Many of Oregon's coastal airports would be out of commission because of earthquake damage, tsunami inundation and debris, or lack of instrumentation for approaches, according to a survey done by Oregon State University earthquake researcher Chris Goldfinger.

"Most of the airports are at low elevation and have relatively short runways, which could make it difficult for fixed-wing aircraft to land in the aftermath of a major earthquake because of water and debris," said Goldfinger, an associate professor of marine geology in OSU's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences. Big waves generated by a storm 2,000 miles away battered a long stretch of the Pacific coast, wrecking homes, hotels and restaurants from Peru to Central America, civil defense officials said Tuesday.

Experts said the event was not a tsunami: the massive waves triggered by undersea earthquakes. Hundreds evacuated after coastal flooding.

A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island early Sunday morning local time, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

This comes after a 6.3-magnitude quake that devastated large parts of Java on May 27, killing more than 5,800 people.

The latest quake struck just before dawn, under the sea, about 290 kilometres southwest of the city of Manado on Sulawesi.

Strong Quake Shakes Taiwan, Japan

• TAIPEI — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan on Friday, rocking buildings in the capital but causing no damage or casualties, the Central Weather Bureau said.The quake's epicentre was located about 150 kilometres southeast of Taipei, the bureau said. Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no threat of a tsunami.The quake was also felt in the Yonaguni islands in southwestern Japan, but there were no reports of damage or injuries there either, officials said.

Maine Quake Causes Dramatic Drop in Well Water Level

• A minor earthquake that shook parts of Maine at 8:07 p.m. local time Monday caused water to drop 2.5 feet at a U.S. Geological Survey monitoring well.
