Flat land ending at the Mississippi River
Low, rolling hills; pastures for grazing
Mountains
The Tennessee River helps to make this happen.
It flows from parts of Kentucky then down into Alabama. It curves back up into East Tennessee.
This causes our state to have an unique landscape.

Pinson Mounds an awesome series of Native American Mounds
built nearly two thousand years ago that we're still learning new things about today. Consider this: In its time, Saul's Mound at Pinson Mounds was the tallest man-made structure in the land we now call the United States. Click here for a virtual tour.
Casey Jones, a folk hero, when he was 16 years old, Jones started working for railroads, first the Mobile & Ohio and later the Illinois Central. By the time he was 27 he had become a railroad engineer, which means that he drove the train. He eventually developed a reputation as a man who would go to great lengths to get his train to the station on time. He died in a train wreck in 1900, with one hand on the whistle and the other on the brake.
By the way, the main reason Casey Jones became famous
after his death was because an African-American engine wiper named Wallace Saunders wrote a song about him. If you want to hear the song’s tune, click here.
