Native Wildflower Facts Spring Beauty is one of the earliest flowers to bloom in the eastern US, and is an important early pollen source. The tubers (also knows as the roots) are edible and taste like sweet potato.

Trout lilies form colonies of plants of different ages. Youngsters are flowerless and have only one leaf, older plants have two leaves and a single flower.

Dense Blazing Star can reproduce from seed or re-sprout from underground corms, which can live in the soil for 11 to 17 years.

There are over 35 species of trillium in North America and some require 7-10 years in optimal conditions to flower. Many are protected, so don't pick them in the wild.

Dutchman’s breeches is related to the poppy and contains narcotic and toxic substances. Cows grazing on the plant will stumble as if drunk, giving them the nickname “Little Blue Staggers.”
