools do not matchwhat is required to do well on theSAT and ACT. Pre-calculus, mostgeometry, and most algebra coursespoorly prepare for these exams. Re-cently, I tutored a 7th grader who hadnot had algebra or geometry. Hisbaseline score as we started was 375.When he took the actual ACT exam,he scored very close to a 600 in math.Writing essays in high school are oftenan exercise in how long a sentence or aparagraph can be, thinking this showsacademic achievement. In fact, itshows an inability to focus thoughts,to structure a clear argument, to usetopic sentences supported by logicaland memorable sentences, and tobuild a coherent conclusion that leavesa reader wanting “more”. Yet this iswhat is required for the SAT and ACTessays.

Reason #3: Most Prep Classes inhigh school are woefully inadequate.Recently, I learned that a leading pri-vate high school used the worst SATprep book on the market today andthe students were bored to death. Inother words, prep classes are seen as“fluff” breaks between the real “acad-emic” work at school … yet the SATand ACT results often have more im-pact on students’ future (admissionsand scholarships) than most classes inhigh school. It is not unusual for mystudents who have taken a prep class attheir high school to increase 200 –300 points on their SAT, and 4 - 8points on their ACT.

The Good News: I consistentlyfind that students respond incrediblywell and improve when they becomeboth teacher and student as in a col-lege seminar at the junior or seniorlevel where I am their coach. My roleis to quickly help them determinewhere they need to work and to be aresource as they progress. Lecturing isno substitute for determining a stu-dent’s baseline level and then structur-ing their learning around their needs. It very satisfying to see their motiva-tions soar when their perspectivechanges from “Can I do this?” to “I

can do this well.” and then to “Let meshow you how well I can do.” Theydiscover that real competition is inter-nal and - when they do their best - ex-ternal results take care of themselves.Learning the strategies often result incomments like, “Cool” and “Thatmakes it a lot easier”. More important, they learn how to “learn for a life-time”.

Dr. Wayne Adams is one of thetop SAT and ACT Tutors in the coun-try and a former Dean of a GraduateSchool of Business and Full Professor. His students have been admitted toHarvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford,Cornell, Duke, U Chicago, U Penn,Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, UCLA,USC, Boston College, Northeastern,UF, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida GulfCoast, St. Leo’s, New College ofFlorida, U Miami, FIU, and manyother colleges and universities; oftenwith academic, athletic, or musicscholarships. Normally, student scoresincrease 200 to 300 points on theSAT, and 4 – 8 points on the ACT.He has degrees and advanced studiesfrom Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Co-lumbia International, and Luther Rice. You can contact him at 727-253-0639or [email protected].

Combat Veterans and CombatWounded Veterans, the men andwomen who literally put their lives onthe line for the United States and itscitizens, make a huge sacrifice, andthey do not want to talk about it somuch. But ask about their golf game! This is something that CombatWounded Veteran Steve Surface andhis father Combat Veteran StephenSurface viscerally understand. Stephen, who served in Vietnam, and more re-cently as a past Commander of theVFW says, “A Vet will talk to anotherVet before anyone else because we un-derstand they understand. Out hereon the golf course, it brings us to-gether.”

Turf Warriors, founded by Com-bat Wounded Veteran Steve Surface, isa unique organization that allowsCombat and Combat Wounded Veter-ans to focus on something that is bothchallenging and fulfilling – their golfgame and the camaraderie theyenjoy! Turf Warriors is what PurpleHeart recipient and Vietnam Veteran

Rudy Salis calls, “going old school,”adding, “we are Veterans helping Vet-erans.” (Rudy also has been a long-time supporter of AVAST, anotherorganization that helps Veterans inmany ways.) Turf Warriors’ mission isfor Combat Veterans to help eachother to become successful in life, ed-ucation and careers.

“Golf doesn’t heal our CombatVeterans but when someone puts agolf club in your hands and you startswinging you tend to feel better andmore relaxed. You’re thoughts are onhitting that little golf ball as straightand far as you can. What golf does isbring Combat and Combat WoundedVeterans, along with their family to aplace where they can talk to eachother, feel relaxed, get some exerciseand enjoy life,” writes Steve, whosecandid article was featured in SouthernGolf Central magazine (Volume 6,Issue 8). Exposure to multiple road-side IEDs in February 2011 left Stevewith injuries that included a mild trau-matic brain injury, but he was able towork through it and return to South-ern Afghanistan to finish his 12-

month deployment as Combat Vet-eran. Once deployment was over, though, Steve found that a new battlewas before him – the battle to feelnormal again. When a fellow CombatWounded Veteran invited him to ex-perience something new and come outand play golf, he found that it lessenedhis anxiety. “I can’t remember howmany golf balls I went through thatday, I came home with zero but in a

great mood.” In 2015, Steve and his wife Stacy

decided to start their own “pay back”for other Veterans and started gather-ing used golf clubs and bags so thatCombat Veterans who would other-wise never have the opportunity couldplay golf.

Steve explains why it’s so impor-tant for Combat Veterans and CombatWounded Veterans to be able to focus

on something as normal as improvingone’s golf game. He wrote, “Wecome from a war zone and then areexpected to go back to who we wereprior to deployment. We are youngadults who have seen horrible thingsand now have to live with it, withoutshowing weakness or telling ourspouses and family what we have actu-ally seen or had to do because wedon’t want to lose the innocent re-spect, moral and honor that our bestfriends, the love of our life, our fami-lies have for us.”

Turf Warriors – More Than a GameSteve Surface invited Neighbor-

hood News & Lifestyles to come out toTurf Warriors’ second Combat Veter-ans Golf Clinic at East Lake Wood-lands Golf Course on Tuesday, June21st. Turf Warriors meet at East LakeWoodlands Country Club every 3rdTuesday of the month at 3 p.m. Thecost to the Veterans is zero. They getabout 30- to 45-minute lesson from aPGA Pro; then play the course withother Veterans.

Initially, the clinics were first heldat Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, which still supports the organizationas well as the children of Veterans

through its First Tee program. Stevesays that East Lake Woodlands GolfClub manager, Dan Riker, immedi-ately agreed to support Turf Warriors.East Lake Woodlands’ PGA Golf ProKent Magilligan is happy to donate histime, saying, “I relate very well tothese guys. I will hit my 23-year an-niversary with the Air Force in Sep-tember. And, golf, as frustrating as it is– it’s peaceful and it’s a very individu-alized game.

The goal of Turf Warriors: “Wewant one clinic in every county inFlorida, where Veterans can come to-gether and enjoy the game and the ca-maraderie once a month at no cost tothem. We are looking for Golf Clubsthat will donate tee times and GolfPros who will donate an hour of in-struction,” says Steve. Pinellas Countyis just the start! Upcoming clinics arebeing put in place at Silver Dollar Golf& Trap Club in Odessa, which shouldstart late July, and at Hernando Oaksin Brooksville sometime in August.

Not only is Turf Warriors insearch of golf clubs throughoutFlorida to get involved, they also areseeking Combat Veterans or CombatWounded Veterans who can take aleadership role in each clinic. And if

you know of anyone who owns abuilding that could be used for indoorgolf, please contact Turf Warriors.Steve explains that there are manyCombat Wounded Veterans who can’tplay golf outside, such as those whohave suffered burns or brain injuriesthat make them sensitive to brightsunlight. There are many ways to helpand Turf Warriors gladly accepts usedgolf clubs and bags and monetary do-

nations are used to purchase new golfbags.

Combat and Combat WoundedVeterans are invited to participateand can find more informationonline at www.TurfWarriors.org.Community members who wouldlike to support Turf Warriors, please contact Steve Surface [email protected].
